Suddenly, a fleet of ships with mysterious superweapons called the "Fleet of Fog" appeared all around the world. Humanity didn't have the technology to fight such a fleet, so they were driven out of the sea...

Seventeen years after the battle, for some reason, Gunzou Chihaya and his crewmates aboard the I-401 and the personification (Mental Model) of the I-401, Iona, started fighting the Fleet of Fog...

Licensed for simulpub on Crunchyroll.

Has a 12 episode anime that aired Fall 2013. Opinions from the fans are... mixed. Let's just leave it at that.

I've not read the manga - but the series was good - and even quite creepy (a certain battleship and heavy cruiser come to mind here).

I do recommend giving the Manga a shot, Ghost. It's got quite a bit more detail and Neat Things than the anime, I feel.

Makes sense, really. They had to cut a /lot/ of stuff to fit the storyline into 12 episodes. :p

Regardless, I'm not sure I can accept that final bit, Einsig. How can the Sufficient Velocity be the flagship of my heart when I already am a member of Dakka-chan's fleet? ;_;

I cannot choose between them!

I must have them both! :D

Joking aside, I'm looking forwards to the current storyarc. It's getting INTERESTING.

I mean...we have the Fog starting to infight, the Fog teaming up with humans who aren't The Captain, Adorable English Cruiser Meido Models, and, most terrifying of all...THE INVINCIBLE DESTROYER YUKIKAZE HAS ENTERED THE FRAY! :D

Seriously, her luck is unstoppable! That is what the Internets has told me.

The historical Yukikaze was a ridiculously lucky ship, but there were some in the IJN who considered her a bad omen, because every single ship (more or less) that the Yukikaze was tasked to escort ended up getting sunk. It's like she sucked up everyone's luck for herself. :p

The anime and manga are fairly different though, but I think the characters are consistent enough over both series

Eh, I feel like the anime Flanderized a lot of the characters.

For instance, Gunzou being a completely bland and boring person. And Iona being turned into a naive creepy child, when she's almost nothing like that in the manga even halfway in.

In retrospect, Iona having the same voice actress as Miho Nishizumi from Girls und Panzer kind of explains everything.

Flanderized Haruna was adorable, of course, but still gives me pause.

Kirishima was pretty much perfect, though.

So, seeing that there was no active thread for discussion of Arpeggio, going to bring back this one.

Reactions on latest update? Big-ass twin-barreled Super Gravity Gun, The Fog have fighter craft, Dynamite fishing with the Fog, and... Kongou's flagship equipment is a massive 3-D printer for ships.

Myoko's fuckhuge guns don't make any sense.

Are they graviton cannons? If so, why do they have such giant barrels? If they're not, why is she using such an excessively large pair of guns that apparently aren't any more powerful than a regular gravity gun and also require a huge wait time between shots?

Liked the manga in the earlier volumes, but I felt that it eventually started to favor its moe-ness over story development. I think I stopped reading a bit after they escaped from the giant isolated naval base.

About the only one they got right. Honestly, did they have to turn my cute battleship girls into Moeblobs :(

Arpeggio is supposed to be about the complex interplay between its various actors and beating your enemy with the power of supersonic torpedoes!

I dunno, I kind of like some of the character development the ships of the Fog are getting.

Oh, the anime?
Urgh, the anime was... bad.
Well, it looked cool, but the whole "Power of Friendship" thing felt a bit off.

I thought that the basic themes made sense and are consistent with the core themes of the manga. I've always said that this is something of a cross between Gundam (the battles and some of the characters), Macross (friendship and discovering humanity themes), and Evangelion (Yamato, Musashi and Shouzou, some of the themes about the AC).

It didn't even look that cool to be honest. Haruna and Kirishima came off as anemic at best during their figh with Iona. I know there are budget limitations, but seriously.

I didn't get Myoko's double-barreled GBE super gravity cannons either.

They still take plenty of time to charge up and appear to be relatively the same as the vanilla SGC in terms of 'oomph'.

If that's some kind of specialist weapon system, well, then I'm disappointed.

No, they appear to be somewhat more powerful, more focused, and longer-ranged then normal heavy cruiser SGC systems. I suspect that this is the Fog's response to what Iona pulled against Takao. Packing an up-rated SGC onto a smaller hull.

It looks no more powerful than Takao's.

It hit I-401 directly with one of the beams, and her Wave Armor didn't even fail.

Granted, it passed through two active decoys before getting there, but those things have no Wave Armor and very little mass for their size.

Reviewing the conversation 400 and 402 had with Zuikaku, I notice they mention that they worry about the possibility of fighting Haruna's "fleet".

I wonder what exactly would incite a fight between them.
