Are You Afraid of the Dark? [Worm AU fanfic]

I'd call her Surgeon or Doctor Frankenstein if she keeps the same power set. However, without her original Trigger Event, logic dictates that her power should have a different expression based on different circumstances.

Without Jack and the Slaughterhouse, it's obvious that her family won't suffer the same fate.

so.... we have a heroic Bonesaw then?

She may show up.

And who says it's the Nine who made her trigger?

Ah, cool. Let's see what'll happen then. I can see her being set upon the city by being directed by someone else. Granted, it's gonna take a worse person than Jack to do something horrible to Riley.

Without Jack and the Slaughterhouse, it's obvious that her family won't suffer the same fate.
I recall one, heroic Riley who triggered when her family got in a car accident. There wasn't enough left to save her parents the normal way, so she stitched then together, with some extra car parts and captured squirrels, to make her bodyguard, MomDad. Can't remember which story that was from (though I'll laugh if it was actually an Ack fic). Anyway, different trigger, but still based on "have to save my dying family RIGHT NOW." Not really a standard Tinker trigger, but... Good enough for fanfic?

Not one of mine.

I've actually got a Riley trigger set up in Recoil, down the path a ways.

Tinker triggers are difficult to pin down for me, because they are based on how long they're in a bad situation. A slow burning event that builds up to the day a Tinker triggers. Riley was forced to save her parents even after triggering and that was horribly futile. I don't know if she had a Second Trigger during that time, but it seems plausible. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I haven't come up with a parallel feat yet.
Please don't try to come up with parallels for everything. That's a good way to ruin the story.

I suspect Piggot is going to die once Danny finds out about Sophia
Why? Piggot is, as far as we know just as guilty as Danny, in that it was their responsibility to stop the bullying, but since they weren't aware of it they didn't do anything.

Man, Danny really has the people of BB shaking in their boots.
"It's the Dark," the guy said desperately. "I've heard the stories. When Marquis wanted someone dead, he called on the Dark. I mean, he's the reason Jack Slash went into the Birdcage in a fuckin' wheelchair.
Now there's a butterfly.
Fuck, I hope nobody does anything stupid.

"So you're saying that the Dark was there for another reason, and when Cricket and Hookwolf showed up, they were eliminated just because they were in the way?" The idea of someone casually brushing Hookwolf aside as being surplus to requirements sent chills down Emily's spine. As much as she despised the Empire, she was fully aware of the fact that the killings would send tremors to the far reaches of Brockton Bay's gang scene. The aftershocks, she suspected, would be reverberating for some time to come.
Other gangs seeing the Empire being weak and taking advantage of it to take pieces of their territory.
"Hm." Assault's tone was carefully noncommittal. "Just so you know, Armsmaster's looking to go on the hunt just as soon as he starts his patrol this afternoon. He's been working on a new halberd all morning."
Dammit, Halbeard!!!
"If there ever was a Dark, he's been dead in a ditch for years. If there's anything we need to fear, it's not the Dark." Turning away from the unfortunate minion, he addressed the rest of the men in the room. "Tonight, we prepare. Tomorrow night, we start our push. We won't take the city in a night. We won't take it in a week. We won't even take it in a month. But we will take it."

Behind his mask, he smiled. Things were finally looking up for the ABB.
Tell me, Lung:

Are you afraid of the Dark?
Closing the files, he began to wonder if he was the victim of an elaborate prank of some kind. Or perhaps the Dark was just some kind of urban legend. Even as a crime boss of growing power within Brockton Bay, he'd never encountered the man, much less heard anything about him.
The downside of being the new kid on the block.
And then the Plan dropped into her lap, almost fully formed. "I … heh, would you believe I've already been looking him up?" she asked. "Rachel met someone calling himself that at the Empire slaughter last night. I found out a bit, too."

"I'm listening." Coil's voice was tight.

Lisa made herself shrug. It was easier to make bullshit sound just right when you did the gestures as well. "There's no such person as the 'Dark'. Oh, there might have been one once, but every few years when someone got the drop on the previous one, they'd take over the name. The last one got his head blown off in a screwed-up bank robbery three years ago, so there's been no contenders for the title until now. The thing is, if you claimed the name, this guy's likely to come after you with the idea that you're some grandstander. But he doesn't know who you are, so your guys'll take him down easily." The story came easily to her, flowing to its natural conclusion.

"And why should I do that?" But she knew she had his attention.

"The reputation, duh," she said. "If you can put it out that the Dark is working for you, nobody's going to want to cross you."

"Hmm." There was a long moment of silence. "So do you think—"

"I mean, I'm pretty sure we couldn't pull it off," she interrupted, trying to make it sound as though this had only just occurred to her. "I mean, we're all too young to be the original Dark, and everyone knows the Undersiders don't kill. One of your guys could do it easily, though."

"I'll keep that in mind." The dial tone cut in, indicating that he'd hung up.
Holy shit, she just did that.
With a put-upon sigh, he climbed the steps once more and unlocked the back door. Chewie scrabbled his way past the opening door and leaped into his hands. Danny lifted up the wriggling bundle, tail wagging so hard that Chewie's entire back half was jerking from side to side, and looked him in the eye. "What am I going to do with you?" he asked rhetorically. Chewie's answer was to lick him on the face.

Holding Chewie with one arm, he locked the door with his free hand then headed down the steps to the back yard. "Okay," he said seriously. "These are the rules. You don't make noise. You don't run off. And if trouble happens, I'll take care of it. Got that?"

Chewie tilted his head to one side. Danny hoped that meant Gotcha, boss. Whatever you say. It was more likely, of course, that what it really meant was I have no idea what you just said. Whatever; he had a leash in the car. He'd just have to deal.
Chewie is not afraid of the Dark.
Zipping his jacket part-way up and tucking it in, he tightened his belt to almost painful levels. Then he picked Chewie up and put him inside his jacket, zipping it the rest of the way. After a little squirming around, Chewie pushed his head out through the neck of the jacket, looking around with interest.
Cute.
I haven't come up with a parallel feat yet.

Maybe next chapter :p
A new pair of concrete shoes followed by:
"Say hey to Leviathan for me."
:V

"Oh, God," he muttered. He took two more steps, then waited. The howling didn't stop. It occurred to him that Chewie had never been left alone since Danny had acquired him. Worse, if he walked away now and Chewie kept up the racket, it might just draw attention.

Hm. Minor plot hole, or at least unforgivable forgetfulness from the Dark, here: he has a soundproofed basement. And no, locking the little dog down there with some nice toys and a bed and some food and water is no worse than locking him up in your house with the same thing. With little puppies, it's usually best to restrict them to smaller areas when leaving them alone in the house, anyway.

Discovering that settling on the house in the last few years has led to the basement soundproofing failing, and thus the little dog's suprirsingly loud howls still being audible, would be my suggestion for closing this one up.

Alan, you'd better have some very good answers.
Alan is on a short list of people he can't interrogate as the Dark. Not and leave him alive.

The Dark could assassinate a corrupt divorce attorney; maybe some soon-to-be-ex-spouse wanted the opposing attorney dealt with to make the divorce go more his way. But Danny can't be the Dark while intimidating answers out of Alan without Alan learning who the Dark is. I suppose being "angry Danny" might work. Maybe. But is Danny as scary as the Dark without tipping his hand?

Like, I dunno, killing Lung with a pencil.
Oddly, the Dark has little reason to penalize Lung, unless Lung comes after Taylor or Chewie. The Dark doesn't care if the ABB thinks the Empire is weak and fights a gang war with them.

random tip: for dealing with lonely/anxious puppy-- wrap a loudly ticking clock in a blanket, put it in the puppy's bed. mimics a heartbeat and soothes the puppy.

Hmm on one hand Sophia's probably the happiest she could ever be since her (possible)idol DARK is back on the other hand Winslow's been burned down finally which means she has no choice but to be under the eyes of the loser squad her teammates at Arcadia.

He simply didn't think of that (and considers locking a puppy in the basement to be cruel, even if it isn't. Worse, if Chewie tries to climb the stairs to get out and falls on to concrete, that would be horrible).

Alan already knows :p

Nope, but he cares if his little girl is endangered.
My headcanon until you say otherwise is he actually managed to live a bit, using his less obvious powers. Until Marquis was Birdcaged, and decided to finish the job.
That works.

Sophia didn't get into the cape scene until after the Dark retired. So all she knows is the stories, and she considers herself more of a badass than any story.

He's going to render her unconscious with a double A battery and some baling twine before dropping her off with BBPD, or something.

FYI is was Good Girl!Riley on Weaver Nine

I think Lisa overplayed her hand here (as she is wont to do). She just arranged for a third-party to mess with the Dark. That's bad. But what's worse is she did it with the intent of inducing the Dark to kill a specific individual without her having to pay the Dark.

She doesn't seem to grasp that making their life more complicated is the kind of thing that gets the Dark's personal attention.

I mean the head honcho knew it was a bad idea to try and protect his son from John Wick, but... his son, man. He had to try.
Well for Max he'd probably wouldn't give a damn if DARK killed Theo since he's got a spare in the form of little Aster...that and the fact that I kinda doubt Max cares about anyone other then himself at all anyway.

First, Theo would have to do a total 180 and be an arrogant prick who wants a car so badly he's willing to break into a house and kill a dog to get it.

This, of course, didn't happen.

Thus, Max wasn't faced with the impossible situation.

I think that Lisa will one day wake up to find a note on her pillow, one telling her that the Dark knows what she did and why. Once her panic attack has subsided, she then finds a second note telling her that the Dark has decided that she's too liable to do something stupid if she remains unleashed, so the Dark has set her up to be adopted into a family and get a new sister...
...Taylor Hebert...

Cue extreme hyperventilation when she unwillingly reports in and comes face-to-face with her hyper-protective new adoptive father...
