Are You Afraid of the Dark? [Worm AU fanfic]

Well damn, didn't really expect any of this to go the way it did.

Ethan's going to feel pretty bad in a day or two.

Hmm. So, Hess discovered there were predators waaay bigger than she ever deluded herself she was, then when the end comes (though I'll only believe it when the body is disposed of, though the setting strongly suggests it), it's not even done by the predator.

Well then, that's a nice burn to her view of the world.
Word of God: Sophia is dead. There'll be no last-minute save or return from the dead.

Now for the really important question...
When/is Taylor gonna tell Danny about her powers?

I think you missed something important.

"It's nothing you said," she assured him. "It's something about me. Something I think you need to know."

He raised an eyebrow. "Okay, I'm officially intrigued. What is it that I need to know?"

Stepping back from him, Taylor raised her arms dramatically upward and outward. Danny wasn't sure exactly what was going to happen, until tens of thousands of bugs started swarming in through the windows and under the doors. They scuttled over the floor and walls, while those that could fly took to the air. Moving in unison, they began to orbit Taylor, covering the floor in a glittering curve of brown-black chitin. The air was abuzz with the sound of thousands of tiny wings.

Danny looked at the insectoid halo surrounding his daughter and whistled softly.

"Well, now," he said softly. "Isn't that interesting."

Kind of sad that Emma won't meet the Dark, but she couldn't be trusted to keep quiet, and Danny did say he wouldn't kill her, so... I hope she still has a chat with him about why she's leaving the US, though. ("The only reason I'm not ruining your life over what you did to Taylor is because Alan's a friend and he promised to keep you away from her.")

That went somewhat how I expected. I half expected Taylor to kill her, but Alan doing it makes a lot of sense for a few different reasons. Wonder if she tried to go shadowform while still tied up with the gun in her face.

But at least Danny knows about Taylor's abilities. Curious he's going to train her with them.

"What do you mean, you're sending me to boarding school in Germany?"
Seems like a setup for Nazi Cape Emma.

No, it's a set up for "Emma was put on a bus".

More seriously, I expect she's in for an... interesting time, being the foreigner in a country where she doesn't speak the primary language, doesn't have any local contacts, and has let some very vital social skills rot because she had a bully with powers on her side.

I was wondering why not send her to an English speaking country, at least, then I remembered this.

"There's only two ways to get through to them."

The taste of vomit rose into the back of Alan's throat. "What … what's the other way?"

Danny stepped out through the door. He glanced back once. "Kick their legs out from under them."

Emma isn't coming back any more than Sophia is. Although if we get some scenes that showcase the process of Emma falling down, now that her world has been kicked out from under her, the schadenfreude will be appreciated.

Since I consider the locker to have been attempted murder, and we see in canon that the Protectorate covers for Sophia (and knowingly turned a blind eye to her continuing to vigilante while on probation), killing her wasn't murder in a moral sense. Although I'm Texas-raised, so perhaps I'm biased by the Texan Defense. And Danny did perform due diligence by interviewing her to rule out the possibility that she needed help rather than to be treated like the outlaw that she is, battening on a corrupt system.

I assume that Danny will teach Taylor to be exceptionally subtle with the use of her bugs. Scouting, surreptitious delivery of trace substances, exotic materials production, but no intimidating swarms of bugs to prove that 'Skitter' even exists.

Will they reach out to Parian for help with gear? I've always liked the idea of their synergy.

Some night watchman sees some 'under cover' cleaning spiders pushing a miniature cleaners cart down a hall. "I got to stop drinking."

But wonder how biting or asphyxiating them in their sleep would go. Spiders dropping poison or something into meal/drink while you are half a city away would be sneaky as.

Well, that got dark.
Truth be told, she might've embellished things a little. It was obvious that this was a guy for whom the phrase 'does not fuck around' might well have been invented. After the beatdown, she'd decided that it couldn't hurt to try to impress him a little. Badass to badass, that sort of thing. It could even be that he was testing her, seeing what she was like when the chips were down.
...Ah, screw it, there ain't excavation equipment efficient enough for that hole digging.
"HEBERT!" screamed Sophia. "GET BACK HERE! CUT ME LOOSE, YOU WORTHLESS PIECE OF SHIT!"
Taylor: "I'm not hearing a 'please' in there."

A marker got called in. As seen in the Wick series, serious business when that's involved. Dude also knew the rule. He owed Dark, and whatever it was Sophia did that got the Dark out of retirement? He wisely decided he didn't want to know more, gave the Dark what he wanted, and kept himself out of it. He got a second chance when the Dark saved him. I also figure that in this universe, it also contributed to his surrendering to Battery and going hero. He wasn't getting anymore chances.

And the police are specifically required to deal with any outbreak of people waving Nazi flags in Germany (that being specifically against the law, there).

On the one hand, you have far more faith in the police than I do to actually stop racism rather than uphold it. On the other hand, I've only got any kind of experience with American police, so maybe they suck less on the other side of the pond.

Wrong, but oh so cathartic at the same time.
I have the same instinctive, kneejerk "Oh, it's a child, they can't do that!" reaction that most people have, I think. But upon further reflection, Sophia isn't a child, and has demonstrated in cannon and in this story that she is a full blown sociopath at best. Realistically, they didn't have any other choice if they wanted to keep any of their secrets.

Also adding my voice to those who are really looking forward to see what the Dark will do with the addition of Taylor and the bugpocalypse. :D

I mean, they also could have cut off her tongue and hands so that she can't talk or write. I mean, whether or not that's any morally better is up for debate, but they technically could have done that.

While well-written I'm honestly wrestling with how this last chapter leaves me feeling. Which..isn't a critique. I mean, if you step back and look at what just happened, it's not remotely a "good thing", and it perhaps says something about a whole lot of things if we just regard it as "cathartic". Even if it feels that way.

As both a Texan and a strong proponent of licensed to carry and home / personal defense, I disagree.
I'm pretty sure that even in Texas, kidnapping someone some time after the crime and executing them in your basement is murder. Morally, it definitely is by most standards, even if they really deserved it.
This, however, I do agree with. Heat of the moment, depending on circumstances is one thing. Well after the fact, even if extremely well justified, is murder outside of the established legal system.
