Chapter 2
Chapter 2

"You should be connected with London in a few minutes, sir."

"Thank you."

Admiral Takeda sighed softly, and tugged on the brim of his cap. It hadn't exactly been his intention to contact the British without the reason for this message being present...but Indestructible was apparently asleep in Fubuki's room.

It wasn't even a surprise, really. These girls went through two stages after summoning; intense, crippling, hunger...and the need to sleep. Indestructible wasn't Japanese, but it was far from reasonable to assume she would be different. It might be better that she was the same.

I would rather get the shock out of the way, alone. Commander Goto has vanished as well, so I can hardly pin this on him.

Sighing again, Takeda looked at the dead screen while he waited. And reflected on the problem child dropped into his metaphorical lap.

Kongou. A ship that was delayed to the point where it had become more economical to just sell her to the British and wash their hands of it all. Naturally, the Hiei-class had served every bit as well as a hypothetical Kongou-class would have. And that should have been the end of it.

Yet, with the Abyssals and the kanmusu, nothing was ever that simple. Now, he had to face a girl who had every right to feel betrayed and abandoned by her country. It was not an enviable position.

Damn Goto and his harebrained schemes. Whenever Takeda found him again, the Commander was going to apologize, personally. And tell him exactly what he had intended with that summoning.

"We're connected now." A voice, from one of his officers, distracted the Admiral.

Takeda nodded slightly, as the large screen in front of him changed from its blank state. Instead, it now showed an office similar to his own office, only furnished differently. Just as the office was similar-yet-different, so too was the man sitting in it. A man wearing a British version of his own uniform, rank and all. Dark black hair, only now turning grey, on a pale face.

It was good to see him.

"Hello, Admiral Takeda," the other man was the first to speak, a tired smile crossing his slightly younger face. Standing beside him, as ever, was HMS Hood. Her stoic expression never did change. "It's been quite a while, hasn't it?"

"Good to see you, Admiral Smith," Takeda's reply was easy going, despite the situation.

The other man nodded...and his smile got at least a little bit more real. "Now that formalities are out of the way, how are you, Daiki?"

"Well enough, Blake. However, this isn't a social call."

"With how late it is there, I doubted it was," Smith shook his head. He chuckled deeply, his eyes glancing at the bright sun outside his own window. "So, what is it this time? You know I can't send any of my girls to help you."

Takeda sighed. He supposed that one was an easy shot. He got desperate, sometimes. "That isn't what I'm calling for. Are you alone?"

Smith raised an eyebrow, looking over his shoulder. And Hood looked over her shoulder.

Of course, there was no one else there. It was only the Admiral and the ship girl in the old-fashioned Victorian-era Royal Navy uniform. Her long blonde hair was tied back into a loose ponytail, barely held under an officer's cap. It was a cap that wouldn't have looked out of place on Admiral Nelson himself, in all honesty. Curiously old fashioned, for someone younger than Indestructible.

Then, anyone who knew the Royal Navy would recognize Hood instantly. She was, then and now, the most famous of all British ships. And ship girls, for that matter.

"Well, unless I've got a submarine hiding under my desk...Hood here is the only person with me," Smith joked, his voice full of levity. His eyes became dead serious. "So, is something wrong enough that you don't want anyone but us to know?"

"Not...wrong," here, Takeda sighed. He spread his hands over his desk and shrugged helplessly. It was well past the point of hiding how he felt. "Difficult, would be the word I choose. Have you summoned every kanmusu from the Second War era?"

A shake of a head was his answer. Smith frowning when he replied, "Of course not. We may not have been the Americans, but we still had a lot of ships! Bloody hell, we may have summoned most of our battlecruisers but we haven't even touched the destroyers or submarines yet."

Flicking his head back a little, Smith looked over at Hood. Who was, in a rare showing for her, biting her lip. That was practically bouncing in place for the stoic battlecruiser.

Both men knew why, even if Smith didn't know that Takeda knew.

"As I'm sure Hood would tell you, the most missed ship girl is probably Indestructible. Her sisters are, well, a pain in my neck. Have you ever had to deal with a dozen battlecruisers, even if only two are actually sisters, trying to make you do a summoning? My back still hurts from the last time Irresistible jumped me."

"I...see." Takeda knew he should have laughed at the obvious joke. He couldn't. Indestructible's sisters. How was he possibly going to juggle the sick with worry British girls, with the Japanese ones that would tear down the entire base to see their long-forgotten sibling?

I don't know what I'll do.

"You're not telling me something," the British man narrowed his eyes. He knew something was up. "Why are you asking me that question, Daiki?"

"We made an attempt to do what the Americans did with Hawaii, and summon Tosa or the original Amagi," the Japanese man's voice was soft as silk. That softness did little to hide his lingering concern and guilt. "That didn't work as planned."

And wasn't that an understatement. Summoning an angry and full of rightful betrayal Tosa, or a crippled Amagi might have been better than what had happened. At least in that case, they would have been manageable. They would have been Japanese and there would be no question of where they belonged. There would have been none of the issues they were currently dealing with.

You couldn't say that with Indestructible. You never could.

Especially considering Takeda himself believed that they had long ago forfeited any right to say what Indestructible should do. Japan had given that right away, when they abandoned Kongou.

"Did your summoning fail?" Smith broke back into the conversation, "I can't imagine that would be enough reason to call me. Especially since you know we can't spare any girls to help you."

"The summoning was a success...but it wasn't Tosa nor Amagi we summoned," Takeda brought up a picture of who they had summoned.

Smith's eyes widened noticeably, though it was nothing on Hood. The normally stoic battlecruiser held a hand to her mouth, a shocked little gasp escaping her lips. Her hand was trembling slightly, bright green eyes staring at the picture. She was shocked to her very core and Takeda hated that he had done that to her.

"As you can see, it didn't fail. However..."

It would not be Smith who spoke this time. Hood, shaking her head slightly, whispered softly. "She looks just like Irresistible and Implacable..."

"Other than her hair and eyes, yes." Smith nodded, turning his full attention on Takeda, with narrowed eyes. "By this, I have to assume you summoned Indestructible?"

The Japanese man nodded back, "Yes. We're still not sure how. It was certainly not my intention, and I personally oversaw the summoning. How we summoned her instead of Tosa is a mystery."

Before either man could continue discussing the subject, Hood spun on her heel and started marching to the door that Takeda could see behind his old friend's chair. The man in question turned around, watching his fleet commander go. There was a resigned slump to his shoulders, as Hood stopped only long enough to look back over her shoulder. There was a slight wetness to her stoic eyes, as she looked back one more time at the picture of Indestructible.

"I'm going to let her sisters know."

And before Takeda could say anything about attempting to keep this situation 'under wraps', as the Americans would say, the battlecruiser was gone. For his part, Smith sighed and shook his head fondly, before turning back to the screen.

"I expected that," he said, "Honestly, I'm amazed she's as calm as she is. The moment I realized who you had summoned...well, Hood has a special place in her heart for that girl, more than even Bismarck."

"And you won't stop her, Blake?" Takeda resigned himself to hearing an expected answer.

He got it, Smith snorting softly, "Believe me Daiki, Hood's bravery is matched only by her stubbornness. And as their names can imply, those two girls she's going to talk to are even worse. I couldn't keep this a secret from them even if I wanted to." Smith snorted again and shook his head bemusedly. "And I don't want to. Because-"

Here, the man leveled a serious stare on his friend, before continuing to speak in a harder tone.

"The fact you don't want them to know doesn't ring quite right with me. What are you hiding, Daiki?"

And there it was, the problem that Takeda had been loathe to discuss.

"Our government is desperate, Blake," the Japanese man shrugged. No point in beating around the bush with his friend. "We barely have enough kanmusu to properly cover our shores and Okinawa. Securing our supply lanes is stretching our resources thin, and America continues to refuse to send reinforcements. We're running ourselves dry."

"And I wish we could help with that," Smith replied, narrowing his eyes slightly, "That being said, you had better not be about to say what I think you are."

Takeda sighed, "Our government wants to keep Indestructible here."

"Never going to happen."

Smith's voice was hard, the Admiral Glare leveled on his old friend. Takeda just sighed again, unable to blame him for that reaction in the slightest.

It was much the same as his own, when the Diet had told him to keep Indestructible in Japan. They were quite clear on that fact. Despite the fact that he knew, better than anyone, how that idea would go over. How it would go over on both sides of the world.

He knew because it was how he would feel. How he did feel. Indestructible shouldn't be forced to stay in Japan. Forcing her to stay in a nation she already felt betrayed her...

How would anyone react to that? She didn't need to be put through that. It wasn't just his fondness for all the kanmusu talking. If anyone deserved to just go home, it was that battlecruiser. Regardless of the Hiei sisters being in Japan, Indestructible belonged in Britain.

I know that our politicians are desperate. Desperation does strange things to people. They're not fools, they aren't dumb, they're just…scared. Scared and worried and all other such things. Outside of those who truly do believe that because we ordered Kongou we have a 'claim' to Indestructible. The same kind that continue to deny what we did during the War Years.

"I know," as such, Takeda sent a weary look at his British friend. "Believe me, I know."

"I'm not sure you do, Daiki," Smith countered. His tone had lost all levity and friendliness, to be replaced by ice. "What if Yukikaze had been summoned by Taiwan? Or Hibiki by Russia? If they tried to keep those girls because of their own lacking numbers, your government would rightfully be raising bloody hell over it. So what gives them the right to keep Indestructible there? Need I remind you..."

"That Japan abandoned her in the first place?" Takeda finished his friend's sentence, bitterness leaking into his own tone. "You don't need to tell me that, old friend. I agree with you, on this and many other matters. Indestructible being kept here is ignoring her own feelings, and that of her homeland. However, I can't tell the Diet what to do. It is very likely that our government will contact your Prime Minister..."

Smith didn't even need to reply to that. Both men knew exactly how that would go over. It was enough to make Takeda turn his eyes away from his friend, and to the moon outside his window. His fingers began tapping on the desk nervously, even though none of this was truly his fault. He was the messenger.

Don't shoot the messenger was a saying that absolutely no one listened to.

The British Admiral confirmed that, his voice as low as a hiss. "Good luck with that. Even if the PM allowed it, which he won't, Indestructible wouldn't be there for long. If she is anything like her sisters and Hood, she'll sail back here even if she has to fight her way out. That's ignoring that her sisters are going to go to Japan at the moment Hood gets done talking to them."

Now, Takeda might have joked about Smith being unable to keep his kanmusu under control, in better circumstances. At the moment, he knew that his friend wasn't joking in the slightest. In all likelihood, he would order the Indestructible sisters to go to Japan and recover their lost sibling.

"Believe me old friend," the Japanese Admiral finally spoke again, voice tired, "I will do everything in my power to ensure she can return. If you need to send her sisters here, I won't do anything to stop it. Perhaps meeting her sisters will make it easier on Hiei. At least she'll know her sister is in good hands."

"We'll see."

Whatever fire had been in Smith's voice was gone now. He just looked old and tired in a way that Takeda could easily relate to. The British officer wearily climbed to his feet, and began to turn to leave as Hood had done. His eyes met Takeda's, one last time.

"I'll call you again tomorrow, Daiki. For now, I need to find Hood and let the PM know." Smith sent a small smile at his old friend. "And thank you, at least, for letting me know about this. We were worried about Indestructible...it's good to know she did come back, even if in the wrong country."

With that said, the screen went blank again, leaving a tired old Admiral to pull himself to his feet. He would talk to Indestructible tomorrow as well, and make sure she knew he was doing everything he could to get her home. At least Hiei and most of her sisters were on patrol for the moment. He could only imagine how much damage they would do. Unintentional damage, perhaps, as those girls didn't have a mean bone in their bodies.

But they didn't need to meet their sister, not until she had adjusted to her situation.

Still, one of them is here. I should probably...no. If I tell her, she'll go there immediately. Takeda heaved a deep, exhausted, sigh. Best to let things go as they will. At least it's only her, not the others. If any of them should meet Indestructible first, it should probably be her baby sister.

It was a tired old man who collapsed in bed and tried to get rest that constantly eluded him. As he let his eyes fall shut, Admiral Takeda at least hoped that Indestructible was getting proper rest. She deserved it just as much as anyone else, if not more so.

He didn't know how wrong he was in that small hope.

"Are you awake, Indestructible-san?"

"Yes."

Shifting slightly, the old battlecruiser lifted her head from the futon she had spent the night in. Tired rings were around her eyes, the lack of proper sleep rather evident from that. Perhaps noticing that, Fubuki smiled sadly. The destroyer girl was already in her uniform, as she sat down next to her much larger counterpart. Her sad smile faded into an understanding look, as she looked at the other girl. Who, for her part, just sighed softly.

"Problems sleeping?" Fubuki asked.

"..." Indestructible only looked away, refusing to admit to it. Perhaps it was pride. Perhaps it was lack of trust.

And, maybe, it was just that she didn't want to show weakness.

By her side, the destroyer leaned back. Fubuki smiled at the ceiling, idly twisting a lock of her black hair. "Well, I hope you have a better day today. Do you want to come train with me?"

Indestructible turned her head, allowing herself to smile slightly. "Training?"

"Yup!" the younger girl grinned, "When we're on base, most of us keep training. There's always more to learn. You've never even been in the water, have you?"

"No, I haven't," Indestructible frowned in thought. In this body, she had no idea how to move in the water. "How exactly do you...fight like this?"

"Erm-it's kind of hard to explain. We have rigging, that's like our old hulls. When we summon it, we're more like ships than girls. It's easier to use on the water though. You should be able to do it on instinct even!"

The battlecruiser blinked, before looking down on her new body. Her hands clenched in her thin blanket, clutching at it. It felt odd enough being able to do that. The idea of summoning something like her old hull? How did that even work? She couldn't imagine fighting in this body. That just felt impossible.

Granted, just being like this felt impossible, and Fubuki seemed confident enough. It still boggled the mind though, the idea that she could use something like her old hull in this body. Even thinking that she could fight like that was strange.

And, of course, there was another issue to be had...

I don't feel comfortable being around them with weapons. I don't trust these girls, or their leadership.

To her, despite Fubuki and the Admiral's actions, Japan was still an enemy. The idea of sailing- somehow -in close proximity to who knew how many warships with their weapons armed? Well, it didn't exactly appeal to her. For all that the Admiral said he would punish anyone who so much as looked at her wrong, it didn't make her any happier at the idea.

Maybe she was being unfair?

"...do you not want to train with us?"

Unfortunately, Fubuki's pouty face was quite effective. Large green eyes stared up at her imploringly, her lip quivering slightly. Indestructible's 'older sister' instincts reared their head in full force, as she resisted the urge to hug the girl. It would be so easy too. Just reach over and grab her in a bear hug. Maybe pinch her cheeks to make her smile and-

Sweet Christ, what was with destroyers and being ungodly cute? Even when they were little murder machines?

"Fine, I'll train with you." Indestructible did not grumble, as she pulled her cover off. Her torso stretched a little bit, working the kinks out. Sleeping on the floor wasn't exactly comfortable.

"Thank you!" Fubuki had no restraints in her happiness, though. She quite literally threw herself onto the battlecruiser with a wide grin on her youthful face. "It's been a long time since we've had someone new to train with!"

There was something in the girl's tone that had the battlecruiser raising a curious eyebrow, "What do you mean, Fubuki?"

"Um...it's a long story, Indestructible-san..." she trailed off, before waving her hands in front of her when she saw the look on Indestructible's face. "But I can explain! We, well, haven't had any new girls in a long time. It's been a couple months since Shimikaze-chan arrived, and you're the first since then."

Indestructible frowned, noting the sad tone in her...what was Fubuki to her? A friend? A guide? Eh, she'd settle for 'guide' for now. "I know your navy wasn't the largest, but surely you still have..."

"We do," Fubuki replied with a sad smile, "But you're still the first new girl in a long time."

Rising to her feet, Fubuki swung back and forth on her heels a bit. Her eyes refused to meet Indestructible, looking purposely over her shoulder. She bit her lip and was clearly, clearly uncomfortable. For some reason or another.

Indestructible, well, she couldn't say she understood. However, she did understand having uncomfortable things she didn't want to talk about. She had her own, so she wasn't going to push Fubuki. It didn't do much to change her own feelings on the training, though. Oh well. It was at least a chance to learn something.

I still don't know what to believe, or if Japan's our ally. Maybe I can find out how their girls train, and use that if we have to fight?

Hopefully it wouldn't come to that, but as she had taught Hood, so long ago...always be prepared! No matter what happened.

-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-

"I was so not bloody prepared for this..."

Indestructible looked out at the harbor, a thoroughly bemused expression on her face. A group of little destroyer girls- four of them looked even younger than Fubuki! -were practically surfing across the waves, giggling at each other as they did so. A pair of light cruisers were trying to corral them, but it was a losing battle. Even she could see that, and she wasn't exactly experienced in dealing with girls like this.

Mind, it hardly helped that the two cruisers looked like floating traffic cones. Whoever had the bright idea of an orange skirt needed to be slapped silly. Preferably with a fourteen-inch cannon.

"Close formation!" the shorter haired cruiser called out, water spray flinging up near her short orange skirt. "You can do better than this, girls!"

"Hai!" Fubuki at least was taking it seriously, doing her utmost to stay in some semblance of formation with a younger-looking, white haired destroyer.

"Don't be so hard on them, Sendai," for her part, the longer haired cruiser spoke softly, looking at her...sister? Had to be, with those outfits."They're trying as hard as they can."

Did someone in Japan hire their most wacky costume designer? I feel like they did. I've never seen such vivid orange used like that before. Indestructible couldn't help but stare at the two, wondering what she would see next out of the Japanese ships.

"We're here to train them, Jintsuu," Sendai shot back, a fierce grin on her young face. "Can't do that if they don't give it their all! Ya know?"

Jintsuu sighed softly, "I know."

"Speaking of training...you here for that too?" At that, Sendai turned to flash her grin at Indestructible.

Who blinked, and nodded shortly, "Yes."

"Great! Get in the water then, and I'll show you how to ni..."

"It isn't a night battle, Sendai."

Sendai grumbled at her sister, muttering something about 'night battles are the best though', before turning back to running herd on the destroyers. Jintsuu sent an apologetic look at Indestructible, before sailing over to where the battlecruiser stood on the pier. The long-haired cruiser smiled up at her older counterpart, holding a dainty hand out for the British girl to take. Indestructible hesitantly reached out, on edge for any potential tricks.

There wouldn't be any, however, as the light cruiser gently pulled her much heavier counterpart into the water. Despite how wrong it felt to put a very human body into the water.

Indestructible half-expected to sink like a rock, once she was in the water, no matter what the other girls were doing. However, the moment her feet- and her shoes, perhaps more importantly -touched the water, she started to float on the surface. It was as if she was walking on concrete, not at all like she was in the waves. Even the cold water lapping at her ankles didn't change the feeling.

Wide violet eyes looked down, as she experimentally kicked her foot. Water sprayed into the air like her drive shaft had pushed her old propeller, making her flinch back and a soft, almost silent, giggle come from Jintsuu. Indestructible got the feeling that this girl wasn't much for loud and exciting noises.

Kind eyes turned onto the confused battlecruiser, as the cruiser let go of her hand, pulling away slightly.

"Is this your first time in the water...?" The unasked question was obvious, in hindsight.

"HMS Indestructible," the battlecruiser answered, looking down at her feet instead of at the other girl. "I...just came back yesterday. I've never been in the water like this before. Bloody hell is this what you all feel like?"

Jintsuu just smiled again, "It's like that for everyone. Follow me, I can show you how to sail. Do you know how to summon your rigging, Indestructible?"

"No, I don't." The British girl replied. She looked down at her hands, clenching and unclenching rhythmically. "Fubuki said it would be instinctual. I have no idea what she meant by that."

"Indestructible?" The cruiser noted that the other girl hadn't been talking to her. Jintsuu was observant, if nothing else. "Is something wrong?"

Ignoring the Japanese ship, Indestructible took a deep breath, shutting her eyes and trying to avoid focusing on her situation. Ignoring that she was floating in a way she shouldn't. Instead, she focused on her old hull. The feeling of steel and wood, swaying in the waves underneath her. The bustle of men working their posts, training her weapons on targets. Focused on the memories of Jutland, of dueling SMS Seydlitz after Invincible sank. On the memories of her mighty guns firing at distant...

"You did it!" Jintsuu's soft voice broke in, as Indestructible felt…something.

Well, she felt the sudden weight of her old hull on her back. Turning her head, the battlecruiser's violet eyes widened, as her equally brown hair moved out of the way. Hanging from her back, was a curved piece of wood and metal, in the form of her old hull. The old paint scheme was even there, as she ran a hand along a miniature version of her A-turret. Fourteen-inch guns shone dully in the sunlight, as her shocked gaze reflected off the water.

Was this…?

Whooooa. It feels so right. Like I missed this.

Seeing the 'rigging' on the other girls was one thing. Seeing and feeling her old hull...now that was another thing entirely.

"I did," she finally whispered, shaking her head slightly. "Right, how exactly do I use this? Jintsuu?"

The cruiser just smiled demurely, "Follow me, Indestructible. The targets here are set up for the destroyers. We need you on the battleship range."

Indestructible nodded, pushing her legs- boilers? -to follow along with the light cruiser. She wasn't a battleship, but she was the next best thing.

Of course, all her attention was on moving, so she failed to notice a blonde destroyer joining the others, curious red eyes following along with her.

"Yuudachi-chan!" Fubuki called out, waving at her best friend. "When did you get back?"

Yuudachi, a blonde haired Shiratsuyu-class destroyer, shrugged. "Just today. Fubuki, like, who was that battleship, poi?"

The blonde destroyer, returned from her patrol, looked in the direction she had seen a brown haired kanmusu go. She hadn't recognized the girl, like, she was new. Very new, since Yuudachi thought she had already known all the battleships. She was just with the Hiei sisters after all!

"That was Indestructible-san," Fubuki answered with a happy smile. An oddly happy smile. "I've been showing her around, since the Admiral asked me to! She's really nice, but a bit overwhelmed by everything. I'm glad Jintsuu-san is showing her how to use her rigging."

After saying that, Fubuki looked over at her friend with a completely serious expression. "Also, she's a battlecruiser, not a battleship."

Yuudachi's eyebrow went up, a questioning look in her red eyes, "Indestructible? Isn't that, like, a British name?"

"Yes," her friend nodded. Her smile returned, since she had corrected her friend.

It wasn't, like, her fault. She didn't know what a battlecruiser even was! Japan didn't have any, poi!

"The Admiral said he wasn't sure how she was summoned here, but he's trying to get her home. I think it's because she's Hiei-san's older sister." Fubuki continued, like she hadn't even noticed. She probably didn't. Her friend was nice, but she didn't notice a lot.

"Hiei's..." the taller destroyer blinked slowly. "I didn't know she had a big sister, poi!"

On the other hand, if her older sister was British, that was probably why. Yuudachi wasn't like her friend, and didn't really look at other navies. If she had, she might have known something this important! And if Indestructible had just now been summoned, that meant she probably hadn't met her sisters yet. They might not even know she was here! Yuudachi wondered how they would feel, when they did find out. She knew if Shiratsuyu or Shigure had come back and she hadn't been told at the time, she would have been soooo mad.

Like, seriously. If Indestructible was their sister, they should know she was here! But they hadn't come back from the patrol yet. They had more work to do! Unless...

"I don't think she likes thinking about it," Fubuki spoke softly, as the two girls maneuvered around practice rounds from Sendai and Hibiki. Her words distracted the blonde. "She seems really sad whenever Hiei-san is mentioned."

"But, they're her sisters, poi!" Yuudachi protested, the idea of being sad at having her sisters being hard to believe. She loved her sisters and they loved her.

"Yeah, but she has her British sisters too. I don't think Indestructible-san knows how to act around Hiei-san and the others."

A frown crossed Yuudachi's face, "But wouldn't she want to meet them?"

"I think she does, but doesn't know how to talk to them," her friend sighed softly. Even while water from one of Sendai's practice rounds soaked them both to the bone. It was just a game they played. "I'm so sorry for her...I can't imagine what Indestructible-san feels like."

Neither can I, poi! But I wouldn't want my sisters to not know I was here. I need to go tell her now! And Hiei when she gets back!

Decision made, Yuudachi let a cocky grin cross her face, as she jumped in front of Fubuki. She wouldn't let her friend do better at training than her, even considering the situation!

-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-

It was a tired destroyer who left the training area, sometime later that day. Waving goodbye to Fubuki, who ran towards the battleship training grounds, Yuudachi squared her shoulders and marched off in the direction of the battleship dorms. Hiei-san had said she and her sisters would be back soon, though they had to go on another mission first. Something about Okinawa, Yuudachi didn't quite remember.

Not all of them were gone, though! Indestructible needed to have her sisters, poi!

She couldn't imagine what that felt like, having always had her sisters with her, until she had sunk at the Solomon Islands during the war. And even after the war, her elder sisters like Shigure had always been there when she needed them. So, yeah, Yuudachi couldn't imagine what Hiei and her sisters felt like, not having Indestructible around.

It was why she was heading here, even though Fubuki had said it was better to wait.

I don't want to wait, poi. She needs to know her sister is here!

"Hey Yuudachi," Mutsu was the first battleship to notice her though, as she sat outside the building, reading some book. Or plotting something. Mutsu was always like that, poi.

"Hey Mutsu-san!" Yuudachi waved at the larger woman. "Have you seen Ashitaka?"

The battleship tapped her chin, a sly grin on her face, "Why are you asking?"

"Mutsuuuuu..." the blonde pouted, used to the elder girl's sense of humor by now.

A giggle answered that, as Mutsu put her book down, "Sorry, sorry. If you're looking for her, Ashitaka is in her room. I think she's a bit upset that her sisters aren't taking her on that mission."

Yuudachi couldn't help a shiver, "Oh no, poi..."

"Yup," Mutsu just smiled again, with a rueful headshake for good measure. "Good luck, Yuudachi"

Waving at the battleship, Yuudachi squared her shoulders, and marched into the dorm. She could survive this, and she needed to let the older ships know their sister was back. Even if she could only talk to one of them! Looking at it that way, she could go through any number of Hiei's dishes or Ashitaka's temper.

Right, with that in mind, it was a lot easier to focus. Focus, as the blonde little destroyer walked past the various battleship dorms, intent on one in particular. The one claimed by the Hiei sisters, who tended to sleep together, despite the fact they could have double rooms instead.

Of course, only one of them was actually there right now. For better or worse.

"Ashitaka?" Yuudachi knocked on the door.

"Come on in Yuudachi!" the familiar voice called out, prompting a smiling destroyer to open the door.

"Nice to see you again."

That greeting came from a woman who looked like she could be Yuudachi's sister. Other than her blue eyes. Her long blonde hair was unbound and fell free over her shoulders, as she shifted in her bed. She had clearly been leaning against the wall, idly playing with a model of some sort.

She set that down and swung her legs over her bed. A single blonde eyebrow climbed up her face, and her head was tilted in an obvious question.

Yuudachi just grinned, "Nice to see you too, Ashitaka!"

"So, why are you here Yuudachi?" Ashitaka asked, though she didn't leave her bed. If anything, she looked like she didn't want to leave.

"I met a new girl at training today," the destroyer answered with a wide, toothy grin. "A British girl, poi!"

The youngest of her class turned at that, model completely forgotten, "A British girl? Who was it?"

"Indestructible!"

Perhaps because she wasn't expecting it, the sudden silence was almost spooky. Yuudachi awkwardly looked at the taller blonde, who wore a look of shock on her face. A look that only lasted as long as it took for 'Ashitaka.exe' to reboot. Ashitaka's eyes widened even further. Her mouth opened and closed. She looked at Yuudachi, who looked back with confusion on her face. It went like that for a heartbeat. Two. Three.

"Bye, Yuudachi!"

With that short statement, the battleship shot to her feet and was out the door before Yuudachi could so much as blink. The destroyer could have sworn she got a friction burn from how fast the taller ship went past her. She was also fairly certain battleships didn't move that fast.

All she could do was let out a plaintive, "Poi?"

Well, with summer here (and Youtube sufficing for a 'summer job' meaning more writing time) going to get back to this. In point of fact, this is going to be the second priority behind Purple Phoenix, so hopefully updates will come out fairly quickly. Between the extra writing time and the change in focus and all.

Still going to be using a lot of old material, albeit brought up to more current standards, though. Because the core of the fic is fine. We just weren't satisfied with the overall writing quality or some of the characterization (Indy didn't have enough Kongou in her, Seydlitz needed more than 'Indy Fangirl').

Speaking of character choices, Ashitaka.

Akin to
Eternity we feel that Japan would probably have decided to replace Kongou, once they elected to not get her, if only to keep a cohesive four-ship formation for the Hiei-class. Unlike Eternity, we decided against just being Kongou-II. That's a conscious choice, because while we won't spoil her character arc and such, Ashitaka is not bitter about being a replacement. A lot of Kongou-II's issues in Sheo's fic came from that, which was made worse by being given the name 'Kongou'. That isn't the case with Ashitaka.

Beyond that, well, spoilers :V

As for character design, she's largely based on WSG's iteration of the Dessbote, though for our own take on what she looks like:

(in terms of the actual ship, well, we joke about her being a 'Super Dess'. Not because she's some major improvement, no, but because a few years of development does make her more akin to a half-sister to Hiei than a full repeat of her design. Kinda like Queen Mary compared to Lion, if you want to look at it that way.)

why i got a sinking feeling that Ashitaka is getting the wallflower treatment after what happened with kongou and the events in thier ww2?

And Im wondering if we are going to get to see Indy get more then a little bent out shape about the Japanese governments stance on where she belongs and if Goto will even make appearance in this version

Oh, right. This is the rewrite thread. That explains the deja vu, especially with the first section. I ended up really questioning reality for a moment there.

That probably also means I need a reread.

Oh...I forogot this thread existed! I was confused for a bit, I was like "Didn´t I read this already???" and then I realized this is the rewrite! Looking foward to more British Dess-bote with less angst than the original hopefully. A sad Dess-bote is just wrong! She is made for Burning Love, not being depressed, let´s hope that Hood and her sisters make it there faster and finally have that tea with her.

TFC!

Chapter 3
Chapter 3

"Haaaaaah…"

Indestructible sighed softly, as she dragged herself out of the water. Jintsuu sent her an understanding smile, as the light cruiser went off to join her sister, while the battlecruiser tried to pull herself up. With confidence borne of long, long experience, Indestructible could say she had never felt this tired before. Her old hull had been worked hard, but never had she felt this kind of bone-deep tiredness in her own right. There was something to be said for doing the work herself instead of her crew doing all the hard labor.

It hardly helped that her stomach was growling at her as well, feeling like an empty fuel bunker.

Perhaps it was an empty fuel bunker, she reflected with a rueful chuckle. It was safe to say that she still didn't know half of what was going on with this body. Nor did she really care if anyone knew, in all honesty. She could figure out the particulars of this later.

At that moment, the old battlecruiser wanted nothing more than to be back in a bunk with a plate of warm food. If this was how tiring all drill and training was? Well.

It certainly gave her a new appreciation for her old crew.

"Are you okay Indestructible-san?" Fubuki appeared at the dock, as if out of nowhere. The destroyer's dark hair was plastered to her head by seawater, and she was panting lightly herself.

She didn't look nearly as tired, though, damn her. Destroyers. Endless fonts of energy that make even battlecruisers look like dreadnoughts.

"Yes," the British woman answered. She couldn't keep the dry expression off her face, though, "Just exhausted. This training is..."

The destroyer smiled, as she held out a hand, "Yeah, the first time in the water is like that. You just need some food!"

"I wouldn't say no." Indestructible chuckled, reaching up to take Fubuki's hand. The destroyer couldn't hope to lift her alone, but just providing a bit of support was well within her abilities.

As she was pulled up by the smaller girl, Indestructible idly wondered when she had become so comfortable with her. By all rights, she should be extremely distrustful of the little girl pulling her hand, as she felt her rigging fade away.

It wasn't worth hiding that she still didn't trust Japan further than she could throw it. There was still the simmering pit of abandonment and anger deep in her heart, yet she felt none of that for Fubuki. The destroyer had nothing to do with what had happened to her and had been nothing but kind in the short time she had known her. Not to mention that, really, Indestructible didn't hate Japan or the Japanese people.

She just didn't trust them or like their government very much.

Fubuki has always known what to say, If...if that isn't worth a little trust, I don't bloody know what is.

"Let's head to Mamiya's then," Fubuki smiled again, as the two were once more on solid ground, "She can make enough for both of us!"

"...enough for both of us?" Indestructible smoothed down her skirt, idly amazed at how the water didn't stick to it. "I don't need that much food…do I? And you can't possibly eat that much food, you're a tiny little thing. I think I could carry you with one arm."

Fubuki just giggled in response, as she set off for the restaurant. Leaving a confused Indestructible to trail along behind her, wondering just what she had gotten herself into.

-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-

"Isn't this a bit...much?" Indestructible sent a pleading look at Mamiya, feeling honestly as if she were being treated like visiting royalty. That much food...it was too much! "I don't need all of this! My crew never had this much food!"

It was telling, actually, that she started slipping into a much rougher regional accent, the memories of her construction and her lower-ranks coming back to the fore. She would be impressed that Mamiya understood her, if not for feeling like she was being given too much. This was luxury the likes of which she had never seen, even the odd times she hosted an Admiral.

"Trust me, I've fed a lot of battleships." The supply ship just chuckled heartily, setting another plate before the battlecruiser. "Including your sisters. This is how much I would serve Hiei after a hard patrol."

"But..."

Mamiya just smiled softly, before moving off, leaving Indestructible to stare in shock at the massive bowl of rice and meat in front of her. Fubuki's much smaller bowl looked positively quaint in comparison. She wasn't exactly familiar with Japanese cuisine, but something told her they didn't eat this much!

How am I ever going to finish this much food?

"Go ahead and eat, Indestructible-san!" Fubuki was just grinning cheekily, as she dug into her own food.

"I can't eat all of this!" the battlecruiser protested, shocked at the very idea. She knew none of her old crew would eat this much. It was so much more than what she had eaten the previous day, too.

Fubuki shook her head, amusement on her young face, "All battleships and aircraft carriers eat that much, Indestructible-san. You need to, or you won't be resupplied. I'm a destroyer, so I don't need as much. Look at Akagi-sempai!"

Turning her head in the direction that Fubuki had pointed, Indestructible felt her eyes widen even further, which felt almost impossible. She was fairly certain her eyes were bigger than the plates placed in front of her.

After all, if her bowl was big, it was nothing on the one in front of another brown-haired girl. Said girl was happily munching on her meal, cheeks bulging as rice and meat alike vanished into her mouth. She looked like a particularly hungry squirrel, which in other circumstances, would have had Indestructible giggling. Instead, she simply gawked like a stunned tourist, watching food vanish into an insatiable maw from which there was no return.

The girl in blue next to her shook her head, face a stoic mask under a side-ponytail, as she more demurely ate from just as big a bowl. A sister ship, maybe? As for the first one, she was Akagi, right? And Akagi was...a carrier, if she remembered correctly. Was that why she needed that much food?

Both of those bowls dwarfed her own and made Fubuki look like she was barely eating. Was this what it was like to be a ship girl?

Instead of resupplying in ammunition and fuel, she just ate a truly ludicrous amount of food?

"..."

Well, when in Rome...

Digging into her meal, Indestructible felt a strange mix of guilt and contentment. Guilt at imagining how much food she was eating. Contentment as her weariness slowly faded. It truly did feel like she was being resupplied. There wasn't the clink of steel on steel or the sound of oil flowing into her bunkers, but on the other hand, she still felt the resupply. She felt shells return to magazines, bunkers slosh with new fuel, and storerooms restock themselves.

Her body felt like it was taking on the weight of a combat load, even though nothing outwardly changed. Her body remained the exact same.

This is...a new feeling.

Just like everything else had been, since she had ended up in this body.

"It's good, right?" Fubuki sent her a happy smile, when she saw the small smile on the battlecruiser's face.

"Very," Indestructible nodded, thoughtful expression on her face as she ate. She plopped a soft-boiled egg in her mouth and slurped some noodles. Hmm. "I still don't quite understand how this works, but at least it's simple."

"Yup! All we need to do is eat proper food, and we're ready to go again."

It was useful, to be totally fai...where'd all her food go? Indestructible stared dully down on an empty bowl, blinking slowly. If not for the content noises her quartermasters were making, she'd almost wonder if she had missed something.

She lifted up her bowl, tilting her head to the right. The bowl tilted to the left, as she stared at it with clear confusion crossing her face. Part of her half-expected food to slip out, even though her brown-eyed gaze could find no such remnants left. "What."

Fubuki giggled, "Already done, Indestructible-san?"

"...when did that happen?" The battlecruiser continued to blink, almost tempted to look under the table on the off chance she had just dropped something.

Well, she hadn't realized she'd been eating that fast. Pushing her bowl aside, the battlecruiser felt a flush crawl up her face. She was a proper British lady, not a glutton. She didn't even know how she had eaten all that food already. She felt pleasantly full, and a bit sleepy now. But the point remained.

Indestructible hadn't even realized she could eat that fast. Oh, what Tiger would say if she had seen that…

At least her new…comrade? Friend? She seemed amused, more than anything else.

If anything, the smile on Fubuki's face was comforting, as she said, "Don't worry, we all can eat that fast if we're hungry enough. It's perfectly normal!"

Maybe so, but I still feel as if I ate too fast...

Embarrassment aside, the battlecruiser, if anything, felt sleepier than she had before eating. Maybe it was a sign to take it easy and rest after pushing herself during the training, maybe not. Either way, she felt the need to lay down and rest for a while. If Fubuki noticed that or not was up for debate, but the little destroyer finished her own meal and hopped to her feet.

"Come on, let's get back to the room to get your things. Yuudachi-chan is back, so I need to make sure with her if it's okay for you to stay in there until Admiral can get you your own room!"

My own room...

Part of Indestructible didn't want a room to herself. She wasn't sure she wanted to be alone, in a land so far away from what was her real home. Moreover, the implication of having a room to herself didn't escape her. The idea of having her own room implied a sense of permanence she had no desire to contemplate. She could not, would not, stay in Japan. She wanted to go home and serve with her navy. Not stay in the country that had thrown her aside.

"Lead the way, Fubuki." She didn't say any of that, of course. Indestructible just smiled at the destroyer and waved her on. "I'll be right behind you."

When the two reached the destroyer dorms, it was to find an empty room. No sign that anyone had even entered it since they had left that morning, even. It was exactly the same. Right down to the rolled-up futon that Indestructible had used the previous night.

"Oh, I thought Yuudachi-chan would be back by now," Fubuki pouted a little as she kicked her shoes off.

Indestructible trailed behind her. In all honesty, she was somewhat relieved by that.

Not that she had anything at all against this 'Yuudachi', but she'd had her fill of 'new things' for one day. Another destroyer might be pushing things a bit. Really, she'd much rather have Fubuki talk to the other destroyer first. Fubuki got her in a way that still befuddled her at the best of times. Fubuki could explain things to the other destroyer and make sure she knew Indestructible's boundaries. Destroyers...didn't normally have much in the way of 'personal space', from what Indestructible remembered of her time aboard her old hull.

Even Jintsuu hadn't exactly been a comfortable experience and the cruiser had been nothing but kind, polite, and soft-spoken. Old pains didn't go away overnight, alas.

"Should she have been?" Nonetheless, Indestructible was still polite in asking that question.

Fubuki only looked over her shoulder and sighed heavily, "She should have been! I wanted to let her meet you, too." She pouted, which was admittedly adorable and made Indestructible feel the sudden urge to pinch her cheeks. Before finishing with another sigh and a heartfelt, "I was going to talk to her about throwing you a welcoming party."

"I feel like that should probably be a surprise, but maybe that's just me." Indestructible pointed out with a smile crossing her lips.

"But it isn't a surprise party, it's a welcoming party!"

With a soft laugh, the battlecruiser raised her hands in surrender, "Message received and understood, ma'am."

Fubuki giggled, clearly amused by the reaction. She resolutely strode over to her bed, clearly intending to lay down and relax a little. Indestructible moved to do the same with her currently rolled up futon...

Only for a loud noise in the hallway to get the attention of both girls. The sound of feet stampeding down the hall at flank speed, uncaring of noise or anyone in the way, if the sound of angry girls was any indication. Turning her head, the British woman looked at the Japanese destroyer, an eyebrow going up in a silent question. 'Is this something normal here, or am I going crazy?'

Fubuki just shook her head, clearly just as confused as she herself was. Well, that hadn't been any help.

Turning her head again, Indestructible warily watched the door, hearing the stampede get ever closer. She sincerely hoped they weren't coming for this room. That was the last thing she really wanted to deal with when, pleasantly full stomach or not, she was still bone tired. She hadn't gotten good sleep, she had worked her stern off in training, and she really just wanted to lay down. Not deal with...

Well, so much for that hope.

...another Japanese girl slamming the door open, without a care in the world. Or was she Japanese?

Because the girl staring at her with wide, vivid blue eyes, did not look very Japanese. Her facial features were classically Asian, sure, but her skin was very pale. Her blue eyes and blonde hair wouldn't have looked out of place on a German recruiting poster from when Indestructible had sailed off on her final mission. And her hull looked positively British, from what Indestructible could see in that weird 'see the ship and the girl' thing she was still wrapping her head around.

Long, lean lines. Graceful hull form. A pair of turrets on her bow, leading back towards another pair that were spaced...a bit...apart...

............

Oh bloody he---

That was as far as Indestructible got in her thought process, before the very European-looking girl had tackled her to the floor in a crash of two battlecruisers colliding with one another. Fubuki squawked on her bed, as Indestructible flailed wildly and tried to get the other woman off of her. Unfortunately, for all her considerable horsepower, moving a good thirty-thousand tons of ship wasn't happening. Especially not when aforesaid ship was using all of her own power to hug the life out of you.

Indestructible was fairly sure she saw her life flash before her eyes, actually, as she groaned from the tightness of the hug.

"Ashitaka-san!" Fubuki cried out, running over to try and help. Her tiny hands grabbed onto the back of the blonde woman, trying in vain to tug her away. "You need to let Indestructible-san breathe! You're choking her!"

"I--I'm fine, Fubuki." Indestructible wasn't choking, though admittedly, she wasn't very comfortable either. Ashitaka? That...I know that name.

The blonde did pull back, eventually, though not through Fubuki's efforts. And it was only far enough back for wet blue eyes to stare into stunned violet. Pink lips pursed slightly, before whispering a soft, "Onee-san."

Vaguely remembering that to mean something like 'big sister', Indestructible smiled back. "So, you're my baby sister. Right?"

Ashitaka flushed bright pink before shyly nodding, "Y-yeah, I am. I've heard all about you, too, onee-san."

Indestructible chuckled and sat up, though Ashitaka seemed reluctant to let go. "Only good things, I hope."

Above the two, Fubuki looked completely lost and confused. Her head snapped between the sisters, as her mouth opened and closed like a befuddled fish. It was almost amusing. As for Indestructible, she could understand the reaction. Her general feelings on Japan weren't exactly a secret. Fubuki was probably wondering why she was so comfortable.

Japan or not, this is one of my sisters. How could I ever not be happy to see her? She chuckled, internally, and resisted the urge to shake her head. Fair enough, I wasn't planning on meeting one of them this soon. I wanted more time to...get used to everything. But I guess it's easier this way? Ashitaka is...

Her baby sister. Her replacement. Plainly speaking, Indestructible loved all her sisters, but didn't have the same emotional baggage with Ashitaka. If she had been tackled by Hiei or Haruna or Kirishima...it would have hurt so much more. They were her original sisters. They were taken from her by the Japanese government, so long ago. She didn't have the first idea what to say to them. How to apologize or beg forgiveness. How to talk to them after decades pining away for each other, on both sides of the world.

"You're...not what I was expecting." Ashitaka spoke up again, pulling a bit further away. Her blue eyes looked Indestructible up and down, as if committing everything she saw to memory.

Indestructible simply shrugged, "I'm sure Hiei told you all sorts of stories. I'm some sort of giant who can do no wrong, who has perfect teeth and I'm the most beautiful woman on Earth and..."

She trailed off, as Ashitaka's blush grew ever stronger and she had a strange and sudden onset of coughing. Indestructible smiled widely. Yup. She hit that nail on the head, didn't she?

"You see, I expected that. It's exactly what Iri would have done if she were here. Just to try and get a rise out of me." She shook her head bemusedly and threw her free hand- the other one in a death grip courtesy of Ashitaka -up into the air.

Ashitaka looked at her curiously, "Iri?"

"Irresistible, my younger sister." Indestructible pulled herself to her feet, and tugged Ashitaka over to Fubuki's bed. "Fubuki? Do you mind if we borrow the bed for this?"

Fubuki seemed lost, poor girl, but she nodded anyway. "A-a-ah, I don't mind! Not at all!"

It was amusing how she waved her hands in front of her face like a panicked schoolgirl. She looked like a panicked schoolgirl in that moment, too. Indestructible decided she'd get the girl some ice cream later as thanks for putting up with this. First, though, she wanted to talk to her baby sister. There were so many questions she could ask Ashitaka, and she was certain the girl had just as many of her own.

The one thing she refused to do, though, was ask about Hiei and the others. She wanted to meet them without preconceived notions of what to expect...

Well, other than the ones she'd been carrying for years.

In any case, right now, she wanted to know more about the woman in front of her. Not her missing sisters.

"So!" In that vein, Indestructible plopped down on the bed, as Ashitaka sat next to her. She smiled softly at the younger woman, who now that she looked, had some family resemblance to her. "How about we start with you telling me a bit about yourself, hmm?"

Ashitaka smiled and began to tell Indestructible of her life. Of how she had been built to replace her in the Hiei-class. Of how she was an improved design that let her do more and better things that her sisters. They always teased her over that, calling her 'big little sister'. Ashitaka took it in stride and just laughed it off. She was babied by them, too. Always treated with kid gloves. She spoke of her sisters always worrying when she went into combat during the war. They never wanted her out of their sight for long. And always jumped her when she came back.

"...honestly, they didn't need to. I could handle myself." Ashitaka crossed her arms and tilted her chin to the ceiling.

It was so much like Irresistible in that moment that Indestructible could only laugh at the image. Mentally. Vocally, she simply said, "You never considered yourself my replacement, did you?"

Ashitaka looked her way, with a shy smile. It was the kind of smile that Indestructible felt her heart warmed by. One filled with a familial love and care. Something confirmed, as the blonde spoke, "No, not once. I was your replacement, to the Navy, but I never was to our sisters. I was their baby sister." She held Indestructible's hand and gave it a tight squeeze. "They never treated me like I was you, or like I somehow took your place. I was Ashitaka, the baby sister. Not 'Kongou's replacement'."

Indestructible couldn't resist the twitch at that name. "That's good. I was worried I would have to scold Hiei when I see her!"

When she said that, she held her hand up and her face took on such a 'comically serious' look that both Ashitaka and Fubuki broke down into giggles. Indestructible smiled at the reaction and inwardly marveled at how easily she had slipped back into this persona. It was like Ashitaka's blonde hair was replaced by Irresistible's auburn or Implacable's black. She wasn't in Japan, uncomfortable with her surroundings.

She was in Britain, laughing with her sisters as they got into a match of 'who could annoy the other more'.

This is what family means. We've never even met before today, but I love Ashitaka with all my heart. And it's so easy to talk to her like this, too!

Still, no good feeling could last forever. Ashitaka looked at her eldest sister with a considering glance, working her jaw nervously. Indestructible noticed and tilted her head, "Something wrong?"

"Not...wrong." Ashitaka looked away for a second, before squaring her shoulders and turning back. "Onee-san, what do you think about your name?"

Ah. Ah. Wasn't that a loaded question?

Indestructible sighed deeply and patted Ashitaka's hand, "I'm Indestructible. That's my name. I..." She blew out the sigh and shook her head. "I don't hate Japan, but please, don't call me 'Kongou'. It isn't who I am, not anymore."

"But you're still my onee-san, right?" Ashitaka asked as if she expected her head to be bitten off. She was so shy about it that she hid behind a curtain of blonde hair, only the barest hint of blue visible behind it.

To that, Indestructible could only move her hand to pat Ashitaka's head this time. A loving, gentle, pat on the head. "No matter what else, I'm your big sister. Just like I'm Hiei's big sister."

Ashitaka seemed relieved by that, some tension leaving her body. "Good! I'll try to remember what to call you, then, Indestructible onee-san."

"You could drop that and just call me Indestructible." The British woman pointed out with a small smile. "Or, hell, call me 'Indy' if you want. It's what your big sisters do."

"Like you call Irresistible...'Iri', right?"

At the nod of affirmation, Ashitaka leaned against her sister and sighed contentedly. She didn't seem inclined to move either, which was honestly fine with Indestructible. The only thing that would make this better would be having her British sisters present. She could endure hours of Iri's teasing for the chance to hug her like Ashitaka was hugging her arm right now. She dearly wanted to see them again. To apologize for leaving them like she did.

Ah well. She would return home soon enough. She knew that. And it wouldn't surprise her if her sisters came charging across the world to get her back, either. It was what she would do.

"Oh!" Indestructible snapped her fingers and sent a look down on the suddenly alert Ashitaka. "There was a young man at the...summoning, was it? He left before I could get a good look at him, though. Do you know who that was?"

Her sister sent a flat look her way, "That was Commander Goto. He is the type to call you by your old name. Actually, I think he doesn't like me much. I'm not sure why."

The way she said that made it clear she was sure why. Indestructible had a sour look cross her face at that, "Oh. Is he that kind of man?"

"Yes." Ashitaka replied, before finishing with a dry, "Fuck him."

The sudden cursing, so much like Irresistible, had Indestructible break down into helpless giggles. Not helped by how Ashitaka looked smug as all hell when she said it. Oh, yes, she was going to get along swimmingly with her baby sister.

Fubuki, meanwhile, looked scandalized, "Ashitaka-san! You can't say that about Commander Goto! He's one of our superior officers."

"You're thinking it too, Fubuki, don't you deny it." Ashitaka wagged her finger in Fubuki's general direction.

The destroyer sputtered out a weak denial that had Indestructible breaking down even more. Oh, she could get used to this. No matter how awkward the rest of her situation was.

Right, there's that. One of the harder things to write, because of getting Ashitaka's character down and showing more of Kongou in Indy. Hopefully that came across well enough.

You'll also note that, while the start is a lot of old material, this one really firmly breaks from the old story. That's very intentional. Ashitaka, here, allows for gently working Indy into her Japanese sister's lives. Instead of jumping her in head first with Hiei and the others who, while well-meaning, tend to idolize the idea of Kongou a tad too much. The reality of Indy is something they're not really thinking about.

Not out of any malice, obviously, but just because they've spent their lives wondering 'what if'. Not that different from Indy, just...in a way that pokes at her trauma.

She isn't going to have that happen right out of the gate this time :V

(Currently thinking of alternating this with Purple Phoenix for the summer. A chapter of one, one week, and then a chapter of the other the next week. Ideally. We'll see. >.>)

I see so Goto is going be a problem that Indy or his commanding officer will have to deal with. Indy I take it is more reserve than Kongo ever thought of being waiting to see if she has more British mannerism that she would if Japan didn't leave her high and dry.

Are we going get to see the two governments fight over Indy because I doubt she is going be impressed with the Japanese with them behaving like she matters now would they have cared if she showed up in the UK.

Considering that a convoy of battlecruisers (who are unlikely to take no for an answer) are likely to soon make their way from Britain to Japan, I feel like an opportunity to give Goto a massive headache will soon arrive. And the rest of the base will tremble from the pure chaos.

I'm surprised at Ashitaka's appearance being that of someone with mixed heritage. You've mentioned that there's a bevy of factors that determine a shipgirl's appearance. Based on the reasoning you gave for Indy being as white as can be, I'd expect Ashitaka to be solidly Japanese. Maybe with a hint of European ancestry. For her to be blonde-haired & blue-eyed implies something beyond design inspirations. I'm guessing she got captured at some point.

On a different note, this paragraph, to me, reads as Indy being the one talking. But the next one is Ashitaka talking about herself. Either the last sentence needs to be adjusted so that it's Indy prompting Ashitaka, or the whole thing needs to be revamped to highlight that it's Ashitaka speaking.
"So!" In that vein, Indestructible plopped down on the bed, as Ashitaka sat next to her. She smiled softly at the younger woman, who now that she looked, had some family resemblance to her. "How about we start with me telling you a bit about myself, hmm?"

Ashitaka smiled and began to tell Indestructible of her life.

Not really tbh. Even within Kancolle canon, there are a number of Japanese Kanmusu with non-native (or outright unnatural, for that matter) hair and eye colorations. Yuudachi, Atago and Shimakaze with blonde hair, Kawakaze and Arashi with red hair, Yuubari and Yamakaze have green hair, Murakumo, Samidare, and Minazuki have blues, and Akashi, Uzuki, and Harusame all lean towards pink.

The eyes too, you've got Yuudachi's green/signature red kai-ni eyes, Atago is similarly green, Tatsuta has purple eyes while Tenryuu has gold, and there are a number of other Japanese shipgirls with blue or green eyes.

Bottom line: Shipgirls appearances aren't really required to match their nationality/race.

Typo fixed.

Anyway, yeah, see above. While we tend towards making actual justifications and reasons for our own designs…well. There's a couple things here.

Indy is something of a special case. One can convincingly argue that regular Dess is more European in her features than Japanese. In comparison to Kongou, Indy has really no reason to look Japanese. If you want to get into the spiritual metaphysics of it all…she doesn't *want* to be Japanese anymore, and that has some impact as well.

(In addition to what we've already gone over)

Ashitaka, meanwhile, is perfectly in keeping with other KC designs. Or WSG or AL or…any botegirls, really. Japanese ships not looking at all Japanese is common.

No one would say Yuudachi looks like your typical Japanese girl, but there's nothing about her that would justify that. It's just her design.

As for 'European features', that's as much Indy projecting as anything. Ashitaka is her sister so Indy is going to be looking for anything of herself in her sister. Toss in that she has blonde hair and blue eyes, and you get this result.

Worth remembering that Indy has only directly interacted with Fubuki, Jintsuu, and Mamiya. And while green eyes (Fubuki) or brown hair (the other two) isn't 'stereotypical Japanese' to a woman of the early 20th century…it's not as distinctly 'European' as blonde hair and blue eyes.

She'd have a similar reaction to Yuudachi or any other girl with very distinctly 'non-Japanese' looks. Just with less 'looking for some of herself' in them.

(Out of universe, again, Ashitaka is a direct reference to WSG and AL Kongou. As a call back to her being 'Kongou II' in a way)

Compared to the original, I think think this one is much better. Indestructible is much more natural interacting with her family (or at least one of them).

I always found the previous incarnation forced when Dess interacted with her sisters. Of course Hiei Kirishima and Haruna have yet to show up here, but so far you have shown us much better how this Indestructible thinks and feels. At least, IMO.

I also appreciate how much more Kongo-appropriate cheerful and friendly she is. The original Indestructible was kind of dour.

Dunno why, but in my head cannon the Japanese admiral trying to call her kongo is from the original timeline and is a bit to attached to his kongo but something happened and he woke up here. Still a shitty guy though

Chapter 4
Chapter 4

While Indestructible began a new life in Japan, temporary though that may be, events continued on the other side of the globe. And for all the joy Indestructible felt in her meeting with Ashitaka, only frustration reigned in the British Isles.

For HMS Hood, flagship of the Royal Navy's shipgirl force, strode through her homebase. Her long legs carried her with a purpose, as a scowl took shape on her face. That expression was rare enough to unnerve any who saw her. The way she moved, stalking forward, did little to help the image. Destroyers scattered with shudders down their spines. Battleships wondered who had gotten on Hood's nerves to such an extent. Even a couple aircraft carriers, with their nerves- and flight decks -of steel...flinched. And ducked out Hood's way, muttering about how some poor fool was going to be smacked around. None of them knew the truth, of course. How could they? The news about Indestructible's return would spread. Gossip always did.

And 'ole Indy' was quite well known. The big sister of the Royal Navy, in a lot of ways, even if she was melancholic sometimes. Even the ships that came about after she sank knew of her, from their seniors.

Hood...well, Hood knew Indestructible quite well, indeed.

I can't believe, after all this time waiting, the bloody Japanese got her. Why? I know that Indy didn't like them very much, even though she missed her other sisters. Hood's scowl deepened. It didn't make a lick of sense to her. Bloody hell, what am I going to tell her sisters? They're going to be peeved like you wouldn't believe.

For her part, Hood wasn't angry. Not truly. She was confused, frustrated, and pensive. On a battlecruiser of her power, it looked enough like anger to send a destroyer- was that Zubian? -flailing out of her way. Hood would normally have sent an apologetic look her way, but right now, the battlecruiser was focused. She had a destination, a task, and she was going to do it.

At least until one girl didn't move out of her way. A slim blonde, who raised an elegant eyebrow her way. "Hello to you, too, Hood. Should I be concerned how...serious you are?"

That was Renown. While slimmer and less imposing than Hood, the older battlecruiser was imposing in her own way. Not surprising, really, when she was the last survivor of her type. At least in the Royal Navy. Renown had seen two wars, and had lived out the entirety of the Second World War. She had even remained in service longer than Irresistible or Implacable, in that regard.

She was one of very few ships that could stare Hood down without flinching.

"Do you know where Irresistible and Implacable are?" Hood remained focused, though, as she looked down on Renown.

Who stared back up with her eyebrows furrowed slightly, "They're in their room, last I checked. I don't believe either of them have any missions scheduled for the next little bit." Renown frowned and looked at Hood. Really looked at her. "Something's happened, hasn't it? Does it have to do with...?"

She didn't need to finish the sentence. Hood looked away, green eyes refusing to meet blue. Renown stared for a second more, before sighing deeply. The older battlecruiser stepped aside and brought an arm up to weakly gesture towards the room in question.

"Well, best see to that, Hood. I imagine you won't have a fun time."

Hood just nodded jerkily, adjusted her Nelsonian hat, and walked past Renown. Here we go.

Walking past Renown, the taller girl soon arrived at her destination. An innocuous door, the same as many others in the barracks. The only personalized touch being the names 'Iri' and 'Implacable' scrawled on a placard hung on a nail. In other circumstances, Hood might have rolled her eyes and smiled at how it reflected the personalities. Right now, she simply squared her shoulders and reached out to knock upon the door. A quick one-two rapping of her knuckles. Just enough to announce her presence and get the attention of the other battlecruisers.

"Come on in, whoever that is!" Irresistible was the one to respond, a jovial and deep rumble.

Squaring her shoulders again, Hood swung the door open, "Hello, Iri, Implacable."

Both of the sisters were, indeed, in their room. Irresistible was sprawled out on the bed, lazily leafing through a magazine of some sort. The woman wore a loose blouse and a short skirt, as her legs idly kicked back and forth. She looked up and sent a crooked grin Hood's way, along with a dismissive wave. For all her apparent laziness, though, her reddish eyes were sharp beneath her mop of reddish-brown hair. And her attention didn't return to the magazine, either.

Implacable, for her part, looked almost nothing like her elder sibling. Either in appearance or mannerism. In contrast to Iri's short mop of hair, Implacable wore her space-black locks in a long ponytail. Her bright green eyes were more serious than Irresistible's red eyes, as she looked out from an equally stoic face. Implacable, while not without a sense of humor, was always the 'serious' one. Even her clothing was more conservative and serious, insofar as it was a proper uniform. When she was in the base, the woman never did dress casually.

Iri would probably call her clothes and hobbies boring, Hood reflected in a moment of amusement. Her lips crinkling at the corners, when she saw Implacable place a paintbrush down as she turned away from a landscape painting. Yeah, that was about right, wasn't it?

"Hood," the youngest of the Indestructible sisters replied, with a short nod as she set her paintbrush down. "Did you need us for something?"

"Yeah, I thought we weren't going to sortie again until the French got another supply shipment through the Chunnel?" Irresistible added, setting her magazine down. She remained splayed out over her bed, though.

Hood shook her head, her hat keeping her hair from swaying with the motion, "It's not about a sortie. I dearly wish it was, if I'm being honest."

"Okaaaay." Irresistible frowned, shifting to look better at Hood. "Hood, you're never this serious with us. What happened? Did someone get hit?"

"No, no, nothing like that." Hood shook her head again, though she did send a vaguely insulted look at Irresistible. She could be serious with them! "Actually, before I go on, a question. Have you ever changed your third bed out?"

All three sets of eyes shifted to look at the third bed in the bunk room. That bed was lovingly cared for. It wasn't covered in dust or anything like that. But it was also just the basic, military issue bedding. It hadn't been customized or messed with at all. It just innocently sat there, as Implacable hummed deep in her throat. The dark-haired woman turned away and sent Hood a contemplative look. One that peered deep into her soul, past any defenses Hood may or may not have had. Implacable had that talent. To see right through you like you weren't even there.

"We haven't done anything with the bed." Her smooth, soft tones echoed in the silent room. Green eyes stared into Hood's slightly darker eyes, a small frown crossing her lips. "That's Indestructible's bed. We wouldn't want to presume about her tastes, so we haven't changed it out."

Irresistible nodded along, as she actually sat up. "Yeah. I mean, sis over there is kinda boring." She waved at Implacable, who turned that green stare on her now. Iri just grinned. "I hope Indy won't be the same, but we didn't want to just assume what she'd like, y'know? None of us knew anything about decorating before all of, well, this."

While that was enough to cause Hood to crack a small smile, she didn't have it for long. The seriousness of the situation reflected itself in how she squared her shoulders, and looked both sisters in the eye.

Even Iri returned the look with similar seriousness.

"What if I told you she was back?" Hood spoke, internally shoring up bulkheads and closing watertight doors.

This is only going to go one of two ways. And I would rather not have it be the violent approach.

One could have heard a pin drop, as the two older battlecruisers processed that sentence. Processed it, before the middle sister let out an entirely improper squeal of joy, and pulled her youngest sister into a tight hug. Stoic Implacable had a small but genuine smile of her own, as she looked over at Hood.

"Where is she?" Her voice had softened, although her eyes remained sharp. Hood could see the thoughts whirling behind the green gaze.

The youngest battlecruiser in the room winced. Hood's crew continued their efforts, as she walked up to the other two women.

"Hood?" Irresistible narrowed her eyes, the effect emphasized by their reddish coloring, "What aren't you telling us, little sister?"

Technically, Hood was more of a distant cousin if one used her design. That aside, the Indestructible sisters- especially the eldest girl -tended to view the younger battlecruisers as siblings more than cousins.

It was a quirk of those girls, and one that made Hood quite happy despite herself. Her own sisters had never been built so...it was nice, having family. She was quite pleased to consider them her big sisters.

That being said...

"She was summoned," Hood replied, very slowly and carefully. Her hands came up, to forestall the inevitable explosion. "...in Japan."

"Ja..." Irresistible, normally talkative to a fault, opened and closed her mouth slowly. She looked rather like someone who just took a metal bar to the face. Or perhaps a high explosive shell to the bridge.

For her part, Implacable took over for her sister, voice hardened from its normal soft tones, "Japan? Why would she possibly…"

The older woman trailed off. Her voice turned cold as ice, reminding Hood that for all her soft spoken nature, Implacable was the one with the most combat experience in the room. "They're intending to keep her there. That's why you're so keyed up."

Hood winced again, "Yes."

A hand slammed into a bed. Red eyes glared out, as a deep voice growled, "Like hell they are, those goddam–"

Before Irresistible could really get going, Hood continued with, "The Admiral has no intention of allowing that. And I can assure you that our government will feel the same." She sighed deeply and shook her head. Blonde hair, beneath her hat, bobbed with the motion. "On a personal level, if I weren't needed here, I would be sailing there to drag her back myself."

The tough facade Hood put up for the media crumpled, as she sat down next to the closest girls she had to sisters. She felt the same as they did, at the idea of Indestructible being stuck across the world. Her mind flashed back to the joking they had done, in happier times. How Indestructible, whenever she wasn't thinking back to the Great War, would treat her like a beloved baby sister.

And now she was back. Indestructible was back, in a country that had abandoned her.

I never would have known her, if that hadn't happened. I don't know if I should be happy or angry about that, and I never have. Hood brought a hand up to wipe at her brow, a pensive frown forming on her face. No, that doesn't matter. What matters is that she's stuck there.

Stuck in a country that had left her behind, and was now trying to steal her out from under her adopted homeland. And for all her strong words, Hood couldn't do a bloody thing about it.

She was too vital, for morale and combat, to leave the Atlantic. The Admiralty didn't even let her sail far from the British Isles, and only then under heavy escort. Hood couldn't remember the last time she saw real combat. The higher ups were petrified about another 'golden BB' hitting her.

As if I'm some delicate flower that needs protecting! Hah!

It was enough to make her clench her fist, and wish she could give those men a piece of her mind…

"We have to get her back."

…Hood's fist relaxed, at the sharp words. Irresistible was acting every bit her namesake, when she hopped to her feet. The woman slammed a fist into her open palm, a glare staring at nothing in particular. She really didn't realize, half the time, how much her red eyes reinforced that kind of expression.

"Yes," Implacable nodded along with her elder sister, smoothing out her skirt as she got to her feet. She brushed her long black hair back, and held a hand out to Hood, "The Admiral won't try to stop us, correct?"

Hood just smiled sadly and took the hand, "Not at all. In fact, he'll probably pull some strings to get you help." As she was pulled to her feet, the youngest woman in the room sent a longing look at her sisters-in-all-but-blood. "Make sure you bring her back, alright?"

She clenched Implacable's hand. Hood leaned into Irresistible's shoulder hug, as the other woman moved to her side.

"I still need to talk to her. I…never really got to thank her, for taking me in like she did."

The famous battlecruiser had sunk before the woman who was her mentor and elder sister-figure. In addition, she had been the first British woman to return, spending so much time waiting for Indestructible.

And to top it all off, she was stuck in Britain. It was up to her sisters to bring Indestructible back, because Hood couldn't.

"Don't worry, little sister," Irresistible's cocky grin was back in full force. Her shoulder hug tightened as she rapped her free hand against her chest. "We will get her back. Come hell or high water, the Japanese aren't keeping our sister away from us. Even if we have to drag her out of there."

"It wouldn't be the first time we have had to fight the Japanese surface fleet," Implacable nodded, a distant look in her green eyes. Age old memories reflected in that long, cold, stare.

"Try to do it without fighting," Hood couldn't help a small smile crossing her face. The kind of fond smile a baby sister gave her elder siblings, when they let go and left the room.

"No promises!~" Irresistible gave a jaunty wave back, as both sisters left the room. The last thing Hood saw was Implacable, holding her fists tight to her side.

I hope this goes well.

Hood knew she would be seeing mountains of paperwork for this. Pounds of red tape that needed to be cut through. And, yet, she didn't really mind. Admiral Smith would sort out the logistics of it all, and they would figure things out together. No matter what, Indestructible would be coming home. Where she belonged. Hood couldn't help but smile at the thought…

…before the smile faded to a deep groan as she looked out the window. The window facing towards the European mainland.

"I suppose I should ring up Bismarck."

A certain blonde battlecruiser was going to worm her way into the 'rescue mission' whether the Brits wanted her or not. Best get that out of the way now.

Japan

On the other side of the globe, Admiral Takeda straightened his hat. The man was exhausted, and it showed in his face. The lines across his aged visage had deepened, and bags were present beneath his eyes. Verbally sparring with the Diet never got any simpler, nor easier. He was an old hand at it, by this point, with how often he argued over resource allocations or strategies for using the Kanmusu.

That did not make it particularly fun. This latest meeting had seen him cut back on every desire to raise his voice and dress those old men down like wet behind the ears cadets.

They truly don't understand. Not how little Indestructible cares for our nation, not how the British will react, and not how one singular battlecruiser does little to change our situation. Takeda was more and more convinced that trying to keep Indestructible had little to do with military necessity.

It was a matter of pride and 'she returned in Japan. She should remain here, where she always should have been'.

Bastards. And on that note, he was going to have words with Commander Goto later.

"That's for tomorrow," Takeda mused, as he lowered his hands. Well, no point in delaying.

He reached out and knocked on Fubuki's door, figuring that was likely where Indestructible was. It was rather doubtful that she would be wandering the base. Not so soon.

His assumption was proven correct when, not even a moment after his hand left the door, it was opened. Indestructible was the one to open the door, with a tired and pleased smile on her face. "Ah, Admiral. I was wondering when you'd need me."

Takeda smiled back, inwardly letting out a relieved sigh. So, nothing blew up while I was occupied. Good.

"Need you? No." He stepped back, allowing Indestructible out of the room. Behind her, before the door shut, Takeda thought he saw a glimpse of blonde hair sprawled on the floor. Ashitaka?

Indestructible stared at him suspiciously, "Hmm. If you don't need me, then why are you here?"

"Simple, really." The old man smiled and held his hand out. "I thought you would enjoy the chance to 'call home', as it were."

The woman in front of him gaped like a fish. Takeda chuckled softly, as a sound vaguely reminiscent of a boiling tea kettle emerged from her mouth. Considering the entire thing with Kanmusu, it was entirely possible there was a boiling pot somewhere in there.

Then her mouth slammed shut and Indestructible grabbed his hand, pistoning it up and down, "Of course I would, I've been wanting to talk to everyone and I have so much to say and my sisters are–"

In that moment, Takeda saw Indestructible's long brown hair and violet eyes shift. Replaced by short cropped brown, and gray-purple. She really was Hiei's sister, through it all.

"Calm down, Indestructible. You'll rip my arm out." Takeda's voice was gentle, yet chiding, as the battlecruiser flushed bright pink.

Her hand did not relinquish its grasp, however. She seemed to have forgotten whatever grievances she had with Japan, in that moment.

"Sorry, sorry," she didn't look very sorry. The very British woman simply smiled again, "Let myself get a bit too excited there, didn't I?"

Takeda rolled his eyes good-naturedly, "Understandably so, I think." He chuckled at her deepening blush, before gently guiding her away from Fubuki's room.

Best not bring Ashitaka along for this. He was only expecting to see Blake in this call, but he'd rather have Ashitaka- and the others -have their first meeting with their British siblings in person. It didn't feel right to do that over video conference. Neither did this, really, but Indestructible deserved at least this much.

So, as she did her best to not look him in the eye, Takeda guided the young woman to his office. Her violet eyes looked around the room, when they entered, clearly trying to figure out how they would contact Britain.

I do enjoy this part. And I'm not even one of those young-bloods who actually know how most of this works. Takeda laughed internally, as he let go of the battlecruiser. "The screen ahead of you, Indestructible."

"...screen?" She repeated, curiously. Indestructible shifted her gaze to the large, almost wall-overtaking, glass panel. Her head tilted almost like a curious puppy, brown hair shifting over her shoulders. "Wait, that's how we'll call home? Not a telephone or radio or…"

Takeda simply sat at his desk, as the screen lit up with a rotating connection circle, "Modern technology, my dear. Things have changed, quite a bit, compared to the 1940s."

"I can tell." Indestructible sent him a small smile, over her shoulder, before returning her attention to the screen. "I do believe my captain is currently crying in a corner of the bridge. What I would have given to have something like this…"

Filing that away as another 'quirk of these women', Takeda leaned back in his chair. The moment he did so, the connection went through.

He had never seen a woman jump to attention quite like Indestructible did, in that moment, as Blake's face appeared on the screen. He looked about as tired as Takeda felt, but the man was still wearing his finely pressed uniform.

And the sight of an Admiral, of her own country, had Indestructible snapping off a sharp salute with her back ramrod straight. Even so, on the reflection of the screen, Takeda noted a small smile on her lips.

"At ease, Indestructible. There's no need to be so formal right now." Blake smiled widely, as he looked relieved at seeing the woman.

Not that Takeda could blame him.

"Ah…right, sorry, sir." For her part, Indestructible didn't quite relax, although she did drop the salute. "I'm not used to all of…this."

Blake laughed. A full on, happy, laugh. "No, you wouldn't be. I still remember trying to explain to Hermes how modern jets worked. I don't think I've ever seen someone so confused in my life."

Considering Indestructible tilting her head, that was something she would need to be coached through as well. For the moment, though, Takeda coughed lightly, "I think that story can wait, Blake."

"Probably true." Blake didn't seem put out by that. He did let a more serious expression cross his lips, though, "Right, Daiki. Hood already talked to Irresistible and Implacable. I suspect they'll be leaving within the day."

"I see." Takeda slumped in his seat. "Well, I appreciate the warning at least."

Indestructible, meanwhile, gasped softly, "My…sisters? Hood?"

Blake's eyes shifted to Indestructible, as he nodded, "They're all back and completely fine, Indestructible. Although probably rather put out that you came back in Japan, of all places."

"It wasn't as if I chose this!" Indestructible crossed her arms, all military protocol forgotten. She might have been pouting, too. "I would rather have come back there. Britain is my home."

Takeda winced, Blake smiled widely, and Indestructible tilted her chin up. Yup. This was about what the Japanese Admiral had expected.

Still, as she lowered her head back down, Indestructible's voice softened, "So…I'll finally have my entire family together." She wrapped her arms around her chest, shrinking in on herself, "I wanted this for so long, and now I don't know how I'll handle it."

"If you want unsolicited advice?" Blake spoke, with a hint of fatherly affection, "Just enjoy the moment. From what I've heard of your Japanese sisters, they'll love you and the others. Right, Daiki?"

"Perhaps a bit too much, where Hiei is concerned." Takeda nodded, sagely. And fought down the urge to rub his brow.

Oh yes. Hiei might love her sister a bit too much. She wasn't going to know how to react to how Indestructible actually was, compared to the idealized vision of Kongou in her mind.

Regardless, he looked to Indestructible, who had relaxed a little. "You've already met Ashitaka, I take it. That's good. She's going to be the easiest one to handle."

"She's a good girl." Indestructible automatically replied, before giggling under her breath. "It was…something I didn't know I needed."

The three lapsed into silence, at that, before Blake coughed lightly. "Well, as good as it is to see you, Indestructible, I am on a bit of a time table. There are a couple things I need to talk to Daiki about. How about you go talk to your sister some more?"

Indestructible looked up, staring at the screen, then looking over her shoulder at the Japanese Admiral.

Takeda returned the look, with a small jerk of his head towards the door. "Go on, I'll let you know if anything changes. And when Hiei and the others return, for that matter."

Without another word, the battlecruiser left. The moment the door shut behind her, the two men became all business.

"Right. Should I expect political drama, Daiki?" Blake asked, with a forlorn acceptance.

Takeda sighed, in turn, "Unfortunately, yes. I'll give you the details and we can plan our attack from there."

If the sharp smile directed his way was any indication, Takeda almost felt sorry for the Diet.

Almost.

Right, apologies. Underestimated how much Youtube+Subbing would take up energy, creative and otherwise. Working through it now, and trying to get back in the swing of things. It's a process. Hopefully summer will allow for more updates, too. >.>

*Lenea:* Meanwhile, I took the lead on this one. Was fun :V

In any event, we'll move forward from here. More changes compared to the original, among other things not dropping the 'Japanese government are being stubborn pricks' thing on Indy right away. Also more hinting at Seydlitz early. Hopefully won't take as long, for the next one.

On a battlecruiser of her power, it looked enough like anger to send a destroyer- was that Zubian?

Oooh, Zubian, they can be fun. And yes, I mean they, I headcanon her as having a split personality.

That and Tribals (the WW1 and WW2 class both) are adorable murder gremlins that should be unleashed upon unsuspecting foes. So they can sink, loot and otherwise inconvenience their foes to their hearts' contents

"No, we never went ashore at Narvik", she said with a German motorbike mysteriously on board (granted, that one was a WW2 Tribal, not one of Zubian's sisters)

Eh, threadmark?

Thanks for the chapter! Comparing and contrasting with the old version continues to be interesting.

Zubian cameo!

And good work on Irresistible and Implacable, they have much more distinct personalities now.

Now it's time for Commander Goto to re-appear... my anger is rising just seeing/typing his name due to the original one...

It would be fairly funny, if Indestructible had a "split" meme to her. She is walking with her sisters(all of them) and suddenly an anvil(Blame Akashi) falls on her head. Que spakles and suddenly she is in a miko outfit, mublings of "Dess" are reported to be heard. Proper state of mind was restored via percussive maintenance by repair ship Akashi.

To Prologue:

I'm really happy to see this being continued. Is Changing Destiny being continued too?
Or are you writing that as an actual book now? If so, where can I find it?

Yeah, canon Kongou would at least be half British and half Japanese. With her becoming more and more Japanese looking due to the refits but still retaining some British features.

So I'm guessing one of the Indestructible's fought one of the Hiei's? It was hinted at in the original but it's more clearly stated. I'd say the Hiei's and Indestructibles would be kind of cousins. The British side of the family and the Japanese side of the family with Indestructible/Kongou being the connection.

To Chapter 1 and some discussion around it:

Regarding @Korlan 's question regarding the Indestructible-class's main battery calibre, I'd suggest reusing much of the lore from the original Indestructible Spirit.

Namely the Indestructible-class upgunned to BL 15in, RN decides to keep them through the WNT with the Revenge-class scrapped to keep to tonnage limits.

Due to the increased total tonnage, the US and Japan were granted concessions in the form of being able to keep at least one (maybe two) of their new Battlecruisers, specifically Saratoga and Atago (in OG Indestructible Spirit). If Sky goes with 2 battlecruisers I'd suggest Constitution as the second "Saratoga-class" BC instead of United States, though maybe that'd step on New Ironsides's toes?

To chapter 2:

14in guns? That's odd, especially because the Indestructibles would be the only RN ships to use 14in guns.

Why did Yuudachi think Japan had/has no Battlecruisers when the Hiei's and others exist?
A fourth Hiei as a replacement for Kongou? I presume she's replacing the BC Atago?

Chapter 3 and other stuff:

Actually, I don't have much to say.

For her to be blonde-haired & blue-eyed implies something beyond design inspirations. I'm guessing she got captured at some point.

Perhaps ironically she was given to the British (or captured by the British) and kept as a replacement for Indestructible, they are very similar after all.

To chapter 4:

Ah yes, with modern cameras and screens I can see many modern warships (especially with the resurgent role/importance of naval gunfire in the Abyssal War) only using the "bridge" with windows as a secondary/navigation bridge while the true bridge/CIC is deep in the hull within the citadel, with screens connected to external cameras to allow vision alongside other sensors such as radar, sonar, etc

I do hope the Indy Meets Kongou omakes return.

Why did Yuudachi think Japan had/has no Battlecruisers when the Hiei's and others exist?
Historically, following the mid-late '30s refitting, the Kongous were redesignated as 'fast battleships' instead of battlecruisers. Assuming that still holds true - and that none of the Hiei-class sisters came back in pre-war configurations and stayed there - then Yuudachi would only know them as battleships, not as battlecruisers. Given that Fubuki doesn't say something like, "Just like Hiei and her sisters are," it seems likely to be the case here, particularly since when Yuudachi actually meets Ashitaka, she calls her a battleship.

Alternately, Yuudachi's just got a half-track brain:
"Yup," Mutsu just smiled again, with a rueful headshake for good measure. "Good luck, Yuudachi"

Waving at the battlecruiser,
Seeing as Mutsu is absolutely a battleship and not a battlecruiser.
