Where at in the 60's?
Well, here we are talking more about retrofuturism. I just had an idea for a kitsch series of pseudo-spy adventures (like James Bond - that is, martinis, tuxedos, and other gadgets .... and necessarily beautiful girls ... I will burn in hell for this). And since this genre, at least in cinema, was fruitful in the sixties, I decided that despite the fact that the action will be in the two thousand, I decided to add the sixties to this mix. First of all, in the socialist countries of Western Europe (yes - this world is "left") - this is a feeling of "brightness", frivolity, and so on. In the USSR too, but rather as a reference to the "Thaw" period (which excludes such a sharp freedom of morals, although leaves room for "Youth of the World"). I am thinking how I can implement such ideas. Although I have to admit I wanted to add a couple of references to heavy metal, but combining this will be difficult.

What would be the best/worst time in the 19th century for a 'war of the Russian succession' to break out?

'Best' as in best for the various peoples conquered by the Tsars can either make a break for independence or at least get a much needed breather from the russifying/colonising/genociding

'Worst' as in there will still likely be a Romanov on the throne when all is finished.

1812 before Napoleon's invasion? I can't imagine a worse time for a succession war to break out and then to get invaded aftewards.

Oh shit, you could have Paul survive his assassination attempt, of if you want to do it earlier maybe something emerges from Catherine the Great living longer, and her favoring Alexander of Paul, and you get a succession war from that. But other than maybe post Napoleonic chaos, which seems unlikely I don't see a good path for that kind of war.

What do you think I can do with this idea?

P.S. - I just thought that I need to take into account that different countries had different things?

If Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. had survived WWII and went into politics, what was the likelihood that he would have gained the presidency in 1960? Or would he have only made it into Congress?

According to AH.com, William G. Carleton (U-Florida professor and Joe Kennedy Sr.'s speechwriter) described Joe Jr. as being more extroverted and less bookish than JFK. He was also an antisemite who once expressed support for Hitler and reportedly more-or-less adhered to his father's own beliefs.

Probably a bit too recent, and probably wouldn't fundamentally change things; but for the popcorn value of imagining it: the Fracking Bill Liz Truss tried to turn into a three line confidence measure (complete with MP's being physically manhandled, Whips quoting and Truss being absent because she was sort of assaulting the Chief Whip) had somehow stayed a confidence motion and caused an election in late 2022?

is there any TL with actually good anarchist land?
it can range from stratocracies to actually good utopia's
recommend everything you know

Hello.

I have an idea and I would like to consult on one issue. The thing is, I want to write a piece, I want the world to feel like the "Sixties". Bring in the "Sixties Atmosphere". How could I achieve that?

(Not talking about political realities)
Spotify, and Hulu? The cultural milieu are easily accessible. Watch The Avengers, The Prisoner, and stream the Who, the Kinks, the Beatles, etc.

To be honest, I'm from Russia, and there are problems with Spotify there now (and I don't use paid services). I listen to all my music mainly through YouTube.
Well, by the way, maybe you're right - "The Avengers" is probably worth watching, like "The Man from U.N.C.L.E". Although I wonder if there were shows of a similar format in continental Europe?

Okay - I probably shouldn't have asked that, but then can I ask something else? The thing is, I came up with a detail for my world. The gist is this - historically, despite legal contraception, hormonal contraceptives reached the USSR very late, and the main means were condoms and abortions. It must be admitted that specifically in the USSR the quality of condoms was mediocre, but if we assume that we "improve" the USSR and turn the "Cold War" in its favor, then I have an idea that we can create conditions in which some countries will put more emphasis on condoms, and pills are less common. Does this make sense? Or does it sound too crazy?

I'm a little unclear on the question but Cascadia from 2020: Shots Fired/And Our Flag Was Not There is anarchist. Also individualist anarchism has a bit of a Renaissance* in one of my tls over on AH, eventually culminating in an Egoist Japan/Korea called the Uzumaki of the East Sea.

*Resulting in among other things the butterflying of top-down eugenics and legal abortion and euthanasia codified in the 1920s in the US and a Hunter S. Thompson presidency.

The King in Yellow and Other Stories: A President Lovecraft Weird Fiction Timeline in Several Acts

Act I- The King in Yellow: A President Lovecraft TLIAW Act II- A Wine-Dark Sea: An Atlantean Empire TLIAW Act III- Raise the Black Flag!: A Jersey Devil TLIAW Act IV- A Bolt From the Blue: A Vengeance Weapon TLIAW Act V- Illuminatus!: A Franco-British Union TLIAW Act VI- Invisible Amendments: An...
It started as a fairly restrained President Lovecraft TL but when I decided to turn it from a TLIAW into an interlocking sequence of TLIAWs the scope expanded drastically. There's quite a bit of supplemental detail in the comments as well.

Popping back on here after a bit to recommend four timelines for those on AH.com (my own summaries in italics):
  • The Center Cannot Hold: A History of the Second American Civil War (Sean McKnight) - as detailed as ever, and elaborates on a bunch of plot points that have been altered from his prior DeviantArt version. After a chaotic 2028 election, Donald Trump Jr. declares his secession from the United States, beginning a years-long civil war that pits the American federal government against Trumpism as a whole. Timeline has been completed, with a few retcons here and there.
  • .
Have you read this scenario that was made in response to that?https://www.deviantart.com/siryeehaw/art/The-Center-Can-Hold-Victory-for-America-962687917

There are likely much to say about the timeline itself but reading the comments where the author answers, he's one to deny the bigotry of the GOP by basically saying that since anti-discrimination laws are still on the books it's not going to be an issue and defends stuff like DeSantis' don't say gay bill and banning drag "shows" for children.
Plus he resorts to insult and treats criticisms as attacks while projecting his critics as the ones feeling threatened.
The post attracts noticable sympathy from explicitely anti-LGBT types with no pushback from the author.

Edit: As far as I'm concerned, both scenarios have a lot of issues due to their authors' ideologies prevailing.
Edit 2: Turns out someone already posted it on SV in the cringe thread What's the most Cringeworthy Alternate History you've ever read? Post-1900

  • The Consequences of Trivial Causes: a Timeline of the Second American Civil War (AkhenatenOrRamses) - a somewhat unique take on a 2ACW, different enough from TCCH to make it interesting in its own right, Enraged by a narrow defeat in the 2024 election, Donald Trump and his allies declare an America of their own. The resulting conflict spans several years, and sees the nation grapple over Trumpism and its aftermath.
Having read both of these the one thing that strikes me is how leftists are either invisible or annoying idiots who don't understand how a state works or must be run, especially in YNot's scenario where their only notable appearance is when they ally with the far-right to cause the food riots. I don't think I need to explain how that last point is mindnumbingly stupid.
There is no rise of leftism of any kind, only liberal dominance, despite the disapearance of a major player like the GOP and the shift of the overton window leftwards. There is no left militias or groups of international volunteers, only idiots who love to badly criticize the Dem government indefinitely. It reminds me of the way Occupy Wall Street activists are treated with paternalist disdain by liberals in that one West Wing episode.

YNot is a genuine lunatic. He has a reddit and its nothing but bloodcurdling levels of screeching for human carnage in service of American hegemony, he just attaches Obama era social liberalism to a level of jingoistic bloodlust that would make Dick Cheney blanch. I am rarely actually horrified by "political" opinions anymore, i've seen every type of internet neonazi its all very lame. YNot frightens me. This is a man who ernestly pines for the deaths of millions so he can have his utopia, and his utopia is an ocean of consumers watching CalArts animation and eating literal pondscum and liking it.

One has to credit him with originality though. I don't think I've ever heard of anyone else with such a uniquely deranged philosophy of life.

To be honest, this is pretty much how my friend imagines the scriptwriters of "Rings of Power" - with the difference that in his case they are fans of De Sade.... long story.

Recently I've been pondering a possible redux and continuation of Harry Turtledove's Timeline-191 Southern Victory series. That explores the massive cultural shift the United States experienced following the War of Seccession and the Second Mexican-American War. Considering so much had changed that Turtledove didn't really explore. Be it the freed blacks who helped build America's railroads or the Southerners who went out west following the Civil War to the historicaal/cultural ties to Britain and France that led to the Western alliance block it was all butterflied away.

Of course it would be a slightly more dystopic timeline considering everything that happened in TL-191 even before the Great War.
