Aincrad Adventure (SAO, SI Fic) - Rewrite [DEAD]

@Mizu
The reason why Argo charged Kirito a huge sum for this quest is because she was embarrassed about the information(her whiskers). Not because she is a cold and calculating merchant. I know hyperinflation is a thing in MMOs but you can safely ignore this when writing unless you want to explore the economics of MMOs.
It helps you to inform the readers of the value of something without being bogged down explaining it.
Ah. That makes a bit more sense. I can rewrite that to show Argo getting all embarrassed over the "how do you know that place" question, or just setting a giant price for the info as a "not wanting to tell" method.

Also Argo is not a callous person. She wouldn't "sell" PKers info on their victims or "sell" creepy people info on where Asuna or Silica lives. She would set an absurdly high price of 100 billion col as her way of saying "no" for the sake of her reputation . I feel the part about Argo boasting that she can sell where Mizu's location to Kibaou is too menacing for her.
That can be changed easily enough. Point out to me what bit is "boasting" and I can rewrite it if I feel it's needed. The "I've been asked 19 times already" bit was moreso for "stop asking already!" than "I've told 19 people", if that was the area you meant.

You could have Mojo be irritated by the "bahhing" and have a herd of goats interrupt? Or have them sneak past a herd?
Heh. That idea appeals to me. Might whip something up regarding that.

You could have Red doing her stress relief activity (carving) and slowly ramp up the tension? You probably shouldn't change POV too much in a chapter.
So have Red carve objects while they're making their way to the location, or have scenes of her doing it when Mojo enforces stuff like food and rest breaks? That can work.

For the fast mobs, how would an average player survive a bad encounter? Unless you mean Kayaba plans to kill all the unlucky players on the second floor?
The guy's mad, but he wants players to have a chance :)

The average player wouldn't be able to flee those fast mobs till they've got a really high dash skill, but they could take them down if it's a one-on-one fight and they're a bit higher in level or skill rank than the general floor level. Say having combat skills in the 150's range compared to floor average of 130.

Group fights VS those things would be preferable, and if a solo player got more than one attacking him at once, he or she isn't going to survive at this time. They're super easy compared to stuff on floor five, for comparison, so it's only while players are just getting from floor one to two that they're a challenge.
It's a beefgate area at present, where tough mobs lurk to stop easy progress, but by no means are they invincible.

That area was mainly mentioned to show the fact being able to run forever isn't necessarily a "flee-any-mob 100%" skill. The plains are also not something a player aiming for the tower directly would stumble across - they're a side-area that's almost in the opposite direction from the tower to the next floor.

EDIT:
I don't know why, but this showed up as blue link text on first post. Odd.

EDIT2:
Ah, I see. I accidentally quoted yourself and a call to myself. Edited to hopeful fix.

I bring the finished artwork of my SI from when he first joins the world of SAO. Think I'll be getting my cousin to do Red next.
Spoilered for ease of loading the page.

The length and shape of the limbs, the neck and head especially. Also the skinniness.
I don't see the resemblance myself, but I'm not the artist. It's possible my cousin drew some inspiration or her artstyle is similar to that character.

I'm thinking of making a TvTropes page for this fic. Everyone fine with that? I've only noticed tropes for the first few chapters, though.
Well, and my current one, but that hasn't been posted yet.

+ the 20k hush money
Sounds like a blackmailer.
I feel that most of Argo's profits come from info that needs to be collated, like drop tables and exp/time for areas. Information that is hard to get solo. She also sells info on what is the best loot for the floor so that frontliner have a standard to match their gear to. Of course a certain amount of reliable gossip is sold. Something like if a player is still single or where to get some custom "accessories" made.

For the plains mob I assume you mean not outrunning in a straight line right? A person could hypothetically be able to zig zag into a forest right?

So lower the price here? Have Red and Mojo offer money but Argo refuses on principle?

Yeah, that view makes sense. *adds it to character notes*
Should I change anything here, or is something a problem?

Zig-zagging works in confusing the pathfinder, so you can use that tactic to trick the AI enough for escaping. Straight-line dashing, what the average panicked person would do...that won't work.

You know, the upside of all this discussion is I'm having to think on vague plot elements and plan stuff out more solidly. Yay?

You guys can expect the next chapter sometime over the next two-three days. I'm wanting to keep to my "every 2 weeks" schedule, and have managed it so far :)

The chapter has been written for the most part - I'm mainly fixing up any errors and adding short scenes to explain something clearer (eg; what happened to Mizu's whiskers once his friends find him; why Argo charged so high for finding Mizu).

This...wasn't what I expected as a disguise method

I woke to a situation I didn't really expect considering my last memories.

Last I knew, I'd finally achieved victory against the Devil Rock and obtained the <<Martial Arts>> skill. Right after that, my memory cuts off, so I guessed I'd fainted.

Huh. That was a new experience for me. I'll add it to the mental wall, along with "getting trapped in a death game", "kidnapped by a ROB" and "touching a girl's breasts".

Right now, I could feel my head on some soft substance - a blanket or pillow? - and I appeared to be inside somewhere. I couldn't feel the wind or grass under me, anyway.

I open my eyes to discover a face a few centimeters away from me.

"Wha?!" I cry out, surprised at the sudden sight.

"He's awake!" I hear someone cry, before Red appears before me. Was the face Mojo? I couldn't tell, it was too close to me.

Red appeared to have been crying earlier, and I could see the remains of tears on her face. This wasn't her current mood, though.

This was her "I'm pissed at YOU!" mood.

"Uhh...hiya Red?" I say, trying to probe the situation. It doesn't really work.

"Do you have any idea how worried we were about you?! First you run off into the mountains once we beat the boss, then we can't contact you after that. We had to track down Argo to even know where you were - and that cost us most of our cash - and on the way there, we see you almost die! What the heck were you thinking?!"

Red's pissed. Very, very pissed.

"Umm...that I didn't want to get killed by Kibaou and his cronies? Least, that was my logic at first. Then I got it into my head to explore the tallest mountain here, and began the <<Martial Arts>> quest. I spent three sleepless days and nights facing my foe, but finally the Devil Rock is defeated!"

I have the feeling I didn't need to explain the last bit. Particularly the upwards arm thrust I make as I mention the Devil Rock's loss. Stupid rock.

Red still seems angry.

"And the sudden HP loss on Day 34 at around 3PM? What caused that?"

"Uhh...me trying to leap off the side of this crater and impact the rock with my fists. I missed my landing spot and face-planted instead."

This isn't something that makes Red happier.

"Of all the stupid...Fool!" She cries, punching me in the face as she does so. I gain a new bump on my head from that.

"Darn it, Red! Don't hit me!" I cry, angry at the blow.

"Well, when you do stupid things I think I'm well within my rights to do so!" She yells back.

"What? That makes no sense! Scolding me, maybe, but hitting me for doing stupid stuff will only make me angry at you!"

Mojo intercedes in our shouting match by getting between us, pushing Red away from my bed.

"Now, now. The important bit is that Mizu is fine now, right? You can yell at him later on if you're still mad Red, but for now I think we should all calm down a bit."

Red simmers angrily before stomping outside. I hear a *THWACK* noise several seconds after her exit.

"...Maybe she'll be calmer tomorrow?" I say to Mojo with a hopeful look on my face.

------------------------

The next day Red had calmed down more. I had looked about a bit last afternoon, finding us to be inside the NPC martial artist's home. Apparently Red had commandeered his bed for me, and the NPC had just stood there, its routines seemingly unsure what to do in this situation.

I couldn't blame it. God knows no programmer would add a routine for "if someone steals this NPC's bed" to it's behavior library. It's just too unexpected.

Mojo had me just stay in bed and rest some more. He claimed I was suffering from sleep deprivation and taking a nap was the best solution for it. So that's what I did till the next day arrived.

When I had woken up again Red had apologized to me. Apparently she was just really worried about me, and had accepted since then punching me was a bad idea.

Anyway, I got out of bed and we exited the NPC's home, sitting on the grassy area near where the hated Devil Rock once was.

"I still can't believe you spent three days without sleep pounding that thing..." Mojo says to me, shaking his head as he did so.

That rock was evil! Evil, I tell you!

...I might have gone a bit overboard in my determination to reduce it to rubble, in hindsight.

"Heh, yeah. Sometimes you can just focus on one thing to the exclusion of all else, ya know? It generally happens for me and books. First time with a rock, although the fact it was taking ages might have something to do with it. I got...really frustrated."

"Well...be that as it may, we now have to deal with Kibaou and his group looking for you. They hadn't given up last we saw of them, and had been asking around for where you might be. Apparently they had asked Argo quite a number of times."

Ugh, Kibaou.

"Bother. He hasn't cooled his head yet, then? I was hoping he would have calmed down and recovered his pride by now."

"Nope. On the upside, most other players seem to think he's a fool and are actively avoiding him. I don't think he'll get many to listen to him anymore, thanks to you and Agil." Said Red happily.

Well, nice to know I've discredited the guy. He was a jerk in canon as well, as far as I recall. Least now he probably won't be mucking with anyone else and ending up commanding a guild to their doom or something. Now if only he left me alone as well.

"So...what now? Do I just stay here, in this little mountain area, until Kibaou has cooled his jets some more? Do you think he'll try and attack me again if he sees me?" I pose a question to my friends, hoping the answer is "no".

"He's still pissed. Him and his followers are looking for you, as we said, and he doesn't seem likely to stop any time soon. I suspect they've got an echo chamber or feedback loop going." Mojo gives his opinion.

What? What's that? Red asks for me.

"Feedback loop? Echo chamber?"

"Yeah. What I mean by that is that Kibaou says something bad about you, his cronies agree with him and thus reaffirm his opinion on something. The echo chamber, see. Feedback loop's just another name for it." Mojo answered.

Huh. There goes my belief the guy had found some new game mechanic.

"So, because of that your chance of coming down from here are slim to none if you were hoping not to get attacked. Least, in your current form."

That doesn't sound good.

"What do you mean? I like my current form, I'm rather attached to it."

Red giggles at my bad pun.

"What we mean by that, Mizu, is that we got a way to disguise you out of Argo as well as where you were from. Apparently she gave it to us for free as thanks for you helping her with the guide."

Oh yay. Helping her out paid off in more ways than just having a beta copy of the player guide. Good to know.

"So? What's this disguise?" I ask them.

"We don't know. It's in some temple in the mountains about here, with Argo only having rumors from the NPC to go on. Apparently it wasn't in the beta, either." Red replied to me, sounding curious herself.

"Hmm...wonder what it could be. Some sort of features-altering cloak or invisibility ring, maybe?" I theorize out loud.

"Maybe. Whatever the case, all we know is the location is somewhere about here and that it will help disguise you from Kibaou." Mojo answered me, before standing up.

"Well, let's get going!" He said, walking towards the entrance to the crater we were in. Me and Red stood and followed him.

------------------------

A few days later

"And you and Red saw a dragon? Really?" I say, blocking a charge from a <<Hopping Goat>> with my hands as I did so. Cue my newest move, an arm thrust called Force Palm. This attack shattered the goat, dropping it's HP down to zero near-instantly.

"Still amazed by how strong that <<Martial Arts>> skill you have is..." Red says to me, seemingly jealous.

"Bah. You try smashing a rock with 50k durability for 3 days straight to get it. It wasn't fun, I tell you! Not to mention these whisker marks..." I pull on my cheeks as I say that, gesturing.

"Stop looking like a pufferfish. We're almost there!" Said Mojo in irritation, startling me and Red.

"Anyway, as I've told Red repeatedly, it wasn't a dragon. It was a pterodactyl." Mojo corrects me.

"It could breathe fire, had razor-sharp teeth and was big enough to swallow me whole! I say dragon!" Red shouts back at him angrily.

"Not again..." Mojo mutters quietly.

"OK, fine. We'll say it's a dragon. Just drop the topic and climb already!" He yelled at Red, before pulling himself up the ledge he was on.

We'd been exploring the mountains for three days now, and I'd been leveling my <<Martial Arts>> all the while. I thanked the game for those skill animations, else I'd be finding it quite difficult to pull off these melee blows I was doing. On the upside, my infinite stamina meant leveling the skill went pretty quickly.

<<Martial Arts>> was, as the name suggests, an unarmed combat skill. It seemed to involve throwing punches and kicks at foes in various ways, and I currently had three moves unlocked due to my learning it. I imagined that, like my dagger skills, I'd gain more every 100 or so ranks.

My current moves were a quick open-handed thrust called Force Palm, a finger strike move that involved me poking a foe with a rigid outstretched finger called Embracer and a quick punch called Flash Hit. That wasn't including the punches and kicks a person can do normally, of course.

I'd gotten 70 points in the skill just from unlocking it – it seemed that pounding that rock till it broke gave exp when you finally got the darn skill. I swapped out my <<One-Handed Dagger>> to equip it. That skill was at 130, it'd be fine swapping for a while.

It hadn't gained more than 5 more points since then, sadly. I suspect grinding it would be a slow task.

Shutting up, me and Red followed Mojo up the ledge and into a new section of the mountain. This mountain was two over from my martial arts one, and we'd battled our way here through legions of those <<Hopper Goat>> mobs. I swear nothing else lives on these mountains...

As we cleared the ledge, we saw a crack in the ground in front of us. Through it, we could see a temple far below.

"Well, that's no good. We find the place and can't reach it." I complain.

"And this is why I brought rope before we left, Red." Said Mojo happily.

Oh fun, we were going whatever climbing down a cliff using rope was called. Rappelling?

"Bah. If I hadn't woken you up, we wouldn't have left till midday!" Was her response, along with a poke of her tongue in his direction.

Mojo then proceeded to tie the rope to a nearby boulder, before tossing it into the crack in the rock.

"Well, down we go. See ya at the bottom!" He says, waving and jumping into the crack.

"Mojo!" Red cried, rushing over to see if he was OK.

He was fine, slowly climbing down the cliff while holding onto the rope. He waved at Red when he noticed her looking.

"It's fine! Come on already!" He cried.

We followed him, albeit somewhat reluctantly for me. I'm never fond of heights...

------------------------

The cave was rather dark at the bottom, light shining in at a steep angle from the crack we came from. The temple was directly ahead of us, a few metres from where the rope ended.

The building was made of a white, strangely reflective substance that shined brightly in the light from above. Standing at certain angles was enough to blind you, as I found out.

"Gah! Too bright!" I cry when I'm a few metres from the ground, accidentally letting go of the rope to shield my eyes. Cue dropping to the floor below in a heap.

"Oww..." was my response to that, causing Red to let out a giggle of amusement.

"Should I have mentioned the bright light?" Mojo says innocently.

They're taunting me, I just know it...

I stand up and stalk past the two of them, heading towards what seemed to be a door.

This temple, in addition to being made of shiny stuff that can blind you, was also built in a triangular shape, with a flat bottom and four corners coming to a point high above us. It had an archway at the bottom, where we were. Don't Pyramids look similar to this?

Red ran up to me and began trailing behind my feet, while Mojo walked slowly in our direction.

------------------------

I was once more the scout of the team, using my <<Searching>> to see enemies from far off in the distance. It didn't help with seeing in near-pitch darkness, sadly enough.

"Ow! Watch for this bit, there's something coming from the ceiling here. And it's hard to boot..." I say, rubbing my head where I'd walked into it.

A cheerful "Got it!" and a grunt were my responses from Red and Mojo, respectively.

We'd been in this place for a while now, maybe 20 minutes. No little icon had shown up with it's name when we entered, so it was possible the game didn't consider it a field dungeon. On the upside, that also meant we hadn't encountered any mobs since entering.

I was walking a bit further ahead of the others, with Red in grabbing distance in case I needed to move quickly away from a trap or something. We'd found a few of those, to our displeasure.

So far, this place seemed to like springing traps on people. Spike-walls, a giant boulder, hidden dart shooters...we'd found quite a few. And in the case of the darts, got poisoned from them.

I was glad I'd had a few antidote potions left when that happened...

I came to a split in the path, and looked back at the others.

"Which way should we go?" I ask them.

Cue the traditional method of decision making – rock-paper-scissors.
Red won that competition, so we ended up going to the left, with me leading the way once more.

Right as I stepped onto the left path, the floor gave out under me.

"Oh crap!" I cried, pinwheeling madly to stop myself falling in. Red grabbed at my shirt to assist me.

Sadly, that did the opposite of assist, and her additional weight on me caused me to tip forwards into the pit, with her coming for the ride.

"Mojo!" Red cried, clutching my back as we plummeted out of sight.

I believe I've found the trick with the BB Code Editor. I can paste my writing in without the spacing tripling, which is nice. It also removes all formatting, which isn't as nice.
Gotta remember to add the little code bits for future chapters, like for bold text and whatever the one for centred text is.

This chapter's longer, by the way. Just splitting it in a bunch for easy posting.

Part two here we go!
0----------------0

Me and Red had fallen quite quickly, the rectangle of light containing Mojo's form shrinking rapidly into invisibility. I think deliriously as I fall that these sort of bottomless pit traps can't actually exist in reality, and curse my luck in falling into one in a videogame world.

Red was screaming in fear in my ear as I was doing that, giving me quite the headache.

Then I saw light – a glowing square that was rapidly getting bigger as we approached it.

"Oh look, there's the floor..." Was my first thought.

Then panic set in, as I recalled our drop height and did some quick math about it. We definitely wouldn't survive that, even with a water landing.

I joined Red in screaming in panic.

We fell closer to the point of the light and seemed to be slowing down as we did. Sadly, not fast enough to stop the impact.

*THUMP* was the sound I made as I did yet another faceplant with the floor, Red landing on my back and knocking the air out of what remained of my lungs after impact.

We'd survived, but only due to that motion-slowing light.

A bit of coughing and trying to speak later, I'd peeled myself from the floor and managed to stand up again, on legs that shook like a leaf.

"Why do I keep getting into dangerous situations? Is my luck that bad? Is there some evil god out there that delights in my torment? WHY?"

After a bit of complaining at the ceiling, I glance around for Red. She was lying on the floor as I had been, moaning a bit. She'd also curled into a ball shape, for some reason.

"You OK, Red?" I ask her, jogging over to her position a few metres from me. I'd acted as a cushion for her, so she shouldn't be too badly hurt...

I couldn't say the same, my HP flashing it's crimson light at me once more in the corner of my eye.

My luck sucks.

She sniffles a bit, before uncurling and grabbing me.

"That was horrible..." she bawls, tears shining in her eyes.

"It certainly sucked, but we survived it. That's the important part. Think Mojo can get to us?" I attempt to take her mind off the issue of the close shave we'd just gone through.

She blinked at me before looking up at the ceiling.

"I...don't think so, unless he wants to follow our example. I'll try giving him a PM to explain what happened. At least he knows we survived..." Red says, looking at where our party stats would be in her sight.

She then taps at her menu for a bit, presumably composing a message for Mojo as she does so. I take the time to poke around the area and see where we landed.

There were some interesting symbols on the walls around us, which shined with a bright white glow. Our landing spot was a patch of darkness in that, made of something besides the shining rock and not seeming to reflect any light whatsoever.

I examine the symbols a bit, and have no luck in decoding what they are beyond the fact it isn't in English. Or Japanese, for that matter – while I couldn't read that language I could recognize at least one of the three alphabet equivalents it had (Kanji, Katakana and Hiragana; Romanjii was Japanese words using the Latin alphabet, for comparison).

There was a particularly concentrated bunch around some mirror-like object in the middle of a wall, so I presumed it was important.

I was careful not to touch or look directly at it – who knows what could happen.

"What's this?" Red said, walking up behind me. I grab her and stopped her directly looking in the mirror.

"I don't know, but I've read enough media to know anything with lots of mystery writing around it can be dangerous. Or just something suspicious-looking enough, really. And that mirror set into the wall definitely counts."

She wriggled a bit, tearing free of my grip.

"I'm sure we'll be fine. It's a game – nothing life-threatening can come from a mirror, Mizu!"

So said, she walks around me and attempts to look at the mirror cleanly.

"Blast it Red! Don't ignore my warnings!" I cry, trying to grab her again and pull her away. Did she forget the dart-walls from earlier? You'd think nothing life threatening can come from a wall before meeting those things...

She avoids my attempts and peers at the writing around the wall curiously.

لمن يمس هذه المرآة يجب أن لعن في شكل معارضة لهم، محاصرين حتى يتم الانتهاء من طقوس العشي.

"What do you think this is, Mizu?" She asks me, turning and looking back at me as she does so.

Right, she stared directly at the mirror. Seems you can do that without problems, at least. Let's presume it's touching it, then.

"I have no idea. It doesn't match English or Japanese in writing, and I know we can make artificial alphabets nowadays to boot. It could be anything, even some tongue made specifically for this game."

Red pouts at that little bit of news, seemingly disappointed.

She wanders back towards me, away from the mirror, making me breathe a sigh of relief.

"Let's...let's just stay away from it, OK? It probably inflicts a status effect, or instakills whoever touches it. God knows what Kayaba rigged it to do..." I say, really not wanting to touch it. Or be near it.

Suddenly, we feel a rumble in the floor under our feet, causing us to stumble a bit.

"Whoa!" I cry, pinwheeling forwards and into the mirror, despite my best efforts not to. Red trips and bangs her head on the floor nearby.

A white flash obscures my vision, before everything goes dark.

------------------------

A few minutes later, I hear voices. They sound like they're far off and speaking quietly, for some reason.

"So he was like that after touching the mirror?"

Ah, right. I had touched that mirror, hadn't I? All I can see is black and my HUD. Seem to have gained a new icon though – a pulsing purple figure.

"Yeah! I don't know what happened. We stumbled a bit when you caused the floor to rumble, and he fell against it. Then there was a bright light and he was like that."

That light might be what rendered me blind. Some kind of darkness status effect? Let's take a look...

Yeah, I think I see a little crossed out eye icon there, next to the glowing person. There's a little ear with a plug in it as well, so my hearing might also be affected.

"...I can't read this. I'll trace them so we've got a record, but I suspect our only option is hoping he got a quest guide or something from this. That or finding someone who can understand this stuff..."

"That sucks. I wonder what he'll think when he wakes up?"

Not asleep, darn it! Let's try moving...

And nothing. Oh wait, there's a paralyze icon there as well. How'd I miss that? Man, that mirror sure inflicted a lot of status effects on me...

"No doubt be horribly confused, as well as pissed he touched the mirror. He was warning you off it quite a lot, after all. He probably recalled stories involving cursed items and guessed this would be similar."

"Hmm...you're probably right. Least Kibaou and his cronies can't recognize him now..."

Points to me for whatever happened changing my appearance. Sadly, as I can't move - or see or hear – this kinda renders the advantages null. Hope this will wear off soon...

Hours later

Still Paralyzed. And blinded. On the upside, that hearing issue has worn off, so I can hear properly now.

If only I could still move – this is darn uncomfy!

Up and down, up and down. Each step whoever was carrying me did caused me to get jostled against them, bumping against their collarbone each time. It wasn't particularly pleasant, as sensations go.

"Think he's awake?" I hear from in front of me.

Think that's Red's voice. So that would make it Mojo carrying me?

"Could be. He hasn't made a sound since we found him, though." Was the reply from my ride.

Yep, that voice was Mojo's. What was he carrying me on – his shield? Gah, the banging was unpleasant.

"Yeah, that bit is kinda concerning." Red said back, with a hint of worry in her voice.

If you two checked your darn HUD screens, you would see I'm paralyzed. Check it already!

"We're almost there. Let's just get him inside and then wait for him to wake." The second voice said. They sped up to boot, making me rock more.

Oh joy. Now I get to experience being jostled faster.

-----------------------------

Day 43 – 6 AM

The ride wherever we were going, a town apparently, was rather unpleasant; slung over Mojo's back like a sack as I was.

My HUD said it was around 6 AM, so we had the upside of basically no one being awake.
Or at least, I couldn't hear anyone but Red and Mojo in the general area.

Anyway, once we got into town – a place called Urbus, according to my HUD - Red split off from Mojo to go somewhere else and Mojo carried me off into a building. I could only tell that as the ground sounds swapped from stone to wood.

The next sound I heard was the thump of something hitting a hard surface, then experiencing the new bumps of stairs.

It wasn't an improvement over walking bumps.

Once those had ended, I heard a door opening and felt Mojo grabbing me off his back. I think I felt something around my neck area as he swung me about, but wasn't sure.

He placed my motionless body on what felt like a bed – so I'm at an inn? - and then moved off somewhere else.

I couldn't hear anything for a while after that, so opted to try and sleep the time away. It was only 6:13 AM – I should be able to do that easily enough.

-----------------------------

I woke on a mattress. I could feel blankets wrapped around me and a pillow under my head.

Attempts to open my eyes only resulted in stinging and bright light, so I kept them closed a bit longer. On the upside, the fact I could see light in the first place meant the blindness and paralysis had worn off. Yay~

I can hear noises from somewhere, so there's probably a window open in this room. I recall that while inn rooms are by default silent, you can hear stuff from outside if you have a door or window open. The same is true in reverse, explaining why I didn't manage to wake Red or Mojo a while ago.

I hear a door open and footsteps come closer to me. A weight sits on the bed near me.

"You awake, Mizu?" I hear Red say quietly.

"Yeah, I'm awake. What happened?" I reply, then stop.

Why was my voice sounding like that? It was higher in timbre and pitch than before. Did I accidentally inhale helium somehow? Could that even affect this game avatar, for that matter?

"You..ended up touching the mirror. When the floor shook under us you stumbled into it, and I knocked my head on the floor. There was a bright flash of light and then you collapsed."

"That floor shaking was caused by Mojo, who had found his way to us. Turns out we were in an underground container and hitting a switch raised it up. It also caused the shaking as it was moved."

I nod in understanding, in the direction I think Red's voice is coming from. Darn eyes, get better already!

"Mojo found you and took down some traces of the symbols on the wall, before we carried you back to Urbus."
I knew where I was from seeing it show on my HUD, but nice of them to tell me regardless.
Those wall tracings should be pretty useful, though...

"Why Urbus? Wouldn't somewhere else be better for hiding from Kibaou?" I ask Red, still bugged by the voice change. I'm not used to it being that high, darn it!

"Uhh...I'm pretty sure he won't be finding you for a while." Red answered evasively.

"Red…" I growl, not wanting her to avoid the topic. "What did the mirror do to me? Out with it, already!"

I can hear Red shifting about on the bed - is she nervous?

"Uhh...well...it appears that...themirrorturnedyoufemale" She says all in a rush, leaving me to try and separate the words from each other.

A few seconds later, I do. My eyes burst open. The stinging was gone now, which was a nice discovery.

"Wait, what? I'm a girl now?!" I cry, before noticing a few differences now I'm sitting up.

For starters, I've gained breasts. They're not the largest things, thankfully, so I don't have ones the size of a blimp or hugely exaggerated ones for an anime character of 16 or something. They're not flat, but not giant either.

I'm not a judge on size and vaguely recall the classifications aren't too helpful anyway. I never really paid attention, as it didn't affect me, despite having two sisters.

A quick check of the groin area reveals that bit's changed as well, although Red blushed a bit when I did that.

"Did you need to do that?" She asks me, once I've placed the blankets back on me.

"Maybe? For all I know, I could have been a mix of genders - a guy with breasts. That'd be weirder than just being female, so I wanted to be certain."

Red still seems embarrassed, but looks like she can understand my reasoning.

"As it were, I think you're about the same size as me" She comments, when I'm looking at her again. "That's why you're currently wearing one of my bra's."

Huh. Wonder who changed me?

Red blushes some more when I ask, and mutters quietly that she did. Well, suppose it makes sense for a girl to dress another girl - and that's what I am now, in body if not in mind.

Wonder if my sexuality will change from this? I've never cared much for either gender in that manner, so it could be unaffected. Of course, I define "I" as me mentally - my body always reacted to girls...

Ah, screw it. I'm not looking for a relationship now anyway, so it's not like it matters.

"So, what else has changed with me? Beyond the new parts and voice?" I ask Red. How's my voice changed anyway - is the game synthesizing a voice for me based on an approximation of what I'd be like female? How would it even do that - replace my voice sounds as I make them?

I suppose it could be possible - computer information transfer can be faster than nerve signals in some ways…

Red brings out a hand mirror from her inventory - is that the same one we got from the RL appearance change at the beginning of the death game?

"Hey, Red." I ask before she angles it at me. After an inquisitive look from her, I continue.

"Is that the same mirror from the body change on the first day?" I'm curious, and wondering why if she kept it. Most would destroy it due to bad memories.

Red nods at this.

"Yep, I figured it could be handy for something." Fair enough reason. She evidently didn't emotionally connect it with the death game, either.

Red resumed showing me my new appearance.

My facial features seemed mostly unchanged...maybe a bit softer in bone structure. Didn't girls have less pointed faces than guys?

My hair had retained it's brown shade, although it had grown a fair bit from my general haircut of "short enough to be near a buzzcut".
It was now long enough to be reaching my waist, and pooled around me as I sat up.

I'd gained a slight fringe as well, with the hair reaching just above my eyes. Not enough to obscure my sight, thankfully.

My skin remained the same as ever, lacking in pimples and other facial conditions. I'm kinda glad Kayaba didn't simulate that.

"Well, this is going to be annoying. I never liked the idea of long hair, and now I've got to get used to it." I complain, before continuing my analysis.

"That said, it could be worse. I'm someone who most could call reasonably attractive, it seems, so the mirror change didn't make me ugly as well."

"I can see why you guys think I won't be found by Kibaou. As far as anyone knows, there's no way to change gender - or look similar enough for it to count on first glance. The fact I have, while concerning, does make a good disguise."

Red nods at this, seemingly pleased I'm not angry and shouting. Don't know why she'd think that - I know she didn't cause me to touch the mirror, me losing my balance did. And the earthquake.

"So, now I've changed to a girl, anything I should know about it? Bodily issues compared to being male, how people interact with girls vs guys, that sort of thing? I've heard gaming culture isn't as kind to woman…" I ask Red a few questions rapidly, wanting to get up to speed.

Red seems surprised for a second, before she puts a hand on her chin and looks to be thinking.

"Uhh...well, there's the plus of there being no period while we're trapped here. Mine was never too bad, mild cramps only, but it's still nice."

This is both squicky and surprising. Wasn't aware she trusted me enough to tell me this stuff. Is it because I'm female now? Certain things you just feel more comfy discussing with one of the same gender, after all. Even if I probably don't count mentally (presuming gender is also mental and not just a physical phenomena).

My thoughts can go to weird places sometimes.

"You don't experience a period? While I'm grateful I get to skip that part of being female, it's still surprising. Considering how much other stuff this game simulates, you'd think Kayaba would do that as well." I show my surprise on the matter to Red.

"Maybe it was due to the NerveGear scanner not being able to pick up when it happens? It's not something that happens in the head, after all...unless it is? I don't actually know if the brain triggers it or not, to be honest…" Red posits a theory.

Sounds reasonable. I nod and we move on.

"Regarding how people treat girls...if you're attractive, you get glances from guys checking you out occasionally. A few people here have also randomly asked me for things like "showing my tits" or stuff like that, although it's rather uncommon. Most people nowadays have kinda moved on from that viewpoint." Red explains.

Huh. There's a point in this universe's favour - my world was still stuck in misogyny towards girls who were gamers, and a bit in general as well. It was better than 20 years ago, apparently, but it seemed like there were still a fair number of sexist people about. Nice to hear that isn't as common here, although it being gone entirely would have been the best option.

"People are also generally rather polite to you, letting you go first through doors and stuff. Sometimes while I've been shopping a random person has helped me find what I'm after, just because I'm a girl and looked confused." Red sounds happy at that. Can't blame her, that kind of thing is pretty nice to do for someone.

"I think the most difficult bits for you now would be how to behave like a girl, Mizu. We'll probably want to change your name as well, if we're hiding you from Kibaou." Red finishes her explanation and adds a good point to it.

You could change your username at a church, just by paying a fee of gold. I'd heard a number of people did that in the first few weeks, to get rid of embarrassing or hard to say names.

Hmm...what name could I use instead? I generally used Azure if I was using a female character, but is that too close to my male name? I suppose people wouldn't connect it to my male form, what with the change in hairstyle and gender.
Particularly if I dye my hair. It's remarkable how much people associate one another with their hair style and colour.

I pulled back the blankets and hopped out of bed, trying to stand up with my changed body. I found compensating for the new weight on my chest a bit of a struggle for a second, swaying till I found a balance. I'd imagine that would have been harder if I had larger breasts…

I then notice I appear to be clad only in underclothing. Huh. Didn't really expect that.

Right after I notice that, Mojo walks in through the door. His eyes widen a bit when he spots me.

"Uhh...I'm just going to turn about now~" He says, spinning about and going back the way he came. "I'll come back when he's clothed. Get him to do that, would you Red?"

Red's blushing terribly from all this. I'm a bit embarrassed too - I always found it awkward meeting people when not wearing much.

"Let's...let's get you dressed first, Mizu." Red says, dragging me back to the bed.

"What's wrong with my own clothes?" I ask her, before poking about in my inventory to find them.

"They'll identify you as...well, you. I got you some new stuff." Red said to me. I didn't find my gear in my inventory, but asking Red just revealed she was keeping it at present.

"Good point, I guess. What stuff did you get me? I don't particularly want to wear a dress…" I warn.

Red spawns a pair of pants and a shirt for me, both in a shade of light blue, as an answer.

"Well OK then. This works." I say, grabbing them and pulling them on. It's interesting how SAO manages wearing gear - you can either put it on like in reality or "right-click" it from inventory or where it is in the world to wear it. That was how they changed my clothes earlier, I'd imagine. Just pulled them right off me.

You could commit item stealing like that – see a nice piece of gear you want? Nick it off someone while they're sleeping or otherwise unable to stop you in some way.

"So why do girls need bra's in this VR world, ya reckon? I ask Red as I shrug on my new shirt. She just gives me a shrug as reply.

"Why not?"

"Well, we're all essentially wireframe models that move according to our brain's commands, so things like breast bouncing shouldn't be an issue unless it's animated. These...do bounce and such, right? They aren't just extra lumps of polygons on your chest, but act like breasts do in reality?" I cup my breasts as I say that, curious to see if I get sensations from them. I wouldn't have the nerve clusters in my brain for it, I'd think.

Well, I feel something from them. Not quite sure whether it was the same sensation I'd get cupping my breasts as a male, though. They felt somewhat sensitive, and squeezing them caused an uncomfortable sensation.

Red had a thoughtful look on her face.

"I...honestly hadn't thought about it. I hadn't noticed any differences from reality, so I presumed that it was the same situation here. How had you noticed the wireframe model, as you called it?"

"I've had lots of experience seeing how my avatar works, considering the times I've lost limbs" I say back, with a hint of sarcasm attached.

So the answer was a yes, breasts did behave like in reality here.

Once I was clothed, I proceeded to practice moving about in my changed form. Most things only needed a little tweaking from how I did it normally; mainly compensating for the changed center of gravity. The hair length difference was annoying, though.

I kept losing concentration when I felt it move across my back.

I try and pull off a Force Palm and nod happily as it works, pleased I haven't lost my aim or anything.

"Right, this works. I think I can adjust to being female till we find a fix." I tell Red, who looks relieved at the news.

"...We do know how to find a fix, right?" I ask her, hoping the answer is "yes".

Red looks downwards. Uh oh.

"...Kinda? The only thing we've got going for us is those symbols on the wall about the place. We were hoping you would be able to help when you woke. Maybe the change counts as a status effect, or you got a quest you need to finish to change back?"

A bit of poking about in my status screen reveals that wasn't quite the case.

That glowing purple figure - it was the symbol for the genderswap status effect. A poke of it revealed explanations saying I was cursed, couldn't cure it without doing a ritual somewhere and that the genderswap simulated everything to the same degree it would for a naturally female person. Like Red.

"Well, that sucks. Doesn't even say what ritual I need to complete.." I say, trailing off in annoyance.

Stupid game. While I don't mind being female for a bit, I'd imagine problems would set in after a while. Isn't body dysmorphia a thing?

"Least I won't be found by Kibaou." I say, trying to find the silver lining in this.

After stewing in the fact we were stuck for a few minutes, I was struck by inspiration.

"Maybe Argo knows how to fix this? At minimum, she could advertise the symbols in her guide and offer a warning regarding the cave." I say to Red, opening my messaging window as I did so.

"That's a good idea! Let's ask her." Red seems pleased we've got a solution again.

I proceed to write a short message, outlining what happened and asking for aid.

Hey Argo, Mizu here!

Red and Mojo found me fine, so thanks for that. I'm messaging you to warn about that "foolproof disguise" you mentioned to my friends. Turns out the thing swaps your avatar's gender, as I found out to my annoyance.

So I'm a girl now.

If you can meet up with us, we can give you some tracings of writing on the walls about the item that cursed me (it was a mirror).
Now, while a genderswap is surprising it would be fine if you can reverse it. So far, we can't.

It seems to need the completion of a ritual to work, or so my HUD icon for the status says. We just don't know what ritual, and couldn't read the writing about the area to find out.

Think you can help us? Maybe advertise the writing in your guide, while providing a warning about the quest as well? You could mention you know because of an anonymous source who got stuck with the effect.

Hoping you can help,
Mizu

"Here's hoping she can help" I say to Red, before we get up off the bed to go meet Mojo. We'd forgotten to let him in again once I'd dressed...

0-----------------0
Next bit's part three. This might end up being five or six parts, depending how I split it. Yay for length?

20
2 PM - Day 43

After meeting Mojo, we'd explained the situation to him and decided what to do next. I was going to go off around town with Red, to change my name and see if the average player would notice something off about how I did stuff.

I also inquired about a way to change my hairstyle, but apparently that feature hasn't been found yet. Red and Mojo didn't know, anyway.

Red assured me that no one would notice, and that there were plenty of girls who behaved as I generally did these days. They also said the Japanese I spoke was the female style now, compared to the male one I'd had originally.

I vaguely recall that the Japanese language is different from English in that they had ways of speaking it that differed depending on your gender (beyond the "she said, he said" stuff). English only had varying levels of politeness, I think.

This translator function is awesome!

We split up at the entrance of the inn, and me and Red walked off to find the local church.

Walking about while female was remarkably similar to doing the same as a guy. Most people seemed to treat me the same, with most people not giving me a second glance.

I think I was stared at for a bit by a few guys, though. That's...a new experience.

I'd imagine that in this sort of situation, some guys would act in a way they imagine to be "girly" to stop suspicion from falling on them. I kinda ignored that option and behaved as I did before. No reason to change my way of doing stuff, I figured. The change in appearance alone would be enough to fool the quick look most would give me. The fact no one else knows you can swap gender would do the rest.

People tend to ignore stuff that doesn't fit in what they expect it to, and if something looks odd they'll pick the most likely option vs one which seems more fanciful. Such as that I'd always been a girl who just behaved a bit masculine vs being a male cursed into female form.

This church was a bit fancier than the surrounding buildings, being two stories tall and having what seemed to be stained glass windows. It had a heavy, dark wooden door as the entrance.

Pushing open the door, we walked into the church and up to the local minister NPC. That was the right word, right? Minister?
The guy wore dark red robes and they had a white cross on them, so I'm presuming he was the church guy, anyway. The little yellow crystal was also a hint.

Anyway, I moved in front of the guy and attempted to roleplay my way into getting a new name.

"Greetings, kind sir. I come in search of taking a new name, as my current one is sinful and one I feel unworthy of. What do you require to assist me?"

Think that was too fancy?

The NPC smiled at me, and held out his hand.

"Confess your sins and donate 100 Col, and the Lord shall bless you with a new name."

After handing the guy the amount he wanted, which appeared in a little leather bag with the number 100 on it, he took out a piece of paper from within his robes.

"Write your new name here, and pray at the pews beneath me, and the Lord shall grant you a new name."

OK then, not too bad. Wonder how it'll work with friends list stuff? I ask Red to keep her eye on my name in her friends list as I get my new name, so I can find out.

After writing my new name on the piece of paper, which had a bunch of squiggles and a "sign here" on it (sadly, said squiggles were just blurred out text and not the symbols from the mirror room) I went to the steps nearby and kneeled facing them.

The NPC then did a little speech over me, presumably praising his NPC god.

"Oh lord, please bless this kind young woman with her new name, and rid her of all her sins."

Woman? This curse can even fools NPC?

I was suffused in a gold light for a second, and when my sight cleared I could see my name had changed in my HUD. It now read as Azure.

A query at Red revealed my name had changed in her friends list as well, so it seems I couldn't use this to hide from friends, if I needed to for some reason.

The NPC priest wandered back to where we first saw him and just stood there, so I presume that he reset back to default.

"OK, got a new name. Now what?" I ask Red curiously.

Right as I say that, I get a message from Argo.

What, really? You swapped gender?

That's really odd. I'll add a warning in the guide regarding that dungeon, as well as the fact a cure to the curse isn't currently known. We'll meet at that restaurant I got a meal out of your buddies from.

See ya there about 3,
Argo

Well, that was nice. Seems she's happy to help us, although I won't be surprised if she wants a Col price for the aid. Upon telling Red about the message, she leads me to the meeting spot. We message Mojo while heading there, so he'll be showing up within five minutes or so of us arriving.

--------------------------

I got stared at again while I was walking there with Red.

"So...are guys staring because I look attractive to them? Or is something off with how I'm acting or moving?" I question Red as we walk.

Red takes a few seconds to answer, looking about the crowds and watching what guys are doing, by the looks of it.

"Yeah, it looks like attraction to me. I don't encounter it much myself – I suspect most guy's like long-haired girls." Red pats at her hair at the end of that, emphasizing it's short length.

I point out something that might contradict that.

"But wouldn't girls be kinda rare here? Clearer-tier ones, anyway? I would think you got a fair bit of attention when we faced Illfang."

Red shakes her head at that.

"It's possible people were focused on me, but I was too busy fighting the boss, then trying to defend you from Kibaou to notice."

Makes sense. It was rather frantic around that time. Any "this raider is a cute girl" glances might not be be noticed due to the situations that occured.

"I don't generally care too much, though. If someone was interested in me, I'd prefer it being for me, not for how I look." She continued.

"I agree with that view, frankly. A relationship should mainly be about you liking someone's personality – although look is also an important factor. Just not what should be the most important, I think." I explain my views, nodding as I do so.

"Regarding my own likings, I've always been attracted to short-haired girls. I just figured it seemed more practical, to keep it that short. The general counter seemed to be 'but you can do so much more with it longer.'" I pitch my voice higher, in an attempt to indicate whining, at the last bit.

I miss the small smile Red gives upon hearing what hair type I fancy, busy gesturing to emphasize my quoted answer.

"Regardless, we've kinda drifted offtopic. We were talking about the fact guys are staring at you, and what to do about it." Red drags us back to our original point of discussion.

"Now, I'd suggest just ignoring them, personally. If it keeps bothering you, dressing in such a way as to draw less attention to your appearance is also an option." Red gives some practical advice, glancing at my outfit as she does so.

I'll admit the shirt hugs my new breasts surprisingly snugly, but I'm surprised that's enough to get guys drooling. I was never one to care much on how a girl dressed....was I just the odd one out?

Gods knows media emphasized it enough for it to seep into the social behavior of my gender.

"So...get some less alluring clothes, or ignore them?" I repeat, checking I've understood.

"Yep. A cloak of some sort is an option, as is wearing a breastplate or leather armour. I haven't bothered due to the lack of attention, myself." Red confirms.

I think about that for a bit as we make our way to the meeting place, a restaurant in the markets area.

"I think I'll just try and ignore them. Hopefully, a hairdressers or something will be found soon, so I can cut this long hair. It's...really annoying." I state my answer, waving my hand behind my back as I did so.

The hair – it keeps distracting me. And I swear my neck get's tickled every time I darn move!
I've also noticed my head keeps warmth a lot better now, as a side effect.

"Yeah, hopefully. I never went for long hair myself for the upkeep issue. It takes ages to wash and dry, although I'd imagine that isn't an issue here..."

As Red trails off saying that, we arrive at the restaurant, hidden between a stall selling daggers and one selling something in a bottle. I'm not quite sure what, though.

Mojo isn't there yet, seemingly still busy making his way to us. We spot Argo out the front though, wrapped in her cloak and hidden in shadows.

"You trying to hide from us, Argo?" I ask her in a joking tone.

"Well what do you know, it is you Mizu. Never would have guessed, but you're the only one who talks to me like that." Argo seems surprised by my change.

I'm hurt. Didn't she believe me?

Also, I'm the only one who acts joking with her? What does everyone else do when interacting with her? Be all polite and respectful?

...Actually, I could see that happening. Japanese folk tend to like doing that, after all.

"Yeah, it's me. I go by the name Azure now, though. Shall we go inside to escape prying eyes?" I say to her.

She nods and we follow her in, with Red tapping at her menu as we do so. I presume she's updating Mojo on where to meet us.

This restaurant is an interesting one, with tables where you can sit and eat as per normal, but also the option of private rooms to have a meal in. Argo books one of these for our meeting, and we wander inside and sit down on some cushions laid out there.

Argo takes off her hood as we sit, and I spot whiskers on her face. Didn't she get those from the same quest I did during the beta? Maybe she liked the look and got facepaint of it this time round.

My own whiskers had vanished when I awoke. Red and Mojo hadn't commented on them, so maybe they disappeared upon the quest being completed?

"So, what happened?" Argo asked me once we'd all sat down.

"Well, the short version is I got cursed by a trap mirror. The long one...really only involves me explaining the temple location and description, actually." I was planning on a big speech there, but kinda trailed off upon realizing it wasn't needed.

"Well, that info shall also be helpful to me, so might as well go the long route. You mentioned a mirror?" Argo asked me, gesturing in a "go on" manner as she does so.

"Yeah. so after Red and Mojo found us we'd all searched for that temple together. We found it...here." I say, bringing up my floor map and pointing to the icon labelling it.

"...I can't see that. You forgot to make it visible to others." Argo prompted me.

I blush a bit upon hearing that, causing her to let out a bark of laughter.

"What?" I ask, confused.

"Even how you blush has changed, 'Azure'." Argo comments in amusement.

"Beforehand, when I could get you all embarrassed your ears just turned a bit red. Now your whole face turns a crimson shade. Dunno why that is, but it's pretty funny."

OK~
Don't quite know why that is happening, frankly. Why would how I blush change based on my gender? Is whatever program generating my new appearance thinking this would be a "cuter" method or something?

I suppose as long as it doesn't affect my behavior it doesn't matter.

Anyway, after a change to my settings Argo could now see the map. She spent a few seconds studying the icon, before asking me to continue.

"Anyway, we found the temple in a chasm underground - it had an opening on the mountain we had to climb down using rope Mojo had gotten earlier."

"Once at the temple, which was a shiny white colour, we explored it for the item you said was there."

"Eventually me and Red got separated from Mojo and fell into a pit.We only survived as the pit slowed our fall, for some reason."

Argo made a sound of interest upon hearing that.

"Once me and Red recovered from our near-death experience, we explored the area."

"There was a mirror there Mizu kept turning me away from!" Red chimed in, causing Argo to glance at her.

"That's because I know of similar stuff from fiction and other media. It just felt like the thing was cursed - and it was, as you can see." I gesture at myself at the end, there.

"I thought it was a "curse-on-sight" mirror at first, so was trying to stop Red getting a direct line-of-sight view of the thing. She got past me regardless, but nothing happened, so I figured it was a curse on touch one, then."

Red looks embarrassed hearing that. Well, it was for her own safety I was trying to stop her. She shouldn't have kept trying to escape me, or at least took my precautions to heart.

"We'd noticed some writing on the walls about the mirror, and I was just looking at that when the ground shook, knocking me into the mirror and rending me paralyzed, blind and partially deaf."

Red looks surprised at the news. I'm not sympathetic - they could have seen my status on the party screen, if they'd bothered to check I wouldn't have been stuck till it wore off over five hours later.

"After that, Red finds Mojo somehow, they grab me and haul me back to town. My status effects wore off over time and then I got the story from them once I could move again." I end my tale.

"You forgot to mention I got tracings of the symbols on the wall" Mojo says from the room entrance, surprising us all.

"Mojo! What took you?" Red asks, looking curious. Wait, she didn't know?

"I was scouting the town for Kibaou and his flunkies. They're not here - seems they've moved on to the third floor."

We're up to the third floor now? That's quite a lot quicker than the 1F advance - it's only been around a week, hasn't it?

Argo seems more interested in the news of the tracings than where Mojo was.

"Can I see these tracings? Could be I can read them…" She says to Mojo.

After Mojo spawns a bit of paper from his inventory and hands it to her, Argo proceeds to study it for a few minutes.

"...Yeah, I've got nothing. Not a language I recognize, but I can put it in my guide with a reward fee for a translation. You'd be paying for that, though." Argo gives disappointing news.

Mojo and Red wince a bit, for some reason. Are Argo's services expensive? I only know she likes saying "that'll be 100 Col".

Considering 100 Col is a tiny sum, you'd figure she'd offer stuff for cheap. Unless it was based on rarity of info?

"OK. How much would it be?" I ask her, wanting to get an answer to the riddle of the words,

While I'm finding being a girl to be not too~ bad an experience, I'd much prefer to be able to go back to my male form. Even if it means Kibaou could find me then.

"30k Col." Was her answer.

That's...quite expensive. I could see why Red and Mojo winced, now.

"I don't get a discount price? I did help you with the guide, after all. Not to mention all this info about the curse." I attempt to barter.

It only slightly works.

"Hmm...I guess you've got a point. How about this - you can pay me in installments. 10k now and 5k every week until you've paid it off." Was her answer.

...I think my services aren't valued much.

After making a face at the news, I nodded and doled out the cash. Well, now I'm pretty cleaned out. Only got 2085 Col left, now. I suspect Red and Mojo are in similar straits, considering how they winced earlier.

"Thanks for the business. I'll add a warning about the temple in my guide, as well as mention what the mirror curse does and the writing on the wall. I'll send you a PM if I get anything useful for you." Argo says, before placing the tracings in her inventory and standing up.

I stop her, wanting to know something.

"Hey Argo" I ask, making her pause halfway to the door. "How much would someone need to pay you for you to have revealed my location earlier? And my change?"

"A million Col." She stated bluntly.

Well, don't think anyone's getting that out of her. But wait-

"So why did you reveal it to Mojo and Red? They said you had rebuffed 19 other players already?"

"Those guys?" Argo said with a laugh. "I just told them that I could find you, but to come back with a general location and a million Col. I'm an info broker, but that doesn't mean I'll sell people out for money."

What happened to her "I'll sell anything for Col" rep?

"And the rep you have? You claim to sell anything for Col. Why not player locations?"

Argo adopts a serious expression when I ask that.

"I'm not evil. I spin lies about my knowledge to have people come to me, and claim that I know things but will only sell for a ridiculous price for the things I won't do, or have no knowledge on yet. Mainly the won't do things – I'm pretty quick at getting info."

"I helped your friends as they seemed to genuinely care about you – Red's expression once I mentioned the plains mobs really proved that to me. I charged your buddies to keep quiet to keep up my rep as one who sells anything for cash."

OK, I get her reasoning. Still don't like the charging my friends when she didn't need to part of it, but I can see where she's coming from.

"I can understand that. I'm not particularly happy about charging my friends when you wouldn't sell the info anyway, though." I say with a frown. Argo crosses her arms.

"How about this? We forget the 5k per week part of the deal and I'll just advertise the mystery words for what you've paid me. That work as compensation?"

I pondered bartering for a sec, before remembering I'd already given her the starting cash. No luck changing that price.

A glance at Red and Mojo seemed to incline that'd work – they looked annoyed at finding they'd paid Col when they didn't need to, but the offer of not paying more seemed acceptable to them.

I didn't particularly want to grind near-constantly for the next few weeks to pay this off either, so I nodded.

"Great. With luck, I'll find someone for the mystery words pretty soon." With those words, Argo walked through the room door, and out of sight.

I sigh for a bit before sitting down again. We didn't really eat anything, just talk. I gesture for Red and Mojo to join me in our meal.

No point in our Col going to waste, considering how little we have at present.

1 PM - Day 51/December 24th

Most of a week later and the fourth floor had been unlocked. I'd spent that time wandering around Urbus with Red, trying to get used to the new quirks this female form had to it. I'd adjusted to the physical bits for the most part; it was the social areas I was having a bit of issues with. Mainly how people treated me.

The staring from guys was difficult to get used to. I think a few girls stared once, as well…

On the upside, I'd noticed I was generally more fit and slimmer than my male form. That genderbending rule must include "fitness level" along with "appearance" in what improvements I gained.

I wasn't quite sure whether the advantages were worth the new gender, to be honest. It was nice regardless, though.

Red had managed to get me to join her in doing some Christmas shopping at present, as it was currently the 24th of December. Urbus and the second floor had turned into a snowy wonderland to signify the special occasion, as well. It apparently didn't extend to the first floor or above us, though.

"I'm just amazed that Urbus even celebrates Christmas!" I yell to Red as we wander through a crowd of players in one of Urbus's many markets. My sight was normal at present, as I'd stopped using <<Searching>> while in towns to separate this persona from Mizu.

"I think it's some sort of fantasy-variant, actually." Red yells back, pointing at a decoration as she does so.

I'll admit, I've never quite seen a Santa's Little Goat Helper before, so that snow figure could definitely be a fantasy counterpart.

The streets of Urbus were decorated with white, red and green. Except instead of the classic holly wreaths and Santa figures, we got random animals shapes looking like the mobs of the floor, and a hooded figure in white and green as the Santa substitute. I think I saw a sleigh snowman being pulled by a dragon, as well.

I'm just glad Evil Santa from the anime wasn't making an appearance. Although I think he's scheduled for next year, according to the timeline. Somewhere after the Black Cats TPK, anyway.

I'd looked about to see if Guilds could be formed yet, by the way. Turns out the answer is yes, but Mojo and Red stopped me making one. Apparently people would ask pointed questions about who I am and where the famed "cheater Mizu" went. The fact that Argo's Guide had spread the news of a genderswap quest would cause issues, they said.

I suppose they did have a point. Not like we could do anything as a guild we couldn't as friends, anyway. Well, beyond buying a house - and we were too poor for that.

"So we want one of these….and these...and this would be nice as well. Shall we get a little tree?" Red asks me, chattering to herself as she grabs items from the NPC vendors.

"Where could we put it? We're renting at an inn, remember?" I give as my answer. I'm just glad I'm not getting relegated to pack mule here - the fact we can store stuff in our inventories makes shopping so much easier. Especially as most of it gets to go into Red's inventory, as she's the one buying the stuff.

I'm not quite used to a snowy Christmas, to be honest. I'm from Australia, so we always had the event take place in the Summer season. It was a time of barbeques and heat waves, not roasted meals and snowfights.

I think I prefer this snowy type, personally.

"Under our bedside table, of course." Red says in a matter-of-fact tone. I was now sharing a room with her, as apparently it wasn't a good idea for me to bunk with Mojo. Something about me forgetting about nudity issues due to thinking I was male still.

That only happened once, and me and Mojo were both very embarrassed over it! I'll remember to wear my towel about my upper body as well as the lower half from now on...

The fact I could experience the same issue with Red didn't seem to bother her. Mojo just wilted to her command, as well. Something about never winning arguments with her when she was "like this".

I had no clue what "like this" was, personally. Wanting something, perhaps?

"...and how will Mojo get his presents, if it's in our inn room?" I ask, honestly curious of her answer.

"We'll let him in tomorrow for it." OK, kinda walked into that one.

"OK, you win there. We'll get a tree." Red fist pumps upon hearing my answer, for some reason.

"Why are we even celebrating Christmas in the first place?" I ask her, maneuvering around a clump of people in our way as I do so. "Surely it doesn't really matter compared to clearing the game?"

Red whirls to face me and pokes a finger in my chest as right as I finish speaking.

"Because it's Christmas. It's something from real life, a way to relax and temporarily forget about the life-and-death struggle we go through each day. I don't want what happened to Dan to occur to you or Mojo or anyone else!" OK, that's actually a pretty good reason.

I shut up after that and resumed helping her find gifts for us all. I grabbed a plushy for Red when she was busy looking somewhere else, and purchased a notepad for Mojo. Red said he liked math earlier, so something to write on could be handy for him.

--------------------

9 AM - Day 52/December 25th

The next day we all gathered in Red's room, which was now decorated with a little green tree in a brown pot under the desk we shared. There were also some presents near the pot, wrapped in white paper with our names written on them.

The NPC of Urbus didn't seem to sell coloured wrapping paper, unfortunately.

I'd elected to wear white today, for the Christmas theme, and was wearing a shirt and pants that almost glowed. The others wore their normal gear. Lazy non-theming friends...

"Well, now what? We hand out gifts to each other?" I say, sitting on my bed at the time. Mojo's in a chair near the door while Red's standing near the mini-tree.

"Yep!" Red chirps, grabbing a present and looking at it. Her expression turns puzzled.

"Mizu~" She said in a sing-song voice.

I think I'm in trouble. But what could the reason be?

"Could you read this for me?" She angles the present she's got in my direction.

"Why can't you read it? It says it's for you, regardless." I answer, wary. I know there's a trap here somewhere…

"That might~ be because you wrote the names in English" was her reply.

Oops. Keep forgetting about that.

All she did after that was give me a frown, before opening the wrapping and grabbing her gift.
It was that plushie I saw earlier - a little chibi dragon in the western style made of blue cotton. Looked a bit like Silica's pet, honestly - except hand-sized and made of cloth. It also didn't have feathery wings, I guess."

Red smiled upon seeing the toy and hugged it to herself, giving me a smile. Guess she liked it?

Mojo didn't seem as thrilled with my gift to him, giving me a questioning look upon finding the notepad. He seemed depressed when I explained why I gave it, as well. Did I make a mistake?

If I did, I blame Red. She's his sister – it's odd she doesn't know his likes and dislikes. Maybe she didn't know of anything that he liked that would also be in the game? Not like football exists here, for example.

Red also got a hair decoration from Mojo - some little snowflake crystal clip that looked pretty fragile. Mojo claimed it gave a "+1 to cuteness", which caused a grin to show on Red's face.
She pinned it to her hair right after finding it, stopping a strand from going into her face.

Mojo also got a pair of white shorts from Red, for some reason. Considering the snowy weather outside, it didn't really match the season.

Opening my last gift, which was a small package from Red, I find a bunch of blue cloth with little star patterns on it. Clothing, like what Mojo got?

Lifting it up revealed it to be...a bra and panties? I gave Red a confused look.

Just because I'm female now doesn't mean I like dressing that way. I've kept to gender-neutral clothes so far, and obtained a cloak to stop guys staring at me. Hasn't seemed to work, sadly.

I've also stuck to just wearing undies, as the point of a bra doesn't really apply here. Red thinks I should regardless, but it feels weird~

Mojo looks on the verge of laughing from my reaction, and Red had a smile on her face as well.

"It's a bathing suit." was her answer to my look. This only made me swap to a glare.

Darn it, Red! I don't particularly want to wear this if I go swimming. I find it hard enough ignoring the stares from guys while I'm mostly clothed!

"I thought we needed some new clothes for the fourth floor. It's apparently almost all water-based, with only the cities and staircase entrance being dry land." Was her response.

OK, that makes sense. Now I want to know why she got me what seems to be a two-piece bathing suit for it!

"And this?" I ask, raising the offending clothing in her direction. Honestly, the design isn't too bad. It's just the idea of wearing it that's making me baulk.

Red seems to shrink a bit before answering me, with her face turning crimson.

In a quiet voice, she muttered "I thought you'd look good in it?"

...Is Red attracted to girls? Or me, for that matter? I don't know how to respond to this.

"...OK~. I'll think about it, but you know how I get bothered by guys staring. This would only make it worse." I say slowly, unsure how to react.

She seems mollified I didn't immediately reject the gift. Yay?

Mojo had lost his fight with the giggles when I'd swapped to glaring earlier, and had been quietly laughing in his seat for the last few moments.

"Oh man, Mizu. If this keeps up, next thing you know Red will have you in a dress and bows in your hair." Mojo said in between laughs.

We both glare at him for that comment.

0----------------0

Do note if I've missed references to paying Argo's advertising fee or something. I had Mizu and friends paying her 5k per week for ad services, but changed that to the current situation. I just don't think I updated everything to match.

A New Haircut
1 PM - Same Day

After that, we had a meal at the inn we were at and were just sitting about in the food area, next to a fireplace. I'd tried searching for a hairdressers throughout the week, but had no luck in finding one in the currently-unlocked floors.

The fact I couldn't alter my hair bugged me. And I'd tried taking a dagger to it, as well. The darn stuff regenerated after a few minutes, like when you lose a body part.

Except the hair regen didn't need a priest, I guess.

"So...I heard there was a way to share inventories." I mention to my friends, waking Mojo from a doze and Red from her wooden carvings.

"Oh? What would that be?" Mojo seems curious about it. Red's looking sort of interested, but keeps drifting back to her carving. She's still got her knife in hand.

She's gotten better - most of them are recognizably creatures instead of random blobs. Albeit horribly deformed creatures that likely wouldn't be capable of living if they were real.

"Marriage." I say with relish, seeing both of them do a double-take upon hearing the words.

Ah, payback is sweet. This is for earlier, Mojo and Red!

"M-M-M-Marriage?" Red stutters, seemingly surprised. Her face has turned pink as well.

That "Red likes me" theory seems to be getting more likely…

Mojo's got a surprised look on his face as well. Nothing as bad as Red, though.

"Yep. Apparently a pair of people can share inventory if they're married. I figured it was a good idea for us to do that, so that one of us could resupply the other if one of the pair were fighting in a dungeon and the other at a town or city." I explain my logic.

Red's progressed from pink to the shade of a tomato and seems out of it, but Mojo appears to follow me.

"Hmm...I can how that could be useful. That said, there is the issue of the 'marriage' title to consider…" Mojo muses, seemingly thinking it through.

"Do you know how to get married ingame, or just what it allows you to do?" He questions me.

Snap. I only had my knowledge of Asuna and Kirito's marriage from canon to go on here, and the methods they used to get married were never covered.

"No clue. I'd imagine a quest or just going to a church NPC would do it, though. I could ask Argo if we think it's worthwhile…?" I say, trailing off at the end.

Mojo thinks for a bit more, before shaking his head.

"While the idea holds merit, I don't think I'd be able to go through with it. I'd imagine people would treat these in-game marriages similar to RL ones, considering the situation we're in. I'm not willing to go through with it, even if it's fake and only for the item-sharing feature."

Fair enough, I guess.

"Besides" Mojo adds, "I've only got the choice of Red and you and I think you'd both hate me if I tried." He grins at the end of that.

He gets another glare from me.

Red's still out of it from embarrassment, so I'm taking her response as a "no".

"Well, guess that's not an option we're going to be using." I say, somewhat relieved.

I only brought it up as a joke - I'm glad those two didn't decide to go for it. I'd feel the same way as Mojo, to be honest.

We sit at the fireplace a bit longer, before Red rouses from her daze and looks at me.

"So - shall we go to the fourth floor now?" I suspect there's a reason she want's to do this, and it's something beyond "I'm bored of hanging about here".

"I suppose we don't have any reasons not to..." Was my reply, and stood up to move towards the door. Red dragged Mojo out of his chair and followed me.

--------------------

1:30 PM

We used the teleport gate to head to the fourth floor, crying out the name "Krill" and vanishing in a blue flame animation.

The city of Krill was the first town the clearers from the third floor fight had found, and I heard they had to swim there when they reached the floor. We'd only heard rumours from other players as to what it involved, so I had little idea what awaited us.

Apparently the answer was "water".

We appeared in the air above the Krill teleport gate and splashed down to the ground below us, which was filled with water to a knee-high level.

"Fun." Was my reaction to this, as Red and Mojo splashed down beside me and bathed me in spray.

I was suddenly regretting choosing to wear white for today, as it had now turned all clingy and stuck to me. While that'd happen to any clothing of the material my shirt was from that got damp, white had the unfortunate side-effect of turning semi-translucent.

Red and Mojo had avoided getting their clothes damp beyond the pants-level, due to being a few seconds behind me in transport.

Mojo immediately turned about-face upon seeing me, and Red blushed and panicked.

"Oh no! Mi-Azure, quick! Cover up!" She almost called me by my original name, before remembering we were in public.

"With what?" Was my reply, my hands currently resting by my sides. I didn't have any dry clothes on me, thanks to them splashing me.

I'd forgotten about my blue stuff in my inventory.

The crowds about the gate, composed mainly of players, seemed to be amused by our antics. I suddenly noticed a disturbing number of guys were staring at me.

Ah. Yeah, that's a problem.

Red shook her head a few times, before grabbing my hands and placing them about my breasts.

"Just- Just keep those there while I grab a cloak or something, OK?" She stammered, looking panicked. She swiped open her inventory and began looking through it quickly.

More people had been showing up while this was going on, seemingly attracted by the crowd. I think the population was mainly male, to boot. I saw quite a few leering at me, holding my hands on my breasts as I was.

I have a sudden bout of sympathy for girls who undergo clothing damage in anime.

Suddenly I hear a voice call out "Here!" and a towel is tossed to me. I fumble a capture and wrap it around my chest area, before turning to see the thrower.

It was Asuna, with Kirito in tow. Kirito seemed embarrassed by my current state, looking to the left instead of directly at me.

This could be a problem.

"Thanks for the towel!" I squeak out, not sure how to react. Can Asuna or Kirito recognise me? Neither knew me for very long…

"It's fine. Others have had similar issues when appearing here in groups. This city's half-waterlogged at present, and the vultures hanging about the gates aren't very good for us girls." Asuna replies, giving a glare at the onlookers as she does so.

A few retreat from her gaze, seemingly embarrassed by their actions.

"Wait a second...Don't I know you?" Asuna asked right after that.

Crap, crap, crap.

"Uhh...no?" Was my reply. Real smooth there, Mizu. Real smooth.

"Hmm? Oh, not you. I meant your friends." was Asuna's reply. She then looks directly at Mojo and Red, who've turned back to face me and stopped searching, respectively.

They both have a "uh oh" look on their face at present.

"Yeah...you're that Mizu guy's friends, aren't you? Red and Mojo, wasn't it?"

Oh snap she remembers our names.

Red reluctantly nods, with Mojo joining her.

"Why the long face? Did something happen to Mizu? I know Kibaou hasn't found him yet - he'd be shouting it from the rooftops again if he did. Gods knows he was enthusiastic letting everyone know his opinion on floor two…" Asuna seems curious.

"No, Mizu's fine. He's just hiding from Kibaou at present. We haven't seen him for a while... " Red attempts to explain while pointedly not looking in my direction.

"Ah. Well, here's hoping he'll be OK. If he hadn't saved me, I wouldn't have met Kirito here." Asuna says, pointing at the figure in black as she does so. He startles at the attention.

Kirito? She still formed a relationship with the guy, despite us finding him first?

"Oh?" Red says, unsure how to react.

"Yeah!" Asuna says with a nod. "This guy's been showing me stuff ever since he lost a "who can defeat 50 giant insects first" fight with me on the second floor. I'm kinda bullying him into it, though - he's a bit of a loner and might wander off by himself otherwise."

Well, that part's certainly true.

Kirito looks annoyed at Asuna for explaining this. I get the feeling their relationship hasn't reached the "friendship" stage yet - or potentially even "colleagues".

I've almost dried my shirt now, and begin drying my hair. Wet hair was never a problem when it was short...curse this new length!

Asuna glances at me again as I start doing that.

"You heard about the new hairdresser shop found here? Might be a good idea to cut that short for this floor, if the length bugs you when it's damp."

My dislike was that obvious? Also, yay. Short hair here I come!

"Yeah, I've found it pretty annoying when it gets damp. Where would this shop be?" I ask her.

"It's just a few streets away from the teleport gate. Head left from here and you'll find it."

Not the most helpful directions.

I'm fully dry now, and the onlookers have wandered off, leaving just our group and the few random people who show up to use the gate or teleport in.

"Well, I've gotta go. Come on Kirito, you were going to show me that mob farming spot." Asuna says to us, grabbing Kirito by the arm and dragging him off.

Poor guy. So betting he'll be dashing off first chance he gets.

"She didn't take her towel." Mojo comments, reminding me I was holding it.

Well then, free item. Always a nice thing.

"Finders keepers?" I propose, getting a grin from them both in reply.

Now I was dried, we discussed what to do next. I managed to convince Red to let me go to the hairdressers, but Mojo wanted to go exploring. We resolved to split up and meet back here in a few hours.

---------------------

2 PM

Finding that hairdressers wasn't too hard, despite Asuna's less than helpful directions. "Go left" only works when the street doesn't turn into a mess of side-passages after doing as advised.

We found it eventually though, a small building in a dark blue stone with a circular sign hanging above it. The sign had a picture of crossed scissors on it.

All the buildings here were of that dark blue rock, really. This Krill town was half-flooded at present, so we had to wade our way everywhere. It was quite annoying.

On the upside, we saw some pretty sights.

The water sparkled in the sunlight, reflecting the buildings around us and the sky above. The buildings were taller than the last floor, probably to escape the rising tides, and I think I saw a few streets which seemed to be entirely water channels.

I suspect this city was a fusion of Venice and a normal one.

The NPC of the city wore colourful clothing and moved about via the various side passages, the majority of which seemed to be flooded. They used boats to navigate them, and walked through the water like we were doing if that wasn't an option.

Entering the building revealed it to have a mainly female population. The place contained a few couch to wait on and rows of chairs facing a mirror for the NPC to customize your hair at. The couch had small tables with some papers in front of them.

A variety of players were clustered about the couches or chairs, each with different hairstyles.
Long, short, spiked, smooth, bald, red, blue, yellow, pink, purple - there were a lot of different hairstyles and colours. The long hair wasn't limited to girls either; a few guys were going the ponytail route like Mojo.

I saw various players poking at the air while sitting in those seats, so I presume you manipulate a menu to change your hairstyle, length and colour.

"Wow...impressive." Was Red's first reaction upon entry. I hummed in agreement.

Hairdressers had never been this busy - or more accurately varied - whenever I went for a haircut back in real life.

Although I had seen a few hair colours beyond the classic brown/black/blonde/red shades in my forays into Melbourne for my TAFE classes. Just not this much in one place.

"People are...really embracing the whole "customization" feature, it seems." I say quietly.

All the seats were full at present, so me and Red go sit down on one of the couches to wait.
Those papers, upon inspection, were revealed to be previews of what styles were on offer.

As I had seen from the players in here, you could lengthen or shorten your hair, as well as style it in a variety of different manners. The colour options were essentially any shade you wanted, with a few pictures of the same style in different shades shown as an example. You didn't need to dye it like Mojo and Red had either, as the shop came pre-stocked with whatever dyes you wanted.

Although you could save a fair bit of cash bringing your own dye, as that option was pretty expensive compared to the hair styling ones.

Changing eye colour was also an option, surprisingly, with the same range of shades as offered by the hair options. This would explain why some players seemed to have red or yellow eyes in here...

I looked through the magazines while Red just looked about. She was apparently happy with her current appearance, and just here as company for me.

Maybe she thinks bad things will happen if I vanish from her sight? Thinking on what has happened when I have, she might not be wrong...

I was after a short haired style, but surprised by the sheer variety of style options available. I knew you could do a lot with long hair, but seeing the same was the case with short was a bit of a shocker.

I eventually settled on hair of a dark blue shade, cut in what the game called a "hime-cut" style which had the hair end just above the forehead. It also gave the wearer chin-length strands framing their face.

It reminded me of Hinata's hairstyle from Naruto, seeing it on the page. I picked it for the amusement factor, and that it was short enough it wouldn't bother me.

I was vaguely concerned over the face-bangs, but figured it would be lots easier to adjust to compared to this long hair.

Red didn't seem to recognize my choice when I showed it to her.

"You don't recognize this?" I ask, surprised. I suppose without the rest of Hinata's features to frame it, you can't grasp it that well…

"Nope. Should I?" Red seems confused by my surprise.

"I suppose it doesn't matter. I was just picking this as it resembled the hair of an anime character I liked. Ever heard of Naruto?" A blank look was my answer.

OK, that's just surprising. It's Naruto! The thing's famed in most of the western world as one of the anime long-runners! Not to mention super-popular and advertised in Japan.

...Maybe it never got created here?

I quickly quiz Red on various other anime and manga I could think of off the top of my head. She didn't recognize any of them, although she did say that a few of their plots sounded similar to anime she knew of. Sadly, when she quoted names it was my turn for the blank look.

Guess that theory for multi-world stories doesn't apply here. Alternatively, the fact SAO is set 10 years from my world could mean any anime I know of has vanished into history.

Although considering how long ago stuff like Evangelion is still popular, that doesn't make much sense.

"You've seriously never heard of Pokemon?!" I finally say, heartbroken. I love that franchise - a world where the games weren't made is a terrible one to me. The anime can suffer from never-made syndrome for eternity, though.

"Sorry, Mi-Azure. You must have some obscure tastes; most of what I quoted was mainstream." Another name slip and depressing news were my answer.

I sit quietly for a bit, depressed my favourite series is an unknown here, before Red alerts me to a free spot.

I shrug off my depression and slide into the seat, a menu appearing before my eyes. As shown in the preview guides at the couch area, you could manipulate the menu to change your appearance to whatever you wanted. A little Col marker was in the upper right corner, denoting how much it would cost.

A few minutes of fiddling later and I'd gotten a 3D model of my head to resemble my desired hairstyle. That part had surprised me - I was expecting it to change my actual hair until I was done.

I'd debated on tinting my eyes a shade of white to resemble Byakugan, and decided "why the heck not". The fact you could alter either the pupils or the scera of the eyes was just icing on that cake.

The total price came to 4200 Col, most of that from the eye and dye costs. My haircut itself only cost 400 Col, in comparison. Bringing the required dye if I visited in future seemed a good idea, at that price hike.

Pressing the button, my vision went pure white for a second and I felt a numb feeling on my head area. Once my sight cleared, I could see my changed reflection in the mirror in front of the chair.

I now had my hair short in the hime-cut style I'd selected, with it being a dark blue in shade. Matched my username, now.

OK, Azure isn't quite the same shade as dark blue. It was a type of blue though, so I figured it counted!

Those bangs I was worried about weren't really an issue, with them only barely noticable out of the corners of my eyes. Shaking my head didn't move them enough to obscure sight, either.

Speaking of my eyes, they were now a shade of pure white. I suspect this will still get me looks, but hopefully it would be in the "that's an odd appearance" vs the "that lady's hot" I had experienced before.

I stood up and walked over to Red. I was happy to discover I could no longer feel the annoying brush of long hair on my neck and back. Success!

"Looks interesting." Was Red's comment as she examined me. She took my offered hand and we exited the building in search of Mojo.

Think of Hinata's hairstyle from Naruto, or a short-haired cut with bangs to either side of the face. That's basically what Mizu got as his (her?) new look.

An Unpleasant Encounter
3 PM

You know those thoughts about how I wouldn't suffer from Male Gaze anymore, now I had short hair?

Yeah...that didn't happen. While there were less than before, it seemed my new look was "exotic" or something, as the guy population still looked at me pretty often. And their expressions weren't of curiosity, either.

"Bother. So much for the looks stopping…" I complain to Red as we walk.

"There-there" Red says, patting me on the shoulder as she does. "It isn't too bad. It's less than before, at least? And now it's short enough to cover with a hood if you feel the need!"

I suppose she was right. Still not something I'm gonna get used to anytime soon, I think.

Man, I hope Argo gets some luck in finding a translator for those runes soon. Last time we'd paid her off, she said no one had a clue.

Shame no language teachers/scholars seemed to have been playing when we all got trapped. That would have been really handy.

I managed to ignore it eventually, and we waded our way towards the teleport gates, where we would meet Mojo.

****

We met trouble there before we found him.

"Excuse me, ladies." A voice I hadn't wanted to hear said to me.

"Have you heard of the player Mizu? He's a despicable cheater who is likely hiding behind a persona. Me and my guild, the "Hunters", are searching for him." It was Kibaou.

I slowly turn to face him, internally panicking. Yeah, the guy couldn't harm me here. Didn't mean dealing with him wouldn't be a pain - and my fears from the first day of getting forced out into the PvP zones by weapon skills still applied.

Red seemed to be unhappy to see Kibaou as well, a scowl on her face.

"Ah, miss Red, wasn't it? Have you seen Mizu since our discussion on the second floor?" Kibaou seems to recognize Red.

Is it just me, or is Kibao a bit more...eloquent than before? Maybe it's an act to recover the rep him and his guild have lost? Gods know he wasn't popular in tavern chatter I overheard over the past week.

Kinda surprising tactic coming from Kibaou, though. Maybe a subordinate thought of it?

"Nope." Red says, in a tone indicating she views Kibaou with the same disdain you would poop on a shoe.

Kibaou doesn't seem bothered. "A shame. I had hoped, considering your defence of him at that time, that you were successful in locating him. My guild and me have had no luck, despite scouring the floor from top to bottom."

"How sad." Red says, voice dripping with sarcasm.

"Indeed. We have decided he must be hiding out on another floor, and have begun a search from 1F onwards."

Well, they're never going to find me doing that. Considering the rate we're opening floors, I could stay ahead of them till they dropped the search or something pretty easily.

Unless, of course, I let slip who I am to the guy right now.

"And you, my dear? What's your name?" Kibaou says in a seductive tone while turning in my direction. I do believe he's trying to hit on me.

Ew.

"It's..Azure." I say, stumbling my words a bit in sheer shock. Really~ didn't expect this.

Kibaou grabs my hand from where it was hanging around my waist, and raises it to his lips. I'm a bit too shocked to resist. After a kiss on the top of my hand, he continues.

"Delighted to meet you. Are you partying with Red and her companions?" Why does he want to know this? Why would he care?

I snatch my hand back from him and move back a step.

"I am. They're nice people." I try and convey embarrassment and confusion in my tone. I shouldn't know of Kibaou beyond tavern rumours in this persona, and while those rumours aren't the most flattering outright dislike could be suspicious.

"I see. While Red and her friend are certainly protective of their companions, they can be misguided." Kibaou just insulted me and praised my friends in the same sentence.

I'm not sure whether to be pleased or annoyed. Going with annoyed.

"How so?" I ask, with an offended tone in my voice.

"Red and her friend were once companions of the player Mizu. This player possessed the ability to have infinite stamina, and was unaffected by after-skill lag and other things relating to stamina."

I hum, seemingly impressed.

"I noticed this trait of his on the boss fight during the first floor, and accused him of being Kayaba or an admin of some sort. Upon my claim, he fled!" Kibaou sounds as if my fleeing was proof of guilt.

Red scoffs at this. "Fled? More like defended himself from your claims, with aid from that Agil player, and when you were losing you attacked him! He fled because he was about to be in a fight VS something like 10 players!"

Kibaou twitches for a bit at this, before seeming to calm.

"It is not my fault he was good with words! You and the others all fell to his silver tongue, and I felt violence was my only option at the time."

I pretend to be surprised by this, while Red lets out a bark of laughter at Kibaou's excuses.

"Well, I can see I'm not going to convince you. Good day, Red and Azure."

He bows to us both and walks off. I'm just...frozen for a bit.

Well, add one more to the wall. "Hit on by a guy" and potentially "harassed by a guy". Neither were things I expected to go through. Kibaou's change in behavior was also a surprise.

Red's got a scowl on her face as she stares at Kibaou's retreating back, before she glances at me. I've crouched low to the ground and decided hugging myself was a fine plan.

"You OK, Azure?" She asks, looking unsure how to deal with me.

I shake for a few moments in sheer WTF before pulling myself together.

"Yeah. Yeah, I'll be OK. Just...never expected that to happen with Kibaou, of all people." I say, uncurling and standing up as I do so. My knees shake a bit before I glare at them to stop.

I had thought through the problems with me now being female, and acknowledged I could get hit upon while a girl. I mean, the same went with being male but the methods would be a bit different.

No one kissing my hands, for starters.

I just never expected it to be darn Kibaou who was the one to do it. At least I know my new appearance hides me sufficiently, I guess?

"You sure? You...didn't seem to react too well to that." Red still seems concerned. Can't blame her, frankly.
"In my defence, it was both my first time someone had hit on me so blatantly and it was Kibaou. The guy who wants to kill me. It's...a really weird situation if you think on it."

Red hmms for a bit, before seeming to decide I need a hug.

"Urk?!" I squeak, enfolded within her arms as I am. Her head's snuggling into my chest area.

Is she doing this to comfort me or because she likes me? I decide to return the hug regardless.

It's nice. Red's soft and warm, and I kinda think I needed something comforting after that. I get the feeling Kibaou's attempted wooing will be something I'm gonna bury in my memories.

Mojo finds us like that, with Red giving me a hug.

"Uhh...am I interrupting something?" I hear Mojo say, having closed my eyes when I returned Red's hug.

I feel Red flinch before she tries to let go of me. I open my eyes and turn to see Mojo staring at us with a bemused expression on his face.

Well. This will be fun to explain.

"Mojo! I...uhhh...I can explain?" Red's gotten all flustered and turned a crimson shade again. I've noticed that seems to happen a lot.

Is it that we get in embarrassing situations often or that Red's the type to blush easily, I wonder?

"Please do. I come back from exploring the shops and find you hugging a strange girl. Didn't know you swung that way. What happened to Azure?"

...He doesn't recognize me? Well, this going to get quite a bit more interesting once he finds out.

Red blushes darker at the claim she likes girls, before opening her mouth to refute the claim.

"That's not true! I don't like girls...that way…" That just gets a raised eyebrow from Mojo.

"Sure looked like you did to me. And that still doesn't explain where Azure went. Did we lose her again?" Mojo's quite a lot better at referring to me by my new name and gender than I and Red are. I haven't heard him slip up once.

Also, I resent that statement! I've not gotten lost while with them once!

"Uhh...it was Azure I was hugging" Red mutters, so quietly neither me or Mojo catch it. Her face turns the same shade as her hair as she says that.

"Speak up. What's happened to Azure?" Mojo doesn't seem to be letting her off the hook. Can she harm herself from blushing too hard?

I decide to interrupt and save Red.

"It's me here, Mojo. Red was hugging me for comfort after Kibaou hit on me. I kinda...bluescreened from the act."

Mojo turns to me and stares in surprise for a few seconds, before shaking his head.

"Well...that makes a bit more sense. Kibaou hit on you? Guess that means the disguise holds up." How's Red hugging me make more sense than her hugging a random girl?

Another point for that "Red likes me" theory.

"That said, you look very different now, Azure. The eye change really made you hard to recognize." Hah! It has advantages beyond cosmetic, it seems.

"Thanks. I based this look off a character from an anime I liked. She had short hair and the option was available, so I figured "why not". You can also alter your eye shade at that place, hence the new colour." I preen a bit over my new look. I think I appear pretty nice.

Mojo seems amused by my actions.

"Anyway, getting back to the task at hand. We've met up and Azure's got her haircut. Now what?" He asks Red the last bit, as she was the one to get us here.

Red's stopped blushing by now and smiles at Mojo's question.

"Now we go swimming!" She says with a grin.

So that's why she got me and Mojo swimwear...Oh wait.

My swimwear.

"Red…" I growl at her. What did I say yesterday, hmm?

Her smile stays the same regardless of my tone. She doesn't seem scared of me at present.

"It'll be fun! Come on~" She pleads, looking at me with her lip thrust out.

I believe this sort of behavior is what people refer to as "moe". I feel my resistance crumble.

"Oh fine! I'll go swimming with you. Might find some mobs to kill nearby…" I mutter, hoping for a silver lining. I'm bored and running out of cash from our week in the city. I want to harm something!

...That might be in part frustration from the Kibaou scare, actually.

Mojo just sighs and follows Red as she tugs on my arm, dragging me along to wherever the closest beach is on this floor.

------------------------

3:30 PM

The closest beach turned out to be around 30 minutes away, although I suspect we could have made it in 10 if we hadn't gotten lost trying to find an exit.

Darn side passages.
The area was a short distance from the city of Krill, and contained quite a few people with the same idea as Red. That is, people out for a swim and a bathe in the virtual sun.

Guess everyone wants a chance to relax from the death game looming over us. And this area didn't have any mobs on the beach or shallows, as an additional bonus to the non-fighters.

We all stood on the hot golden sand, surrounded by small bunches of players doing various beach stuff. Swimming, sand castles, sunbathing...eating contents?

I didn't know why that last one was here, actually.

I was arguing with Red regarding my swimwear while Mojo had wandered off to join that food contest. He darn near drooled when he saw the stall and food on offer.

I haven't noticed a difference in the food here since I've arrived, so I find his actions puzzling. That said, I haven't eaten anything either and I'm guessing some players have become cooks by now. Maybe player-made food tastes nicer than the NPC fare I've had so far?

I don't recall my own stuff tasting nicer, but it wasn't too high in skill level at the time either.

"I told you yesterday, Red. I don't particularly want to wear a bikini." Red wasn't giving up.

"Come on~. It won't hurt if you do it. Can't be worse than Kibaou?" She brings up a disturbingly valid point. I've found ignoring those stares remarkably easy after Kibaou. They just don't compare in creepyness.

"I said NO, Red!" I'm sticking to my choice. I'll go for a swim, but not in a bikini. Boxers and shirt would work fine.

Red brings out the moe look again.

"Not looking, not looking!" I quickly close my eyes, having learn't my lesson from the last time I saw that. My will crumbles under that sight...

I hear Red make a grunt of annoyance, before she seems to swap tactics.

"OK, Azure. How about this? We'll go monster hunting afterwards."Not the best attempt, considering I was planning on doing that anyway...

"You can't go for a swim in what you're wearing, anyway! Remember the gate?" Red swaps to exasperation.

Oh yeah, the gate. And transparent-when-wet clothing. She has a point.

I make a frowny face before giving in.

"Fine! I'll wear the stupid bikini. Only because my current gear goes transparent when wet, though!" Red lets out a cheer at my answer.

I bring up my inventory and navigate to the clothes swap menu. Right as I'm about to press the icon to equip the bikini Red seems to realize what I'm doing.
She shouts out "Wait, not here-" and tackles me as I press the button, sending us sprawling to the ground.

I feel the tingly sensation of a clothes swap before the impact with Red sends me crashing into the sand on my back. I'm dazed for a few seconds before realizing what happened.

"Red..." I growl, before suddenly noticing some sensations from my body that are kinda hard to ignore.

Namely, the fact I can feel Red's chest squishing into mine and that my swimsuit appears to be half falling-off.

Blast it all. More public embarrassment. I'm beginning to think we're cursed.

Red gives me a smile from her current location of two-inches-from-my-nose. "You go nude for a second when changing gear. Hadn't you noticed?"

...Nope, hadn't noticed. I've done all gear swaps in private, so maybe that's why? Suppose her trying to stop me makes more sense now.

"Well...thanks for the info. Mind getting off me now?" I ask her, trying to push her up as I do so. She decides to imitate a limpet and cling to me instead.

"OK, why are you doing this?" I say in frustration.

"Your swimsuit's falling off." Was her response. A glare got some elaboration.

"And I'm clinging to you so you won't be nude in a crowd."

I'm pretty sure that stopping me from getting publicly embarrassed is kinda doomed to failure, considering the stares I can see from the corners of my eyes. Red's face kinda blocks most of the view, though.

"Well...while that's nice of you, I think this might be making it worse. I'm beginning to get the impression some people think we've decided here's a good spot for a nude snuggling."

On the upside, they likely can't see more than blurs where our privates and breasts are. Yay for auto-censoring.

Red blushes at that comment, but remains where she is.

And then Mojo finds us again.

"Hey guys, guess who's food eating-" Mojo says while eating a hotdog, before noticing our positions. He sighs, before asking calmly "OK, what's wrong this time? You're really kinda going the opposite route for "not liking girls" with this sort of stuff, Red."

I can feel Red wriggle in embarrassment at that comment.

"Red jumped me for trying to change clothes in public. It apparently makes you nude for a second." I answer, barely able to see Mojo from the corner of my left eye.

"Not the best phrasing, but I get what you meant. You appear to be lacking lower clothes, by the way." That would explain the sand around my butt.

"...Fun. Any advice on how to get my clothes back on without flashing the world?" I ask him hopefully.

"Try putting the swimsuit on again via the menu, while Red's lying on you?" Mojo's advice isn't too helpful.

I debate for a second, before deciding to attempt it. I flail blindly in the direction where my top should be, before encountering something soft.

My mind screams "wrong thing!" and I keep going till I find the cloth of my bathers, dragging them up to my sight. Cue an awkward attempt at a "right"click on the top and I managed to get to the equip screen.

A button press and I felt my swimsuit form around me again, this time not falling half-off due to a flying Red tackle.

That finally done, I peel Red off my body and look about to see what damage control is needed.

It was as I expected, with quite the crowd formed around us, mainly composed of guys to boot. I glared at the crowd and waved my hands at them.

"Shoo! Nothing to see here!" I shout, managing to get them started on wandering elsewhere.

I turn back to Red and give her a hand from her position lying on her back in the sand. After she stands up again, I look at them both.

"Well, this sucked. Why do we keep getting in embarrassing situations, ya think?"

Red's stopped blushing by now, and looks clueless at my question.

"Dunno. It never happened back in real life to me." Mojo laughs at that comment.

"What, ya don't remember the pool incident? Or the various times you accidentally wandered about half-nude at home? While I certainly never got into this stuff, you had it happen on such a basis I'd swear you came from a fanservice anime."

And~ the blush came back.

"Mojo!" Red yells in anger, moving towards him with a raised fist.

Mojo just laughed some more before blocking Red's fists. He didn't block the leg kick, though.

While he was busy moaning on the sand and clutching his privates, Red dusted her hands and turned to face me.

"Let's just forget this happened, OK?" She asks with a grin. I nod, not wanting to share Mojo's fate.

Wait a second, shouldn't he just be numb instead of in-pain? Maybe he's over-reacting to wave off more blows?

Red grabbed my arm while I was pondering that and began dragging me off somewhere. I allowed it because I figured she wanted to get away from this particular area.

Next one should be the last story post for the chapter.
I've been told by @tomaO2 that how I portrayed Kibaou here came across a bit "stiff". Feel free to offer some improvements that still fit the general tone.

The Dangers of Paralysis
3:45 PM

A short while later, we'd moved spots to a less crowded section of the beach. Mojo was swimming a fair distance from land, and Red was helping me adjust to the new sensations of swimming as a girl.

"You know, I didn't blush this much back in RL." Red says suddenly. She didn't?

"You didn't? I'll admit I don't think I turned red when I got embarrassed either, but my memory isn't the best for things in general."

Red hmms at my comment, before posing a theory.

"Think it's the game doing it? I mean, Argo even noted that you blushed differently now you're a girl; could be the game is enhancing when someone gets embarrassed as a visual cue."

She could be onto something there.

"Uhh...but wouldn't the game do that kind of thing to every emotion, if someone went to the trouble to program that kind of thing in? Why only blushing?" I ponder.

Red shrugs. "Maybe Kayaba or whoever programmed this did it as a joke, and forgot to remove it when the game went live?"

Didn't match my knowledge of Kayaba's character, but it's not like the canon story ever went into why he did stuff or what he was like anyway. I didn't count his Heathcliff persona, as he was kinda faking being a normal player there.

We just floated for a while longer, and I experimented with different positions on the water.

"This is new..." I comment, floating on my back near the shore. "I could float on my back before, but these breasts provide extra buoyancy."

And here I was thinking that was an anime-only trope that applies specifically to big-breasted girls.

"It can be a problem diving sometimes, and if they're especially large girls can find it really hard to stay underwater" Red replies. "I have a friend back in RL who has that issue herself."

Red has friends back in reality? No, wait, of course she does.

Kinda odd they're only being brought up now, though.

I sit up and treat water, looking in her direction. She's submerged up to her head at present.

"Why you only bringing them up now? I don't actually know anything about you guys from reality." I ask her curious. Could be it was just a privacy concern, I suppose.

Dan did tell them off for introducing themselves to me properly, after all. Least, I think it was Dan.

Red seems surprised.

"Why? ...I guess it just never came up in conversation. Not like we can contact them or anything, and while I miss them I've still got Mojo and you."

"Fair enough. Who do you have as friends, now we're on the topic? You mentioned a girl...?" I prompt.

Red swims a bit closer and stands on a sandbank before answering me.

"Well, there's Miyuki. She's a bookworm and loves to read, but can be a bit shy and quiet around new people. She has long brown hair, and tends to hide behind it when meeting new people."

I feel there's a trope for that kind of person...

"Ayano is my second friend, and we're both gamers. She's a bit like me, with short hair which last I knew was dyed pink. She likes to swap colours every few months."

"She tends to speak somewhat masculine, which can surprise people sometimes. She's the one I mentioned who has trouble diving."

Ah, that gender roles thing Japan has with it's language. I don't think I can fully understand that issue.

"Kira's my third and final, and she's also a gamer. She's more of a console person than a computer one, so I don't know much about her tastes. She quite likes playing stuff like Shooter games, though."

"All girls." I comment.

"Yep. I didn't seem to click it off with any guys. Although I did get asked out once in middle school..."

Middle school's what I'd consider grades seven to nine, right? Between 12-15?

"Uhh...how old are you, Red?" I ask, surprised. I'd thought she was about 16 – was I wrong?

"I'll be 17 in February!" was her answer. Guess she isn't bothered mentioning her age, like some girls I've known.

Never understood why that kind of thing was a problem, honestly.

"So you were in your first year of high school? I was doing my first year of a university course, for comparison." I get a nod for my answer, as well as a surprised look.

"Did...you not realize I'm 20?" I ask her, curious. I've never been the best at judging ages – could be she thought I was somewhere about 17-18.

A shake of the head is my reply, flicking water in my eyes as she does so.

"Nah! I knew you were older than me, although the fact you were going to a university was a surprise. How you going to manage now you're trapped?"

Snap. How to ward off revealing my "not-from-this-reality" issue?

Wiping my eyes from Red's splashed water droplets, I answer.

"I have no clue. Presumably the hospitals of Japan are looking after my body, and I'd need to redo my course once we're freed. As will everyone else with their lives."

We float quietly for a bit after that, pondering the implications of rejoining society once more.

Red shakes her head again, perking up once more.

"We'll be fine! It's a long way off, we can think of it once we're out!" I nod my agreement and swap back to our original topic.

"So what do you do with your friends? You mentioned you and a few others were gamers, so do you all play in a club?" Clubs were big in Japan, right? All I've got is slice-of-life for my knowledge here, and I've never fully believed it accurate.

"Yeah, we do. I saved up for the NerveGear along with Mojo, and we both bought a copy of SAO to play. My friends couldn't afford a NerveGear or find a copy of SAO, though."

Never understood why this game didn't get a download-over-the-net option. Unless it was to ensure that the number Kayaba wanted trapped got trapped?

"I was going to tell them about the game on Monday, but then we got trapped. What about you?"

"Me? I've never been a social person; always preferred books and video games. I had a few friends, but didn't do things with them much. One went to Uni a year before me, and we've had trouble staying in contact."

Keep it vague. Don't wanna slip our world's year.

"That's no good. You need to try more!" Red says with a smile. I gave one in return before replying.

"She's like me, so we're both a bit antisocial. It can make finding time to do stuff together...difficult."

Red hmmed at the reveal my friend was a girl, and made funny eyes at me.

"Do you like~ her?" She says in a sing-song voice.

Cue sputtering and a shocked look from me.

"What? No! Well, yes as a friend but no as girlfriend material. I wasn't looking for a relationship when we got trapped, regardless,"

Red looked curious of the implications of that, but before she could say anything Mojo swam past us quickly.

"Where ya going Mojo?" I yell, looking at his retreating form.

"Run away~" was his reply, before I feel an impact from behind me that send me flying into the air.

I spin in circles for a few seconds, barely able to see the surroundings. I spot what hit me as I begin to fall.

It's a herd of living coral. They're a pink shade, and seem like they'd barely come up to my knee in height. That said, there's something like 20 of them, and Red's getting overwhelmed.

I angle my arms as I fall and let loose a Force Palm on a few of them as I land, sending up a big splash and scattering them.

"These things remind me of evil Corsola!" I yell in amusement, before attempting another Force Palm on a dazed coral creature.

"Dunno why Mojo's fleeing, they're not that-" I say, before suddenly sinking under the surface. Huh?

My mouth fills with water and attempts to move don't result in anything. I can see a little lightning bolt next to my HP bar.

Now I get it. These things swarm and paralyse-drown their prey. Crap. Must've got surprise-hit by one of them when I aimed for a stunned mob.

I sink slowly into the ocean, spotting a bunch of evil!Corsola coming after me from the surface. I can see their eyes from here – beady little things dark as ink.

I hear a gurgling noise from the surface, before I spot Red diving down to me. Oh yay, someone's coming to save me.

The evil!Corsola pack near me turn and swim towards her, menacing their coral spikes. Red battes them aside and takes an opening to grab me.

"gur-gle blub blub" She says to me, before suddenly increasing in speed rapidly. You can <<Dash>> underwater? How's that work?

Regardless, we quickly move away from the little coral mobs, nearing the shore and Mojo. Red moves at an upwards angle, and we surface before we run out of breath.

Wish I could have equipped my mask. That wouldn't be a problem then.

We arrive at the surface and Red drags me out of the waves and onto the beach. I can see Mojo standing off to the side a bit.

"You guys OK? What happened to Azure? I fled from those guys once I saw another mob get attacked by them." Mojo's panicking a bit.

"I'm mostly unhurt, but Mizu can't move." Red replied, sounding worried.

Remember paralysis, remember paralysis. Heck, you guys have potions to cure the darn thing!

"Hmm...sounds like when I couldn't move back in that kraken dungeon. I got paralyzed by a piece of wood in my neck. There was...Aha!" Mojo cuts himself off, seemingly looking at his HUD.

Finally they notice the darn icons! Took them long enough...

"What? What?" Red says quickly.

"There's a little lightning bolt icon near his HP bar – that means he's inflicted with the Paralysis status effect. I checked up on it after the kraken dungeon."

...Why didn't you remember this for the mirror?

"I...forgot to check with the mirror, due to the sudden change." Mojo says right after I think that, looking embarrassed. Serves him right – I was stuck for ages!

"How do we cure it?" Red wonders, to which Mojo holds out a potion.

"With this antidote potion. Remember how Mizu lent us these a while back? And how we never used them?" I was the only one who ever got those status effects around the 1F dungeon...

"Right! Let's go then – Heal!" Red grabs the potion off Mojo and points it at me. I'm surrounded by a white light for a second and then I can move again.

"Freedom!" I shout, jumping to my feet as I do so. Red and Mojo startle with the sudden movement.

"Well, she's fine." Mojo says with a grin.

I face them and look at Red.

"Thanks for that. As Mojo said, I got paralyzed by a sneak attack. How'd you swim so fast?"

Red gives me a smile in return, looking happy I'm fine.

"I tried to use <<Dash>> while swimming after you."

Huh. So I was right. How come you can dash in water, though?

"So, in light of facing these mobs...I vote we go back to the third floor for grinding." Mojo says suddenly, getting my attention.

Red pouts. Seems she likes the ocean environment.

The pout doesn't work on Mojo, it seems, as he ignores her and looks at me. He wanting my opinion?

I think about it. While the beach area is nice...the mobs seem a bit too tough for us. We came here straight from the second floor, and it wasn't like we did much grinding there. Level-wise, we're in the top range of the first floor, frankly. Not enough to be fighting here.

"I...have to agree. We can't survive here, I feel." I say slowly, before explaining my reasoning.

Red's still upset, but it's two against one. We head back to the teleport gate, with me swapping my bathing suit for my blue shirt and pants along the way.

Haven't quite planned out Mojo's friends yet, so we only hear who Red knows. And yes, I heavily borrowed from common character outlines for them - that doesn't mean they fit said outlines 100%, though.
Although I probably wouldn't be mentioning them again till we escape Aincrad.

So that's the chapter done. Feel free to attempt a decode of the writing on the wall, by the way. I...kinda lost my own notes on the translation.
*shakes fist in direction of Google Drive and it's inability to keep Comment's between formats*
Mind, I still remember the general gist - just not the exact wording.

Anyone know how to post invisitext?

Invisitext is

[color=transparent)(/color]

Replace the () with the [] and you'll have invis-text.
Thanks for that, Shade :)
You reading my story now? I'm honored a great writer of tales likes my beginner attempt.

So, the important bits. That symbol text is in Arabic, and basically traps the person in the opposing gender avatar till they complete a cure quest. Said cure quest isn't 100% planned yet, but I'm thinking of a wearable amulet of which removal reverts you to cursed state again. Like with Twilight Princess Link after Ganon curses him into wolf form.
Mizu probably won't find the cure till sometime past the 20th floor, but he could end up finding a translation of the writing sooner. Haven't planned it out fully yet.

Yes! I knew that using Google translate was worth while! Does anyone want me to post the Google translation?

Go ahead. I'm not bothered by someone doing that - just have it in a spoiler box for the people who don't want to know.
Alright then!
Anyone who touches this mirror must be cursed in the form of opposition to them, trapped until the completion of the ritual Ashi

Hmm...I remember adding an Al to that name. Arabic must not support the line names like Ak-Adma.

Just added links to the latest story posts from the index, so that should be handy for everyone. Anyone ever got fooled by my habit of making the chapter names link-coloured, even if they aren't links?

Now to go post this over at SB. Fun times await :)

Well that was long as hell. Still good but yea, long as hell. When you mentioned needing a disguise I was thinking you would go all assassin's creed and get yourself a hooded robe but then you went all the way with a genderswap.
Genderswaps can be anoying to read but you wrote it well enough that it didn't bother me

Though you probably could go assassin's creed for later levels with their mobility focused armour and your light build
