Administrative Connection (Alt!Powers Tinker/Trump)

having neutral at 0 seems weird to me, since most of our cape interaction is probably going to be that.
also the negative modifier would technically mean we'd lose points.

perhaps a solution to the neutral thing would be having it at 0.1 as that would mean we'd earn something at least simply by spending time with capes.
Uh. The whole point is to drive short term conflict or long term subordination from the shard perspective, to gather data from interaction during conflict. If you meet a cape and just exchange vague pleasantries over lunch the power gets no data and thus has no reason to reward you for the equivalent of eating cardboard.

but wouldn't simply being near mean that data is being exchanged?
otherwise subordination also shouldn't really be rewarded right? it's not like they would interact with their powers unless it's another tinker/spar

Ok. Some clarification before I dive into making your update. You can't get negative data. ^^
As said in the update, the result is absolute value meaning even if it is negative, it is counted as positive.

As for the value of 0. That is true for capes that Taylor haven't met or heard anything of. The moment that Taylor meets a cape, she'll get a first impression meaning, the relationship bar would move from zero, whether in a negative or positive direction. Heck, in my notes the PRT ENE capes already have -0.5 relationship value with Taylor just for being associated with Sophia even if Taylor hasn't met them yet.

@veekie is also correct though. The formula rewards 'conflict' very much. It is the intensity of interaction part of the formula. Having a long pleasant lunch would get like a 1 while having even a brief fight would get like a 7.

Td;lr Your shard promote in-group and out-group perspective, getting into a lot of conflicts and gives bonuses if you're surrounded by enemies. QA HALPING! ^^

Here's something I came up with

Name: Umbrella Gun 2.0

Description: Inspired by the assassination weapon the KGB used; the Umbrella Gun 2.0 is a tinker tech twist on this old design. Using a paintball gun it shoots a pellet full of your choice of drugs. The pellet will fly towards your target, when its about to hit it phase directly into the targets blood stream. The pellet will then dissolve and release the drugs into the target.

If we advanced in the matter phase tech tree and get more relaxed phasing options, an umbrella that switches into being a shield, which could stop any material projectile while letting the light pass through when switched on (something like kingsmen umbrella), which could deliver those chemical pellets, would make a must-have tool for the blue collared workers of Brocton bay. Protecting them against rain and crime in a city filled with gang violence.

Interlude - Danny Hebert
[x] No Invulnerability here!

Interlude - Danny Hebert

X.x.X
Under the cover of heavy rain, Danny Hebert rang the door of a nice two story house repeatedly, his mind going into the earlier conversation with Taylor. There were so many things he had missed. So many things he failed to help her daughter with. For the umpteenth time, Danny felt Annette's loss keenly. She would have known what to do.

Finally, Zoe Barnes cheerfully opened the door, "Danny, what are you doing? You should have brought an umbrella. Come in. Alan is reviewing some case files in the living room."

What is he even doing here?

"Danny, are you alright?"

"I'm fine."

Taylor isn't. I don't know what to do.

"
I need to talk to you."

Zoe took his arm and led him inside, "Alright. But, get out of the rain first."

From inside, Alan's voice called, "Is that Danny? Get him in here. I just opened a good vintage. I'll have him convert to the truth soon enough."

At this point, Danny should have retorted something about beer still being the best or how wine was over-expensive grape juice. Today, though Danny has no room for japes or anything else. There was something burning cold in his mind. Something that just waiting to turn hot and explode. Danny took a deep breath, control, he needed control. Now was not the time for him to lose his temper. If there was even a good time to lose it at all. What he needs was answers.

"Danny, are you alright?" Alan asked as soon as he noticed him even as Zoe sat in sofa near her husband.

"Taylor and I talked today."

"Is there anything wrong with Taylor?" Zoe asked, her voice filled with maternal worry.

"She said Emma was bullying her," Danny carefully watched Zoe and Alan, but they don't seem to know anything about it. Zoe shows most of her expression on her face and while Alan was a fantastic liar, he has his tells.
"Are you sure Danny? Taylor and Emma are basically sisters. They grew up together," Zoe asked.

"This is probably just the typical teenage fight," Alan said nonplussed. "You know how dramatic they are."

Danny was tempted to agree. If he hadn't heard it from Taylor itself, saw how her daughter tried to be strong even as she confessed how much he had failed as a father. Still, he did agree that it didn't make sense. The Emma that Taylor described sounded like a different person --

Shadow Stalker a ward was bullying me

Out of the blue, a thought spun, 'Is this a master ability?'

"
Alan, this is important. Do you know a person named Sophia Hess?", Danny asked

Alan's face immediately shut free of emotion, a clear sign he entered lawyer mode."Yes. I've handled one of case."

"Taylor said that Emma changed the moment that she met this girl. She sounds like the start of this all. Are you sure Emma isn't being unduly influenced?"

"What do you mean?" A worried Zoe asked.

"Taylor described her as a thug. Someone who won't hesitate to use force to get what she wants."

"There are things I can't tell you. But, it isn't like that" Alan said shook his head. "I'm sure that this is just a big misunderstanding."

There seems to be something there. So he asked, "How much do you know and trust this Hess girl?"

"Enough," Alan replied.

Does Alan know this girl is a cape? Still, Danny knew that voice, he won't be getting any information today. "Just promise me Alan. That you would talk to Emma. I want this situation to stop."

Alan's semed to hesitate for a moment, then appeared to make up his mind. "Alright, I promise."

Danny knew that he could press for more. But, Alan has already gotten defensive. As long as the bullying stopped and Taylor was safe for school, that should be enough for now.

X.x.X.

A fire was metaphorically lit under his feet.

While at work, Danny surreptitiously browsed the net for any information regarding capes specifically tinkers. It seemed like its one of the more problematic category. Not only do they need a lot of resources to make their power work, but there were also horror stories about tinkers that were forced into a gang. There was even a member of Slaughterhouse Nine that specifically targets them.
Danny was just glad that he got Taylor to agree on outsourcing the procurement of materials. He doesn't know what will happen if Taylor got outed as a Tinker considering Taylor's objection to joining the wards.

He can't do anything about Taylor wanting to be a hero, either. Many sites who claimed to help cape relatives state that you shouldn't stop them since it would make them unstable. Danny was planning on looking at those psychological papers cited, but its true... what a mess.

Cape statistic painted quite a bleak picture.

"Just saw the overtime sheet.Hey Danny, you're going home early again?" Kurt asked.

"Yeah. I've decided to spend some more time with Taylor."

"That's great!"Kurt slapped his back heartily. "While we're glad for your dedication to the union, having some me time would do you good."

A knock came outside the office.

Amanda from Human Resources came in, "Mr. Hebert, there was a phone call for you from Winslow High."

Danny got a sinking feeling on his stomach.

Did something happen to Taylor?
X.x.X.

Dock Worker Union is a general labor union wherein Danny was the head of hiring and serve us the spokesperson for the group. The organization is already allowing you to hide your precurement of materials, perhaps its time to take a closer look at it and help Danny while at it.

[ ] Extending our Network to the Union
Well, we already have a father inside, if we convince him to allow us to tap to the organization it would only help us and them. Maybe we can even help his job.

[ ] Application Rejected
The Union is probably your Dad's last remaining passion. You'll feel bad for endangering it with your future cape activities.

Taylor seemed to have gained some understanding while clashing with Shadow Stalker. Enough to tinker new materials. Please pick what activity should Taylor focus for the immediate future. Tinkertech takes time to build after all. (Yes. I do track this. Btw, its October 19, 2010 (Tuesday). You triggered on October 14, 2018 (Thursday). So five days has passed. ^^

[ ] It is time for your big debut!
Taylor will begin constructing tinkertech equipment to fight crime!

[ ] Go Big Brother!
Not yet! Its time to gather resources and get more information. Widen your surveillance into the city!

GM note:
I was waffing a bit if I should pick Danny or Alan as the pov for this interlude. In the end, I picked Danny. With the full disclosure option, Danny would appear to become a big part of the quest so I thought I better start laying his characterization now.

Next update will be the continuation of the quest from Taylor pov.

[X] Go Big Brother

Forewarned is forearmed, and all that jazz. Best to get proper intel for our power to work from, and find out about possible threats before they become readily apparent.

[X] Extending our Network to the Union

We need to use anything we have at our disposal to avoid some unpleasant problems when gathering some resources and maybe we find a place we could at least make a temporarily base for making/storing our stuff

[X] Go Big Brother!

We are a Tinker not a Brute or a Shaker meaning we don't physically tackle our problems like them we prepare and make weapons to fight them also we can always prepare to combat ready weapons if something notice us and is preparing to forcefully recruit us

@Night Sentinel
You might have answered it already but is it necessary to have an interaction with a parahuman to gain experience in that particular tech tree. Like if Taylor creates her own group and fights alongside Faultline's Crew for some reason, will she automatically get projection tech from labyrinth by fighting alongside her or she would have to interact specifically with her to get it?

also, how would time be judged in interactions? Sophia, hostile, punching Taylor would be less than 1 second while Sophia, enemy, chasing Taylor for 15 minutes would have a considerably more exposure time for Taylor. If measured by seconds, we would have to pester every parahuman we find to squeeze out any possible tech tree or have a single drawn-out engagement to get complete mastery. Might be something that could break the quest balance down the line.

Ah. I missed one question.

Regarding the fighting within the group.

First, there is a maximum range for Taylor's trump power. Its two city blocks or 200m x 200m for nice round value. If it isn't on that range no data is transmitted. Second, I hope my Math bares out but with a relationship factor of "0-1" you'll need a greater number of battles/conflict or screentime to even rate an upgrade in your tinker tree. So yeah. It pays to actually develop your relationship positively or negatively!

Time is also judged by "scene" (to borrow tabletop convention) and I used my own judgment on what factor I'll give it so that one should be hard to abuse. :)
