[x] No Invulnerability here!
Interlude - Danny Hebert
X.x.X
Under the cover of heavy rain, Danny Hebert rang the door of a nice two story house repeatedly, his mind going into the earlier conversation with Taylor. There were so many things he had missed. So many things he failed to help her daughter with. For the umpteenth time, Danny felt Annette's loss keenly. She would have known what to do.
Finally, Zoe Barnes cheerfully opened the door, "Danny, what are you doing? You should have brought an umbrella. Come in. Alan is reviewing some case files in the living room."
What is he even doing here?
"Danny, are you alright?"
"I'm fine."
Taylor isn't. I don't know what to do.
"I need to talk to you."
Zoe took his arm and led him inside, "Alright. But, get out of the rain first."
From inside, Alan's voice called, "Is that Danny? Get him in here. I just opened a good vintage. I'll have him convert to the truth soon enough."
At this point, Danny should have retorted something about beer still being the best or how wine was over-expensive grape juice. Today, though Danny has no room for japes or anything else. There was something burning cold in his mind. Something that just waiting to turn hot and explode. Danny took a deep breath, control, he needed control. Now was not the time for him to lose his temper. If there was even a good time to lose it at all. What he needs was answers.
"Danny, are you alright?" Alan asked as soon as he noticed him even as Zoe sat in sofa near her husband.
"Taylor and I talked today."
"Is there anything wrong with Taylor?" Zoe asked, her voice filled with maternal worry.
"She said Emma was bullying her," Danny carefully watched Zoe and Alan, but they don't seem to know anything about it. Zoe shows most of her expression on her face and while Alan was a fantastic liar, he has his tells.
"Are you sure Danny? Taylor and Emma are basically sisters. They grew up together," Zoe asked.
"This is probably just the typical teenage fight," Alan said nonplussed. "You know how dramatic they are."
Danny was tempted to agree. If he hadn't heard it from Taylor itself, saw how her daughter tried to be strong even as she confessed how much he had failed as a father. Still, he did agree that it didn't make sense. The Emma that Taylor described sounded like a different person --
Shadow Stalker a ward was bullying me
Out of the blue, a thought spun, 'Is this a master ability?'
"Alan, this is important. Do you know a person named Sophia Hess?", Danny asked
Alan's face immediately shut free of emotion, a clear sign he entered lawyer mode."Yes. I've handled one of case."
"Taylor said that Emma changed the moment that she met this girl. She sounds like the start of this all. Are you sure Emma isn't being unduly influenced?"
"What do you mean?" A worried Zoe asked.
"Taylor described her as a thug. Someone who won't hesitate to use force to get what she wants."
"There are things I can't tell you. But, it isn't like that" Alan said shook his head. "I'm sure that this is just a big misunderstanding."
There seems to be something there. So he asked, "How much do you know and trust this Hess girl?"
"Enough," Alan replied.
Does Alan know this girl is a cape? Still, Danny knew that voice, he won't be getting any information today. "Just promise me Alan. That you would talk to Emma. I want this situation to stop."
Alan's semed to hesitate for a moment, then appeared to make up his mind. "Alright, I promise."
Danny knew that he could press for more. But, Alan has already gotten defensive. As long as the bullying stopped and Taylor was safe for school, that should be enough for now.
X.x.X.
A fire was metaphorically lit under his feet.
While at work, Danny surreptitiously browsed the net for any information regarding capes specifically tinkers. It seemed like its one of the more problematic category. Not only do they need a lot of resources to make their power work, but there were also horror stories about tinkers that were forced into a gang. There was even a member of Slaughterhouse Nine that specifically targets them.
Danny was just glad that he got Taylor to agree on outsourcing the procurement of materials. He doesn't know what will happen if Taylor got outed as a Tinker considering Taylor's objection to joining the wards.
He can't do anything about Taylor wanting to be a hero, either. Many sites who claimed to help cape relatives state that you shouldn't stop them since it would make them unstable. Danny was planning on looking at those psychological papers cited, but its true... what a mess.
Cape statistic painted quite a bleak picture.
"Just saw the overtime sheet.Hey Danny, you're going home early again?" Kurt asked.
"Yeah. I've decided to spend some more time with Taylor."
"That's great!"Kurt slapped his back heartily. "While we're glad for your dedication to the union, having some me time would do you good."
A knock came outside the office.
Amanda from Human Resources came in, "Mr. Hebert, there was a phone call for you from Winslow High."
Danny got a sinking feeling on his stomach.
Did something happen to Taylor?
X.x.X.
Dock Worker Union is a general labor union wherein Danny was the head of hiring and serve us the spokesperson for the group. The organization is already allowing you to hide your precurement of materials, perhaps its time to take a closer look at it and help Danny while at it.
[ ] Extending our Network to the Union
Well, we already have a father inside, if we convince him to allow us to tap to the organization it would only help us and them. Maybe we can even help his job.
[ ] Application Rejected
The Union is probably your Dad's last remaining passion. You'll feel bad for endangering it with your future cape activities.
Taylor seemed to have gained some understanding while clashing with Shadow Stalker. Enough to tinker new materials. Please pick what activity should Taylor focus for the immediate future. Tinkertech takes time to build after all. (Yes. I do track this. Btw, its October 19, 2010 (Tuesday). You triggered on October 14, 2018 (Thursday). So five days has passed. ^^
[ ] It is time for your big debut!
Taylor will begin constructing tinkertech equipment to fight crime!
[ ] Go Big Brother!
Not yet! Its time to gather resources and get more information. Widen your surveillance into the city!
GM note:
I was waffing a bit if I should pick Danny or Alan as the pov for this interlude. In the end, I picked Danny. With the full disclosure option, Danny would appear to become a big part of the quest so I thought I better start laying his characterization now.
Next update will be the continuation of the quest from Taylor pov.
