A Wandering Soul [Multicross OC] [Currently in: RWBY]

I'm mostly confused as to why she is still there. I mean, there is the railroading that has been present quite a bit in this story (and especially this arc), but the whole reason she stuck around was the agreement that she would assist in return for the dragon swords. She knows there are several people in the council that can provide, she knows she needs them not to have her SOUL IMPLODE and she knows the aforementioned people haven't done so for weeks or months, and in fact keep demanding more from her - even actual fealty - despite not having done shit to fulfil their terms. This applies to Nasuada as well, who made that agreement and is therefore the one most held accountable for failure or refusal.

Why is she so surprised they're fucking her up the ass, when she keeps bending over? Several months (presumably; I don't know the exact canon timetable) of service in fighting dragons, mass-producing miracle healing charms and decimating armies should be enough for her to get a sword, no? Instead, she had to fetch them herself and, for this crime, she was presented with a choice between public humiliation in front of the entire army or potentially lifelong service. And what does she do? She says some mean things and promptly decides to keep serving.

Lmao

Maybe she will get the idea of taking her problem to Leona to get help when she talks to Angela. We know that she has plenty of soft power in Healer's guild so now is a good time to use that power.

Ow. So she didn't compare Orrin to Galbatrox. It would hurt him and his cause something fierce. Instead of doing that she goaded him into acting like Galbatrox. To use force to his will on people. To become a tyrant.

I think she will see that there are no future with power hungry people as long as she goes to talk to someone. Often people don't see all options they have when they are amidst of it. I think she will see she will either need to leave or get Orrin & co to eat dirt.

Btw what do you suggest she should and would do if she would permanently sever ties?

Thanks for the chapter.

If she were to sever ties, I'd suggest tracking down the SI - or just showing up in public a few times so he can show up - and finally killing him instead of always running away after mildly inconveniencing him. After that, researching the swords she has and, if needed, travelling to find more. Doing so alone will certainly be more productive than relying on people who know where the swords are but refuse to share even after promising to do so.

Once the research is complete and her plot weakness is healed, she could use her newfound power to kill Galbatorix, if she really insists on doing so. Then she can leave.

I love when the rebels being assholes to the protagonist makes readers forget how much more evil the empire is. (I'm joking, of course.)

Rider 3.10
Rider 3.10

Tensions between me and most of the Varden's leadership stayed high since that one meeting despite Nasuada and a few others trying to smooth things over.

But Orrin had made his ultimatum and his position didn't really allow him to backtrack without throwing his pride away, something the man seemed unwilling to do, and I wasn't going to let others decide what I could or could not do just because they wanted to feel like they had some control of me.

So in the end I simply spent most of my time working on personal projects or with the Healer's Guild documenting how to introduce and improve all the ideas we had come up with on creating the Guild in the first place.

I figured it would be good to have if I ever needed to repeat the whole process elsewhere and they wanted to eventually expand across the entire continent.

It was also a good way to fill the time as we marched to our next target – ironically we were headed back to Feinster, the same city I had humiliated Samuel in.

That wasn't to say that things were uneventful though.

Roran had finally managed to marry Katrina and I had been invited as a guest. Not that I was involved much beyond most of the former Carvahall villagers making sure to stop by and thank me for helping Roran and Eragon rescue her.

It was actually a very refreshing experience simply because outside of those thanks, the villagers were more focused on the newly wed couple and Eragon so I managed to simply sit off to the side and enjoy the sights and sounds of a genuinely happy event. Something of a rarity at the moment.

I even managed to play a prank on Roran by giving him a 'potion' that would help him during the wedding night that had both him and Katrina almost glow red in embarrassment, much to the amusement of the villagers.

Even funnier was when several girls including Katrina cornered me asking for a similar potion only for me to reveal it was just a potion that made the drinker feel warm.

That was it.

I almost pulled something laughing at the looks Roran got that day. It seemed that no matter the setting people were still nosey as fuck about what went on in someone else's bedroom. And apparently Roran now had a reputation.

Well, another reputation anyway.

Because he was the next one to run into the wonderful world that was politics.

Eragon was sent back east to try and speed up the election for the next Dwarven king or queen, something I only knew because Saphira wanted someone to complain to about being forced to separate from her Rider for such a long time. For everyone else, Eragon would simply be a bit more reclusive as one of his new elven guards would act as a body double.

While that was going on, Roran went out with the Varden on a few assignments and actually did fairly well for himself. Managing to complete a mission despite running into Galbatorix's weapons, soldiers that had been magically altered to feel no pain making them remarkably similar to zombies where only headshots or bleeding out would put them down.

It was after that, that Roran had the twin misfortunes of a commanding officer that couldn't handle the slightest challenge to his orders or authority without handing out punishment and needing to completely disregard the man's orders to not only save his captain's life but the entire group.

Roran not only saved his men from being wiped out but also almost single handedly killed nearly two hundred Empire soldiers. And Captain Edric had him arrested for insubordination almost immediately after.

I didn't hear about it until it was over, but Roran cooperated with the arrest, was brought before the Varden's leaders, and was given the option of 30 lashes and a discharge from the Varden or 50 and that would be the end of it.

Roran took 50, and was almost immediately given command of a mixed group of Urgals and Humans and sent on another raid.

And I'll admit, I almost decided to storm up to Nasuada and rip into her for that decision.

I'd be the first to admit I didn't have much of a connection with Roran, but I considered Eragon a friend - if not a very close one. But still, I felt like I should at least look out for his friends and family when I could. The fact that his cousin was punished so harshly without me even knowing about it until it was too late to do anything made me feel like I failed that friendship. It was only Angela pointing out how much extra trouble me publicly arguing with Nasuada would cause when she stopped by to inform me of the whipping incident and that she had been instructed to heal Roran quite a bit before he left and the fact Edric was no longer a captain and likely wouldn't ever be one again that stopped me.

It also helped that Roran seemed to thrive in his new role. Not only did he do well commanding his new soldiers, he even played a vital role in integrating the Urgals to the Varden as a whole. Not easy when they had a reputation for barbarism and in many cases lived up to the stereotypes.

But with a leader both the Varden and the Urgals respected, many of those issues were being resolved simply because the Urgals would follow 'Stronghammer' for his strength and the men would follow the cousin of a Dragon Rider that managed to command what they considered savages.

Probably not the best thing to base interspecies relations on, but if it got them through the siege and later the rest of the war I doubted many would care.

And speaking of sieges, there was a slight knock outside before Arya made her way into my tent to update me on what preliminary plans to expect since we were only about a day away from Feinster at this point.

It was nothing super surprising, instead of directly helping with the siege my job was to keep an eye out for either enemy Dragon Rider to show up and handle them as best I could.

The worst case scenario would be me fighting both of them at once but I didn't think that was too likely. The elves had also started making their way down south out of their forest and if Galbatorix planned on seriously confronting them at all he would need to send one of his Riders to face them.

There was really just one problem.

"Any news about Eragon and Saphira?" I asked my friend.

Because, naturally, Eragon had to make things complicated.

Not only had he been attacked while the next Dwarven leader was being decided by the Az Sweldn rak Anhûin - which is why Saphira had left to join him - he had also sent a message back saying he was going to Ellesméra to briefly meet with Oromis.

And while I 'knew' he was going to do that, it was still hugely inconvenient trying to plan around him when I didn't remember when he would make it back to the Varden.

He better have at least gotten me some of the brightsteel he dug up to make up for the headache.

"They've left the forest, but we have no idea how long it will take them to arrive." Arya responded.

I nodded. "Hopefully they get here within a few days, because both Murtagh and Samuel being in Feinster would be disastrous. I can fight them off easily enough, but I can't be in two places at once and their dragons are a huge mobility advantage."

"You're assuming both of them will be there?"

"No, but hope for the best, plan for the worst, you know?"

"True. And I suppose the only thing worse would be if Galbatorix himself came to face us." Arya mused to which I disagreed.

"I'd actually consider that one of the better scenarios." I said. "I'd have a chance of killing him away from his seat of power and then I could focus more of my time on getting the materials I need to leave."

Arya looked surprised. "You truly think you could kill the Mad King alone?"

I shrugged and gave her a small smile. "Maybe not alone, but I think I'd have a pretty good chance. I finally managed to heal myself enough to have access to some of my more powerful weapons."

I'd finally hit the point where I could Trace Noble Phantasms again.

Even if I was restricted to anything considered D tier or lower, the fact that I could Trace any of the anti-dragon weapons I suddenly had access to again was a massive trump card. One Samuel and Galbatorix would find particularly unpleasant, I hoped.

"Even if you could manage it, I'd rather you didn't attempt to do such a thing alone." Arya said seriously. "It's not worth the risk."

I simply agreed with her and promised I wouldn't intentionally face Galbatorix on my own and then changed the subject. There were only a few hours left before we would be up to our necks in another battle, and I wanted to spend them not thinking about serious things for the moment.

Looks like she didn't do anything regarding the ultimatum that was forced upon her. I mean not in public stance nor in her Healing Guild. She could even have told her apprentice and then let things play out without needing to take direct action. I thought for sure that she would have vented to her at least and then put it most out of her mind... Then get surprise pikachu'd when something happens.

Surprised that Orrin went at that like that with a stance that can't be taken back. Unpopular political stances all about deniability so when he couldn't make something else or let his word get 'used' to mean on another target. Kinda like 'Uh, no you mistook what I meant lol. I meant like this.' Double meaning and so on. Or perhaps he is so used to yes-men. Even with her not doing any actions publicly like that because she ignores him and his 'request' his detractors must think him as weak because he can't force his will on a single lone war hero.

Looks like there wasn't much happening first half since there was mostly a brief overview over what had happened during the time skip.

Roran is doing crazy canon Roran stuff, I see.

I think Nasuada was doing the heavy lifting in Orrin's latest disaster diplomacy. Maybe it was she who smoothed the ruffled feathers of Orrin and Alexandria's party in the background.

I think Nasuada would be lowkey panicking on Alexandria's strength if Nasuada heard her talking about how she might have a shot to kill an undefeated evil wizard king. More in terms of how rigid kings can't handle powers that are more powerful them them. Now she's just having a Alexandria-induced headache whatever someone mentions her name. Orrin would probably be in denial. Perhaps he would do some sacrificial play or false flag on her. No need to win against her if Orrin can make the public think he was right in whatever decision he did and make her the villain. 'See how dangerous unchecked powers is when they aren't controlled by the local highest authority! Namely me!'

Do you have an idea of the next world? It looks like you're speeding through the books now and are finally gearing up to a climax event.

Thanks for the chapter. I'm looking forward to the next chapter. I'm actually kinda happy about the Inheritence Cycle. It's a pretty old setting but it scratched that itch somehow. It has plenty of frustrating characters and norms. It makes it so that one would like to take a few cheap shots at both the setting and its characters.

So, what exactly can she create now?
She can make any mundane object she understands enough to Trace (with limited enchantments if wanted), her handful of Zanpakuto, D rank Noble Phantasms which aren't too impressive but do start having conceptual properties that make them much more useful than just an enchanted sword, and Kanshou and Bakuya (C rank NP commonly used by Archer)

Yep next world is already picked out. I completely forgot how meandering Brisinger and Inheritance were.

hmm...
how much does she understand about explosives?
Slap an Anti-Dragon enchantment on some grenades and chuck it down the throat of a dragon?

also i'm not sure if she can fly or skywalk again, but i'm imagining her tracing a parachute or hang glider when facing dragons in the air.

Yeah, there's no way Arya bought that defleclection Alexandria used at the end there. She must be wondering what kind of crazy antics her friend is planning on getting up to.

Well, looks like she is finally gonna kill a Dragon Rider. Too bad she won't get a dragon egg; that would be cool. Then again it seems her soul is actually healing somewhat.

Think on the positive side.

Eragon and the entire Warden's army is about to fight the final battle. They have prepared for this extensively. Alexanderia has been working alone more and more, ever since Orrin's diplomatic mishap. They are ready to storm everyone but then some poor sod has finally gotten it to tell everyone that their king is missing. There are only a bloody mess left of him but no one can think that he's dead gods no. The poor sod thought he was out doing unkingly things and was told to shut up like before. Only this time Gabby never returned and was thought to be dead because he never returned despite Warden being outside the city with their army.

A terrible loss for the Empire later. Aftermath.

Eragon: We have searched for him everywhere. As far as our magic can say Gabby is dead.
Orrin & Warden: Wooohoo!
Some guy: How?
Eragon: No one knows.
*Foreboding*
Orrin: Ah, who cares about trite stuff like that. Bring me the MONEY I was promised!
Ergaon: Ah, yeah, it's that all the treasures are gone.
*Eragon thinking: but no dragon eggs nor hearts were taken, strangely enough.*
Orrin & co: Noo!
Guy: Suspects?

Eragon: We found a paper.
*takes out the paper and reads it.*
"I have finally gotten this shit fucked up ship to function. It needed most of this useless gold and gems but I think you don't care about that so I have taken myself to free yourself of the need to divide up the loot. The Warden never payed me for my services so this is just my due. Think it was interest rate.

Signed Alexanderia Cross."

Cue her having robbed the entire Empire which had been sitting vast wealth.

Wasn't it a point that Eragon left with the dragons because he found the Vardens leadership at the end to be just as screwed up as the Empires? Outside of the king that is.

Nope he left because he saw it in a vision and decided that going the hermetic monk route was the "smart" decision when rebuilding the Riders. It was not the smart route, being so divorced from the people you protect is a spectacularly bad idea.

It's why Palpatine was so successful in destroying the Jedi if you want an example of why. He had a massive PR campaign going on in the background to the point the masses were completely indifferent at best to Jedi, and outright hostile at worst. All because the Jedi were too distant and didn't really pay attention to the common person.

I still hope Alex gets a Dragon though, and it's definitely a possibility given the giant cache of eggs that Eragon will find in a while.

I forgot about the Roran issue. Nothing quite shows how stupid the Varden are in canon than taking the last surviving family member of your Hero and Superweapon and officially attempting to kill him for daring to be more competent than the twit commander he was assigned to. What kind of message is that?
"I've saved you and the entire squad from death as result of your poor decisions."
"How dare you think you know better than me? You shall be arrested and whipped to within an inch of death!"
But it's totally ok because the two-faced bitch leader, who is apparently too politically weak to stop it despite being the nominal leader of this coalition, who depends on his cousin to counter the strongest fighters the Empire has, had him partially healed so he could immediately oversee a combined unit with former enemy forces that no one expects to actually go well.

I forgot how much I hate all the "leaders" in the Inheritance Cycle and this coming on the heels of the council's bullshit with Alexandria with no resolution is incredibly frustrating. So good job keeping me engaged I suppose.

I totally agree. I liked the first book, and bits and pieces of the other 3 but, looking back the world building sucks.

Yeah, as much as I like Brisinger, it does feel Like Paolini was trying to fit a bit too many things into the last two books. The ending of book 4 especially.

Anyway, as nice as it was seeing one of my favorite settings again, I'm looking forwards to wherever we end up next.

Not going to advocate for, or excuse, Orrin's behaviors, but for context, he was probably drunk (or partially so) which kind of makes things worse in a way. I think it was mentioned in the IC books that Orrin took to drinking sometime after the battle of the Burning Plains as a method to cope with something and the habit just got worse as the war went on. And we also know from our society that drinking can cause people to commit to some bad decisions.

Honestly, the way I see it is that if he had been ruling during a time when the Varden weren't at war with Galby then he would have just been an ok king, neither great nor terrible, just middle of the road. Maybe he would have been known for stimulating the pursuit of the sciences, since that's something he was pretty passionate about before the entire war kicked off, but he probably never should have been on the field as a military commander.

Wasn't it a point that Eragon left with the dragons because he found the Vardens leadership at the end to be just as screwed up as the Empires? Outside of the king that is.
Part of it was that they wanted to make Eragon their immortal god-king and he was kind of not ok with that. Then he realized that even if he hadn't become their king, he had become so powerful everyone would just capitulate to him and he would effectively be ruling over them anyway.

Basically, he didn't want to see himself turn into another Galbatorix.

Nope he left because he saw it in a vision and decided that going the hermetic monk route was the "smart" decision when rebuilding the Riders. It was not the smart route, being so divorced from the people you protect is a spectacularly bad idea.
I'm pretty sure that most of the IC fanbase, what few of us there are still around, would agree with you. Well, let's hope Alexandria can influence him to not do that this go around.

The Varden leaders are all fucking morons who want to replace Galbatorix and keep everything else the same so why bother? Place is doomed no matter what you do.
Honestly that doesn't seem like a bad thing.
It's not like it's shown to have any systematic issues, it's just ruled by an immortal madman who's happy to work with monsters.
It's basically only Galbatorix and the Razaac that actually make the Empire any worse than the other nations we see.

Warden would have had a much more streamlined support from the Empire's population if Gabby didn't do anything right for them. It looked like it was more like a 'I don't care' attitude towards Empire and Warden. So doing a new thing might have alienated even more of them than king/queen on top and change of policies. Also I don't think anyone was interested in a change of leadership. I mean that as in the population wasn't interested in to change how things went. It would have been a golden opportunity to change the Empire from a monarchy to a civil council or something else. However it would have been hard since they didn't have any examples to take inspiration from. Elves were monarchy, Gabby was monarchy, Warden was monarchy and Surda was semi monarchy iirc.

Rider 3.11
Rider 3.11

It was a little concerning how quickly you could tune out the sound of people dying, I thought as I listened to a Varden captain outlining the situation and orders to various sergeants. For the entire day we had been besieging Feinster's walls and unfortunately for us, the Empire's soldiers were doing a pretty good job of keeping us out. Their magicians had managed to stop me from blowing a hole in the walls three separate times and even counterattacked the third time viciously enough that Nasuada suggested I hold back until we could pinpoint and eliminate them.

I agreed since Samuel was likely here providing them with the raw power needed to hold me off.

This would be the fourth time we faced each other and while I considered myself in the lead so far, I think both of us were planning on only one of us walking away alive this time.

So I was being a lot more careful in this battle then I had in the past.

Instead of announcing to the entire battlefield where I was with a rain of swords and giant glowing death beams, I was acting as probably the most terrifying sniper the Empire had never seen.

With my regained ability to trace D rank Noble Phantasms I had swapped from using projected arrows to modified swords. And while D rank wasn't too impressive, three feet of steel with properties for cutting through magic defenses made for excellent arrows for hunting down any magician or officer that dared show their face without them ever knowing where it came from. Though even with their leadership constantly getting picked off and morale in the dirt, the soldiers were still managing to hold the walls.

"They are being remarkably resilient, don't you think?" Angela commented from my side, twirling her fancy dual-bladed staff though she really wasn't here to fight. For the most part she was assisting with the triage stations the Healer's Guild had scattered around the battlefield. "I wonder how much of that is because they are defending their home and how much is because of Galbatorix's forced oaths?"

"Probably a mix of both," I muttered as I put another projectile through the head of a soldier attempting to rally the men around him. "But I wouldn't be surprised if they simply couldn't surrender or flee unless every superior officer was killed or surrendered themselves."

"And how long are you going to skulk around in the background? Usually you like making yourself look like a lighthouse and making magicians panic over how much magic you can use."

I chuckled at the witch. "Ah, can't do that until we figure out where that Rider is hiding. I wouldn't be surprised if he decided to attack a completely different flank than where I set up while every magician in the city tried to exhaust me before he would commit to another fight."

Angela gave me a look and opened her mouth to respond, but was interrupted by a messenger running up to us with news from the frontline directly in front of us. The Empire was sallying out to destroy the siege equipment the Varden had set up. Things like the ladders and battering rams that would make taking the city a hundred times more bloody if they were allowed.

I wasn't sure if it was the orders of one of the more competent Empire officers or a probe by Samuel, but either way I wasn't going to just let them do what they wanted.

After thanking the messenger and splitting up from Angela as she disappeared somewhere into the army I found a slightly raised section of earth that let me see the group of soldiers pouring out of one of the wall's smaller gates and pulled back the string of my bow.

Thanks to my sniping efforts, any badge or mark signaling the leader of the group had been removed but after watching for a bit it wasn't hard to spot the one in charge. He was the one who they all followed when he pointed out a direction. So he was my first target as I lined up the modified sword to his breastplate. Half a second to aim, then release. A perfect shot.

Only for the arrow to fucking bounce off the armor somehow.

I hissed out a curse and snapped off three more arrows. One more at the leader and two at random soldiers only for them all to deflect off, even the ones that hit bare skin. Samuel must have done something to this group then. Probably something like putting so much power into the wards an arrow wasn't enough to break through before it deflected. And to make things worse, the soldiers were just about to hit our own lines.

I bit out another curse, dismissed my bow, and ran towards the front while Bakuya and Kanshou fell into my hands.

Yes it was going to give away my position, but you couldn't win a battle by playing everything safe. If Samuel was going to use this as a distraction I could only hope the group of elves under Arya could hold him off long enough for me to chase him down.

With that in mind I ignited a yellow spell-circle under my foot that launched me to the front of the Empire's charge just as they surged over the line of spearmen trying to hold them back. Black and white flashed as my twin swords lashed out and thankfully whatever magic Samuel had used to protect his soldiers from my arrows wasn't enough to protect them from my blades.

Three soldiers were taken out of the fight before they could even realize what had happened as I cut the head off the leader I had spotted earlier, stabbed another through the heart, and lopped off the arm of one more before he could stab a Varden soldier instead.

"It's the Sun Witch!" Several soldiers screamed and turned to face me. Something I was fine with since it gave the Varden more time to regroup. "Abandon the mission, kill her!"

Well, it was nice to be appreciated I guess.

But even with some fancy wards, they were simply too outmatched. Not to mention outnumbered now that the Varden men were forming up behind me.

Whatever soldiers that were funneled towards me by my allies' spears were pretty quickly cut down until there was only a third of the force that sallied out of the walls. At that point I gradually began to fall back and let the soldiers deal with the heavy lifting. The Empire's troops no longer had any chance of breaking through which meant I could try reaching out to the web of magicians we had across the battlefield for any sign of Samuel making an appearance.

But as the sun slowly lowered on the horizon and no sign of a dragon, it became clear that Samuel wasn't going to show his face today.

And so ended the first day of the siege.

-o-

"Good you're here." Nasuada greeted as I pushed aside the flap to the command tent. "Were there any new issues on your front?"

My relationship with the Varden's leadership might have been strained after Orrin's stunt, but the middle of a battlefield where hundreds could die because of one mistake wasn't the place to hold a grudge. So by unspoken agreement Nasuada and I decided to ignore the issue until later.

"They've started spreading out wards that can deflect my arrows to the more important officers that remain on the wall I was at, but not anywhere else when I tested a different section. Unless I spend the entire day running from one end of the city to the other I'm probably not going to be able to pick them off as easily." I mentioned while I scanned the rough map detailing the siege.

Unfortunately it didn't look much different than the one I had seen the night before, so I wasn't the only one that had nothing to show for a day's worth of battle. Though if I had to look on the bright side, neither did the Empire.

There were several mutters and grunts from the surrounding advisors that showed they were just as pleased with that news as I was. An enemy without leadership or morale was much easier to wear down or even convince to surrender. And there were a lot fewer people willing to step up and lead when a magic steel arrow(sword) would come out of nowhere the moment you were noticed leading.

"Impenetrable gates, magic resistant walls, and now arrow proof soldiers." One of them grumbled. "And their Dragon Rider is still hiding in the shadows. Is it even possible to take the city?"

Jörmundur looked at the man. "Don't be discouraged just yet. We may not have made much progress but it has only been a single day. The rams may still break through tomorrow."

"We could also send agents to open the gates from the inside." Arya commented. "A small team could scale the walls and reach the mechanisms, allowing the army to enter the city."

It wasn't exactly a novel idea, but it was a pretty good one.

The biggest issue would be slipping the infiltrators in without having them immediately swarmed by soldiers. That meant they needed to slip past any wards the enemy magicians put up, reach the mechanism, and then survive long enough to escape or link up with the army storming the gate.

Criteria that only fourteen people in the army met. Me, Arya, and Eragon's twelve bodyguards.

"No, we can't afford risking the elves in a mission like that." Nasuada eventually denied after some thought. "All of you are our only counter to Samuel and his dragon until Eragon returns. It's risky enough scattering you throughout the army to fend them off for a time. We can't risk a trap culling those numbers. Not until we see if conventional measures will help us break through."

"If we cannot get through the walls the Varden might not have the strength to take the city, let alone march against Galbatorix!" Arya argued.

"Do we know when Eragon is supposed to return yet?" I interrupted. It was likely there wouldn't have been a fight. Arya was a lot more collected than I was, but I didn't want to sit through more arguments. I had other things to do tonight.

"Within two weeks. Potentially as few as a few days." Was the answer.

So, not great but not terrible. We could definitely wait that long, but the issue of Galbatorix organizing the soldiers from the surrounding cities and towns to send at our backs was something we couldn't ignore. If we gave the enemy too much time, we ran the risk of being surrounded. So after a brief discussion, Arya's idea was shelved for a day until we could see how much progress would be made now that we weren't setting things up and the captains could devote their full attention to assaulting the walls.

"Our next issue is what to do about their Dragon Rider." Nasuada broached the topic. "Alexandria, you mentioned special wards. Was that his doing?"

I nodded. "Both the wards and the last sally towards our line, I think."

"I think he was focused on pinpointing where I was and testing some defenses today because I didn't see the wards anywhere else, and I can't think the Empire has another magician capable of warding a group of fifty men."

Jörmundur leaned forward. "For what purpose?"

"Testing out defenses before we fight again." I gave my best guess. "I really humiliated him last time, so I think he's trying to stack every advantage he can against me. And since I've already proven I can cut through his defensive wards…"

"He's using his men as fodder while trying to draw you out so he can see if he can block you without fighting."

"Exactly."

It wasn't a terrible plan, especially because he had at least some success with any projectile I used, though it was pretty morally bankrupt.

"We'll need to keep that in mind the longer we fight. And we will have to find a way to draw him out before he can completely defend against your magic. Lady Lightbringer, how likely is it that Samuel will find a counter to all your weapons before we breach the walls."

I gave a brief thought to the almost literally uncountable number of weapon blueprints littering my soulscape along with the other spells at my disposal.

"I think I'll be fine."
