Arrival 1.3
You bolt for the window, arriving just in time to see the goblin pick itself up off the ground and sprint for the compound's wall. You frown for a moment, before you reach out with your mind, wrapping the goblin in bands of invisible force. It struggles to free itself, testing the limits of it's invisible chains, but but it's efforts are in vain, and a few moments later you've dropped down to the ground, your psi-knife glowing a brilliant azure as you walk towards the restrained goblin. You raise your hand, preparing to knock the goblin unconscious when the creature blurted out "Ekkie surrenders! Ekkie surrenders!"
Well, that would work too.
Fifteen minutes later, you were sitting in the manor's study, staring across the table at a bound Ekkie. The goblin's pockets and pack had been emptied out on to the table, revealing a motley assortment of items and gear that ranged from lockpicks and some sort of compass to a literal skull. It didn't look like a human skull, thankfully, but you weren't sure you liked the way the goblin's eyes kept darting to it.
You half turned as Heidmarch entered the room, keeping one eye on the goblin as she lead a man in leather armor with an axe hanging from his hip. He made a beeline for the table, picking up the compass, and turning it over in his hands. "Aye, this is mind, Venture-Captain. Little bugger must have lifted it from my room." He sounded almost sheepish as he said it; almost as if he was embarrassed that he had been robbed.
"And anything else, Joadric?"
The man did a quick scan of the table after that, and shook his head. "Nothing else. Well, maybe some of the coin, but if the goblin took some of mine, she didn't take much. I don't see any trouble in leaving the spoils to the lady who caught it."
Heidmarch nodded, then sat down next to you, facing the goblin. "Good. In that case, lets get down to business, goblin. I want to know who you're working for, and why you're robbing my lodge."
"Ekkie no speak Common! Ekkie only speak Goblin!"
The three of you stared at the goblin for a long moment before Joadric stated the obvious. "You just spoke in Common."
"Did not!"
"And now you just responded to me speaking in common."
"....Ekkie don't speak common very good?"
"That much is clear." Heidmarch sighed, then continued. "Tell us who sent you. Otherwise I'll have to involve the guard, and I assure you, you will find that I am far more forgiving then they are."
"Ekkie won't say nothing!"
You drum your hands on the tabletop for a moment before offering to help. "I can pull the information from her mind if you would like."
Heidmarch shot you a surprised look. "You can do that?"
You nod, then turn your attention back to Ekkie, speaking to her as you focused your will. "Now Ekkie, whatever you do, don't think about who sent you."
Ekkie's "Wha-" was cut off as you invaded her mind. It wasn't actually as simple as you had expected, though Ekkie clearly wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed, but regardless, the identity of the one who sent her was hovering at the forefront of her mind. One Versevosh, of the Nightsoil marauders.
The wonders of the pink elephants trick. It never failed.
Granted, neither of those names actually meant anything to you, and neither Heidmarch nor Joadric seemed to recognize them when you relayed the names, but Ekkie's response was one of nigh terror. "Scary witchy woman stay out of Ekkie's head! Out, out, OUT!"
Terror Heidmarch was quick to exploit. "My friend here can do this all day, if she has too. I can make her stop, but I can only do that if you tell me what you know."
The goblin quivered for a moment, then nodded jerkily. "Ekkie tell you what you want." Then she seemed to rally. "But only if you give Ekkie Plarg!"
You frowned, as did your companions, but then the goblin gestured towards the skull. Your frown deepened, and you found yourself asking the obvious question. "You named the skull?"
"Plarg not skull! Plarg cage-brother! Plarge super smart! Plarg protect Ekkie!" You open your mouth to reply, then close it, not entirely sure how to reply to that. Heidmarch seemed to have a similar reaction, but Joadric simply stared at the goblin for a long moment before shrugging and pushing the skull over the goblin. Ekkie immediately embraced it, rocking it like a baby. "Plarg! Ekkie missed you! Yes, yes!" She turned back to the three of you. "Plarg says Ekkie tell you about Nightsoil Marauders. But only if witchy woman go away!"
You shared a look with Heidmarch, who seemed to give you a "What can you do?" shrug, then stood and left the room, taking a seat in the nearby foyer. Then you leaned back and shifted your senses back towards the room, catching the middle of Ekkie's rambling explanation.
"...and then Versevosh comes up, and he has this huuuge hat, with things hanging off of it, shiny things, and Versevosh says Ekkie has to prove herself by stealing the shiny from the longshanks and then Ekkie can join Gang." Ekkie stopped, cocking her head. "Ekkie no think she joining gang now."
Heidmarch nodded. "That's probably true. Did he tell you to specifically steal from this manor? Were you supposed to steal anything in particular?"
"Funny hat goblin showed Ekkie picture of shiny Ekkie was supposed to steal. And Ekkie stole it! But then scary witchy woman caught Ekkie."
Heidmarch frowned, and she pulled a compass like object out of her pocket, showing it to the goblin. "Were you supposed to steal something like this?"
"Yes! That shiny like picture Ekkie was showed. Funny hat goblin wanted it! He said big boss would be happy with it. But he said Ekkie not talk to big boss because big boss was tall and mean and squash Ekkie."
"I see. That's very helpful. And you said you got into the sewers at a knackery?"
"A knack-what?"
Heidmarch sighed. "A place where they slaughter horses."
"Oh! Why not you just say that? Other goblins showed me to smelly horse killing place. It great place, because they cut horses there and you can see their insides and Ekkie gets lots of dead horse to eat. Ekkie supposed to go back there when she done."
"I see. And can you tell me where this place is?"
Ekkie hesitated. "Maybe Ekkie help you. Maybe Ekkie take you there, and take you through sewers to gang hideout. But only if you promise to let Ekkie go at the end!"
Heidmarch hmmed before responding. "I'll have to consider that. In the mean time, would you like something to drink, Ekkie? Or maybe something to eat?"
Ekkie responded enthusiastically, and a moment later, Heidmarch exited the room, but she didn't head towards the kitchen.
Instead she found you. You drew your senses back into your own body, and stood to greet her, but she waved it off. "I assume you were listening? I felt like someone was watching me."
You nod slowly. "I can extend my senses outside my body for a short distance."
"Right." She shook her head. "We're clearly going to have to talk about what you can do later. But right now, I'm more concerned about who sent that goblin, and why they're after wayfinders. That's not normal behavior for goblins."
"Wayfarers?"
"Right, I forgot, you're not from around here." She fished the compass like object out of her pocket. "This is a wayfayer. It serves as a compass, among other things. It's fairly valuable, but more importantly, it's almost an unofficial badge of office for Pathfinders like myself. We all get one when we finish our trials at the Grand Lodge, and very few people outside the society carry them. For a thief to be sent specifically after these..."
"Someone wants to frame your organization. Or make use of it's reputation."
She nodded. "That's what I think. Normally I'd dispatch a team of pathfinders to deal with this, but it'll be at least a week before the next team is due in city. With my husband out of town, I can't leave the lodge unattended, and I won't send Joadric on this sort of mission alone, no matter how sure of himself he is."
"So you want me to help him track down these goblins down for you."
"Yes. You'll be paid, of course, but I'd rather deal with this sooner rather than later."
"I see. So what would be the plan? Follow Ekkie back to their base and clear them out? Do you really think we can trust her?"
"Trust her? Probably not. But tracking goblins through the sewers is never easy, and if she can lead us there directly, all the better. And if not, well you clearly have some ability to extract information from her mind. If you need to do that again, so be it. And if worse comes to worse, we can always track down the knackery ourselves. The cloth that meat's wrapped in has a logo on it; I might not be familiar with it, but I'm sure someone on the streets could point us in the right direction."
What will you do?
[]Refuse the mission. This isn't your problem.
[]Accept the mission.
-[]Allow Ekkie to lead you to the gang hideout in exchange for her freedom.
-[]Pull the information from her mind directly. It might take a while, but it'll make it impossible for her to betray you.
-[]Track down the knackery yourself, and then search for the goblins from there.
--[]Go in alone.
--[]Take Joadric.
