[X] The Engineer That Will Make Her Own Mecha! (Though First, Gotta Make Her Brother's Mech!)
-[X] Engineering Degree! You might not be able to pilot a Mech, but you sure do know them inside and out. You can analyze weapons and parts, think of ways to make them better...who knows, if you get the funding, you might be able to make yoyr own mech
-[X] Technology +2 Points, Intrigue +2 Points.
-[X] Judge of Character - When recruiting Administrators or Pilots, their stats may not go below 8.
[X] Plan: I Specialize in 'Management'
- [X] Management Degree! Not that...you studied, all that much. Rather, from the moment you entered college, you've been practicing...business politics. Look, it's not your fault everyone else has great ideas that you'd like to try. And they've never proven the sabotage either!
- [X] Diplomacy +2, Intrigue +2
-[X] Judge of Character - When recruiting Administrators or Pilots, their stats may not go below 8.
- [X] Brother Name Write in: Titus Vermillion
[x] Plan Promoter Motor -[x] Marketing Degree! You knew how people - customers, sponsors - worked. You know what to say to get people to invest in you. This was just one more project - you feel you can sell yourself to the right people. You don't need to run the place by yourself after all. -[x] Diplomacy + 2 Points, Technology + 2 Points
-[X] Judge of Character - When recruiting Administrators or Pilots, their stats may not go below 8. -[x] Brother Name Write in: Koyomi Vermillion
Badou immediately brightens up at that. Your brother grins at you, and with a quick "I'll go test the systems!" he runs past you and towards the metallic stairs that will get him to the hangar's raised platforms.
You giggle slightly as you follow along much more slowly. As you walk, dodging dusty, rusted or covered bits of machinery, you think of your brother.
There was a reason you weren't as nervous about the actual Battle part of running a Mech Battle team.
You weren't about to say it to his face, but Badou really was a great pilot. There had been times in your teen years that you envied him, but the fact that he was kind of a disaster beyond that meant that didn't last.
Badou had great reflexes, and could make his mech move almost instinctually, but where your brother really shined was his uncanny markmanship. It wasn't even just in a mech, either. For as long as you could remember, that showoff had been pelting anything and everything with crap he's thrown, or flicked, or shot with a toy gun.
The guy was scouted by a top university for his skills, and while he wasn't his team's undisputed ace, he didn't warm the bench either. He was a solid performer who could easily go pro.
But he didn't. Instead, he stuck with you and your father's dream.
....Maybe you'll lay off your brother. Just for a bit.
Rank 1 - Trickshooter: (Once per Match) Add +10 to a ranged attack roll, and do an additional d4 damage if it hits.
------------
You make your way up the stairs, onto the black metal platforms and catch up with Badou just as he is trying to get the cockpit open.
He's failing.
With an annoyed huff, he kicks the the back of the mech's head unit, where the hatch to the cockpit was. All it accomplishes is making him yelp in pain and hop on his foot.
You laugh as you approach. "Couldn't have waited for the girl with the passcodes before you went om ahead, huh?" you tease, smirking.
He looks at you sheepishly and shrugs. "Gimme a break, Elle. I'm excited."
You laugh again and walk up to the head unit. You tap the side of your head and order your Iris to connect with the mech's system.
It's an older model, so it takes a bit.
As it's loading, your eyes look the machine over appraisingly. You've worked with machines your entire career, they were what you knew. A pilot could be as skilled as they could be, but without a proper machine, they'd still get stomped into the ground.
So, what were you working with?
Standard Federation model - this was a Mobile Frame, not an Imperial Knight. Obsolete in the core worlds, of course, but more than servicable here. Still better than everything but the richest third of Imperial teams too. Not that you expected to fight much Imperial teams yet.
The machine is gunmetal gray, unpainted. It was the last mech your dad got before the team got shut down. The newest model at that time. One of the PX series....
[ ] A PX-001 Wolfhound
The Wolfhound is the first unit in the PX series, and the testbed for future units. This one is easy to pilot, quite versatile, and has no glaring weaknesses. On the flipside, no outstanding strengths either.
(Engineer Insights: The Wolfhound's easy to customize too. If you want something you can really tweak, this is the one.)
Stats:
Core HP: 8/8
Arms HP: 4/4
Arms AC Bonus: +10
Legs HP: 6/6
Move: 3
AC: 20 (Default), 50 ( Pilot Reflexes +20, Arms Bonus +10)
- Superheated Saber (Secondary, Melee)
Hit Bonus: +0
Damage: 1d4
Range: 1
Ammo: NA
- Wolfhound Shield (Defensive)
+10 AC when equipped. Cannot be used at the same time as the Assault Rifle.
[ ] A PX-004 Ursa Major
A dedicated heavy sniper unit. The Ursa Major is typically placed in the back of a team as it snipes the opponent with its armor-piercing firepower. Heavily armored and slow.
(Engineer Insights: We can probably mod it to make it even more armored. Trying to make a light sniper out of this is...suboptimal.)
Stats:
Core HP: 10/10
Arms HP: 6/6
Arms AC Bonus: +20
Legs HP: 8/8
Move: 1
AC: 40 (Default), 60 (Arms Bonus +20, Pilot Reflexes unable to be added)
Armaments:
- PT33 Anti-Armor Rifle (Primary, Ranged)
Hit Bonus: +10
Damage: 1d10
Range: 3-6
Ammo: 5
- PTA-13 Pistol (Secondary, Ranged)
Hit Bonus: +0
Damage: 1d2
Range: 2-3
Ammo: 12
- Heavy Shoulder Shields (Defensive)
Reduces damage taken by 1.
[ ] A PX-013 Jaguar
Quick and frail assault unit. The Jaguar dashes in, strikes hard, then falls back. Thinly armored, but with acceleration so high you're worried your brother can't take it.
(Engineer Insights: We can probably double down on its speed and firepower. Maybe add beam weapons? Armoring it up would cut into its primary function, though it may be possible to reinforce it a bit.)
Half an hour later, you lean over the railing on the balcony overlooking the training yard as Badou takes his machine for a test drive.
You watch your brother dash and jump over hologram obstacles, see him shoot simulated hardlight opponents.
You smile slightly. He's showing off.
As he continues having fun, you tap your Iris and bring out the data you had on the company. The file is named Firebird Promotions Inc, the company being named after the team it managed.
A sudden thought hits you. You could change the name. Of the company and the team both. It could be a fresh start.
The company name especially. You were toying with making your own weapons and mechs...you could actually sell your designs under the company as supplemtary income to the team's games. You'd have to change the name then - you wouldn't really just be a promotion.
But just...changing the name of the team leaves you feeling cold. That was the name your dad gave it. It meant something. Your dad said Firebirds were a symbol of resilience - they were undying. No matter what brought them down, they kept coming back up.
....But dad also said a person needed to forge their own identity. You had to make your own way. Dad wouldn't want you to just keep hanging on to old things.
You sigh.
In the end you decide to...

A few hours later, you and Badou find yourselves back in the office.
The two of you are on the couch, noisily slurping down instant noodles, the desk covered in discarded beer cans.
Your jacket and neat hairbun are long gone, and your brother is probably too drunk to drive to his apartment.
"No wonder you've been...s-single since birth, sis. Look at you, you're a mess." Badou teases, which is rich coming from the guy half-passed out on the couch.
"Shaddup...I'm...just...waiting for my soulmate! One true love!" you grumble, swaying slightly.
You walk over to the shelf and pick out a random data stick from the back of it. You insert it into the newly installed datapad on the desk and hit play.
The holographic monitor whirrs to life as you shove your brother aside to sit on the couch. He grunts as he falls over.
The monitor shows a Mech Battle match. The arena is made to look like an old Roman Colloseum from Terra-One.
The floor is littered with destroyed mech parts. Two competitors left.
One mech is huge. Black with silver highlights, it has two shields floating lazily behind it. It carries a huge minigun.
The other is red and gold. A head shaped like a winged helm. Two wicked-looking grasping claws in its hands.
Badou is immediately alert. He leans over and looks at you. "Elle, that's..."
"Dad." you confirm. You don't remember this match, but you could never forget your father's beloved partner.
The ATX-457. Chevalier Rouge.
"And it all comes down to this folks. The final ome on one of the Baryon Summer Cup. Michel Vermillion was a total unknown when this started, but who would have thought he'd be fighting toe to toe with the Champ?"
You lean forward, mesmerized. Badou does the same next to you.
Position: Tyrant is range 3 away from Chevalier. Dead ahead, no obstacles. Edge of Arena is 6 away on all sides for both combatants.
Round 1 Initiative:
Roll d100+Reflexes
Chevalier: 75+40 - 115
Tyrant: 72+20 - 92
Your father's mech moves first. It charges straight towards the black titan before the opponenent could start shooting. The claws on Chevalier's hands start to heat up.
Chevalier moves 3 forward.
Chevalier attack roll against Tyrant arms: 89+50 = 139
Tyrant's orbital shield intercept at 50+: 64
Damage blocked.
The claws flash. They lash out towards the black machine's right shoulder, intent on tearing it off.
But one of the flying shields dive down, quick as lightning. It intercepts Chevalier's swipe, the superheated claw bouncing off reinforced adamantite.
The black giant can't shoot its gun at this range. It tries to back off.
Disengaging from Melee Roll - Reflexes vs Melee Skill
Tyrant: 71+20
Chevalier: 10+50
The black giant shoves your father's mech off with its armored shoulder. The Chevalier stumbles.
The champion finds his range.
Tyrant moves 3 backward.
Tyrant Ranged Attack Roll: 58+50 = 108
Chevalier uses Trait <Mirror Image> (Once Per Match, force an opponent to reroll an Attack Roll)
Reroll: 36+50 = 86
The Champion fires his minigun. A rain of bullets head straight for your father, but the Chevalier is still. And, then, like a ghost, it seems to blur.
The bullets pass through it harmlessly. The Chevalier raises its claw and prepares to charge again.
You watch in awe as your father, rushes for the champion. You smile as he uses his claws to destroy the floating shields.
Your heart soars as the Chevalier strikes at the red Target on the Tyrant's chest.
You hear the cheers as if you were there.
You and your brother look at each other.
Soon, Dad, soon. We'll make our own way into this world you loved.

So, this is the end of Chargen. Next update we're officially onto Month 1 of the game. I'm not...super married to the combat system. There will be tweaks if we find problems, but for now it is what it is.
For the name, maybe something phoenix related? Not sure if it's worth it though unless someone thinks of a good one. Maybe change the company name but keep the team name.
Edit: On team and company vote
[X] Keep Team as The Firebirds
[X] Change the Company Name : Phoenix Solutions
Going for the more 'aggressive' of the three (we're not picking Ursa Major as our sibling has an aggressive personality which I'll assume translates to their piloting style, so it's either Wolfhound for long term customization depending on what our sibling wants or we double down now on something to that. Double Revolvers with Trickshooter just sounds about right.
EDIT: Names!
[X] Keep Team as The Firebirds
[X] Change the Company Name : Nails and Duct Tape
[X] A PX-013 Jaguar
[X] Keep Team as The Firebirds
[X] Change the Company Name : Nails and Duct Tape
Has the best AC and we can raise it further with some modifications. When your a poor Company with little backing and as a result a tight repair budget, not getting damaged is important.
Badou is ironically a lot like I had hoped he'd be. Fast and an even better shot.
"The Arkon Brightswords continue their domination of Baryon IV's Planetary Circuit after a brutal victory in the Spring Cup. This hotshot new team is now at 10-0 after their last match."
"Imperial Third Princess Augusta Dorn has announced her intention to visit the Federation to compete in the special Charity Tournament in the Core Worlds in September. Many Federation Aces are chomping at the bit to take down the Empire's Shooting Star, who is forbidden to compete in the regular Galactic Championship."
"Federation legend Charles Reinhardt will retire this year after one last tournament run. The Dragon of Aetilus has bagged multiple galactic records in his mythical 23 years in the sport. His only son, Adrian, is expected to take his spot on his self-owned team, the Silver Cardinals."
A few days later, you find yourself back in your dad's - your - office, idly chewing on your thumb as you look over the Datapad's holographic screen.
The office, and the entire building for that matter, had been thoroughly cleaned by the Service Bots so that it would be livable again. Not that anyone besides you and Badou worked here, but all in due time.
The office had brand new shelves, a new connection port to the Interplanetary Network, cute pink curtains that you liked and your four beloved plush animals - Mr. and Mrs. Panda and their two children - sat on the couch. Oh, and an instant coffee machine. You were going to need it.
You glance back at the screen and squint.

Status:
Fame: 0
Reputation: 0
(Fame is the measure of how well known your team is in Mech Battle. It goes from 0 to 100. Higher fame makes it much easier to complete certain Diplomatic Actions and makes it more likely to get positive random events. Conversely high fame also makes it more likely you're going to be hit by negative events as jealous rivals try to sabotage you.)
(Reputation is how the Mech Battle community sees you. It can go from -100 to 100. High Positive Rep means that you are seen as a paragon team, incorruptible and always playing by the rules. This helps in some Diplomatic Actions and gives a demerit to some Intrigue Actions, as well as increasing the odds of you being approached by official Mech Battle staff for sponsorships and such. High Negative Rep means that you are seen as a problematic team, playing dirty and sometimes illegally to win. This does the opposite of High Positive, and gives higher odds of...more illegal parties contacting you.)
Facilities:
Administrators: 1/2
Pilots: 1/3
Mechs: 1/3
(Your facilities give you a hard cap on how many Admins, Pilots and Mechs you can hire/buy. Upgrade them by spending money in the shop.)
Trait:
True Freedom - Starts with better Mechs. All Tech Actions have lowered DCs by 5.

You sigh. Yup. Company was flat broke. No two ways about it. There's probably something you can do to get cash, but you also need to start getting your name out there, you need to fight matches, even if they were the most bottom-of-the-barrel ones.
You're interrupted in your thoughts by your brother's arrival. He had been doing a few rounds in his Jaguar, trying to get more of a feel for the machine, or so he says. He's still in his pilot suit, blonde hsir messier than usual after hours in a helmet.
"You look stressed." He greets you, before chucking a can of soda at your face.
You catch the can and grunt. "I am stressed. Lot of things to worry about."
Badou jumps onto the couch, carefully maneuvering as to not sit on your plushies. Ah, so he learned from last time. Good.
"Eh, you'll figure it out." he shrugs. "Would love a match, though. Watching those Brightswords got my ass going."
"Lewd." you deadpan.
He snorts. "Shut up, you know what I mean. I'm itching for a real fight. Haven't shot anything in weeks, my sublime talent might get rusty."
You smirk. "Alright, fine, Mister Sublime Talent. Let's see what we can do."

Curious to see what additional administrators and pilots will do, and taking a shot at it in the former.
..if it means we can do additional actions so that 'we' can focus on actual Tech stuff, the better. I hope.
