The Ask options are pretty interesting, but we need to know how to fight safely. The game settings have been bugging me. It would be very exasperating if she forgot about them despite being reminded.

"What'd he pick to start with? Your friend who picked Spiritualist," you add, just to be sure.

"Let me think…" The Boulder takes a long sip, looking out through the window. "Attack, Ice Claw, and uh… Mist? Yeah, that was it. He swapped in Flare for Attack, said something about not needing it anymore anyway."

"What do Ice Claw and Mist do?"

"Ice Claw does what it says on the tin, gives Pooh-bear claws made of ice."

"Pooh-bear?" Kaius interrupts. "Really?"

"Really." She grins. "His companion is a bear, he named it Winnie the Pooh. Anyway, the claws increase its attack. Mist forms an AoE field of mist generated by Pooh-bear that slowly recharges ally energy."

"There are healing spells, then." If Blue is the only Color that can heal anyone outside of a safe zone, like you're beginning to suspect, you imagine they're going to get pretty damn popular.

"Yep! Too bad they don't work in real life. How's your face?" The Boulder looks sympathetic.

"Could be worse. I'm not looking forward to explaining it at work tomorrow."

"Oof." She makes a face. "And then explaining it another six times, right?"

"Right." You look back down at your phone and remember you originally took it out to change your game settings. You tap on 'Settings' so at least the right screen is up. "What did you mean about him not needing Attack anymore? It seems pretty basic."

"Honestly, he didn't really explain it." The Boulder shrugs. "Something about it being a stop-gap until you can talk to your pet."

You're scrolling through the settings to find the Graphics section but that makes you look up. "He can talk to his companion?" You tried that. All it did was chime at you!

"I guess? Not from the beginning, though. He got kind of vague about it when I asked."

"Oh." That is an extremely useful piece of information… that you're not going to get. Damn. You turn your attention back to your phone. Graphics settings, there. It looks like default settings mean all the effects are on and all the indicators are off. Sounds… pretty, but not very useful. Which you have to admit matches your experience so far.

"That first one's like the opposite of Crippling Bolt," Kaius muses.

You realize you have no idea what they're talking about. Changing your graphics settings completely absorbed your attention and you missed who knows how much of the conversation. Oh well. You take your coffee cup away from your face long enough to take another sip, then hold it back up against your swelling nose.

"Makes sense, Orange and Green are opposites. Red does extra damage, Blue does damage recovery… I'm not so sure what Black does."

"I think it's smoke bombs and stuff. Being hard to hit?"

"Ninjas versus paladins?" you add in.

The Boulder laughs. "Hey yeah, I like that. Wasn't that highschool kid a ninja? It fit pretty well."

Kaius clears his throat. "So, this has been fun, thanks for the tea, but I gotta get going."

"Yeah, sure." The Boulder waved. "Keep in touch, we can swap weak point info later."

"See you later," you say with a wave of your own.

"Sounds good." Kaius picks up his tea and leaves without further discussion.

"So," the Boulder asks after a moment, "is Annabelle your real name?"

"No, I just liked the sound of it," you admit. "My real name's Katherine. People call me Kat."

"Ashley." She holds out her hand with a smile and you shake hands. "Nice to meet you, Kat. And to meet someone else playing the game who isn't still in school," she adds ruefully.

You laugh a bit, even though the action hurts your face. "Yeah, same."

Note on the current vote: I have the ON/OFF blocks separate because each option will be set either On or Off depending on which block it has the most votes under, rather than having to calculate by omission. So you don't need to include every option in one or the other block, just the ones you care about.

(Any graphics options that receive no votes either way, or that tie, will be left at the default.)
 
While I want to talk to Ashley some more, I'm hoping for some discussion about the setting so I can figure out what to vote for.

- [] Ally Area Effects - This was giving us trouble, but if we turn it off, do we not see the Mirage at all?
- [] Enemy Area Effects - It seems strange that we can turn this off.
- [] Area Effect Indicator - Maybe this only applies if we turn off the first 2 options?
- [] Ally Highlight - Is there any reason to turn this off?
- [] Enemy Highlight - Again, is there any reason to turn this off?
- [] Entity Shadows - I'm thinking that we should leave this on to be alerted of flying monsters above us.

@InspectorCaracal, can we get more description of what these options mean and what happens if we turn them off? For example, if we turn off Enemy Area Effects, do we not know when the enemy is using an area effect, or do we just see through it?

Sure! Here you go. She can guess most of these based on prior gaming experience.

Ally Area Effects - (On) View ally's AoE field special effects.

Enemy Area Effects - (On) View enemy's AoE field special effects.

Area Effect Indicator - (Off) Outlines the affected area of AoE fields and includes the AoE effect's name. Outline color will match Ability's color.

Ally Highlight - (Off) Add an outline to (and location circle beneath) any ally characters within range, which is viewable "through" obstructions.

Enemy Highlight - (Off) Add an outline to (and location circle beneath) any enemies within range, which is viewable "through" obstructions.

Entity Shadows - (On) Adds shadows underneath game objects and monsters.

Opaque Entities - (On) Makes game-generated graphical entities obscure real visuals. (This affects Area Effects, monsters, Beacon signs, character armor, and any other game graphics that aren't inherently transparent.)

Nearest Beacon Indicator - (Off) Puts a pointer on the screen to the nearest Beacon.

Beacon Boundary - (Off) Puts a faint rainbow-bubble-like dome over the location within the Beacon

Nearest Safe Zone Indicator - (Off) Puts a pointer on the screen to the nearest Safe Zone.

Safe Zone Boundary - (Off) Puts a transparent box around the Safe Zone in the color of whoever it belongs to.

I think we're ok as long as we turn Opaque Entities off so that we can see through the game effects. I'm voting to talk to Ashley in hopes that she can be a friend and team mate in the future. Also, Kaius seem to feel uncomfortable around Annabelle so let's ask Ashley for advice in the future instead.

Is anyone else a bit worried about how the Spiritualist's friend was talking to him somehow, and he didn't want to explain it? I'm a bit suspicious of how cheap the game was so I'm on the lookout for what the catch is.

I'm wondering if the Spiritualist and his companion are talking psychically, and that's why he didn't want to explain it. A theory of mine it is that the "game" is actually another world that players are interacting with, but I'm not sure what exactly the point would be.

I don't want to input any of my own opinions into the decision, but I believe the logic is "turn Opaque off so that we can see through the Mirage effects, but leave the effects on so we can still see what it is"

Not really. You could stay up until about 8am in the morning when you have to get ready for work (it's about 7pm-ish right now) but I wouldn't advise it.
