They are not accepting new employees. So I really doubt this will be the case. So yeah, most possibly this is that augment thing doing something.
 
Does Enkephalin normally do this?

I think this is probably something related to distortion detective right? Since, if I remembered right, there was a plot line related to Enkephalin in that.

Wait, did he actually say that it's just Enkephalin in a Word of God manner, or is it just implied through the story? Because I can't find it through search.

Then again, it wouldn't be too out of there if Enkephalin make you resonate with an Abnormality more than normal...

Kali managed to resonate with Prototype-Mimicry and manifested an early E.G.O that could work in tandem with it.

But she's also the goddamn Red Mist and is a massive outlier.

That and there were those E.G.O folks using the Fourth Match, and Bear Paws. (Not sure if there was a Hurting Teddy Bear one)

...Which is strange, since those guys should be stuck inside L-Corp. And the Seed Of Light hasn't gotten a chance to make sure everyone is connected with the well just yet for E.G.Os to manifest easily as it does with the Limbus group and that one dude who got turned into schadenfreude.

I guess we'll see eventually. Maybe she's related to them or something.

Or maybe the guys before did have the correct idea and that Maria would eventually become Queenie and get captured like a Pokemon by L-Corp.

We know from Wonderlab that alternate versions of Abnormalities exist that are called Abberations. For example there is the Aleph version of Fairy Festival called Titania.

While Ciel dismiss the *it's only Enkephalin* hypothesis, they also don't know the link between Enkephalin and abnormalities, I am more inclined to believe the guy who actually has the bear claws than the one who don't know what said bear claws represent.

The guys clearly weren't using EGO, they were becoming the abnormalities, not using external things, but having their body change.

Harry also clearly was happy Teddy bear, not hurting Teddy bear.
 
Also, I doubt anyone that isn't part of L-Corp is actually aware of Abnormalites...Or Cogito, admittedly, I don't believe cogito is a part of this but it is another 'wonder substance' that has something to do with abnormalities
 
Maybe it is a case that Enkephalin has to be refined before it can be used as a drug, so these guys got their hands on the unrefined stuff and got side effects.

Taking words from drug addicts isn't exactly viable either. Like, I won't expect Bug Man Gregor to be able to explain why he's growing an electric centipede from his arm, while he's in the middle of E.G.O corrosion. I'll ask Faust to explain it instead.

And it's not explicitly stated by Naron as you said in your original comment either. It's just something that we can make from the story based on surface-level thoughts.

But well, it doesn't really fit. Enkephalin would be mentioned more if it can actually do this kind of shit.

There are Enkephalin addicts all over the place, and if this is one of the side effects, I think it'd be much more known information.

This seems more in line with a post-Seed of Light Enkephalin overdose rather than a Pre Seed of Light one.

I'm personally more convinced that there are some shenanigans going on with the "workshop" that Maria got her "augments" from rather than it merely just being an Enkephalin overdose.

It is absolutely certain no one but the highest ranks at L-Corps (and by that I mean Angela, the manager, and the Sephira) knows about cogito, maybe the head, it is the true singularity of the company, you can bet they made sure nobody could even think of copying it.
 
It could also be EGO corrosion. As stated in Wonderlab Ep33, if an employee puts on L Corp's EGO which is above their level, it starts to assimilate them and seems to eventually transform them.

To toss out some theories if it is EGO corrosion, perhaps the local L Corp was raided and had EGO stolen, or maybe an employee or manager made shady dealings and sold EGO. Then, the EGO was given to people not ready for it, or it was tampered with, or something else went wrong which caused it to corrode people.
