Because duh. We only have 6 people and a dead spaceship full of unknowns that we will be poking in every hole trying to make some sense of it while on a time-table. That's usually not very safe. We can't afford to lose someone over a dumb mistake.

We want the ship on a stable orbit, yeah? At least that's the easiest way to prevent an impact. Sounds like it's this guy's job.

I'd also consider Sazama Ayuko (Data Retrieval Specialist) and maybe Helena Mikova (Communications Specialist) to try and establish contact from the spaceship (and have potential access to specialists from Earth), but there is only so much space in the roster.
