Prologue

I read way too much fanfiction before I died, so this must be my minds dying fever dream. I mean really? Must the story always begin with the main character dying a tragic death?

I mean really, it's a cliche at this point. I was walking out of the restaurant I was working at to get to my car, being let out early because I finished everything that was needed of me, and the boss man let me off.

In my pockets was my phone at 53% battery, my keys my wallet with my bank card, credit card, and 212 dollars in cash, along with a bag of tip money, uncounted.

A strange thing to remember, but I always make sure I had enough battery to call my mom, money to get some food on the way home if I ever needed it, and the tips I rightfully earn.

And one moment later, I was run over by a guy gunning it into the parking lot at 60 miles an hour.

I am going to admit this… I'm frightened by a lot of things. Hell the craziest thing I've done in my life was rappelling down a cliff with my boy scout troop when I was 14, and that was only a 50 foot wall and that was after my father told me that I would be missing out something amazing that will give me a memory that I will cherish forever.

That for the entire time, I would have control. And I liked being in control.

But things outside of my control always bit me in the ass.

It's amazing what the mind recalls as your life flashes before you face your imminent demise. I had read about how time seems to slow to a crawl but I never really imagined that time stood still.

Heh, learn something new even as I die. Go figure.

The car was all black, with its headlights off. The front license plate was AWR3412, on a New York Licence plate. I didn't know the make but it had the Mercedes logo on it. The driver was hidden behind blacked out windows so I could not make him out.

My body getting sent flying onto the pavement. But the car did not slow down, fear or something set in the driver. The first wheel crushed my ribs before I could even react turning my body forward. The second wheel went onto my neck and then there was a snap.

And that was how I died. Accomplishing nothing of note, except being a failure who was too afraid to live.

Hey… in death, you might as well be honest with yourself.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I awoke to a white void, devoid of everything, color, sight, sound, even smell. Now in my disoriented state, I didn't even notice, I just thought my mind was playing tricks on me. After all, I didn't really think I was dead of course. Hurt yes… but dead. Preposterous.

Unfortunately, my hopes that I was still alive were dashed almost immediately. "Ah. Your body has expired. We can finally discuss matters of importance."

The man appeared out of nowhere behind you. "What the hell?" I yelped, being frightened by the strange man. My disorientation disappeared as my heart began to race. "Who are you?"

The strange man was very stout with a round face and a long mustache on his upper lip that went down his mouth. The suit he wore was a business suit of some kind, with a long silk black tie. The man gave a small sigh. "I am a man who wishes to help you."

"Where am I?" I asked, starting to break down into sobs. My mind was confused, jumbled and broken to truly understand what was going on.

The man put a hand on my shoulder, and immediately, my mind cleared, my chest calmed and my heart slowed to a crawl.

The man nodded. "Are you calm now?"

You nodded. "What… What are you?"

The man nodded. "I go by many names… Many of them known to you my child."

My mind than clicked everything together and I bowed, falling to my knees. "Oh, Lord." The wonders of reading and listening to the bible.

The man… God or whatever he was given a laugh. "Oh get up boy. I'm not sending you to hell. And I prefer the Presence to my... other names."

I stood up and faced the man… ah, my brain was still confused. "What am I doing here? You said I'm dead. Shouldn't I be in Heaven or Purgatory… or Hell." My head dropped low, and I looked to the white void where my feet were.

"I am not here to judge your life to the gates of Saint Peters. Not yet at least, for your time has not come." He stated.

"But you said I'm dead." I stated.

"You are correct." He replied. "But your time has not come. You live with regret in your heart, having done nothing to sooth it. You desire to help people, but never could."

The words hurt me in more ways than I thought possible. "I… I-" I began to weep.

"It's alright child." The Presence's voice was a soothing sound in my mind. "You will be given a chance to fulfill that wish you desire."

"I-I…" I stammered the words out like a babbling newborn. "Thank you." the whisper I gave was near mute.

My face was moved up, my eyes looking at Him. His hand wiped the tears from my eyes with a gentle motion of his thumb. "I grant you this wish because whatever doubts and fears you hold in your heart is surpassed by your true bravery."

My body began to fade away, from my feet upward.

"It shall not be easy, and you will face pain that is beyond your imagination. But keep your heart open, and your will strong. You won't be alone." The Presence replied.

Before I faded entirely away, The Presence snapped his fingers and I stopped fading, stuck in some kind of limbo. "I forgot to tell you this. Please do not be angry about the two gentleman you will meet soon. Their the best I have on such short notice.

And in my death, I awoke reborn.

AN: Enjoy.

Dammit, First Person is very hard to write.

Edit: So... Here is an idea that has been digging into my head since I rewatched all of Young Justice a few weeks ago. Hopefully, you will all enjoy it.

Um.. Can I have some feedback please? I've never really done the first person before, only second person and third.

The first person seems fine though I dislike the whole Rob thing, even if the presence is a character lore wise.

Truthfully, I just didn't really know how else to get it started without BROB, so I decided to use the more powerful characters in DC to make it at least lore friendly.

Meeting the Presence and presumably given power by it, will likely have a mega impact on this character's Attitude, Values and Beliefs. Given he went from "who the fuck is this" to "Oh lord." , my question is he going to become a fanatic Christian Superhero?

As someone who was raised Christian and this being an SI... no, and I am saying that more to make sure this doesn't lead to any questions of... well certain important political topics that shall not be named and that will not be brought up because this is a superhero story, not political commentary disguised as a superhero story. (A few marvel comics over the last two years gave me that taste in my mouth.)

I am by no means a fanatic, nor will the MC become a fanatic because of this event.

our MC, like myself, is a deeply flawed, cowardly, socially awkward and fearful of the world and all of its uncertainty... Among a lot of other issues. Becoming a hero is his way of both paying back the second chance and gift of powers he has been given by The Presence, but also to grow and become the person everyone knows he can become.

I also have a very unique situation and powers (I hope) that will be... interesting to say the least.

Edit: That is all i will say on the subject.

Probably not. I mean, can you name one SI or Isekai that has actually become religious after meeting an honest to god celestial entity?

Um, I'm already religious so does that count?

Not really. Unless your SI is going to suddenly start worshipping the Presense, the Endless and w.e that old guy behind the Source Wall is.

I'm mostly talking about all the SIs/isekais that end up in settings like Danmachi, HSDxD, Marvel or, like this one, DC. Despite suddenly finding out that higher powers do actually exist and, in some cases, are within walking distance, none of these characters ever seem to have a crisis of faith or even touch on the subject.

Point. But things are... going to be interesting. Hopefully.

Fair enough. I wasn't disparaging you and I generally treat SI and their Writers separately.
I mean my comment as the most lighthearted query.

Sounds like you have a solid handle on this.

I can't help wondering whether the specifics here are just indicating how clearly the SI experienced their demise or are also a reference to something?

That old anti-Vexmaster one.

I also don't like robs

I would recommend like literally anything to make this fic stand out. If that was a story with a religiously informed protag that might be interesting
Well I'm sorry that I chose to start with a Rob instead of just making him meet god and get a second chance to live a new life.

But I do have an idea to make this stand out. At least in the powers department.

Actually I was almost run over by a similar car a few months ago. I just changed the license plate location and made up a random plate.

The thing is you don't actually need to explain it. ROBs are inherently ridiculous and everyone just sort of ignores them. We've all agreed to just accept them as a thing even though no one likes them. You could have just been hit by a car, and then woke up, or just told us 'then I woke up'

leave it up to a first-time self-insert writer to fuck it all up.:(

Don't worry too much about it. What I'd recommend is that you actually start your stories with a bit more content than just this. The first on e or two chapters is really when people get attached to characters or hooked to specific plot ideas when it comes to fanfics. I mean, I watched Young Justice (first season and a half or so), and read a bunch of fanfics, so seeing a fanfic with it, what I'd like to see would be an interesting take on the story, any way you want to make that happen.

So far, going by the prologue (and not taking into account the title), I wouldn't even know what this story is about. The prologue should introduce the main character and do some basic world building, that is really why I don't like ROBs, people just write about them in a full chapter, and then drop the story. At that point, I really consider the "story" nothing but spam.

I'd recommend you just post your second chapter into the prologue instead from the moment of the car crash by starting with "And then I woke up..." and delete everything else after it.

That is basically how I read ROB starts, I skip/skim over them and go to the meat of it... though there isn't any here yet :)

"And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness."- Book of Genesis 1:4

June 9, 2010

I awoke on a park bench, my head hurt as my eyes fluttered open. The pain was there for a moment and my hand covered my eyes to block out the light. Sitting up I tried to gain my bearings but couldn't. My mind was still… jumbled. I could feel things that I couldn't really describe.

Looking around, I saw that I was indeed in a park. A very large park for the matter… a large park with a giant obelisk in the skyline. Along with a dome recognizable the world over.

I was in Washington D.C, the capital of the good ole USA, in the national mall, laying… or rather sitting on a park bench.

The sun was up in the sky, almost noon if I had to guess. Lunchtime.

I just… sat on the bench holding my head.

Okay… I'm in D.C… thankfully, not the strangest or worst place to wake up in. I was still in the United States, where I at least knew the language, could hopefully access my bank account, and… hopefully, find a way to get home.

Yeah… getting home seems like a good idea.

I checked my pockets to pull out my cell phone, hoping that it was still there. But I felt something else pressed up against my phone. Pulling it out with it, I saw a United States passport… my passport. Opening it out of curiosity, I realized it was indeed my passport, with all the stamps from my families vacations to Mexico, Canada, and southern Europe. Everything about me was still the same… Except that according to my passport… I'm 5'9.

I am short, barely 5'6 on a good day. Being three inches taller meant I was as tall as my dad. And it felt strange to feel so tall.

I put my passport away and opened my phone. The date on my phone was June 9th, though the year was oddly absent from it. Opening my contact list, everyone was still there, my parents, my brothers, my grandparents. All their contacts and phone numbers were still there.

Pressing my mom's number, I hoped that she would answer, and I could hear her talk to me.

The phone rang, and I received a notice from a robotic voice. "Hello, the number you are calling is not connected to any phone in service, please try again or call 1-800-."

I hung up the phone and tried again, this time with my dad's phone. I received the same message.

I tried again, and again, every time being met with the same robotic message.

And then it struck me like the car that sent me to this world.

I was alone.

I stood up and walked in a daze across the national mall. The summer heat was dry, unlike the last time I was in the nation's capital, which was hot, humid and wet from summer rains.

The Capital was beautiful, even more, beautiful than the last time I was there. Gone was the trash that littered the streets, and the seemingly endless crowds of people that clogged everything. It seemed like everyone was gone, indoors or otherwise, carrying about their business away from the Mall. It was surreal, seeing the place so empty. but I had neither the will or want to see the city, or any of the great monuments that gave it such beauty.

I just walked aimlessly, trying to not break down into tears.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I did not know how long I walked, but my aimless walking led me to St. Mathew's cathedral. The red brick building and dome was not something I was accustomed to. Most churches I went to were just… buildings. They were not symbols of faith, built with brick, mortar, stone, and marble.

But I needed the comfort of the Lord, at least for a moment so I could calm my mind, and figure out what to do next.

And like the rest of the Mall, the cathedral was quiet. There were not many tourists or members of the faithful here today.

Just me, a few people praying, and a monk or priest tidying up the place.

I sat down on one of the long benches for a moment, trying to just remain calm before falling down onto my knees and praying to God.

"Do you think he's calm enough to notice our presence now?" A voice spoke.

I turned my head around and wondered where the voice came from. "Hello?" I whispered, trying to find the source of the voice.

"He is, but he's still frightened." Another gentler voice spoke.

"Who are you?" I asked, weighing my options and wondering if I was going insane due to the events of the last few hours.

"No your not going insane… but you are… well, special." The first voice spoke. "Now, please let us out."

Let them out? "What do you mean by that?"

"Focus on two people talking to you. And we should be there." The second voice replied. "Stop being so anxious."

What the. Okay. Close my eyes and than…

I opened them to see two people standing in the row in front of me.

The first one was a man that I could only describe as a Prussian cosplayer with red eyes. He had a long flowing black coat that draped over his body, with golden leaves on them, like a colonel. The red uniform and black pants he wore looked like they were part of an officers uniform… or at the very least a cadets uniform. His hat was… well, I didn't know how to describe his hat, an officer's one with a golden skull on it. His black hair was a mess hiding under his hat His red eyes also looked… mischievous, cunning, like he was planning something. To his side, there was a katana that his hand rested on.

The other man looked like the exact opposite of the first man. Between golden hair, striking, almost falcon like blue eyes, that looked more… driven than mischievous. The second man also had a white jacket, a black tank top, and white gloves, and instead of uniform pants, he wore blue jeans. To his side was a long sword with emeralds in the hilt.

However, both had one very distinct feature. Both had wings. The first one had black wings that were outstretched like a bird, while the second man was folded in, only showing just a little bit of his feathers over his back.

Angels… They were angels.

"Well now… that wasn't so hard." the black wearing one spoke. "Though I wish you brought us out in place less dreary, and more lively."

"He needed a place that comforted him. This place seems as good as any." The one wearing white replied. "Though I wish there was a bit more light so I could see better."

"Uh." I whimpered.

The one wearing black than snapped his fingers. "Ah I forgot, introductions are in order. The dreary boring one over there is Light, and I am Dark. We are your… well for a lack of a better term, the angel and devil on your shoulders."

I paled.

"Too much to take in?" Dark asked. "Oh trust me it will get better once you calm down and we can... are you alright?"

I did the only sane thing a person in my situation would do. I began to lose consciousness.

"What a wimp." Dark quipped, and I lost consciousness.

AN: Enjoy.

I actually don't think the intro is bad. While the car crash part is slightly cliche, with a lot of other SI fanfiction, you get things like either no explanation for how the person got there, CYOA memes, or a ROB who sent a person to the universe out of boredom and/or sadism.

Personally, I think the SI transportation process can be done well, it's just tricky to do. There are only so many ways to explain getting to a universe, at least at present, so a lot of them have become SI cliches. For what it's worth, I like the reasoning for how your character got sent to the DC universe; all it needed was maybe a hint or foreshadowing of what power your character had or what shenanigans he'd be getting in to.

Yeah. kinda why I split up the prologue.
