The barbarians are at the gates. Treachery most foul has left the great city of Merovis open to invasion, and invade they have.

Homes burn and civilians flee in panic as the black-clad legion of Reim advances into the city.

Brave defenders are butchered and their bodies ground beneath iron boots, as the Royal Palace is breached.

The court magisters work in hurried desperation as their king stands guard with his most loyal knights.

The door shudders, buckles, shatters, and the final words of the Working are nearly fumbled.

The knights fall.

The king falls.

The swords fall.

The magisters fall.

And the Veil falls, obscuring all.

The Hidden Crown Protocol is now in effect.

Long live the King.

The Faceless Veil, a mystic Working originally devised to throw enemy forces into disarray, and later adapted into a defensive failsafe in case of hostile conquest.
A mental interference effect, obstructing the afflicted's ability to distinguish and recognize individuals, thus rendering chains of command impossible and sewing paranoia and distrust.
The people of Merovin, taught from youth the proper procedures for operating under the effect, hold a distinct advantage. After all, anonymity is an insurgency's best friend.

Welcome, Rules, & Player List
Hello, and welcome to A Game of Crowns, a mafia game for 15-17 people (though I can probably adjust that up a bit if we have a ton of sign-ups).

The Rules are as follows:

  • All roles will be randomly assigned.
  • The game will be separated into Day and Night phases. Day phases begin at 7:00 AM PDT (UTC -7) on Sunday, and end at the same time Thursday. Night Phases begin at 9:00 AM Thursday and end 5:00 AM Sunday.
  • Always always always post at least once per Day Phase! It'd be nice if you did it once every 24 hours.
  • Conversely, never post during night phases, with the exception that you may post at night if entitled to a final lynch post. Failing that, don't, with allowances for posts consisting purely of announcements that it is night so other players know not to post (such as if the GMs missed the day's end)
  • Lynches happen at the end of the Day phase, whereupon the player with the most votes is lynched. Ties will be resolved by mystery methods, though I assure you it is not likely to be advantageous to town to cause one.
  • When you vote for someone, vote for them by like so: [x] Lynch [player name]. To rescind your vote, vote [x] Null.
  • Do not write illegible, hidden, or coded messages. Invisitext isn't as cute as you think it is.
  • DO NOT DISCUSS THE GAME WITH OTHER PLAYERS OUTSIDE THIS THREAD. Only talk to another player elsewhere if there is something in your role that allows it. If you're talking elsewhere, impersonating other players is not allowed.
  • DO NOT EDIT YOUR POSTS. If you gotta fix something, doublepost.
  • DO NOT QUOTE YOUR ROLE PM. If you must refer to it, paraphrase.
  • When you die, you stop posting. The only exception is if you are lynched, in which case you get one final post.
  • @Pawn Lelouch is the Assistant GM. If he tells you to behave, listen.
  • If you've got a question, or you're confused about something, ask us.
  • Finally, do not act against the spirit of the game. This is a nebulous term, but includes such things as "Taking your ball and going home". Always keep fighting for yourself, always be trying to win. Don't give up, basically.
  • If you want to know more about Mafia, our Megathread has a number of useful posts.

Dawn of the First Day
The invading forces descend into chaos within minutes. The loss of chain of command, the inability to distinguish friend and foe, and a few inciting comments from the locals all combine to turn the disciplined army into an unruly mob. A very upset unruly mob, carrying a lot of sharp objects.

Some make their way forward to the front of the crowd, seeking to restore order, or exploit the herd mentality of the crowd, or perhaps simply escape the throng before they got stabbed somewhere important. Regardless of motivation, seventeen people find themselves the target of the majority of attention, faced with demands for a course of action and someone to blame.

It's quite clear from the tone of the shouting that any scapegoat chosen will meet an untimely end in short order.

Day 1 has begun. Day ends at:

Dusk of the First Day
As the sun sets, the focus of most is on one person, and patience finally wears thin. The soldiers advance upon the man, who manages one last, spiteful statement before a blade bites into his neck.

When the crowd draws back, the brutalized corpse of @-Rosen is revealed, the Veil having fallen away with his death. Nigel was one of the palace scribes, responsible for record keeping and correspondence. While native to the Kingdom of Merovin, his death does not bring down the Veil, and the crowd simmers in disgruntlement before dispersing through the palace for the night. No-one trusts anyone else enough to let them stand watch alone, but the general sentiment is that that nobody can be allowed out of the palace, lest the person they need slip away.

Night 1 begins. Night ends at:

Dawn of the Second Day
The day begins with the discovery of a new corpse.

@QTesseract is found within his quarters, a pulped mass of blood, bone shards, and grey matter where his skull used to be. Examination of his clothing and effects reveals him to be another Kingdom native: The castle gamekeeper, Old Basset.

The Veil remains though, and even a layman's understanding of magic is enough to know that a working of that scale has to be anchored to something. Or more accurately, someone. And thus, the mass of people congregates once more, in search of the linchpin hidden in their midst.

Day 2 begins. Day ends at:

Dusk of the Second Day
The day draws to an end, and the crowd murmurs ominously, closing in on their chosen victim. When it becomes apparent that Lysander Roth will not be leaving alive, he sighs and straightens his suit, saying his final piece.

Then he explodes.

The form of the aged butler is torn to shreds as another figure erupts from within the suit of skin, throwing itself at the crowd and burrowing into their ranks like an arrow into a wound. All anyone can glimpse are flashes of claws and fangs and sun-bronzed muscle as the monster rips its way through the ranks of the soldiers, before eventually dropping from the dozens of wounds it sustained during its rampage.

Cautiously, the corpse is approached and examined. They prove to be one of the half-beast savages from the far south, which would normally raise questions as to "what the fuck is it doing here?", but the sigil of the Bloodletter Brotherhood etched into its flesh answers that question quite handily. It seems somebody left an assassin running around without calling them off.

Night 2 begins. Night ends at:

Dawn of the Third Day
The new corpse is discovered shortly after dawn. Despite the shattered jaw and pulverized rib cage, it is still identifiable as that of Captain Orton Vastare, head of the castle guard. Quite certainly a loyalist of the Kingdom of Merovin, but sadly not who many in the crowd are seeking.

The crowd gathers again, though this time in the feasting hall rather than the throne room. They're still finding bits of people in the corners of yesterday's meeting place, and stepping on someone's eyeball is almost as unpleasant as stepping in manure.

Day 3 begins. Day ends at:

Dusk of the Third Day
The crowd advances on @Happerry , who draws his ceremonial saber and makes a valiant attempt at defending himself, despite the fact that A) the blade is nearly blunt, and B) he clearly isn't familiar with using the thing. Still, he manages to draw blood off one of his attackers before going down, which is impressive given most of them are wearing armor of some kind.

The Veil's effects fade from the corpse, revealing the face of one Jason Von Vorhees, minor noble of the Kingdom of Merovin. Not the hoped-for silver bolt, though, and so the crowd disperses in displeasure for the night.

Night 3 begins. Night ends at:

Dawn of the Fourth Day
The first corpse of the day is that of @Absum , found folded in half on the floor of the hallway outside her quarters. While Dame Margaret Dewalt was once a knight of the Kingdom of Merovin, she had spent the last few years acting as a physician, which would perhaps have proved useful in identifying the cause of death for the score of Reiman soldiers who seem to have simply gone to sleep and never woken back up.

As it is, hints of desperation start to tinge the crowd as they search for their next target.

Day 4 begins. Day ends at:

Dusk of the Fourth Day
The crowd swarms @BanTheFairyKing with blades drawn. When they withdraw from their bloody work, the corpse revealed is that of a mere messenger boy of the Kingdom of Merovin. Alas, poor Kevin.

More than a few curses are heard, as the crowd filters away for the evening.
