A Dungeon in Xianxia

I've seen the combination before. The similarities between the two genres mean there are multiple points to attempt the fusion, for example based on levels=cultivation stages or dantian=dungeon. However, it mostly popped up in forgettable fics where the xianxia ethos contaminated and ruined anything positive about the setting, often by playing up the murder-hobo aspect of adventuring.

What you've got so far is in the running for my third favorite xianxia fic, and considerably lower on my dungeon fic ranking.

Everything posted so far has been riveting! Can't wait for more. It's really nice to see what feels like a mix of eastern and western fantasy.

Chapter 8: Diggy Diggy Hole
AN: This was the last bit of prewritten content so the next chapter will definitely take a few more days to get pumped out. Still, look forward to that and enjoy the chapter!

Moving on to the ant tunnels, I took a look at what progress has been made, and I can't help but be disappointed. Despite there being almost a dozen worker ants, they've barely made any progress. What's going on, leader ant?

Oh. I didn't think you would actually respond.

The leader sent me a bunch of sounds, scents, and images that took me a few minutes to decipher. The gist of it is that they don't have anywhere to take the excess dirt, since they can't move it to the surface without getting caught or creating a giant ant hill. The only reason they even got this far was that they were packing the dirt into the walls to make room.

Smart. Good job leader ant. Hmm, I should come up with a name for you. But right now I have a tunnel system to hurry along. Commanding the workers to get out of the way, I activate the destruction aspect of my management skill. It was surprisingly easy. I just had to aim at the dirt poof, it's gone, replaced by nothing but the mana I used to claim it in the first place.

The first order of business is making them a storage room and making these tunnels big enough so two workers can at least stand side by side. I have to pour in a ton of mana to get it to the right size since I haven't claimed that deep down yet but by the end, I have a large ten-foot wide square, I'm calling the trash room with a twenty-foot-long tunnel extending all the way towards the well. I wanted to make them bigger but… that's apparently my limit width wise. For now at least. I know for a fact that dungeons can get ridiculously huge. I'm pretty sure I just need to get more floors until I can do that. Which I guess means I'll have to rely on my monsters if I want to get bigger than that.

Besides that there's still the issue of height. As I've said before, I've been focusing on claiming the surface so I couldn't actually dig that deep. As such, the room was only two feet tall. Poor lesser ant was forced to crouch just to fit inside and the tunnel was only tall enough for the worker ants to get in. It's only a temporary problem, though. I'll make sure to extend the height as soon as I can.

The nice thing though, is that since this is all underground, I don't have to bother keeping my mana in the walls. Which made the whole claiming process much faster just by having more surface area to work with at a time. … And it was apparently a requirement to create my first floor because the moment my mana filled the entire area I got a notification.

[You have created your first underground floor!]

[You have gained the dungeon management skill, reinforce!]

I mean, I wouldn't exactly call it a "floor" but I'll take it. Skill sounds nice either way, but I'll save it for later. Ground stability is practically the opposite of what I want right now.

Hey Leady… no, that's a terrible name. Lady? I'm pretty sure ant drones are all boys. Antburt? Maybe, doesn't sound quite right, though. Whatever, I'm still workshopping it. Leader ant, get half of the workers digging down to your old colony. I want to evolve your queen and I get the feeling I'll need a lot of space to do it. For the other half, have them dig a hole down from the well. Stop where the water starts. Wormy is already there making tunnels if you aren't sure how far down that is.

Bless Wormy's five little hearts. Helping me spread my mana one coin-sized hole at a time.

Besides that, just do whatever you think is the best, leader.

As for me? I'm going to be making some slimes for the trash room. Why? Because they're the perfect trash disposal system! I don't want to be constantly destroying excess dirt for the ants. This way the workers can make their tunnels, thereby giving me more surface area to claim, and the slimes can deal with the dirt. All without the surface getting involved! Until the slimes get too big, I guess, but they're pretty squishable so it should be fine.

Creating another strange mana formation, albeit much simpler than the rat one from before, I watched as a foot-sized blob of green goop appeared in the trash room. The only thing keeping the blob standing was a small crystal orb floating in the middle of it. The little slime was just laying there, not doing anything. Not that I expected it to. Normal slimes are mindless level-one mobs that would be essentially useless if not for their valuable mana crystals. But that only applies to normal slimes. I've killed slimes that were nearly immune to damage in my previous life. So I'm excited to see my evolution options.

[Greater Slime: A big and acidic slime. Cost: Very Low]
[Fire Slime: A slime that gained the fire affinity. Cost: Very Low]
[Water Slime: A water affinity slime. Cost: Very Low]
[Earth Slime: A earth affinity slime. Cost: Very Low]
[Air Slime: A air affinity slime. Cost: Very Low]
[Light Slime: A light affinity slime. Cost: Very Low]
[Dark Slime: A dark affinity slime. Cost: Very Low]

That... I'm pretty sure those are all just level-five slimes. I mean, water slimes are pretty interesting. They're more liquid than slime, so their defenses are really low, but they can effectively drown people with a surprise attack. That could be useful. As for the rest... light slimes might be able to blind the bandits with a flash of light? It's not very bright though... Dang, I was kind of hoping I'd get better options. Still, I can work with this.

Choosing the greater slime option, I watched as the slime rapidly expanded to almost three times its size. Its mana crystal barely changed. I'm pretty sure it's two and a half feet tall, but I can't tell, it's currently being squeezed by the ceiling. I think I should be able to make two, maybe three, more, though. But I'll just go with two. I don't want to take up the lesser ant's corner. Quickly summoning and evolving two more greater slimes, the three of them took up more than half of the room.

...I think I'm going to need to expand this place sooner than I thought.

I wish I could claim faster, that would make everything so much easier. But besides making more worker ants, which I am doing, I'm not left with many options. Maybe lesser worms would help? Their tunnels aren't very big, but it'd be something. Might as well. Evolving five more worms and a few more worker ants, bringing that number up to ten, I order them to start digging.

Now, what should I do next? I can't dig out those pits, yet, can't evolve more monsters for at least a couple of hours... oh! There are still a few buildings I haven't claimed. I should get to that. I've reached what I'm pretty sure are the camp's walls on all sides, so I could claim those as well. Hmm... I'll focus on the buildings for now.

So much to do and so little time.

Ant drones are male, and only exist to make whoopee. Worker ants are all sterile females, more or less. Ants aren't precisely sexually dimorphic due to caste phenotype expression and wide diversity of class phyla. And don't get me started on some of the weirder forms of reproductive cycles they can have.

(The yellow electric ant only has mom and dad ants for the sterile worker and soldier castes, which have no functional sexual organs to be either male or female. The drones are all clones of their fathers thanks to something called "parasitic insemination" -- the DNA of the father wipes out all trace of the mother at moment of conception; and the fertile queens are all clones of their mothers thanks to parthenogenesis -- spontaneous conception, no male involved. That's just one example. There can be multiple queens per colony, and workers will sometimes accidentally migrate from one colony to another -- there are even cases known where a colony had no queens at all and was populated entirely by migrant workers from neighboring colonies.)

When they entered the building I looked through my rat's eyes and saw a bunch of unwashed bandits carrying a wooden chest which they immediately threw on the ground, spilling it open and revealing the gold weapons inside.
"the gold weapons inside" -> "the gold and the weapons inside"? Probably?
Sounds like a certain village princess might be a tempting, and very willing, target to make a contract with?

Chapter 9: How's Does Mana
AN: Sorry this took a while. It's been hard to find time to write between college and work. Anyways, I've been going back and changing certain details to make the system more consistent. The biggest thing I changed is that rooms made with destruction have a size limit so Ray can't just turn the entire camp into a pit, just most of it. Like always, tell me about any errors you spot, and enjoy the chapter.

edit: whoops, forgot to threadmark the chapter.

Alright, the last three buildings have been claimed! Took almost eight hours, but, hey, at least that's faster than before, right? The buildings were a second barrack that looked like it was being used as extra storage, an armory/blacksmithing area, and a treasure room. Of the three, the last was the most interesting. Between all the gold coins and shiny knickknacks, there was a dagger that was, apparently, enchanted. I say this apparently because I must've broken the enchantment when claiming it. I only realized it was special after getting a weird flood of information from it.

When I claimed the dagger I learned it was made of something called Black Iron and was crafted by "drawing out the fundamental properties of Metal and infusing the seed of Blades". Which kind of sounds more like alchemy than enchanting to me, but I was never much of a crafter, so what do I know? Personally, I'd rather just etch a rune, since I'm fluent in Ancient, but to each their own. I'm sure there's some advantage to doing it their way. I'm just not seeing it. Besides that info dump, I also got one more thing from claiming the dagger.

[You have gained the dungeon management skill, rewards!]

Yep, I can set drop rates on my monsters now and even spawn treasure chests! Obviously, I'm not going to right now since the only invaders I have are bandits and I don't want to give them anything but I should be able to make something for Yīng Yì now. Plus, it'll be a good bargaining chip after this whole situation is dealt with.

Speaking of, I think I might be able to go on the attack soon. Maybe even tonight. Honestly, it's amazing what you can do with mana to spare and a legion of monsters under your command. While barely paying attention, I've managed to claim almost ten feet of earth across the entire camp with the help of the tunnels, and I've even claimed a full twenty feet down around the well. It wasn't too hard either. I just kept evolving a bunch of ants into workers, making the occasional slime rooms, and did some slight reinforcement so that the (already well-supported) tunnels didn't collapse and give away our whole operation.

Honestly, the only real problem I ran into was that all the monsters I'm making are starting to cut into my mana regen. Yeah, turns out they have a daily mana upkeep cost since they don't have food. Well, the ants do; the slimes seem to be surviving off of the dirt pretty well.

Let's see, what else have I been doing… I've been watching the bandits run around like headless chickens all night trying to find a traitor that doesn't exist. It was actually pretty funny watching them accuse each other, convinced that they knew who was the culprit. Surprisingly, though, none of them even approached the jail to question Bao Lin or Yīng Yì. They must really fear that Fan Jian guy. Which makes sense, they probably don't want to get turned into exp. Or blood in this case.

Whatever the reason, I'm just happy they left them alone so Bao Lin could work on her magic. I'm pretty sure she was up until two in the morning doing exactly that based on when the itch of getting my mana stolen stopped. Let's see what she's cooked up!

Immediately taking my consciousness back to the cell, I- enter the walls and hit a void. What the- All of the mana I poured into the room is missing! Did Bao Lin seriously use all of it? How did I not notice that? Pouring mana into the room, I caught the last bit of a conversation.

"-amazing, Bao Lin. I can almost feel my meridians realigning."

"I'm so glad… does that mean that you-?!" She yelped.

"My Lady?!"

She waved him down. "It's nothing. The spirit just surprised me again." Looking up, she greeted me. "Welcome back, Mister Ray Wood."

Yeah, yeah, it's me. How the hell did you use up all of the mana in the room? There were like ten mage pools worth of mana in here!

She bowed her head. "My apologies. I simply couldn't stop absorbing mana once I started. It just felt so natural."

Right... Well, what did you do with it?

"Pardon?"

Your spell! I assume you made one. So tell me about it! What does it do?

She looked over at Yīng Yì with hesitation before explaining. "It's a meridian healing technique. I was using it to heal Yīng Yì's internal cultivation."

I didn't think it would be that easy to fix.

"It shouldn't be. It's supposed to be impossible!"

Alright. Is that all then?

"What- You- Do you not understand how incredible this is?"

Not really. It just seems like a high-level healing spell to me. I mean, if you want to talk about it, we can. I do know a little bit of magic theory, but that should wait until the, y'know, bandits are dealt with.

"I... yes... you're right."

So can he use his qi now?

She passed on the question and Yīng Yì shook his head. "Not yet. At this rate… it would take a year to fully recover. Longer still before I could begin cultivating again."

"I just need more mana and you could be healed even sooner. Then you could get us out of here."

"My Lady..." He trailed off, clearly doubtful of that claim.

We probably shouldn't put all our eggs into one basket Bao Lin. I mean, I'll support you as much as I can with mana, but I need as much of it as I can get to get us out of here.

Bao Lin looked like she wanted to argue for a moment before huddling up. "...Very well."

Uh, yeah. Anyways, tell Yīng Yì I found out how to make weapons so I can just spawn him one when we're ready to break out. Should be a magical one too.

"Truly? That's incredible." She paused before continuing. "I didn't know spirit buildings could do that."

I'm a pretty special building.

There was a moment of silence.

So... do you have any questions about mana before I go back to digging?

Bao Lin almost immediately perked up. "Yes! What is mana? How does it work? Where did it come from? I have so many things I want to know!"

Yīng Yì looked up as well. "I've been wondering the same thing actually, Mister Ray Wood. It feels so different from qi when My Lady was healing me. Like pure emotion."

That's not far off, actually. Mana is essentially the power of the mind. It's chaotic, hard to control, and can do pretty much anything if you have enough of it and can convince it to do what you want.

"Convince?"

It's a whole thing I don't really feel like getting into right now. Long story short, you have to convince mana that it's not just energy. Not too hard since it's super sensitive to intent, but it's something that gets harder the more mana you're dealing with. Plus, if you want really strong spells, you have to combine that with stuff that carries a lot of meaning and magical foci. Make sense?

"I... believe so?"

We can talk more about it later. I got things to do if you guys want to get out of here by tomorrow.

Bao Lin froze. "So soon?"

Yep. So work on your spell some more! Give it a name and stuff. It would make things much easier if Yīng Yì was at full strength!

Snapping away before she could respond, I go back to digging and claiming. Like always. Honestly, who knew my life in a second different world would be so boring?

This seems fun. Wonder if the previous worlds will come into play? Also, I can see the Cursed being adopted by The First Witch as a 'My People Need Me.' situation. It sounds like mana deprivation leads to death here.

not a fan of how special he makes mana as a seperate energy on a world where people evolve to use QI and the immediatly finds someone who can use it feels pretty contrived .

I'd say the best thing for the dungeon is to make nothing of use to Cultivators. The further those blights on civilization are from the dungeon the better.

This story is amazing!
Your grammer is really good, the chapters are quite long and the plot so far is really entertaining.
