Y'all realise that you need to play a pretty intense game of stepping stones before you can even think about opening the hatch, right?

*shrugs* When yer votes keep getting passed up not much you can do yanno? I mean, I could argue that yanno, not all our foes are Darkness-based and there might be some problems if we just give the silver mote to the big light ball but we're also running around blind and apparently this crowd doesn't even wanna TRY to focus on the fact that the ball is talking to us. Assuming that's the ball and not something else.

"Some of them get close enough to one another that you think you could easily step from one to the next, though that bears the risk of slipping and falling to the ground"

This may be on me. I didn't get the impression from the above that this was so much a difficult feat of athletics, as it was a matter of waiting out the timing until we took each (individually safe) step.

If, rather than trying to go fast, we grabbed onto each one carefully, would it be possible to take our time and wring the jeopardy out of it? The Light being insistent about heading towards that hatch makes me want to do it.

You tell the voice that you are a Lightbearer, and not a monster at all. After a few moments, which you spend carefully climbing over the railing, preparing to step onto the next passing sphere, it replies. "What's a Lightbearer? I don't think you're a monster anymore, none of the monsters ever spoke, and they didn't bring lights either. Mummy said she'd send someone to help, is that you?"

Once you figure out the timing, it's surprisingly simple to step from one sphere to the next. Before long, you're stepping onto the central orb, and the voice speaks up again: "That was a long time ago... But Mummy wouldn't have forgotten, my Mummy never forgot anything!"

Carefully, mindful of the curve of the sphere you're now standing on, you shuffle over to the hatch. It is heavy, and moves slowly as you lift, your light shining down into the dark. The air inside is stale, and curled up at the bottom, in a pile of ruined blankets, is the skeleton of a child.

"First, I got really hungry, but I was so scared of the monsters that I didn't dare leave." You hear the voice of the child behind you, and turn to see her standing next to you, her form a translucent, shimmering blue. "I got really cold and tired after, so I made a pile of blankets to sleep in. Can we go and find Mummy now? I miss her a lot." The Lost Child reaches a hand out towards you, and the silver mote pulses gently with light.

What do you do?

[X] Reach out with your hand
-[X] "Would you like to come with me? Let's go look for Mummy"

A little change because not sure exactly what age these children are, feels like 6, maybe 7?

15 - And I Bid Farewell to the Night in all it's Glory
[X] Reach out with your own hand
-[X] "Let's go look for her."

You reach out your hand, and tell her you'll look for her together, and she smiles. "You'll keep me safe from the monsters, right?"

Nodding, you say you will, and The Lost Child takes your hand. As she does, her irridescent blue form shatters into fragments, coalescing into a small blue mote of light. "I can help you find my mummy as well. I'm not very good yet but I can to this!" As her voice rings out around you, blue threads split off from her mote, forming a pathway that leads back to the balcony that you came from. A cautious step reveals the pathway to be surprisingly solid, and you make it back to the tiled floor without incident, the Lost Child floating alongside you, her light dimmed by the exertion.

"Your lantern looks warm... Can I have a nap?" she asks wearyly, and as you open the small glass door, she slowly flies inside, settling close to the bottom, where her light remains dimmed, at least for now. The Silver Mote's agitated pulsing has stopped for now as well, and a more complete silence falls over the room like a blanket, the only sound the muted clack of your feet against tile as you make your way to the exit.

As you leave, you take one last look back at the crystal spheres, slowly orbiting one another. The darkness here is not like the monsterous smog-thick Dark which blankets the rest of the library, it is softer. As if the magic within the spheres has kept the worst of it away. Regardless, as you leave, lantern held high, you pull the thick wooden door, bound in iron, closed behind you. Perhaps that little extra protection will help, perhaps it won't.

It does however, feel right.

You stand once more within the library proper, you had almost forgotten the oppressive nature of the darkness out here. The Golden Mote, quiet whilst you explored the Sphere-room, shines bright now, almost eager as you spot something to your left, a Thing that looks like a dog made out of black sludge but for a single large spot where it's face should be that is even darker, as if you were looking into the void itself. As you spot it, it rears back and makes a terrible hissing howl that echos long and loud.

The Silver and Golden motes are shining bright. The Blue mote is still diminished,

What do you do?

And we're back, with the longest update yet. Please note that there is no option for a write-in this time, I have ideas about what to do if either of these votes win. In the background, I have made some headway into building up further parts of this setting, and I hope you enjoyed The Observatory, and the Darkened Library in general thus far.

Well the fact that this thing just told about everything there is in here where we are makes us kinda screwed but i doubt we can out run it if it has a dogs traits so fuck it all.

[x] Fight

[X] Fight

Trusting the silver mote got us the blue, so I say trust the gold and stand our ground.

Also I liked the the Observatory, would have been cool to explore a little more of it though. Maybe a future revisit for something? Either way, excited to see where else this Library leads us to.

[X] Fight
This thing will dog(heh) us if we don't get rid of it before reinforcements come. And we know at the very least the old man is lurking around these parts. We need to kill it quick and then RUN!

Update is still being worked on, probably won't be up tonight. It will have, however, for the first time, music.

16 - For The Dawn Comes in Radiance
[X] Fight

You face the dark, and the horrors it creates, and something wells up in you. A fire you did not have before sparks in your chest, small and bright and hot. The lantern in your hand shines bright, and you know what you must do.
"Be Brave."
In a motion, you shrug off your cloak, letting the heavy material fall to the floor behind you. You stand tall, face firm and hands steady as you stare down at the creature before you. As you watch, two more skulk out of the Dark, pacing at the edge of your vision as if waiting for something.
"Stand fast against that deepest night."
You don't intend to give them that luxury.
"Let your soul shine forth..."
A deep breath fills your lungs, the light in your hand shines brighter than it ever has, and you move.
"... and Fight!"

Golden threads spool in your hand as you launch yourself forward, the shadow-creatures lurching back with pained hisses as your silver light finds their flesh, causing it to bubble and hiss like boiling tar.

Then you are amongst them. The blade of gold in your hand flashes once, twice, as it embeds itself in the flank of the first of the shadow-beasts. You turn as a second launches itself at you bringing your arm between it's teeth and your throat and biting back a scream as too-sharp fangs dig into your flesh.

The beast pays for it's victory though, as your sword goes through it's neck like so much water, it's shadowy body simply melting away as it dies.

You tense as you hear the triumphant roar of the third monster, turning to try and fend it off as it leaps towards your back, only for a flash of blue light to shine forth from your lantern. A solid panel of blue now hangs in the air directly in it's path, and with a horrible hissing cry, it rebounds and hits the floor with a thump, where you easily dispatch it.

For a moment, all is still, and you are suddenly very aware of the intense pain from your savaged arm. Thin rivulets of blood streak down your skin and hit the ground in a steady drip, and the rest of you isn't doing that much better. Breath comes fast and painful, your lungs burning along with your limbs as you feel like you've run a marathon.
"You are not done yet, holder of my heart, my hope."
But still, you stand, and your light still shines.
"Help comes, but you must stay strong."
A bass growl makes you turn, and you find yourself face to face with another of the beasts you just slew, except larger, much much larger. A massive lumbering beast the size of a bear, it towers over you even on all fours.

But you do not falter, raising your blade even as another rush of adrenaline sweeps through your system. The beast screams, and it's breath is like fire and ice and death all at once.

It rushes you with surprising speed. One great paw tipped with razor-sharp shadows hits a hastily erected guard, and something cracks, the sudden pain bringing bile to the back of your throat even as you are launched through the air from the sheer force of the blow.

You bring your lantern in close, protecting it with your body as you hit the wooden floor, more pain blooms, this time in your ribs, and your vision swims as the monster stands above you, triumphant. A terrible hissing laugh issues from the void where it's face should be as it looms above where you lie, one paw raised to end your life with merciless finality.
"Through your bravery, your pain and your sacrifice, WE WILL SHINE!"
Silver radiance blooms from your lantern, the glass door flying open and the Silver mote, now as bright a miniature sun, rises to meet the great beast's paw and stops it dead in it's tracks. The light grows, and grows, and at it's heart you can see a woman in a sundress holding a fist aloft, pulse after pulse of silver, gold and cyan light slamming into the Shadowed beast, stripping the darkness away in waves, until all that remains is a single shadowy mote, the last clinging shades blasted away until only a faint spark of green remains.

The woman turns to look at you, and you see only kindness in her face as she fades away, leaving only the Silver mote and the green, which both gently float down into your lantern, the glass pane quietly closing behind them.

"It came from over here!" Another voice reaches you, the sound of feet on wood registering in your fading consciousness. "It's a... Shit! They're hurt! Athan, bring bandages! Now!"
"We will be with you, now until your journey's end."
Warm hands touch your face, but you can't focus, "Stay with me, alright?! Stay..."

You drift away on a cloud of light.

Prologue: End.

I hope you've all enjoyed yourselves thus far. I really enjoy writing this, though a lot of it is just me thinking for a while and then basically writing from the seat of my pants. This is the longest part thus far, and I will be having a think about what directions I would like the story to head. I have some ideas, but I don't have anything quite concrete beyond a few vague bits and pieces and something perhaps a little more concrete in regards to my next post.

That said, it should probably be up in the next couple of days. I've a lot of family stuff to do, so if I don't post it until Friday or so, please don't worry.

Thanks for reading!

Joanne.

Blue shield, Golden sword, Silver ward.
And more interestingly, the ' motes of light' almost seem to be the essence of the individuals we can store in our lantern. INTERESTING!
I want to talk with all three motes some more. Silver lady seems mostly to be working at her best I bet, but I bet blue child and golden ??? have some tales of their own. Not to mention the green mote we just recieved. I highly suspect getting to meet our 'motes' and befriending/ dealing with any last regrets might be an important part of our quest...
