Ready GameMaker One? [Virtual Reality Quest]

[X] Try to persuade her to accept SADOS
-[X] I'll be honest, we're going to use SADOS no matter what. The ease which an AI offers us is rather incomparable, especially in the potential for automatically-generated quests, so I want you to try out working with it. Maybe play the game it made to give it guidance on how it can improve - AI's learn, and I want you to teach it. BUT, the narrative - and especially the overall narrative - is going to be your kingdom. If, in a month or so, you feel that what SADOS comes up with is unsatisfactory, come talk to me.
[X] Screw it, I want everything. All the features!
-[X] MMO-RPG as the baseline into which people are introduced. FPS as an option for archers/other ranged classes, which provides a bonus for accurate targeting, but WoW-like target selection and button-pressing will remain an option for the filthy casuals.
-[X] Add in some MMO-RTS which will kick in Legendary Moonlight Sculptor-style, i.e. if people build up enough rep w/ a town to become the mayor or acquire a lordship or establish a guild or the like, then RTS elements will come into play. As with FPS, this will feature a hands-on version with more versatility and the potential for *significantly* higher results, and a hands-off-type version where you essentially drag and drop people to assign them to jobs and to dictate which plants and etc. you want grown today.
-[X] Finally, MMO-Political Strategy will come into play as a way to acquire land/leadership/resources or just to backstab other players in a subtle manner. To some degree this would naturally come into play in the same way it has in Eve. But we will make it so players (of certain classes?) will be able to disguise their names, change their faces, etc. in order to infiltrate organizations. In return, player organizations will be given some leeway with how they hand out capabilities to different ranks, manage their resources, etc. and we will elicit open-sourced toolkits from the playerbase which will eventually become incorporated into our game. Political Strategy can be expanded upon later after we have a better understanding of what SADOS is capable of and a salable product. We don't need to release with everything we want to have. This is just laying out the elements of what I envision this game will become.
-[X] Pet Raising as a side game, possibly incorporated into RTS farming elements?
-[X] Dating Simulator as a later expansion of the Political Strategy field.

We be Chronicles of Elyria now.

Umi-san I'm loving the throw everything approach you're doing. Unrelated question, is Legendary Moonlight Sculptor worth reading? It's a light novel without a comic adaption right?

There is actually. Both are Korean and I don't remember how—if at all—the manhwa differs from the original tho. As for if it's worth reading, I would say yes. Everything happens in a Virtual Reality MMO which could as well by a different world. Your usual fantasy stuff, but with NPCs whom you can actually have a proper conversation, friendship etc. Like normal people basically. Plus hundreds classes, hundreds skills, countless possibilities and playstyles, kinda a Life Simulator. Personally I liked it.

Found the manhwa. Reading it now.

[X] MMO-Pet Raising simulator: Look there's nothing to be ashamed of. Lots of people got into games because of Pokemon. You were clearly one of them. But if Nintendo won't man up and give us that damn MMO, well then you will give the people what they need. Not sure how it will fit your genre-maybe if you call it Spirit Allies or something, people will think you're ripping off the Nasuverse instead. That's…better somehow?
    [X] Yes I do!
-[X] MMO-RPG: Why mess with what works? MMOs and RPGs are synonymous with each other, it's the obvious choice.

-[X] "Penny, I understand your displeasure with using an AI but an AI can accomplish certain tasks more efficiently and would ease the possible workload for us."
[X] MMO-FPS: Can you imagine how immersive shooting a gun is in first person with VR will be! We've got to stress this element, even if it's crossbows and not guns. We can even expand it to melee weapons like For Honor and Chivalry tried to do, really stress the visceral elements. Or even magic!
    [X] Yes I do!
-[X] MMO-Political Strategy: An Epic Political fantasy, perhaps with player grown kingdoms overthrowing the status quo, or enticing it! Imagine a game where everyone tries to be Littlefinger-it would be glorious.
-[X] MMO-Racer: Look, it's a bit of a risk, but people love mounts right? People love Dragons right? You could make a Dragon Racing game! Or even not just dragons-lots of magical creatures to race!

I'm thinking of a fantasy CK2 mixed with Total War. The setting could be in the fall of a great empire and the players are the local lords who are trying to take and hold as much as they can.

I really like this idea

Yeah my vote is basically what Chronicles of Elyria wants to do, though CoE is more low fantasy than epic fantasy.

The thing is what of this needs to be in the initial game and what can wait for updates and DLC.

36 Month Deadline and the Quest's endpoint
Ok I feel like I should state this, because some of you seem unclear.

This entire quest is about leading to the Launch of a VR MMO. Not the maintanence and expansion of the game post-launch. Once we reach launch date, this Quest is over and there will be an epilogue.

Aka, after 36 in-game months this game is over. So while you can think about potential expansions, anything not in the launch, you guys won't see. So you can make a slim minimalist game, or one with massive amounts of features, but after it's released, that's it. Quest is over.

Depending what happens maybe there could be a spin-off quest, related to events, if I think it's interesting/worth developing. Or if someone really wants to continue it, I can put the Quest up for adoption. But as far as I'm concerned, launch of game is endgame. (Also because there's the small chance you might trap your players in VR or something worse'll happen, in which case expansions are the last things you should be thinking about)

Hope that's clear, if anyone has any questions, feel free to ask.

(Also because there's the small chance you might trap your players in VR or something worse'll happen, in which case expansions are the last things you should be thinking about)
Nonsense. Just because they're trapped in the VR doesn't mean they shouldn't be allowed to enjoy the new expansion pack's features.

"Now, on the one hand you might be trapped in an online game, where you can't log out and if you die you don't come back. However, our upcoming expansion pack will bring brand new loot boxes!"

"You're worse than Kayaba!" Says all the trapped players. "Also, how do I pre-order?"

Umi-san I'm loving the throw everything approach you're doing. Unrelated question, is Legendary Moonlight Sculptor worth reading? It's a light novel without a comic adaption right?

Do you mean broadcast to people in the game, or broadcast to the real world aka live streaming? 'Dragon Racing, the new Esport, live on ESPN online'.
On the one hand some of the game features & choices in the story itself were rather innovative, and the main character's greed was amusing and his pragmatism & dedication to hard work and family was inspiring.
But on the other hand, his plot armor was just too much (!!!! he survives an entire continent hunting him, it's so unrealistic goddammit) & the story dragged on and he never really changed, which I found irritating. (But which is standard for LN's, sadly.)
If you have a lot of time, read it. It's like 30+ books, and took me ~5 days of constant reading from start to finish when it was at 23 books.
Otherwise, if royalroadl (or whatever the original translation site is called) still has fanfiction based in LMS then read the first book or two of LMS and then switch over to those.

Honestly, the RTS you describe is already Political strategy, not RTS.

Honestly, the RTS you describe is already Political strategy, not RTS.
If you're talking about the path by which you acquire the land/relationships which allow you to utilize the land-/squad-management functions which would make up this RTS system, yes. It definitely would involve either politics or a weird settler initiative. This is by design, to make a smoother transition between the more normal MMORPG and the RTS.

Afterward, I offer both a VR/in-depth tailored and a more typical, distant version of what RTS might be. The latter is more like WoW's home management thing or this other MMO where you're a god that idr the name of. But it's intended to become more complex than that as your # of houses and etc. expand. It's just that it's purposely not explicitly an RTS format because this game is in real time, which means that you're not going to have workers do things in "real time" - i.e. sped up - way, which means that if you're here to play an RTS game in the simplified format you're going to become bored and should probably go out and level your character because you can get killed while you're managing things. The abbreviated format is more intended for macromanagement of really large empires or for casuals who own a farm but do other things. At its fullest use it would be somewhat like a balance between Allegiance. and Dominions 4, with much more risk of mutiny.

The other format is more of an LMS/Eve Online/Second Life basis where you go out and actually talk to people NPC's or otherwise to learn more about their background and hidden skillsets (sufficient interaction would improve their capabilities), design buildings/buy schematics for buildings, and generally micromanage stuff. I guess it's more of a political strategy game, though I'm not very familiar with the definition thereof.

I would argue that if you are defining RTS as the typical RTS game, where you have a 3rd person overview and send commands instantly to NPC soldiers who obey identically and etc., you aren't using the MMO & VR aspects of the game effectively. VR means that things should be more bodily, more first-person, more enthralling, lively, immediate. These things naturally oppose the RTS genre as created for play on a screen (or a board, if we talk about S w/o the RT). MMO means that you have a shitton of players who all want to feel important and yet want to be a part of something greater. Which means that you have subcommanders & governors who are not predictable NPC's which you can delegate actions toward, assassins that you can send out to kill people w/o needing to micromanage how they get past towers et. al, mages that have made themselves walking nukes, etc. All of these people are people who want to enjoy the game that they bought. If you're not political enough to get them to do what you want through words, you need to be powerful enough to get them to do what you want through threats and money. If you don't want to deal with this stuff at all then live in the forest, elicit xenophobia in your populace, or become a necromancer and cast a geas on your lich lieutenants that prevents them from talking to & being suborned by players.

It is my opinion that an RTS system which takes advantage of these elements would, for war-based events, necessarily involve ordering people to wave flags to signal what you want to happen, sending messages via a game-like chat to certain individual sub-commanders, planning out your activities in advance, etc. For economic events it would similarly involve sending messages to people, though for that kind of thing a mobile third-person view (like Black&White, or Age of Myths, or Google Maps w/ a Street View option is probably more appropriate/cinematic.

Edit:
Going off the google maps street view thing I edited in above, maybe to make the RTS version better suited for people who want to not be attached to their char they can street-view-in until they're inside a person and possess their body temporarily. For narrative & balance purposes it would be limited to people who've had a certain magic performed upon them.

I'll be honest and say that this whole idea is a badly framed explanation of something I've been thinking about for a while.

Ahhh. You want more to use the term real time tactics, then, for what you are talking about with the war based events.

Or rather, due to the time frames involved, your are talking more about a mix of strategy games (which... might? be covered under politics) And Real time tactics.

RTS stands more for where your base can be pumping out units and continuing expansion even while directly under attack, IE a timescale where seconds matter in the production que.

What you are thinking about fits more under strategy, where you slowly build your land and power over time, in a fashion more akin to Civilization than starcraft - but then, instead of a pure numbers army A attacks army B, you want people to be able to command the units in the battle, which is under RTT.

edit: In any case, so long as that explanation is seen, I've got faith in the GM.

(Swords and sorcery, but will full VR swordplay, monster-fighting, and spell-casting.)

Ahhh. You want more to use the term real time tactics, then, for what you are talking about with the war based events.

Real Time Strategy games to me are games that are not Turn-Based Strategy games.
Whether seconds, minutes, or days, whatever length of time a production queue takes, whether or not it can pump out units and expand while under attack, whether or not battles involve tactics, etc. are all choices made by the creators. It remains an RTS game because time is a factor, not turns, and because Strategy is to some extent involved.

Possibly this definition has grown inappropriate with the rising eminence of Starcraft and the tendency for X4 games like Stellaris to include pause options. But honestly, in such a case y'all should just come up with a new acronym. The joy of Starcraft is in the short length of time and not the fact that it's done in real time. Fast-Paced Strategy should be a good acronym. :p

-[X] Dating Simulator as a later expansion of the Political Strategy field
