Ready GameMaker One? [Virtual Reality Quest]

There's something weird going on with the tally. Notice Travisplo and Nevill's vote for alternate earth doesn't count with the other alternate earth, making a vote of 7 and 2, rather than a vote of 9.

So technically, Fantasy and Alternate Earth are tied. Unless I'm reading the tally wrong.
That's because technically they're not the same vote; they have—for some reason—Americanised 'recognisable'.

Note to self, always check if there are duplicate votes in tallies. Second note to self, this time do not forget the first note.

Proper tally now, and yep, it's a tie so far apparently. Still going to be made by na AI tho.

[X] Fantasy: Your world will be one with a focus on wonder and the fantastical, rather than technology. You're not sure if you want to go traditional Tolkien-esc high fantasy, gritty low fantasy, or amazing wuxia style martial arts world. Perhaps it's overt, like Superheroes fly past skyscrapers, or it's under wraps, with vampires and the like hiding in dark alleys.
[X]Space: Your world will be out of this world-literally. Whether it takes place on another planet, or on a space ship, or across the galaxy, you know you want to explore a world with stars the player has never seen, with technology they could only imagine.

How dare they Americanise my words! Strike all such votes from the tally-they are null and void!

I'm just messing with you guys. Carry on. Sorry I won't be updating until friday-usually I don't want to wait this long, but I want to pay attention to my new job in the first week at least. I hope you can all be patient with me.

But if you do null them then fantasy will win.:V

So by updating Friday does that mean the votes will be open for that long?

Voting closes officially at 6pm GMT on Friday. It will probably slow down long before then, but I want to be fair. Give myself a couple of hours to make a post that fits the votes while giving everyone else enough time to avoid a last minute scramble.

Hey, I just fixed your spelling is all! The American Way is the only way, after all.:p

I had a crazy idea. What if we try to make a Sburb Simulator?

Oh hell, this combination would be horrifying fun.

To get some discussion going, who besides me has come up with a design for an MMO before? (MMO design is one of my hobbies and I come up with a new one every few years.) Or perhaps you have participated in a team MMO design process? What was that design like? :)

Me, I'm a player who likes soloing, quests, scalable instanced dungeons, and 'sandpark' games with plenty of sim-like gameplay (e.g. growing crops and raising/breeding pet monsters). And I like games where appearance customization happens within the game and incorporated into the plot and faction relationships, rather than all at the beginning, so I favor appearance customizations as quest rewards or craftable costume pieces. I don't like classes, guilds, or raids, so those weren't a big part of my last MMO design, WildWright. I chose a standard 'grinder' type of leveling for that design, but more recently I've favored systems which don't have XP but instead the player directly earns stat and skill points. I found the most interesting and challenging parts of the design to be the NPC factions, the crafting system, and the combat system. The most innovative part of the design was probably the property ownership system, where a player temporarily places their property into a suburb around an NPC city or between PvE areas in order to use crafting facilities on the property. This property is actually a pocket dimension which travels with the player, and is packed back into the player's pocket when not in use.

If you don't like classes got any examples of MMOS I might know. I'm not a huge fan of the genre but Runescape is the only example I can think of.
Also how do you feel about Path of Exiles system

The way I imagine a good classless skill system working is by reference to Dofus. Dofus has a pool of skills per class which players can purchase with skill points; what I imagine is simply having all the skills in the game together in the same pool. In fact the result would be somewhat like Skyrim, where there's no real restriction on how you combine skill trees, and you can be a stealth archer mage thief swordsman enchanter if you want to, but for efficiency players would mostly choose to specialize in 2 or 3 areas. Not too different from Path of Exile's Skill tree, aside from the fact that Dofus doesn't have a tree structure. I'm not sure I like the gem system in Path of Exile though. They are somewhat like the materia system in FF7, which I mostly like, and somewhat like the skill macro system in Ryzom, which I also mostly like, but I'd have to study how they work in more depth to be sure.

There are some existing classless MMOs, but they're usually either survival ones, which mostly have terribly boring combat systems, or pokemon-alike ones where your team of pet monsters replaces your skills.

I wouldn't be opposed to Space, but Fantasy is my favorite option.

Hmm. Will there be an option to add post-medieval technology such as steam power? I feel like a medieval setting is too cliched.

As I said, the exact specifics of the world you pick will be decided later on by you guys, including tech level. You might go standard western medieval, bronze age like Tyranny, 11th century chinese tech, Eberron level magitech with flying trains, or a wild west fantasy like Alloy of Law. Fantasy covers a lot of ground.

If people choose melee fighting focuses then how do we add levelling rewards given unlocking non-magical moves would only be possible by the actual players co-ordination? And is magic purely based on activation, stats and level or should performing the casting movement with great precision have an effect? This would bring it more in line with melee characters

Specific questions about mechanics, types of character, leveling, how VR interacts with it and others, will be discussed further in the game's development. Of course it will be left in the end up to the voters.

From some LitRPG I've read, magic (or psionics in a more sci-fi setting) is usually done by:
  • physically performing a gesture associated with the 'magic' effect
  • Saying the spell or a magic word associated with the 'magic' effect
  • Thinking or visualising the 'magic' you want to select, if the VR tech is advanced enough to read intent
For this game, players might cast magic via one of these methods, a combination of these methods, or an entirely new method I hadn't even thought of. How powerful the spells are, whether it's based on the skill level of the player, the power of the spell, how much mana is put in it-again, entirely up to you guys.

But once again, it's far too early in development to really settle down on one of these yet. The setting hasn't even been remotely finalised. But please, feel free to talk about this or any potential game mechanics to your leisure.

I've always loved settings where you need all three of the methods to cast as lower-tiers
but as you get higher up you can start dropping parts if you want (or keep them to avoid slight drops in power/get a slight increase in power). Adds a nice sense of scale to the power

Sounds good, though adding more options means more work until our VR is fully functional. Although if the vote stays the same, we'll have an AI helping us so....

TBH I think that being able to easily replace magic with psionics in a sci-fi setting shows just how out of place the concept is. Psionics IS magic, basically.

depends on the actual implementation, but yeah psionics is something out of the common ken and thus basically the magic of the sci-fi world. I.e., any technology sufficiently advanced...

of course, you could always call it like the quantum manipulation of distant atoms through entanglement webs, or the like, if it's a common feature of the world.
