Ready Game Maker One?

"You're insane!" You hear from your boss as you prepare to walk out the door.

"I know." You say, as you rest your hand on the door knob, considering your next action. You're about to leave a big AAA video game company, one where you've reached a comfortable successful career despite being in your late 20s. And you've enjoyed your job. So there seems like there's no sane reason to leave your job. Except for one thing.

A new company named D33P DREAMER has just anounced their fully immersive VR device, the DRIFTER. Light years ahead of the Occulus Rift or the HTC vive, or anything like that. It doesn't just go on your face and shows you a world, it takes you fully into a virtual world. The demo game they showed at the recent games expo was so strikingly real, some of the testers genuinely thought they were in another world. You were one of those testers.

They announced the device would be released to the public in 3 years, as they modify it for the general public. However, they've allowed the software to be leased by game companies, to use to create games to be released alongside the DRIFTER. There's been a lot of talk of updating pre-existing games to this new console like Skyrim, or maybe a quick original FPS or brawler. Your company plans on something similar.

But you knew, the minute you put on the DRIFTER what you wanted to make-no. Needed to make. You were going to make a new world. A virtual world. A world with players from all around the world engaging, and discovering this world. A true, Virtual Reality MMO. Released the same day the DRIFTER would reach the public, in 3 years.

Your boss said that was insane. You couldn't make a full virtual reality MMO with brand new technology in just 3 years, it was practically suicide. So you quit.

You're going to start your own company, and make your own virtual reality MMO in 3 years. Nothing's going to stop you.

Of course the question remains, why are you so confident you can do it?

[ ] You believe in yourself, your skills and your vision. There's nothing special helping you-just your own drive. (This is Hard Mode. No special benefits, but also no 'strangeness' to contend with)

[ ] You felt a connection in a dream to another world, that was trying to contact you. You're not making a world-you're trying to make a connection to that world you saw in your dream. You can't prove it's real, and you can't remember everything-but it felt so real.
(Once this gets going, it becomes easier to build the game, almost like it's building itself-and sometimes changing if you lose your vision. Of course you can't tell anyone that this world is real, because that sounds mad. There's also a chance that the game starts to feel too real for players...)

[ ] By sheer chance, you discovered an incredible artificial intelligence that almost seems alive. And it wants to build a world to play in. (Assists in building the world from start to finish. Easy to demonstrate it's effectiveness but dangerous PR. Also, where did the software come from? Does it have intentions it's not telling you about?)

Regardless of your reasons, one of the first questions you need to deal with is, what kind of game do you want to make? You already know it needs to be an MMO in VR. But that's very broad. What kind of setting does your game take place in? (These are broad statements-you can narrow your focus of genre later.)

[ ] Fantasy: Your world will be one with a focus on wonder and the fantastical, rather than technology. You're not sure if you want to go traditional Tolkien-esc high fantasy, gritty low fantasy, or amazing wuxia style martial arts world. But the world itself is going to be completely unlike the modern day.

[ ]Space: Your world will be out of this world-literally. Whether it takes place on another planet, or on a space ship, or across the galaxy, you know you want to explore a world with stars the player has never seen, with technology they could only imagine.

[ ] Alternative modern day: A world like our own, recognisable but slightly different. Maybe it's a few years in the past for some exciting Cold War espionage, or 15 minutes in the future, with cutting edge cybernetics. Maybe it's modern day but in a world that's changed completely. Perhaps it's overt, like Superheroes fly past skyscrapers, or it's under wraps, with vampires and the like hiding in dark alleys.

[ ] Adaption: You didn't just feel like making a world-you wanted to make a world based on a piece of media you loved. A setting that you feel is perfect to become a virtual MMO. This could be Gundam, Harry Potter, Wild Cards, etc. Of course, the difficult part is getting
the rights and licenses for that IP. You're gonna start the game not only significantly in the red for buying the rights, but also partially restricted by the original creators. You can't stray too far from their vision without making them angry. Still, it comes with a lot of strong attention from fans of that IP-so don't let them down!

[Restriction: Do not pick a setting/franchise that already has an MMO, has made an MMO previously, or is working on one. Also no video game originals-those companies won't let you use their IPs, especially a brand new company. Aka, can't use Danganronpa because it started as a video game franchise. You can however use Mad Max, because that started as a movie franchise.]

Welcome to my first quest on this forum! I will be running a parallel quest of this on Space Battles. Note these quests aren't mirrored, and they're independent of each other, so I expect they will go in completely different directions.

I'm gonna reserve the next three posts, then people can go. I probably won't post until late Friday, so you've got till then to vote.

Current State of the game
Current state of the game:

Genre:
Fantasy

Estimated Stats:

Engagement: 5%

Immersion: 5%

Variety: 5%

Hype: 0%

Finance: 10%

Time until launch: 36 Months

Stat explanations:

there are 5 main factors one needs to consider for your new game, especially since it's a new release on VR. These factors are:

Engagement:
How engaged the average player is while in your game. How much fun they're having, and how little gaps there are between the fun. When a game starts becoming tedious, because there's a lot of repetitive content or it becomes a grind, engagement can go down. Of course there are many other factors that can bring down engagement or bring it up-good humour, likable supporting cast or a gripping story can keep players engaged when they might otherwise drop a game with similar mechanics.

Immersion: This is how realistic a player finds your virtual reality world, and how much they buy into your reality. Movies, books and games before yours have all required a level of suspension of disbelief from an audience to get them to feel like they're part of a world. But with VR, and good art design, a player won't need to suspend disbelief to feel like they're in a new world.

Variety: Some games can get by with a very simple mechanic-you shift blocks in Tetris, you shoot in Space Invaders, and you die in Super Meat Boy. However, nowadays, and especially for an MMO, it's important that the player has a variety of options to do in the game. This can be different styles of combat, to inventive crafting systems, to even pet breeding simulator. The more developed and flexible game systems programmed in your game, the more things your player will have to do.

Hype: This is both how aware the general public is of your game, and how excited they are for it to come out. Big public moves, like press conferences, demos or early reviews can get people aware of your game, which will lead to more early sales and pre-orders. However, bad public feedback about the game, controversy, or other negative publicity can lower your hype. Not all publicity is good publicity. Although sometimes, pushing your controversial elements can actually increase hype, making bigger sales.

Finance: This represents the amount you are spending versus your expected returns from the sales of your game. You can't expect to release a game if you estimate it will cost you more than you will make in return. Thankfully, this is not an exact figure-as the quality of your game increases, or hype causes expectations to adjust, you may be given more leeway to invest in your game. However, if you go too over budget, you may be forced to release a cut down version of your game called the Minimum Viable Product. These are rarely well recived by audiences, but you have to consider it when the alternative is to go bankrupt and never release the game at all.

Company Employees
Company Employees:

SADOS: An artificial intelligence you discovered on a forgotten laptop, that ran a text based adventure called The Nipono Pact Tower. It wants a new world to play in, and so you've decided to use it as the foundation for the first VR MMO.

Penny Equihua-Head Writer: A writer for both tv and video games, with a lot of experience in making emotional realistic characters. However, she wants better representation of minority and LGBTQA+ characters in games, and is willing to fight for it. (+2% to Engagement, costs 1% finance)

WHAM-Head of Design: Also known as Wakeem Hiresh Abdul Maclin a Director, who believes in a cinematic visual experience. Likes big explosion and thrilling actions, dislikes thoughtful, poignant moments for being too slow. (+2% to Designer, costs 1% finance)

Nicky Toll-Lead Programmer: A kid coder-dropped out of university, and made a series of successful short games in indie jams. Likes comedy focus in their work. (+2% to Variety, costs 1% finance)

Morticia Lyon-Project Manager: An experienced project manager, with 22 years under their belt, Seems happy without any prejudices about the game one way or the other. (Reduce initial finance by 2%, helps keep employee satisfaction high, costs 2% finance a month.)

[X] By sheer chance, you discovered an incredible artificial intelligence that almost seems alive. And it wants to build a world to play in. (Assists in building the world from start to finish. Easy to demonstrate it's effectiveness but dangerous PR. Also, where did the software come from? Does it have intentions it's not telling you about?)

[X] Alternative modern day: A world like our own, recognizable but slightly different.

Well, this looks fun. I'll be watching.

[X] Fantasy: Your world will be one with a focus on wonder and the fantastical, rather than technology. You're not sure if you want to go traditional Tolkien-esc high fantasy, gritty low fantasy, or amazing wuxia style martial arts world. But the world itself is going to be completely unlike the modern day.

[X] You felt a connection in a dream to another world, that was trying to contact you. You're not making a world-you're trying to make a connection to that world you saw in your dream. You can't prove it's real, and you can't remember everything-but it felt so real.

[X] Alternative modern day: A world like our own, recognisable but slightly different.
Lets make a game where the players are flesh-eating carnivores that have animal inspired real forms :V

(Once this gets going, it becomes easier to build the game, almost like it's building itself-and sometimes changing if you lose your vision. Of course you can't tell anyone that this world is real, because that sounds mad. There's also a chance that the game starts to feel too real for players...)

[X]Space: Your world will be out of this world-literally. Whether it takes place on another planet, or on a space ship, or across the galaxy, you know you want to explore a world with stars the player has never seen, with technology they could only imagine.
That's the plan I'm voting for over on SB, by the way.

the rights and licenses for that IP. You're gonna start the game not only significantly in the red for buying the rights, but also partially restricted by the original creators. You can't stray too far from their vision without making them angry. Still, it comes with a lot of strong attention from fans of that IP-so don't let them down!

Proper superhero universe, each player even gets their own origin story! Player driven economy and story lines! Let's go wild with it!

I noticed you changed your vote because of something another player said. Don't worry about the other thread, vote for what you want to see. Besides, the votes change so frequently and there's so much time before votes are called, that who even knows who'll win over there.

So vote for what you want to see on this. (Of course you might have just changed because you realised you wanted fantasy instead, which is perfectly acceptable, please don't feel like I'm pressuring you one way or the other).

Unfortunately Star wars already has an MMO (one still active too) so it's not eligible as an adaption choice. Sorry.

Plan Secret Alien Backstory is a-go

That MMO was cancelled before it was finished, and eternal crusade doesn't count (I think). So yeah, 40k is fine.
@CoreBrute I'm assuming you're mirroring this quest on SB and not running two of the same quest right?
You would assume wrong. These are two separate quests as I said in the first post. The votes here don't count there and vice versa. Two different mmos for two different quests. Madness I know.
