Is it possible to gradually decrease the length of sleep, as opposed to ceasing sleeping all at once, or otherwise ease into the transition?
--[X] If there are ways to start getting rid of sleep without major negative effects on your mental state, begin practicing it tonight.
-[X] Have Minami locate the Yoshikawa and Kawaguchi girls via spy sat and knowing where they live. Determine magical girl status if possible.

For some reason I can't figure out how to copy things on SV, so I quoted the significant part from a post @Noumero made, then deleted the quote tags.

Edit: rescheduled some parts to take place tomorrow.

So, a few things regarding the vote:

  • Word of QM: All other issues aside, learning to go without sleep isn't something Yui can do quickly or easily, and there's really not much she can do to work toward that tonight, so don't get hung up on that point. Asking Maiko will just get a bit of exposition on what would be needed to learn it.
  • What, exactly, are you expecting Minami to do tonight? She also has school tomorrow, doesn't currently have the addresses of the suspected meguca in Yoshikawa and Kawaguchi wards, and even if she did I think those areas are outside spysat range when she's at home or at school.
  • Please note that you cannot brainmail someone via Kyubeyphone unless you've met them in person (Minami, however can relay telepathy to anyone in her range).
  • Rio's group are staying on very nearly the opposite side of Nagamioka; they're probably out of Kyubeyphone range. Also, Rio herself is probably sleeping and it's late enough that Fuuka might not be on your side if you wake Rio up. :V

I think it's not really something Yui would ask for and that we're only pushing for it for mechanical benefits over actually dealing with any particular problems at hand.

Most people would jump on this chance just to do better in school. Lets them study more.

All else equal, Yui would absolutely jump at the opportunity to finish her homework every evening without cutting into meguca time and then spend the rest of the night lounging around reading manga or whatever.

The always-on mindset that Maiko has cultivated (and that apparently comes naturally to people like Asami and Yui's father) is something she could manage, but probably would increase her stress levels somewhat.

This is a really good basis for arguing Yui's personal reasons for not sleeping and well as a stance on why she's already gonna screw herself if it's meguca v. normality. However, I would argue against this in that Yui hasn't backed this kind of idea up. She's committed herself, so far, to her homework, to paying attention in school, and to her normal friends whenever she can.

Well... Yui is basically committed to maintaining both aspects of her life as much as possible. Figuring out how best to balance the competing demands on her time is one of the fundamental elements of the quest, so to a large extent this is a point where the characterization will be shaped by the votes rather than me vetoing anything that's too OOC.

Also, what if they notice that she's not in her bed, but outside doing who-knows-what? Yui's parents give her a lot of freedom, but her being outside the house during night when you thought she was inside just screams shady and suspect business.
Of course they probably won't check, but better safe than sorry. Family emergencies or other such late night stuff requiring Yui could end with them stepping into an empty bedroom.

Yes, absolutely. Yui being out of the house all night without her parents knowing on a regular basis is playing with fire only slightly less than skipping school repeatedly.

When Yui first met Maiko, she'd gone over a week without sleep and hadn't even realised it. Her body looked tired, but she was still operating at a pretty high capacity.

Maiko is actually kind of a special case, because symptoms of fatigue and malnutrition are imposed on her by her wish magic when her MP gets too low. "Zero" is actually just the cutoff point for the penalties, and when you met her, she'd let her MP dip below 0 without realizing it.

... And Maiko is holding a lot of key positions right now as well as being the groups ace in the hole.

We definitely need to put keeping an eye on Maiko somewhere on the agenda, she doesn't do well taking care of herself and she's somewhat critical.

...Oh. So, we should move the unconfirmed magical girls to tomorrow (possibly after school?), while we MinamiNet Rio&Co in the morning about the grief seeds.

Edit: I have finished editing my vote.

She needs a waifu to take care of her needs

Yui: "Onii-chan, I need you to be a wife for someone..."

She really doesn't, no.

I guess it's not really a spoiler, so here's the actual mechanics:

  • 0 to 32 MP
    • No health effects
    • Recovering 1 MP requires 200 calories, and either 30 minutes of sleep or 2 hours of relaxation
  • -8 to -1 MP
    • Minor health effects, like when you met her
    • Relaxation is no longer sufficient; sleep is required until reaching 0 MP
  • -12 to -9 MP
    • Hunger and exhaustion are bad enough to be a liability in battle
    • Maiko will be unable to fall asleep until eating enough calories to reach -8 MP
    • Sleep time increases to 1 hour per MP until MP reaches -8
    • Once sleeping, Maiko will be nearly impossible to wake until MP reaches -8
  • -16 to -11 MP
    • Like above, but worse
    • Hunger and fatigue are impossible for her to ignore
    • Physical damage from the health effects will start burning magic to passively heal her
  • Below -16 MP
    • Maiko will pass out within minutes and be effectively comatose
    • The calories needed to restore MP until reaching -8 will be taken by breaking down body tissue, expending magic as needed to heal the damage; she can incur as much as 1000 points of corruption before waking up.
...Oh. So, we should move the unconfirmed magical girls to tomorrow (possibly after school?), while we MinamiNet Rio&Co in the morning about the grief seeds.

Unless your intent is to ask Minami to stay out late working on this, which... she probably would be okay with, but would probably incur mild disapproval from Maiko.

Also, assuming Rio's group is at home tomorrow morning, they are within Kyubeyphone range while you're at school. In case you want to keep Minami's magic a secret for some reason.

Nooo, my transhumanistic dreams! Whatever, I still want to listen to the exposition.

Regarding the social media girls, oops. It was assumed that we have their names and therefore their addresses. Could Minami find out their addresses?

Also, hi! I binged this quest in two days, and am waiting for the next update to start voting here. どうぞよろしくお願いします

Welcome to the present, glad to have you with us!

Regarding the social media girls, oops. It was assumed that we have their names and therefore their addresses. Could Minami find out their addresses?

No, she just figured out roughly where they live because people are bad at privacy, teenagers with smartphones doubly so. :V Enough that if they are meguca, Minami and Yui would be able to find them.

She can get their actual name and address, but not without her notes and an internet connection. If Minami was back at Momoko's house playing mission control you'd probably be able to check on at least one of the candidates tonight, but not when she's halfway across town running around with you and Maiko.

Can Yui power level? Learning power? Training montage? Power copying? Need to build up time/magic resistance before March 16th.

Oh, okay then. Good enough.

Can Yui power level? Learning power? Training montage? Power copying?
Yes, yes, to a degree, not as far as we know.
Her power is an abstract "power over power", which includes a variety of things ranging from brute force such as Pink Beams to subconscious electricity manipulations to taking over an established connection (be that a connection between witch-kissed human and the witch or a meguca-controlled piece of metal and the meguca) to sucking out social power (authority) of everyone in the room.
There are hundreds of applications we didn't discover, but it was theorized that, given Yui's likely mindset at the time of making the wish, she would have an easier time of coming up with ways of using her power if the stakes are high and innocent lives are on the line.

That said, training is evidently not impossible, as we did discover curved beams this way, and the electricity manipulation was used in a non-hostile context. I suggested sparring as a possible middle ground where chances-of-discovering-new-power and risk-of-dying are concerned.

Clarification, ho!
Yeah, okay. Pretty much everything important is hashed out then.

I, too, disapprove of breaking our sleeping habits. It is something that should only be used in an emergency, and I am pretty sure we would be able to pull a couple of sleepless nights in a pinch as could any mundane human (and since the need is purely psychological, we won't suffer any health aftereffects).
It's better to have the ability and not use it than to not have it and need it.
Nah, I don't think it works like that. It's a one-way process. If you break a dependency on bodily functions, why would you return to a less efficient system? If you don't need sleep, why would you lay in the bed for several hours?

Sleeping, eating, breathing and probably a few other things could be substituted with some magic expenditure, but I don't think those are something we need to get rid of. I'd rather not get any closer to viewing our body as a meat puppet. Even the idea of shutting down our nerves so we could pull a Terminator does not sit entirely too well with me.

I don't get this at all. Is this a personal opinion, or is it a narrative opinion? Like, is this something you'd say about your own life, or is this only an opinion you hold for certain characters?

I ask because I need to tailor my response to your actual objections, which I'm having trouble understanding.
