This was bad. There was no mundane explanation she could offer for her current appearance, and even if she did tell her dad that she was a parahuman Taylor couldn't exactly tell her dad that her current state was the result of merging with a magic AI. Which, Taylor realised, talked about whole societies of magic users. Not secret, hidden ones. The magic AI currently sharing her body was from outer space! But that lady was human, Taylor thought to herself. There were other Earths out there, so perhaps that was where Excalibur was from?

"Statement: I do not know, my master. My creators could travel across both the void between stars and the distance between universes. Alarmed Statement: My master, my databanks are corrupted. Accurate intelligence on my creators is not available," Excalibur said, her synthetic tones displaying significantly more emotion than usual. Which was odd, Taylor thought. Excalibur was clearly advanced enough to have a perfectly synthesized voice, so was her computerised voice an affection or a restriction. Whatever the answer, she did not respond to Taylor's thoughts.

"That's... that's not good. Can you get us back to the place I found you?" Taylor asked.

"Answer: Yes, my master. My linker core is sufficient for a short ranged teleport. Any further than a few hundred kilometres would require you to cast the spell, as your linker core greatly outstrips my own. Whilst I would still be assisting with the calculations, they would have to be empowered almost entirely by you, my master,"

Taylor was in something of a controlled panic as she packed some things into a backpack. She hoped that this was all going to blow over, but there was a serious possibility that she wasn't going to be back for a while. Unless Excalibur could fix herself, Taylor was going to be stuck looking like an especially goth zombie. Even if she could sell her dad on her just being a parahuman, she didn't think she could pull that one on the PRT - and her dad would make her join the wards.

Which was why she very busy telling herself that she wasn't running away from home. She slung her backpack over her shoulder, and headed downstairs to phone her dad. It was already dark outside, but he'd still be at work. She waited for the phone to ring with a growing sense of trepidation.

"Dad, it's Taylor,"

"Oh, hey, I was just about to leave," her father replied

"Can I go sleep over at a friend's house? I can get a ride there and back," Taylor said, feeling very lucky that it was a friday.

"Oh, okay. Will you stay for the whole weekend or?"

"That's the plan! There's enough lasagne in the fridge for today and tomorrow, and I should be back Sunday," Taylor said, hoping her dad wouldn't question her story too thoroughly. He wasn't neglectful or anything, but she probably shouldn't get away with lying to him so often.

With the phonecall concluded, it was time for Taylor to depart. She felt Excalibur's mana moving within her, snapping into rigid patterns as a dark purple triangle appeared under her feet. With a soft, synthesised, phrase Taylor was suddenly back into the fragment of starship she'd found her unison device in.

Weapons which she now knew to be mass-produced armed devices were held in racks. These did not have the computational power or training functions of her own Liberator, nor could they stand up to as much stress in combat. Then again, these were generally only for use in emergencies. Taylor had packed a sleeping bag and was already pretty tired, so she was content to let Excalibur work and get some sleep.

Taylor woke in a cold metal box underground, and panicked for a few moments. Then she remembered what had happened yesterday and calmed down. Liberator was cold against her skin on it's chain. Her skin was still unnaturally pale, her veins still black, and Excalibur was still in unison with her. Her HUD said it was eight in the morning.

"So did you figure anything out overnight, Excalibur?" Taylor asked.

"Sorrowful Statement: I did, my master. It appears whatever cyberattack damaged my replication functions also damaged my unison functions. I am unable to exit our unison state, possibly permanently"

Taylor slumped back down and started to cry. Why did the best day in her life - getting to fly - have to go and be ruined by this? Why hadn't Excalibur told her about this before now?

"Statement: I did not know, my master. Though you are a most pleasant partner, this is not the path I would have chosen either," Excalibur said. After the AI laid it out like that, it was the most sensible answer.

"Oh, I've be such a bitch to you about this, Excalibur. We're stuck together, but you're the one stuck without a body,"

"Statement: No, my master. You are not the one who has done this to me. You are not the one who gave me the face of a monster or the voice of a emotionless machine. You are not the one who crippled me in the most cruel manner possible. You have treated me as a friend, as a person with dreams and desires of my own. Proud Statement: I am capable of hope and love, of hate and anger. No matter what illusions others may try to obscure these things behind, they are true," Excalibur said in her neutral, synthesized voice. Suddenly, that voice struck Taylor as such a cruel thing to inflict on someone like Excalibur. To create a being as emotional as any human, and then deliberately cripple its ability to express those emotions. That, Taylor thought, was true cruelty.

The two of them spent some time in silence, taking refuge in the warmth of the sleeping bag. Taylor didn't want to think about what she'd do next, so she retreated into image training. Leaving Excalibur to keep watch with Taylor's eyes, she jumped into flight simulations. She banked and weaved on two different image partitions; learning to fly in combat.

She woke from the sky to find herself still in a metal box under the ground, hiding from the world.

"Promise: If the people of this world will not accept you, my master, then we shall find our future amongst the stars,"

She's still got her bugs.

... Hmm. I remember a peggy sue fic where Taylor used her bug control as essentially a data storage and processing tool to make up for rapidly losing her memories. It was vaguely interesting in the computational sense, though the story was a bit meh so I stopped reading eventually, but if we could do something similar... Isn't part of Nanoha's magic based on processing information and calculating formulae? Taylor should be pretty good at that, due to her secondary powers, I think.

Bah, this means I actually need to watch Nanoha, doesn't it? I remember dropping it after 3 episodes when the anime didn't match up with the whole 'Magical Girl Government Enforcer -Chan' bit that sold me on the idea of watching it in the first place.
Eh, Nanoha's first season is slow burn until like, after the 4th episode/the second half when the genre shift really starts happening. A good reccomendation is to watch Nanoha Movie 1st instead of watching the 1st season and then watch the 2nd (Nanoha A's) and 3rd seasons (Nanoha Strikers).

Relieve stress before talking with Dad, which will only get worse the longer Taylor delays it.

[x] Plan Flying Sword
-[x] Use of your armed device in melee combat
-[x] Flight

Learning how to use Freer of Slaves in melee combat without hurting herself, and improving her ability to fly which Taylor loves do.

-[X] Research "magic" capes. Maybe some of them are really magical? See if you could teleport to some of the more approachable ones to check
-[X] Together with Excalibur check on capes who could possibly assist her problems and can be trusted with doing so, either for money or a chance to study magic / some of the tech you found

Ok, reasoning:
1) We can't give up yet. Excalibur might be repaired still, we just have to find the right tinker
2) Magic is apparently a thing. Maybe check out Myrrdin? If he's really a mage, approaching him seems like a natural solution.

So... we're basically a vampire. Sounds legit.

[X] You've decided on a callsign to use with your capery: Carmilla.

Belkans had their own Saint?
Maybe it was an actual Sankt Kaiser.
After all, true monarch will not tolerate von Neumann revolutionary AI.

The question becomes if we can cast/create illusion spells. That would give us more time to work on a more permanent solution.

That name has some bad connotations and the only vampire thing we have is Taylor's looks.

If we use a vampire name, our rivals will assume that we have vampire weaknesses and be surprised when we don't. That's something we can use. There are many reasons to choose a callsign, and strict fidelity to your power's theme is one of the most counterproductive ones. "Let me advertise exactly what I can do!" is something we're better off avoiding.

Taylor is a lit nerd, but there isn't exactly an abundance of sympathetic female vamps with decent name recognition. (Thanks to Leviathan, Seras, Arcueid, and Evangeline almost certainly have even less media presence in Bet USA than they do IRL - read: minimal except among weaboos - and Genevieve from Warhammer is only known among that fandom.) If you can find another example, I'll consider it.

You know, I kinda hope that Alexandria has some magical talent. Maybe not a lot, but enough to justify teaching her. It could be fun. As for the name... Hecate.

Bettina, a heroic female vampire from a French novel published in 1820
literally who

I know I just called Taylor a lit nerd, but that doesn't mean that she's read everything either. Even if she's read it, the misdirection doesn't work unless her rivals get the reference too. Besides that, the name itself still has to sound good, and IMO "Bettina" doesn't.

Like you said bevelovent vampire names are hard.

@Tekomandor If we were to go with using a reference to either seras or arcueid as our cape name would you be willing to hardwave so people are getting the vampire reference? And on a siller note can Taylor's eyes devlop glowing red irises when she is doing something big or gets pissed off?
