Just got caught up, and quite enjoying this quest (like most that I read, seriously, the people of SV know how to write)! Am I correct in assuming our dear daughter's human appearance of having starry eyes was partially inspired by SCP-134?
Alas, I find myself caught up just after the closing of the vote. Ah well, there's always the next one.
Just got caught up, and quite enjoying this quest (like most that I read, seriously, the people of SV know how to write)! Am I correct in assuming our dear daughter's human appearance of having starry eyes was partially inspired by SCP-134?
In this world, Eldritch Gods and otherwise are completely linked to the stars. Because they were the first things that evolved after the Big Bang, their bodies became made up of the literal cosmos. Thus why Ana has stars in her eyes. However, as time went on, only big guys like Yog and Hastur kept their cosmic forms.
Most subsequent Eldritch went for a more physical form. This has the advantage of allow them to affect the physical world some what, but makes them vulnerable.
Also, fun fact; There's an SCP Foundation in this world.
And believe it or not, it's an actually nice place to be.
I believe it, actually! 'course, I subscribe to a bit of a more lighter-and-softer SCP canon, at least with regards to the Foundation and its motives. They aren't exactly out there to torture or exterminate the Anomalous-that's the GOC or Chaos Insurgency. They're here to protect-both the world from anomalies and anomalies from the world(and themselves, where appropriate).
Of course, the Serpent's Hand don't call them the Jailers for nothing; a gilded prison is still a prison. But at heart their motives are good, and they aren't any more malevolent to their charges than they strictly need to be. S'how I see it, at any rate.
Also! A thing that occurred to me earlier but slipped my mind until it now did not. But given that it seems the Undead are classified as Mythics rather than Mortals(which I would assume most Undead were in a past life, or their...component parts, anyways), what does this mean re:Lichdom or the like? Are there Mortal Magi who search for/have successfully found ways to transcend humanity into some form of Mythic(undead ala Lich or otherwise), and if so, what does this mean for any Pacts they've made? Would such an individual retain the capacity of Belief, or would they have to form a Pact to reacquire it?
And if these are 'Things to be learned later on', thas fine of course. I am just a curious reader that enjoys worldbuilding, heheh.

There are different types and they are created based on the circumstances of their death.
Ghost and Spirits are made when someone dies with strong regrets or emotions. This anchors them to the material world, and stops them from passing on until they can let go of the things keeping them anchored. This can be anything from wanting to apologize for a heinous act or wanting their killer brought to justice. This comes with the advantage of being a ghost. You are intangible, don't need to eat, can't get hurt, etc. However, if a Ghost or Spirit remains in the material world without finding closure for a long time they can become a Reaver.
Basically think the Nazguls from LOTR.
As for things like Dullahans and Liches, it's actually kind of cruel the way they are made.
The only way to make them is for someone to be right on Death's Door. They've made peace with their death, and are walking right into the pearly gates right now. Then a Mage or Mythic has to come along and be like, "Oh no. You ain't dying yet!" Then they feed a shit ton of magic into the dying person, and they become an Undead. What type is up to the Mage/Mythic, but the person it is done to ceases to be human and becomes a Mythic with everything that entails. The dying person's consent is not needed.
This normally can't be done by the dying person, since it requires Magic which humans are normally locked out of. Mages/Mythics don't do it, because of what it will do them (make them Undead).
This doesn't mean there haven't been cases of Undead being made without a Mage/Mythic being present, but they are few and far between.
"...I didn't know you had it in you," your dance partner says, eyes wide and breathless, as you pick her up from the finishing dip.
"Neither did I," you admit bowing to the applauding crowd gathered before you.
It had started as a normal outing. Having very little cash and no real idea where to take Rivauld, you let her choose where you should go for the day. Even though it didn't show on her face, Ana made sure to let you know that was the right choice. You chalked it up to "female intuition" and made your way outside with both girls.
At first, you thought that it would be something simple like going to the library to read or walking along a riverside.
Then Rivuald directed you towards Downtown.
The rich part of Downtown.
Then she had you park in front a hotel that made your wallet scream, "OH GOD PLEASE NO STOP!"
Rivauld just walked up to the door like she owned the place, while Ana's inquisitive eyes scanned the elegant reception room. She said that it was a perfect chance to study how the "well off" of society live today as opposed to when she was first summoned.
You were sweating bullets at how much you would owe Rivauld for this.
However, Lady Luck smiled upon you this day.
First, it turned out that Rivauld wanted to come here because they were having a Ballroom Dancing Event in one of the reserved rooms. Apparently they do this type of thing every year at this hotel, and she has yet to miss one. What was lucky was that it was free admission.
Then, you were able to walk into the ballroom, and not a single person thought you were out of place. Most people either ignored you or just greeted you as a normal person. Despite the fact that your attire wasn't nearly as elaborate or expensive as the ones you saw on them. You're pretty sure one of their gloves cost enough to feed you for a month.
However, the thing that really cemented your luck was when Rivauld asked you to dance.
It had been a few minutes after you had found an empty table setup along the wall of the room. They had left out a water pitcher along with glasses for when people get parched. Anastasia was sitting in your lap, watching the dance floor with interest. Rivauld was on your left doing the same, except where your daughter's was a gaze of genuine interest, she seemed to be looking at it with a more predatory gaze. It made you a bit uncomfortable, so you started sipping water like a man in a desert.
Then Rivauld asked you to dance with her. You sputtered up the water you had been drinking, and quickly put Ana in a chair at your side. You tried to make up a good excuse that didn't amount to, "I'm a piss poor dancer with two left feet," but Rivauld didn't seem to care either way. She just grabbed you by the arm and all but dragged you onto the dance floor before Ana could do anything.
You have never danced in your entire life. Well, that's not completely true. You weren't a total loser in high school after all. You did manage to get a date to the senior prom, and the both of you danced the night away. Though it was more of the awkward teen dancing that most high schoolers are known for.
But this? This was fucking ballroom dancing! A totally different ballpark!
And yet, somehow, you manage to outdance everyone in the room.
It got to the point where everyone else just stopped to stare at the both of you, as you moved like a couple straight out of a fairytale movie.
And so, here you are, bowing to an assembled crowd of people much more well off than you, who are applauding you like there's no tomorrow.
After three more bows, you make your way back to the table, Rivauld hanging on your right arm. Your pull out her chair and guide her to sit down at your table. Then you move to your seat and collapse into the chair.
It isn't long before Ana jumps into your lap, smiling up at you, "Father! I didn't know you could dance."
"Neither did I sweetie," you say, taking a large swig of water. Rivauld seems to be contemplating something, judging by her hand daintily holding her head as she stares at nothing.
"How did you learn so quickly?" she puts a hand onto the top of your head while taking on an expression of deep concentration, "Spontaneously mastering a skill is not unheard of, but that was almost impeccable dancing."
Thinking back on it, you're not entirely sure why you suddenly knew how to dance like a pro back there. Whenever you search your head for a reason, all you get are perfectly memorized movements that the other patrons were doing before you got on the floor. Every twist, pivot, spin, all of the little movements that make professional dancers so good were suddenly burned into your brain and you don't know why. Kind of reminds you of when you fought that stranger and her headless minion. Could they be connected?
The day goes on, until the sun starts to dip below the horizon outside the windows to indicate the afternoon. You gather up your daughter and date to make your way out the front door. On your way out, you are accosted by no less than ten people. Most of them are young men who say that they're looking for "fresh talent" and that you are the perfect candidate for their agencies. The rest are people who seem to latch onto and try to fast talk their way into your life.
You would've been swamped, if not for Rivauld. She seemed to be a master at telling people to "fuck off" without making it sound like an insult. She stayed by your side the whole way back to your car, helping you fight off vulture after vulture.
On the way back, you offered to give her a ride back home, but she said she was fine to walk. Not wanting to seem pushy, you respected her decision and dropped her off out your house.
She got out, walked around to your side of the car and handed you a piece of paper much like the one with her number on it, "That's my home address."
At your surprised look, she smiles and leans close to your face, "You impressed me greatly today, Howard. I would very much appreciate it if we could get to know each other better."
She gives you a kiss on the cheek, and saunters off down the sidewalk. You stare after her for a good six minutes, before Ana climbs into the passenger seat and closes your mouth for you.
You shake your head to get your bearings, then pull into your driveway. You walk out and wait for Ana to come around and grab your hand to start walking towards the door. On the way, you ask the all important question that this day has been building up to, "So, honey? What do you think of Ms. Rivauld?"
Your daughter taps a finger on her chin before answering, "Well, she's intelligent, a good conversationalist, knows what she wants, and obviously has an interest in you for more than your looks."
"Oh, so you like her then?" thank god. You were worried there for a sec—
"No, I don't."
"What?"
"Father, because I care for your wellbeing, I will be completely honest with you," your daughter says with an uncomfortable amount of seriousness, "Be careful. There's something about your co-worker that doesn't sit right with me. I didn't get a chance to properly sense her, but she's certainly not human. Her presence reminds me of...something, but I can't put my finger on it."
You can tell that she's actually worried for you, so you reach down and cradle her in your arms, "Don't worry, Ana. I'll be fine. I promise."
She bites her lip as you open the door, "Just, be careful, please? And don't hesitate to call me if you get into trouble."
You promise and close your front door behind you as the sun moves under the horizon.
(Date Successful! Rivauld SL Greatly Increased! New Action: Visit Olly! Olly might not be human!)
(Perk Gained: Moves like Jagger: You've got the Skills to pay the Bills! (+15 to Dating!)
It's monday, so you start getting ready to teach your class.
As you do, Ana comes over to you, ready for when you take her to the Harromont's house. She seems to have something on her mind, so you bend down so you're eye level with her, "Something wrong, sweetie?"
"Father, I would like to request that you allow me to leave the house when you're not around or busy," she says without missing a beat.
"Oh, of course," you say, until the implication of the request start to sink in. Then you shout, "What?! Why?!"
Not deterred one bit, Ana continues, "I know that you're worried about me, but do not forget that while I may appear to be a child, the truth is very much the opposite. There are many things that I could actually do on my own that other girls my age can not."
"Well, yes, but what if—"
"And, I am more than capable of protecting myself," to emphasize this, she turns her right arm into the bladed form before swiftly shifting it back.
She's got you there, and the words die in your throat. She is correct, and her argument is sound. Still, some part of you can't help but feel nervous at the prospect of your little girl going out into the world alone.
But...you guess it wouldn't hurt to grant her request.
What's the worst that could happen?

[] Visit Olly: Let's see how she lives, shall we? (Increase Olly SL)
She was pissed when we didn't speak to her before, not making that mistake again, we need our Vampire Girl
[x] Perception: You missed enough paper airplanes coming towards your head to know that you need to better your vision

We did some kind of weird perception thing today, if we can apply it to more things such as combat more easily...
Well, it'd be very useful to say the least
[X] Find those cultist: Maybe she could convince them to back down a bit. (Make contact with Cult.)

Gonna call it here: Olly Rivauld is either a Toreador or Ventrue. Possibly Lasombra, but I think we'd have noticed the lack of reflection by now, and I'm getting more of a Presence vibe than just plain Dominate. One of the High Clans at any rate.

[X] Perception: You missed enough paper airplanes coming towards your head to know that you need to better your vision

and that also seems reasonable enough. Feel like I should vote for something a bit more...flashy, but that's kinda my problem in WoD anyways(always go for Gifts or Disciplines rather than making sure my normal stats are up to snuff) so should prooob'ly avoid that.
As for Anastasia. . .

Mind though, I don't necessarily think she needs get rid of her Cult. They could be very, very useful if properly cultivated. But Ana absolutely should see about getting them to be a bit more subtle, and maaaaybe write up an actual doctrine for them to be following instead of letting them make stuff up. It'd probably be best not to let them get misconceptions about who she is and what she does if she does get to keep her own pet cult. As for Sense Eldritch, eh...Can never be too careful. Plus, while our alert has gone down from the Dullahan Incident, if they actually did spread word we may actually have some new Supernatural neighbors soon. Peaceful peeps who might want the security of A Badass Mofo keeping shit from disturbing the peace, y'know. We DID say the neighborhood is effectively a neutral zone under our protection, after all.

Oh, I never said anything about discrimination. Just calling it in advance that she be a Vampire, and we may be obligated to carry a parasol for her because Fucking Sun. Goddamn hateful eye of Pelor it is.

Well I mean, she could be a succubus or lamia that's good at concealing her less-human-attributes, we don't fully know how those work. Succubus especially given the Social Skillz. I'm just putting my hat in the rink of Vampire(for, admittedly, your aforementioned reasons) and with aforementioned Social Skillz I'm guessing WoD-style Toreador or Ventrue in particular was my entire point on callin' it.
