Sword Art Online Discussion Thread

Now there's a fan theory I haven't heard before.

Is this just a personal one of yours, or one that's been making the rounds before?

It's old as heck. It definitely wasn't true in the prototype for Accel World, but there's enough connection between SAO and Accel World, and Kuroyukihime's actual identity is so ambiguous, that it's perhaps not much of a stretch that a girl who uses two blades, attacks named Vorpal Strike, Starburst Stream and The Eclipse, and has a penchant for dressing all in black, might be of some relationship to a certain black swordsman :V

ME17's translation is out, story is about a popularity vote in the virtual newspapers during the time they were trapped in SAO.

Kibaou won.

Progressive or main canon? Because I thought in main canon Kibaou
attempted a player kill via monste...
It's in that fuzzy area of main canon with callbacks being made to Progressive. Takes place after the Laughing Coffin subjugation.
The short story takes place September 23rd, and volume one started in October.

Bits of worldbuilding from this:

The first was «Weekly Argo», the strategy guide paper published by the distinguished information dealer, Argo the «Rat».

The second was «Shuukan (Weekly) Stories», specializing in literature, with columns and short stories.

And the third was the youngest «Aincrad Shuuhou», boasting the most content as a general-interest newspaper.

Though each and every one of them was published weekly, there was a number of players reading all three since «Weekly» released on Wednesdays, «Stories» on Fridays, and «Shuuhou» on Mondays. Regularly-provisioned textual media were precious in Aincrad with its lack of entertainment.

«Weekly» was 200 cor, «Stories» was 300 cor, and «Shuuhou» was 500 cor.

Well, can't say I'm surprised considering how popular it is. I'm guessing S3 will cover the Fluctlight arcs, seeing as we got up to the Rosario arc before S2 ended?
yup pretty much the story start right from that point. IMO, the whole arc can be wrap up in about 24 episode. Be warn though, there are gonna be a lot more s2e1 - exposition over drinks according to the novel

Having to do the whole of Alicization in a 2-cour series would definitely give it lightning fast pacing compared to the glacial previous seasons. However the Alicization Arc is longer than the rest of Sword Art Online combined, so you never know what they might do :V

If all of Alicization is one season then that's a good thing.

If Alicization is two seasons then they're gonna cock it up.

Because let's face it, Alicization at times is fucking boring. It's exposition for like three LNs, talking over food, it's fucking atrocious. If they cut the fat, then it will work.

If we take the previous seasons as a bookmark of future endeavours, I don't that's very likely.

But here's hoping.

TBF, it's 2 books of exposition, 5 books of characters' back story that nobody give a crap about, 2 books of shounen battles that is really boring at this point and 1 book for harem antics. So, yeah, it's gonna be really really aggravating if they don't do any fat shaving.

Okay, let's go ahead and just say the entire arc takes place in one season.

It's still gonna be one season of SAO, 25 episodes in entirety, where almost the entire cast we've come to know just fucks off. Because as I recall, Alicization was supposed to be its own thing until Kawahara or his publishers decided it should be an SAO thing.

"But they do come back?" Yeah, like fifty LNs later they do. Oh and some of the girls vomit exposition for like three LNs.

Then there's the magic system which only purpose is to remind me there are far better magic systems out there.

It might actually be beneficial to bloat it. And depending how greedy A1 is, that might happen.

What was bad about the magic system of Alicization? All I remember about it was sword skills being only known up to 4-hit ones, with Kirito being able to pull off higher-hit (or just more than one 'school' such as both <<Vertical>> and <<Horizontal>>) being really impressive?
Oh, and there was also an attempted-rape scene somewhere in it, because of course there was.

It's bland and generic. That alone can spell the death of any system. There's nothing about it that was unique. If we lived in a world where A New Hope was the only Star Wars film, then its use of the Force, undefined as it, would still be more interesting.

Wow. So surprising, our special snowflake. :V

Man am I glad to quit reading SAO after the Mother's Rosario(?) arc. I read like a few chapters of Alicization but it was so boring I quit and I don't even remember what the hell I read in those chapters. Something about military presence, generic magic school and some such.

To be fair, anyone who'd gone through the events of SAO would've been in the same boat as Kirito as far as Alicization goes. The sword skills there were basically copied entirely from SAO, IIRC, meaning anyone who remembers how to perform x move could do so... provided they had enough experience or something, as the world enforced limits on you due to that.

So... Diagonal? Using actual three dimensions during swordfighting is supposed to be some great achievement? This has to be some weird translation issue, because it sounds horribly underwhelming.

After Sinon, I fully expect that the only fat they'll remove is the one around girls' thighs, so they can show them even more often.

Horizontal and Vertical are two basic one-handed Sword Skills. It seems likely that it's referring to the four hit Square skills.
