[X] [Ignis]

I want to know what's going on at the temple, I still want more Ilias, and it's been a while since we've had an Ignis thing. This is a powerfully attractive choice.

I must say, as much as I like Ilias, I'm glad the rest of the group doesn't trust her. It's only good sense to not trust the word of an evil fallen goddess. And it is nice they all came together to both comfort Bearen and confront Ilias. This isn't exactly a team, but they are fostering relationships together. And just seeing what everyone does when Bearen isn't in the room. Sure, they act much the same, but that's interesting by itself.

Though, Gorefiend revealing she has an innate detect evil ability is interesting on several levels. It means she could've also detected Bearen's change in alignment. It also means she's aware she's not really evil. I'm sure she'd say something about how that proves the subtlety of her terrible machinations, but ya know.
I'm aware. I've just usually seen it as a negative thing.
Cerebrus Syndrome is one of those things that got used a lot by a lot of of early 2000's media all at once, usually poorly. Mostly because we had a rush of young writers and artists at that time, and so they made mistakes. It's not a bad thing by itself, it just got a bad reputation.

That's not what's going on here anyway. The story has made it clear Bearen hasn't been doing well for a long time, characters like Brynhild had their own troubled past, and that's not to mention what's going on in Fearen right now. Cerebrus Syndrome would require for this to have a longish period of low stakes, light hearted, and disconnected story beats. Here it's clear there were deeper themes at play for a long while, it simply did the smart thing and made the time to introduce the characters and get us invested in them. It's also always been a fully structured story. It has room for lots of monster girl shenanigans and D&D style mini adventures, but they serve as character building and fun diversions. There's still the clear over arching story, and the small bits are because of it.

Yeah, pretty sure TVtrope includes that for Cerberus. syndrome.
TVTropes said:
It can also be intentional, with the lighter mood at the beginning allowing readers to meet and become attached to the characters before the story arcs with the dramatic elements begin.
Though apart from that bit of semantics I agree: this is the trope done right.

Good on him to admit it. In a string of words I never thought I would type: Poor Ilias, she was just trying to help and got smacked around for it.

Thanks to @SpacePaladin for the comm! This is an alt version of chapter 4.9

*Ignis POV*

Mom always said that only the weak cry. A warrior doesn't show emotions except that of fury, rage, and the joy of victory. She had taught you the way of your ancestors, your people, your tribe. From the time when you had been more bestial, less… human, whatever the hell the term was. To when you were now. You learned the prayers, the chants, the traditional methods of hunting. You learned your weapon, broken as it is now. You took all of that, then you were cast out into the wilds in order to become strong. And you did, you became damn strong, but there was always going to be people stronger. The dragon who lived up the mountain, the Lizardmen who always teamed up.

You were fine with that, it was just motivation to get stronger. You didn't agree with much else mom taught you though, and you were damn sure when you had kids they'd be raised differently. Then you had found your husband, and he was… different. It was weird, he showed a lot of emotion for someone so strong, but you kind of liked it. Now though, you frankly didn't know. But you had shoved a good deal of people out of the way to get here. He was your husband, even if he didn't want to admit it.

He looked up at you, a broken look on his face. "Leave."

You stare down at him, then settle down into a crouch, looking him in the eye. "And if I don't?"

"Ignis, don't think I won-"

"Force me to leave?" you finish for him. "Sure, ya could. Yer waaaay stronger than I am. It's why I picked you to be my husband even if you tried to weasel out of it like some form of…" You think for a moment. "Weasel." Then you place a hand on his shoulder. "But you ain't gonna."

Baeran stares at you, not saying anything. So you speak for him. "Because I ain't done nothin', and you don't fuck with people that haven't done anything to you. You're a Paladin and all that."

His expression finally changed to one of annoyance. "And what do you know of being a Paladin?"

You shrug your shoulders. "Not much beyond what you told me, can't read and Fuyao gets pissed whenever I ask. Figured I got the gist of it though, holy warrior, kind of self righteous. Though unlike the Order you've got a decent head on your shoulders."

"... Thank you for the compliment Ignis, now would you kind-"

"To be honest, I mostly wanted to be a Paladin so you'd accept me, though I'm pretty sure you don't care about any of that. You don't seem to enjoy it too much."

"Ignis I-"

"Demon Lord knows I can't beat you in a fight, you proved that well enough. I just want to be useful enough that you keep me around, and don't ditch me like mom did."

Baeran simply stares at you, saying nothing.

"You've been nice to me, real nice. You're going to be my husband, but until then… just talk to me alright? We can punch each other a bit, helps relieve tension. I still want to learn to use that weapon you gave me better anyway." You lean over him, smiling, pushing your breasts up a bit. Trying your best to look sexy like you were taught.

Baeran's eyes, like always, don't waver, matching your gaze as he begins to frown. "Ignis… your concern is kind, but this doesn't involve you in any capacit-"

His words are cut off as you sock him in the jaw.
