[X] Plan: A Burly Sort of Spy

I like this plan, I think getting any scrap of martial training we can get in these perilous times is wise.

We're already proficient at fighting, whereas learning to read in extremely valuable in lot of non-combat situations, so it seems important to start making progress on that front.

We're not that proficient, and definitely don't have any experience fighting in a group that wasn't also paired with receiving bad concussion. Also the lack of riding training is starting to bite us in the ass.

Learning to treat wounds is more immediately beneficial imo. Most large settlements will have someone we can find to teach us to read, but we'll probably need to bandage wounds and make splints well before reading is important to our future.

Also we'll look like a nerd in front of the other squires, trying to read things. It's embarrassing.

Apparently he was not a knight yet, instead introducing himself as the squire of the late Ser Derrick like he did to you, swearing to serve House Tully in his name. There was no comment on this though and Lord Tully took his oath the same way as he did every other before and after.

When all the knights had sworn their oaths, the young man called the room to order once more and then called for specific people to step up. This time, it was an eclectic mix of armsmen, knights and lords with no clear ordering, who all were asked to report about the happenings in the Riverlands.

Much of it you once again lacked the context for as raids on specific villages and towns you had never heard about were reported. The rivers were unsafe with the Ironborn having brought longboats and raiding everything that they could reach. There had been attacks all the way to Harroway's Town and bandits were roaming the countryside. The town of Fairmaket at the Blue Fork had been sacked entirely and now Ironborn were raiding the lands of House Bracken from the ruins.

Further north, things were even worse. The stories of abductions and vile magics being worked in Seagard were nothing new to you, but now the Ironborn apparently started to keep slaves by the hundreds in the city to shore up its defenses and work on improving the portage between Seagard and the Blue Fork.

The Twins had fallen too, which elicited gasps from most of the room and even surprised you. You had talked with people who had been there a few times and you knew that it was deemed very difficult to siege the double keep as one had to do so from both sides of the river.

However, Euron Greyjoy had allegedly used sorcery to badly damage one of those keeps and killing a number of people from the household, including the heir. Lord Frey surrendered after threats to have the keep razed entirely and his entire family clasped in irons to toil in the mines of the Iron Isles.
Okay this is definitely going far differently then canon since outside of sacking a few castles I don't think the Ironborn ever did this much damage, certainly not taking the Twins.

I mean, Stevron Frey (and a few others) dying is definitely something that didn't happen in canon.

Which incidentally means that there's a bit of a succession crisis comming after the war is over as there's a bunch of people who now want to be the new heir to the Twins.

The point of divergence seems to be that Euron Greyjoy is leading the invasion of the Riverlands instead of the assault on Lannisport. Most likely, Theon's older brothers are leading raids on the other kingdoms which could be a good thing (for the rest of Westeros) given that they are not described as good commanders in ASOIAF.

From what you gathered, Victarion is in charge in the Westerlands. Though that campaign likewise overachieved. Instead of only burning the Lannister fleet like in canon, they sacked Lannisport and briefly even attacked Casterly Rock itself. Whatever they are doing though didn't seem to work as well there though and they had to retreat.

The point of divergence is further back than the start of the rebellion.

Yeah the Ironborn are doing a good bit of damage here. First Seagard and now the Twins. Heck in a way it was worse for the Lannisters even if they were able to hurt the Ironborn during the sacking. Though it can be argued they had the initiative but that's starting to go away.
