You forgot that you first get the padding (gambeson) before even considering chain. Padding is top tier for it's cost, but it's still padding.
Soooooo.... no plate armor on turn 2? Shame.Given your financial constraints, you'll definitely not get more than a gambeson and leather skullcap or a bascinet. Armor is expensive.

Nah, that's a hint that sucking up to your commanders can and will benefit you. Pretty much half the trick of being successful as a hedge knight is to figure out who you can convince that you are worth investing resources into.
