Tinker Quest (Current Character: Ajax Washington)

Voting is open
We (or at least our creation) are going to have to go out and grab stuff to make better stuff regardless of our goal, tinkers need materials and we're no different.

Considering that we're going to have the Igors/Kobolds/Ants as assistants, and all of them are able to go out and gather materials (although I guess the ants would be better in that sense than the other 2 options), it's quite debatable whether we have to go out

Sure, at first we're going to have to go on foot and give orders to our pokemon, but I was referring to the long term, when we already have a decent amount of minions and our ultimate creation is already in a decent category

Edit:

All that said, my point wasn't mostly about the legality of what we do, it was about the practicalities. If using our powers to make money is illegal, then yeah, we need to break the law, but very much in a grey market way, not actually being a villain.

We will hardly have a way to earn money, our specialization is based on creating organic minions

Unless the person option wins and we dedicate ourselves to doing private treatments and surgeries to whoever requests it (assuming that the QM allows us to improve people with the improvements we discover for our minions)

I mean, I can think of several ways to make money with a big lizard minion that aren't, y'know, heists or organized crime. Security, product endorsements (like making our lizard a mascot for a local business), having our kobold-y minions make T-shirts in a back room, and so on. Entirely leaving aside the 'join the PRT' possibility, of course, since there are definitely reasons not to do that.

And I wouldn't assume we can't work on people just because we pick a lizard, necessarily, assuming we can do it at all...regrowing limbs (maybe with bonus scales!) seems possible, for instance...it depends on context more than creature type, I'd think. But really, that's not what I mean by making money.

Now you made me think about putting Adidas on the dragon and brand name clothes on the kobolds

That would be really funny, I guess if the lizard option wins I'll end up voting for that kind of thing. Although I have a hard time thinking of a place that would accept such a thing being Brockton Bay... well Brockton Bay

Parian should be using her powers to make money by animating local mascots and similar things at around this point in time. Not quite the same thing, obviously, but it indicates that doing so isn't illegal...or not in an enforced way, anyhow.

Details obviously vary quite a lot depending on exactly what we can do with our power and the situation and a host of other things, but something in that general category should be vaguely possible.

Making money like that isn't impossible, but it sounds boring.

I mean, depending on what our suit is like (and how much skin/feature it covers) and where we do it, it can lead to a lot of interactions

If our suit doesn't cover enough, we'll definitely draw the empire's attention by not being white since it seems pretty much definitive that we'll be "Ajax Washington"

The PRT will definitely send someone if people call because we made a bunch of kobolds start starring in beauty and the beast (or romeo and julietta)

I mean, how we make money doesn't have to have much to do with what we do with our lives. I'd assume that, as mentioned, E88 will probably not take our existence well, but I could also easily see us doing actual superheroics to help people, or a variety of other stuff. Like...'makes money at a day job' is true of most fictional superheroes and it hardly makes them inherently boring.

By the way, we already know how we will hide our inventions or the things we will create to create our minions?

Because it is almost certain that we will have to go to poor or abandoned areas to start building and hide our creations and that has many risks until the kobolds finish growing and can protect the site, and even that has its own complications

I suppose that the ants (if they end up winning) could make underground bases (although I am not very sure how stable that would be), but it does not take away the fact that they will take quite a while to grow

[X] What is your Focus? (This is your main creature; you can create other minor ones, but this is what the vast majority of your efforts will revolve around.)
-[X] A lizard:
Can crawl up a wall, has thick scales, and could possibly be made into a dragon one day. There is something to be said about the ability to have your own dragon or just a creature that can ignore small-arms fire.

Lets make a Hydra,im game.

Oooh, I didn't even think of hydras. That could be very cool. If our tinkering is thematic, the 'lizards regrow their tails' thing could probably be made into regeneration, it's true. More easily than we could get regeneration on other critters (other than an octopus, anyway). That sounds potentially neat...

So many cool ideas for our main minion, I wonder if we can make it able to shapeshift at all? Switching between, like, dragon, hydra, and a few different dinosaur modes seems really sweet if we can pull it off. Dunno how viable that is...probably doable eventually but maybe not any time soon?

-[X] A person: It resembles a person, and that has all the upsides and downsides you think it would. It can handle tools, is somewhat smart, and could even fake being a cape, but a handful of people will be really scared of what it represents.

If we go with Person, will our Prime Minion be able to learn Skills in the same way we can, or, with more advanced Tech, at a faster pace than we can?

Yes it will, one of the major perks of a person is mental augments will be easier and it can use tools, have skills etc
Will it also be able to assist us in Research tasks, given it will eventually have better Skills than us? Because if so, that, right there is probably the most compelling argument for Person over Lizard, it's the option that lets us tech up the fastest.

Like, regardless of what we pick, they're eventually going to be a bulletproof Brute once we've got a stable tech base up and running, but Person would make getting that tech base in the first place that much faster.

Eventually yes, but more in an assistant manor. It doesn't have a Tinker power so it can't directly help with the more finnicky parts but it can act as a lap assistant which can help.

So would a lizard or other animal be able to learn skills eventually and it's just easier for a the person option, or is this 'person option' exclusive?
They can, however the main challenge is that you have less to build off of making upgrading its intelligence to the point it can learn (human brain vs lizard brain) and that most skills are human centric. so trying to teach your lizard most skills will be hard because they simply aren't designed for a lizard to use.
