MEDIC! - Trauma-Team Quest: A Cyberpunk 2020 MedTech Adventure

[ ] [Windfall ] - Hire More Staff. You, Candy, and Widget pulled off a miracle during the bombings, but you're all burnt out and exhausted. Having even just one more pair of hands would have been a literal lifesaver. Maybe you can find space in the budget for one more pair of hands? Maybe look up your old TT contacts who quit? Costs: 2 Funding per Hire. Unlocks: Hiring Subvote, add another member to the Five Crosses Roster. Certain options in the subvote will decide the direction of the next track.
Can you give us more details about this?

Getting another hand on deck will also reduce our money weekly? What positions could we hire someone for? What is our limit of employees? Do we know if any of our old colleagues are available for hiring?

I'm all for the expanded Surgical Suite personally or perhaps a new hire to help avoid burnout for everyone by having more hands on deck.

I've said before that I'm not terribly interested in turning the quest into a spreadsheet simulator, so you don't need to worry about weekly costs. Each upgrade listed is a flat cost. As for what positions are available, that depends on the upgrades you've purchased and where the clinic sits fictionally. There isn't technically an upper limit on employees beyond, y'know, the funding you have to hire them.

As to old colleagues, I'll quote an earlier update:

Mischa smirks at that. "Harder with a fucking camera pointed at the boss. You're scary sometimes, lady." There's a pause, mouth working a little. "Boss says you worked with us for a while. Car 5 right? Wish I had a cushy car like that - not having a med school education does that to a choom. I see Lance in the canteen sometimes, good guy. Especially working two men down."

You pause at that. "Two?" Jesus Wept, what the fuck happened over there? "Who dropped out?" you ask.

"The gunner and the pilot." You recoil at the statement. Zephyr and Minnow left? Zephyr loved flying - it was all she lived for really. What made her risk all that?

Noticing your distress, Mischa frowns. "Did they not tell you? Lance has been taking it on the chin from the higher ups. Risking his leadership position. Six quitters in five years before they complete the first contract is unacceptable to the execs, you know?"
You can only imagine.

"So, why'd they quit?" And why didn't they say anything to you?

Alas, you're met with only a shrug. The grapevine only hangs so long, it seems. "You'd have to ask Lance."

Maybe you will.

Certainly sounds like something's up, right? But as to what happened and how, well, you'd have to ask Lance. :p

So if we were fine with 2 Funds remaining we could go for Ambulance and Hiring, and hope Zephyr is available?

TBH, I was actually hoping to recruit Lance or Minnow... Probably the best part of this quest is that we are in Night City controlling someone who is a moral law-abiding citizen and who has a completely legal job (which is pretty unheard of on this site), but that also means that a backup medic is far more valuable than a gunner...

So if we were fine with 2 Funds remaining we could go for Ambulance and Hiring, and hope Zephyr is available?
To get the Ambulance we need Widget's upgrade.
[ ] [Windfall] - Build a Chopshop for Widget. Widget deserves nothing but the best. And while the majority of your savings have gone into making Five Crosses what it is, it wouldn't be that much work to grab the old burnt out bodega next door and set up a space for Widget to tinker and work on vehicles like she used to. Widget's got most of her tools in a storage unit already - all you would have to do would be buy the building from the local neighborhood association. Unlocked with 5 Little China Rep. Costs: 3 Funding. Unlocks: Widget's Workshop, Chance to provide +1 Clinic Funding per Track

[ ] [Windfall] - Purchase an Ambulance. Requires Widget's Workspace. Having an actual vehicle would allow you and Widget to start expanding your reach and increase the kinds of jobs that you could do, allowing you to reach other districts in the city and perhaps even beyond. Costs: 5 Funding, 3 Funding 2 Medcenter Rep, or 3 Funding and 1 Rank of Nomad Family. Unlocks: Access to other city districts, the ability to take jobs outside of Night City's core.
Meaning that if we get the ambulance this turn we'd be at 1 Funding.

Bear in mind that the chopshop just unlocks the ability to have an ambulance, and the cost is way more than what we have. I'd say to just a ) hire more people so that we avoid burnout and b.) get some edge runner backup

Wouldn't this be so far out of the red? In the black means the money is covering expenses, and I don't think there's an up from there?

Also, I'll support anything that helps out our awesome wife.
Whoops! Well spotted. Sometimes I write more for cadence than accuracy and I forget to fix stuff on the edit. Will be fixed shortly.

Quick question: Does Night City still have tax auditors?

I know the city-state is right-libertarian to the extreme, but do corpos ever get NCPD to take down small businesses for fraud?

(If not, we're probably going to get indebted to someone else and caught in the crossfire of dueling gangs, mobs, and corpos - more than usual anyway.)

God, those upgrades are mad expensive. We're at 7 Funding (Extra Cash), but we can barely afford most of the options despite that.

That said, I think hiring more hands is essential. We saw how being strapped for people pushed the clinic to its limits, so we'll need more hands to make sure we're capable of handling emergencies. That brings us down to 5 Funding (Afloat), and can spend 3 more cash at most before we drop to 2 Funding (Hemorrhaging).

To that end, I think improved security is a must for us. Either physical security or cybersecurity which both costs 2 Funding and brings us down to 3 Funding (Bleeding). We're in a neutral zone between the Tongs, but that doesn't mean there aren't idiots who might decide to hit us anyways.

Alternatively, we can get Widget's Chop Shop. Not only does that make Widget happy, it also might give us +1 Funding per episode which helps us recoup the Chop Shop's losses in 3 Episodes. Now that I've typed it out though, it doesn't really seem worth it since it'll be a long time before we see any returns despite the expenses, especially since it brings us down to 2 Funding (Hemorrhaging).

Though if we get the firewall we apparently get passive Rep income:
Costs: 2 Funding. Unlocks; Net presence for the clinic, +1 Rep to a random district per Track/Episode, slight resistance to Netrunner hacks and interference.
So maybe hold off on the chopshop for a moment but that can be our next big purchase.

[] Plan: Hands and Walls
-[ ] Kai- It's nothing. Now's not the time, not while his sister's still in a coma, lest anyone think you're taking advantage of the kid's talents. Let it lie for now.
-[ ] Charity - Wary. You clawed your way to where you are now through grit and hard work, and there's no such thing as a free lunch, ever. Still, you can't exactly say no to the money.
-[ ] Windfall - Get a Datahost and Basic Firewall. Might as well try and capitalize off of your newfound fame and fully take the business into the 2020's. Get a basic Datahost and Net interface, allowing people to browse your wares, make appointments, and handle payment, all from the comfort of their own homes. It won't be a major piece of ICE or anything, but you're confident you can take at least basic precautions. Costs: 2 Funding. Unlocks; Net presence for the clinic, +1 Rep to a random district per Track/Episode, slight resistance to Netrunner hacks and interference.

Just a headsup @Doordox, you might want to remove the brackets for Windfall. I've seen in other quests that the vote tally doesn't like it when brackets are used in plan votes since it confuses them for task votes too.

That said, I think we should go for Edgerunner Security + More Staff. We're in the part of Little China that no one fought over because there was nothing of value here until we established our clinic, but that doesn't mean we aren't going to experience violent crime. This is Night City after all, we're bound to run into a gonk with a gun too large for his brain eventually.

Then, there's staff. In terms of what the clinic needs right now, more hands is the top of our priority. We only have 1 nurse for crying out loud, and if we want to stop everyone from being constantly overworked, we'll need more people to share that burden.

As for Kai, I like his subplot with his sister so I say we hire the kid part-time as a tech.

It also gives us an additional source of revenue and keeps our significant one happy...
It has a chance of adding funding, and if we buy just about anything else we'll be hemorrhaging money. I'd much rather not force Widget to chose between overwork or ice soup and kibble in order to make our budget work - and we are recommended to keep something in the bank for the future.

She already is happy. It is not as if we make her miserable not getting her this. If anything, splurging will give her anxiety.

@Doordox Is okay if we hold separate votes for the Windfall? So rather than

[] Plan All the Things
-[] [Kai]
-[] [Charity]
-[] [Windfall]

We have this?
[] [Kai]
[] [Charity]
[] [Windfall]
Plan Something
-[] A
-[] B

Since I do not think they need to be connected and lets us avoid snowballing options we do not want.

Oh. Whoops! That was absolutely my intent with this vote, sorry if that was unclear. Plan vote for the upgrade options, with Kai and Charity votes being the most popular of their selections.

Good question! This is worth an informational post all on it's own (I should synthesize a loredump from my CP2020 sources) but the gist without quoting directly from the Night City book - Yep! As a "NewCity" which is combination of PreCollapse civic infrastructure and PostCollapse corporate stewardship Night City civic services are empowered to collect taxes. From my digging, a large chunk of taxes go to the Night City Transit Corporation who run the busses and trains but I need to read more to be sure. They also might not be taxes anymore and might be various licensing fees instead. I think taxes are paid to the city's corporation, of which citizens are a voting/shareholding member alongside corporate interests but it's late and I need to dig through an unsearchable scan of a pdf to find the proper answer. However, as long as you have a level of funding (and barring any fictional consequences like audits from the health board or anything) I'm making the assumption Jeanne can stay ahead of her bills. Quality of life might suffer but the clinic will stay open.

TLDR; Yes, there are still tax auditors because taxes still exist in some form. Who those taxes go to are a matter of further research but as long as Jeanne has a level of funding in the clinic and no one's trying to screw with you Jeanne is taking care of it.

This is sounding increasingly Romanesque, where tax collection could be "gifted" to aristocrats or in this case, whatever corp has control of the district she lives in.

7-4=3 going from extra cash to low in funds again sounds like a really shit way to work our money.

lets try not spending it all at once ya?

[X] Windfall - Improve Clinic Security. You just went public in a very major way, and if there's one thing you can count on in this city, it's gonks being gonks. Best to beef up security before theat happens - reinforce the doors, get better locks, buy a turret, make sure Candy's got some heat under the counter and the range time to be comfortable using it. Won't stop any serious psychos kicking your door in, but should deter all but the most dedicated boostergangs. Costs: 2 Funding. Unlocks: Improved Clinic Security.

you know this is likely to happen soon.

Why not take the Edgerunner version, is literally the same as this one, it cost the same but ic comes with a panic button...
