The Enemy Within (WHF Witch Hunter Quest)

Maybe but I don't want to be the Bird not Bird's toy and that is what that hook pushes us towards.

Not necessarily no. We've been shown in this quest that mutation isn't intrinsically tied to chaos (though certain mutations are caused by it), and I refuse to believe that helping a mutant innately ties us to Tzeentch. If we roll poorly it might make us more pliable (it shouldn't allow tzeentch to manipulate us outright like you seem to be suggesting), but so does helping out other social and political groups and I doubt anyone else here would argue that's a bad thing (depending on the specific politics groups in question of course).

I've also read ahead on the adventure and

There are mutants we meet later on in the adventure that are relatively benign and certainly don't deserve death (at least in my opinion), having a history with mutants could allow us to form a connection with and convince such characters when the show up (or any new mutant characters Maugan Ra decides to introduce ((which I hope they do))

[x] [Change] When the student radicals distribute their pamphlets and the demagogues begin spitting vitriol at the ruling classes, Markus finds himself surprisingly taken by some of their rhetoric. For a noble-born agent of the state, such sympathies are uncomfortable and dangerous, but he cannot help what his heart proclaims. (-1 corruption)
[X] [Blood] After a hard day's work, the stevedores descend on Altdorf's taverns for a hard night's carousing. Markus finds himself getting involved in the inevitable drunken brawls with increasing frequency. More than that, he finds that he has started to look forward to them. (-1 Corruption)
[X] [Blood] The fighting pits and betting arenas of Altdorf are always in need of fresh meat, and more than a few dockside labourers take the chance to earn some extra coin by competing. Markus finds himself beating other men bloody for the roars of the adoring crowd, and enjoying himself far more than he would have thought. (-2 corruption)

Mutation is directly a byproduct of chaos
The big distinction is that Chaos ≠ Chaos Gods. Plenty of non-cultists get mutations from common or undetermined sources.

A person can gain a benign mutation, like a short tail, from being in the light of Morrslieb too long. Is this person deserving of death?
A baby is born with a small horn on its forehead. Should the midwife dash it against the floor?
A man is enslaved by skaven to dig up warpstone, leading to having tentacles instead of fingers. Should he be killed along with his captors?

While these are all hypothetical, plenty of situation like this happen across the Empire. These mutants have not committed any crime except for existing in a world that hates them. It is this hate that drives them into becoming a cultist and studying dark magic.

[X] [Blood] In a somewhat surprising turn of events, Markus makes it through his downtime without ever getting into anything more serious than a brief shoving match. (0 Corruption)
[X] [Excess] Markus keeps his head and cool throughout his time on the docks, regarded by his fellow labourers as a bit of a killjoy, for all that they appreciate having someone sober to watch over them. (0 corruption)
[X] [Decay] Markus remains motivated and diligent throughout his time among the common folk. (0 corruption)
[X] [Change] With the mutant edict, it is illegal to persecute those whose flesh betrays them, but not all within the church or state agree. Moved by principle, Markus ends up killing a zealous priest in order to defend a mutant from the pyre, an act that may bring his entire future career - perhaps even his life - into jeopardy if it becomes known. (-3 corruption)

Blood and Excess are hands down the most pointless options. It's basic indulgence with no meaning, nothing to do with the story or the character. Decay is a little better, but still not something particularly relevant. Change strikes right to the core of something major that Markus is struggling with and has strong relevance to the story. That's what I want to read about and what I want the story to focus on. The other options do not provide anything close to a sufficient mechanical or story reason to justify the moral degradation. It's just clutter.

Also, losing corruption just by sleeping or relaxing, as well as just taking our time to do stuff is the best kind of Dark Whisper. Truly Grandpappy Nurgle is the best!

[X] [Excess] Markus develops a serious drinking habit during his time on the docks, impressing his peers with his ability to stay relatively coherent after downing enough ale to sedate a horse. He finds the prospect of being able to forget his woes for a night remarkably comforting. (-1 corruption)

Taking any of the -3 points options takes us to close to the Dark God in question and while I really can't see how doing what the Whispers of the Four want will lessen their hold on our boy's soul I don't think it's a good idea for his mental health and other things to really dive headfirst in to any of the Chaos options presented. We are supposed to be trying to lose corruption points after all not pick up traits that make it easier for one of the Four to manipulate us and the things around Markus.

Markus has the eyes of a Greater Daemon on he and needs solid Faith if he is to resist the Machinations of such a monster. Mutations and change are things Tzeentch is all about and we still have not worked out how Markus really feels about the edict so he is the most vulnerable to Chaos influence from that direction.

We are trying to shed corruption points not pick up traits that make us more likely to get them more easily after all.

This smells like a trap.

Markus finds himself beating other men bloody for the roars of the adoring crowd, and enjoying himself far more than he would have thought. (-2 corruption)
[X] [Excess] While still not convinced he is worthy of love, Markus finds indulging baser needs far more easy to justify. He takes lovers heedlessly and often, drowning himself in desire, caring nothing for anything beyond this night and this indulgence. It means nothing. (-2 corruption)
[X] [Decay] One sees and hears all manner of things on the Altdorf docklands, things that might be dangerous to care about, and what starts as simple prudence becomes a growing sense of numb fatalism to the world and its troubles. Why wear yourself ragged worrying about what you cannot change? (-2 corruption)
[X] [Change] Finding himself increasingly uncomfortable with his enforced idleness, Markus throws himself into supporting and aiding a number of different social movements and political groups. It is deeply disquieting to him to discover that such pursuits bring him just as much satisfaction as his service to Sigmar did… was it always thus? Was his faith never more than a convenient cause to dedicate himself to? (-2 corruption)

Then why walk into it by taking more then five subtractions of corruption points? We should not give the Dark Powers any more influence then is need to somehow lower our corruption points. We listen to many Dark Whispers and we will lose the support of Sigmar I am sure which Markus will need a lot of in the battles to come.

Blood and Excess are hands down the most pointless options. It's basic indulgence with no meaning, nothing to do with the story or the character. The goal is to lose corruption points not to fall face first into what the Architect of Fate would want. That choice is but the first step on the road to becoming the Bird monster's pawn and that is not a good fate.

The big distinction is that Chaos ≠ Chaos Gods. Plenty of non-cultists get mutations from common or undetermined sources.

Those are all mutations caused by exposure to the warping effects of Chaos. Warpstone is literally solidified Dark Magic and causes death and mutation in all living things with out it's power being contained. Morrslieb is literally the Evil Moon whose light can turn unprotected humans into a full on Beastmen in not much time at all at times.

Their are mutations that are a clear result of Dark Power and thus are a sign that the Ruinous Powers have a hold on that persons body and soul. Someone born with a Club Foot is most likely suffering from a congenital birth defect. Someone who for example has had their hands turned into Tentacles by warpstone is not someone that can be helped as that would probably count as a major mutation and thus could not be reversed. The best you can do for a person like that is mercy to save their soul as that body is already falling to corruption.

That choice is saving an innocent from the pyre. Your argument is disgusting. We will be under no obligation to become a Chaos worshipper just because we chose to be a good person at one point in our past.

The best you can do for a person like that is mercy to save their soul as that body is already falling to corruption.
Cease these degenerate arguments please. No, killing a mutant is not the best thing you can do for them. Stop agreeing with in-setting bad people who make the same immoral arguments.

At first sight, a -1 on all seems ok. There are different personal consequences for each option though:

Blood 1: It's ok, a good bar scrap now and then is not going to turn Markus into a bloodthirsty fiend. If this was the Fallen London series, it would net us Renown:The Docks.

Excess 1: a strong drinking habit; Excess 2: whoring himself out. ...We would all like for Marcus to live his sexuality with a person that cares for him, but this is not the way. The options also make him vulnerable in the future, to poisoning (the former) or to deception (the latter). So I would favor either 0 or 1.

Decay 1: it means just doing what he is meant to do in this period: rest for a while, and appreciate it. As much as I find Nurgle the most abominable of the 4, this is the option that does not leave Markus with a vice, and simply means he is on holiday; while still working at the docks, so it's not like he's going to become a plague-riddled lazybag.

Change 1, or even 2: listen to idealism of the young and pleas of the common people. So we do not lose track of Verena and the flame of justice in his heart, so to speak. I would not take 3, lest that flame becomes the one of a Flamer of Tzeench. He would risk not being a Witch Hunter anymore, and in circumstances that may have been architected by the Bad Bird.

Your argument is awful. You believe that we should not have faced the daemon in the sewers. You believe that we should have let the woman in the first update burn because killing the merchant negatively impacted Markus' career. You believe that we should have let the ritual in Bogenhafen go off because Tzeentch engineered that ritual.

We have the opportunity to save an innocent from the pyre and lose Corruption points for it. That is good. Your argument that we should not fight daemons, that we should let madmen execute innocents for the sake of our career, that we should stay away from circumstances architected by Chaos, is awful.

We currently have 5 corruption points as per the QM, I'd like to at least remove all of them if possible. Doing one in each category guarantees that we'll still have at least one corruption point. Not a big deal but we're likely to run into other cults and daemons that will increase it further, so we should use this chance to lower it as much as possible. We also have the rare opportunity to acquire free XP that we can use to improve our abilities and stats (some of which can give us resistance to corruption). Also to note, just because the Gods will to quote the QM "attempt to influence Markus" doesn't necessarily mean that influence will take the form of corruption, it's possible -3 change action is meant to attempt to undermine his station as a witch hunter. Which is dangerous for our character but not a certainty, we can use our status as a witch hunter along with our newly gained influence with Teugen to cover it up.

Mutations are a domain all chaos gods dwell in to one extent or another, that doesn't mean that all mutants are tied to the chaos gods. As I brought up before.

The action does shed corruption points, a whole lot of them in fact. We don't know what trait Markus will receive for each of these actions and whether or not said trait will make him more vulnerable to Corruption. For example, the Blood -3 option could make us bloodthirsty, it could also give us a reputation as a cruel and abusive witch hunter making gangs and the underbelly of settlements we visit less likely to help us or worse actively impede us. While the latter would be a detriment it doesn't make us more vulnerable to chaos corruption.

All the three pointers have side effects other than the direct influence of their alligned Chaos god. They are all designed to wear down Markus's principles and mental barriers.

For example. Blood enhances Markus's violent tendencies. But it also ties Markus to one of Altdorf's brutal gangs. Something that can very well be used against him. Nevermind that it very well might end up with him murdering some (innocent-ish) folk in cold blood. Gang Wars aren't nice. That's the kind of thing that would end up haunting him, or worse something he'll rationalize away.

Same with the Change option. The danger isn't just to Markus's reputation if it comes out he did it. It is also the option that further pits Markus against the Cult of Sigmar. Which has really bad synergy with Markus' unadressed crisis of faith. It also enhances his vigilante tendencies to be exploited later.

Tzeench has overall featured very prominently in the campaign thus far. We've seen the Ordo, but also the Purple Hand. And now the Mutant Edict is brought up in relation to his strongest Dark Whisper? That seems very sus. Out of all the Whispers to go all-in on, Change is likely the most dangerous because he seems to be our main opponent for the rest of the campaign. Giving him of all gods more hooks when his minions and style of corruption is going to be most frequent seems like a very bad idea.

There is no doubt that it is the most dangerous option of all three, but at the end of the day, it's business as usual. Throughout The Enemy Within, we will be fighting Tzeentch, getting exposed to corruption, saving lives, and butting heads with the institutions of the Empire. Tell me, what do you want to do if we find out that a Chaos cult intends to hurt innocent people? Do you think we should let them because fighting the cultists exposes us to corruption? Should we permit the Cult of Sigmar to abuse people because to stop them would be disloyal? Is that the kind of person you want Markus to be?

Did you not read what I have said, their are mutations and defects that are not caused by the influence of the Four or concentrated Dark Magic like Warpstone and thus should not be persecuted for just existing. Once a good portion of both your arms have become Tentacles you have gone pretty far beyond a benign birth defect.

When you have gotten to the point that your hands have become Tentacles their is not much that can be done for you. What would be your cut of point be and how would you suggest a person with their lower arms turned into Tentacles be made a functional member of Imperial Society in the given situation. You could try cutting of the Tentacles and then using the Divine Magic of Shallya and the Green Wind to regenerate their arms as they were before they were changed but I doubt something like that is possible.

Once you have been warped bodily you are much more vulnerable to having it happen again and again and their is not much that can be done about it.

Your argument is disgusting. You believe that we should not have faced the daemon in the sewers. You believe that we should have let the woman in the first update burn because killing the merchant negatively impacted Markus' career. Moved by principle, Markus ends up killing a zealous priest in order to defend a mutant from the pyre, an act that may bring his entire future career - perhaps even his life - into jeopardy if it becomes known. (-3 corruption)

Okay One calm down, Two how in the world does not wanting to do something the Dark Whispers of Tzeentch push us to do mean that Netos would not want to have done something about the Daemon in the Sewers or not help the women we saved in the first update.

Third nothing about the option below says the Mutant in question is innocent or guilty or even how much they have been mutated in body let alone spirit.

If you want to pick that option you can but please don't make claims about things that aren't said in the option.

Mutations are a domain all chaos gods dwell in to one extent or another, that doesn't mean that all mutants are tied to the chaos gods. As I brought up before

We can get rid of the corruption points with out taking any of the -3 options and thus I think we should avoid them.

All actions taken by the Dark Gods have the goal of corrupting a person whether it happens slowly or quickly. Our character is already suffering from a crisis of faith and and you think that having Markus who we have played as someone who cares about the truth and doing things the right way kill a priest to save a Mutant Tzeentch wants saved and a then trying to use our position to hide that action and ask the Merchant who has influence with the Nobility of Reikland not the Cult of Sigmar for help would leave us less vulnerable to the Deceiver's influence, why?

I have also said multiple times that not all things that could be considered mutations mean you are already in the Thrall of the Dark Gods. I just don't think that having your lower arms become Tentacles counts as a mundane Mutation when it was caused by long term exposure to Warpstone which is Dark Magic in solid form. Past a certain point a Mutant is screwed one way our the other and the Human Forces of Order do not have a person like Alarial the Radiant who can reverse mutations by touching a person although it was only temporary.

Should we permit the Cult of Sigmar to abuse people because to do otherwise would be disloyal? Is that the kind of person you want Markus to be?

Nothing he said suggests he does not want to fight any cultists we find or let people get abused. He is pointing out that doing what the Deceiver would want us to do and thus picking up traits that make us less trusted by our allies and more like his followers makes us more vulnerable to his influencing Markus further and also harder to fight his cultists Ann's agents.

We already had a literal Cultist walk up to us and give us a Handshake that left Markus's hand covered in Purple "Ink" and don't know what the after effects have been from that. Markus has Tzeentch's servants watching him and a being willing to act right in front of him which we need avoid making easier for them. I can bet you they will get involved in the -3 points option for Tzeentch to try and drag him further from the light with their action which will be easier if we are listening to their Master Whispers.

Which is exactly why it was so devious of Maugan to make Tzeench's option ones that appeal so much to the moral & political biases of the SV voterbase.
It really is something. Blood has us, the by the book lawbringer, go on a murder spree during a gang war. Excess has us fall so deep into addiction that we almost completely lose ourselves if not for outside intervention. Decay has us plagued and fall into complete nihilism.

But the Change three pointer has us just be the hero who stands up for his ideals and the law. Surely that can't be as bad as the other three right?
