Y1E0.1 - Prologue

Gally

Got the whole word talking King Kiba
Enter ARASHI and FURUTA, stage right. Each wears a school uniform of dark blue with white ties. On their breasts is a black mountain tipped in pink.

ARASHI
All the lands have their story of the birth of magic! In beautiful Japan, it is said that when Ninigi descended to the earth from heaven, he came first to the peak of Mount Hiyari!

FURUTA
It was there he first saw his bride, Konohanasakura-hime, as she lay in the shade of the cherry blossoms! He spoke his love to her, and that love was known forever!

Enter HARADA and NEZU, stage left. Each wears a female version of Arashi and Furuta's uniforms.

HARADA
Ninigi and Konohanasakura-hime were wed, and great celebration was held all across the world!

NEZU
So moved were the gods by the beauty of the day that they unleashed their magic from where they held it in the sky, a gift to all mankind!

ARASHI
Each year a new class of magi ascends the mountain to learn of the power and the duties bestowed upon them by that gift!

FURUTA
We ride the train now though, thank god.

ARASHI, HARADA, and NEZU all stare at him.

FURUTA
What? It's a lot of stairs.

HARADA
Just, for once, could you -

ARASHI
Distant mountain peak.

HARADA
What? Oh, this year, a new face stares out the window of the train, eyes fixed upon that distant mountain peak!

NEZU
And remembers it is said that any who confess their love in the shade of its cherry blossoms will know that love forever!

Exit ARASHI and FURUTA, stage right. Exit HARADA and NEZU, stage left.

SAKURA KISS
Year 1

A train snakes through the Japanese countryside, a silver knife through great swathes of springtime color. In it sits you. A boy, a magi. Or rather, someone who will one day be a magi. Hopefully. If you can survive three years of high school. Which at this point, seems as distant a prospect as you've ever heard.

In the distance the mountain looms, enormous. Even from here you can see the pink of cherry blossoms at the peak. All your life you have heard of Hiyari, but the sight of it is alien to you. It is enormous, and unknowable.

The door behind you slides open and Ban Naoya ends your solitude. His face, at least, is familiar. Heir to the Ban family empire, one day he will rule the third-largest clan of magi in Japan. Yet always he has been there by your side, the closest thing to a brother you've ever had. He wears his usual half smile, as if he can't quite decide how he feels so he might as well be happy, as he sits across from you and looks out the window.

"I thought I should warn you," he says abruptly. "Before the ambush."

"What?" You ask. But the door slides open again before Ban can clarify.

There are two of them, one short and dark and neat, the other tall and fair and unruly. Both wear the Hiyari uniform, white ties marking them as first years.

"Ban," says the one who is short and dark and neat. "You ran away!"

"I made a tactical retreat," Ban says. He catches your eye and nods to the boy. "This is Arashi Hatsu."

"And this waste of space," Arashi says, nodding to the one who is tall and fair and unruly, "is Furuta Ren."

Furuta takes the insult in stride. "We know who you are though," he says. "Takami Yuta."

[X] Third son of clan Takami
Tenth most powerful of the magi clans. Your brothers have assumed the burdens of leadership, leaving you free. Or adrift, depending on how you look at it.

[] Heir of clan Takami
They don't bother ranking the lesser clans. Your name has weight, but only barely.

[] Son of Takami
Your parents are tradesmen, and serve their lords Ban loyally. Never before has a Takami wielded magic, but these are modern days.

Ban's smile twists to worry. "Ah, lay off it," he says to the pair. "Don't pay them any mind, Yuta. They're both too dramatic for their own goods."

[] "It's never too early to start making friends."
+10 Confidence. You're outgoing, excitable, volatile.

[X] "A little drama does us good."
+10 Charm. You're friendly, charismatic, shallow.

[] "It'll take more than that to bother me."
+10 Cool. You're reserved, relaxed, detached.

[] "They're just still still learning to be friendly."
+10 Compassion. You're empathetic, warm, vulnerable.

[] "They just like to hear themselves talk."
+10 Cynicism. You're sarcastic, perceptive, suspicious.

Dialogue choices will occasionally grant bonuses to one or two of the five traits: Confidence, Charm, Cool, Compassion, and Cynicism. The values of these traits will govern Takami's personality, allowing player choice to have a consistent impact on his character without putting every line of dialogue up to a vote.

The most important trait is the highest, or primary, which determines Takami's instincts and overall mood. The primary trait is modified by the second-highest trait, or secondary, allowing for greater variety within each personality type.

Personality is not a stat system representing the objective value of each trait – what matters is not the total value of a trait, but its proportion of Takami's total trait value. A Takami with a Compassion of 20 is not necessarily particularly compassionate, or even more compassionate than a Takami with a Compassion of 10.

Mechanics
Mechanics
Sakura Kiss is primarily a time management quest. Each year is broken up into 48 events, with each event typically separated by roughly one week. Each event will progress the route of a chosen heroine, and at the end of each year, the heroines will re-evaluate their relationship with you based on how much (and how) you engaged with their route.

A Takami with a Compassion of 20 is not necessarily particularly compassionate, or even more compassionate than a Takama with a Compassion of 10.
The primary gameplay of Sakura Kiss is choosing which available event to trigger next. Events can be brief, single scenes, or minor short stories with multiple choices, but each represents an interaction with a heroine that is somehow significant to her relationship with Takami.

[Heroine] [Weeks until event expires] [A brief description of the scene]

Once the event expires, it disappears, and you lose your opportunity to participate. Sometimes, this means the event never occurs. Sometimes, it occurs without you.
Sometimes, multiple events will cover the same story beats, creating events which are mutually exclusive with each other. This will most often, but not always, happen with the same heroine, representing different circumstances under which Takami might experience the same interaction. Split events are marked in the event selection with an asterisk, with different numbers representing different split events. Choosing a split event will immediately close the other event(s) that share the same number of asterisks.

Votes for a split event will not pool - they are considered separate events for the purposes of voting.

Oh hey, a new quest by one of my favorite QMs. Welcome back!

[X] Third son of clan Takami

[X] A little drama does us good."
+10 Charm. You're friendly, charismatic, shallow.

I like the idea of a romance quest where the main character is popular and approachable but hard to form true friendships with because he never lets himself be vulnerable enough to be known.

Making him a powerful noble just helps justify that.

Welcome back! Excited to see where this goes!

[X] Third son of clan Takami

I like the fact that this brings in the brothers as potential characters in the future.

[X] "A little drama does us good."

I like the trait system for naturally creating character arcs, sometimes I feel like Quest Protags feel a bit too static because a lot of quest mechanics encourage going all in on a specific build or skillset, which naturally reflects in the protags personality.

Y1E0.2 - Prologue
"A little drama does us good," you tell Ban, flashing Arashi and Furuta a smile. "Beats boredom."

"Oh, my heart's aflutter," Furuta says, tapping his fingers rapidly on his chest.

"It is nice to be appreciated for what we bring to the table," Arashi. "You could learn from him, Ban."

Ban rolls his eyes. "Should've known he'd have you two eating out of his hand."

You just smile guilelessly at him. As the third son of the tenth most powerful magi clan in the country, your life has been an endless procession of polite small talk while the real business happens elsewhere. Ingratiating yourself with others has essentially been your job since you were old enough to carry a conversation. For as close as the two of you are, it's never been the same for Ban. People flock to him because of his birth – he's never really had to work to keep them happy.

If he were anyone other than Ban Naoya, that might've made him cold, or arrogant. Instead you think it mostly makes him sad.

"Ah, ah, ah, you can see them from here!" Furuta shouts, the sound enormous in the now-cramped compartment. His face is pressed tight against the glass. "It's already summer, but they're still so pretty…"

"Sorry, he's weird about the cherry blossoms," Arashi says. "Really, really thinks they're magic."

"And Arashi is just a stick in the mud with a big stone heart," Furuta says. "I don't believe they're magic, okay? I know they are. My clan cousin had a friend who met his wife at Hiyari, and it worked for them!" He looks to Ban, then you. "What about you guys? You're with me, right?"

Ban shrugs. "Belief is magic," he says, "so if enough magi believe it, it really can be true."

The most noncommittal answer in the universe. You lean your forehead against the window and look up at the pink that paints the mountaintop. Furuta is right – spring has already faded into summer, leaving the peak of the trees' beauty behind, but even still the sight is breathtaking. "I don't know if it's real," you say, "but...

[] "I'd really like to try it."
+5 Confidence. The classic flirt, upfront and outspoken.

[] "I don't think I'd need it."
+5 Cool. Still a flirt, but also a mystery.

[X] "It gives people courage."
+5 Compassion. A genuine people person.

[] "People will believe anything."
+5 Cynicism. He's always smiling, but there's an edge to it.

Summer

Those first days at Hiyari are a rush of color and noise and people. The summer heat is stifling, lessened only briefly by the rare breeze coming in off the ocean, and each day is packed full with meetings and greetings and orientations. You're moved into the first year dorms, large traditionally built complexes like the ones you grew up in on your family's estates. Ban is your roommate, which you consider an excellent deal because he's a neat freak and doesn't mind doing most of your share of the work.

There are more magi here than you have ever before seen in one place, and every day the halls run thick with spellwork. Animated furniture lumbers from room to room, filing cabinets talking to each other with series of slamming drawers as they move. Students shoot jets of light from their fingers, embroiling half the school in an elaborate game of magi's tag. Sometimes you think you hear music drifting airily through the hallways, even though the orchestra room is on the other side of campus.

It's overwhelming, in its way, but you're not totally unprepared. Both your parents and both your brothers before you attended school in these hallowed halls, and you were raised on stories of it. And when the initial hectic sprint fades, you find yourself acclimating to the strange new rhythm of your life.

It is all just prologue. Looking back, you would say that your days at Hiyari did not really begin until…

[] [?????] [3] You finally decide to follow the music.
[] [?????] [3] Ban gets mugged at the vending machines.
[X] [?????] [2] You meet the angel of Hiyari's halls.
[] [?????] [4] You get a lesson in noblesse oblige
