The Enemy Within (WHF Witch Hunter Quest)

[X] [Goetrin] Disgrace. Graf von Saponatheim will be sending a representative to the town, and you expect they will be eager to be seen 'cleaning up' the town. Goetrin will likely be stripped of command and sent home in disgrace, tarnished with this failure in the eyes of his peers.

[X] [Edel] Incompetent. You will make the necessary reports through the cult hierarchy to make it clear to the Arch Lectors the scale of Edel's failure. Likely he will be quietly 'promoted' to some forgotten corner of a distant abbey and a more appropriate high priest appointed. Perhaps Sigiwalt would like the job.

[x] [Teugen] Repaid. You will have a quiet word with the councilman, and make him see the wisdom of burying the hatchet. His wealth, and his connections among the nobility of Reikland and beyond, will be of great help to you and your agents in the future.

Actually since I just realised I forgot to roll when writing the update, I'll use this post to roll for Markus' resistance tests against corruption. The first is a moderate exposure, for fighting a daemon, and the second is a major exposure, for the Eye. Both are tested against Cool, which is 61.

EDIT: Markus resists the first incidence of corruption, and then gets 3 corruption points from being exposed to the direct attention of a Greater Daemon.
Maugan Ra threw 2 100-faced dice. Reason: Corruption rolls Total: 120

[X] [Other] Arrange a fitting reward for Adhema and Ozzy.
[X] [Other] Give a glowing report on Sigiwalt and recommend that he be promoted.
[X] [Other] Arrange to pay for the murdered woman's funeral and rest in the nearest Garden of Morr.
[X] [Other] Arrest and investigate the Stevedores directly involved with guarding the ritual site.
[X] [Other] Enjoy the Schaffenfest with your companions while it still lasts.
[X] [Other] Return to the High Temple of Sigmar and spend some time praying for your god's guidance. You came face to face with a formidable servant of the Great Enemy and perhaps came out not unscathed. Clear you mind, find your focus, reflect. Fortify your soul to face the trails ahead. Maybe now, with you holy duty complete, you will find a semblance of peace and answers.

Added this one: Return to the High Temple. We need to do something about Markus' doubts and growing number of corruption points. Maybe we even get a godly intervention if Maugan feels charitable.

Any chance of using Fortune to reroll that second Test?

Based on what weve seen of her, Im guessing Spatin will end up with Aqshy (fire and passion) based on her personality, or Azyr (weather and inspiration) based on the one spell we saw her do being clariaudience. But we've only known her for like 2 days so i wouldnt be surprised unless she ends up with Shyish

It would be pretty funny to avoid getting corrupted by a Greater Daemon of Tzeentch with a fortune point we got from getting blasted with the Lore of Tzeentch

Honestly, i voted to burn Edel for one simple reason:

I'm holding him to higher standards. It's his job to shepard his flock, and he failed. Greviously, at that. He's a Priest of Sigmar, he should know better then a guard captain or a merchant, of how dangerous this could've been, but he let his eyes be blinded by gold. So a example will be made.

Doesn't Markus also lose corruption for "foiling the schemes of the Dark Gods"?

I am wondering if it might be worthwhile to use the Ranaldians to help remove remaining chaotic influence among the merchants, considering how they are falling under his purview, and that they also missed what was going. And we got their address after all.

[X] [Edel] Humbled. You will speak privately to Edel and make it clear how thoroughly you can ruin him, and how closely you will be observing reports from your local sources. He will seize this chance with desperate hands and lend his weight to all of your other actions, now and in the future.

Guy was set up to fail! He might be dumb but he's early career and was picked to be a patsy who didn't know any better.

We do not have the evidence to prove he is a knowing heretic.

However. As several other people have said, when a witch hunter reports cult activity, you have an obligation to investigate that activity. No matter how much you distrust the witch hunter.

If he'd sneered at Markus, thrown him in jail, and then led a few squads to the ritual site, I would ignore all of his distrust and insults. The problem is not that he disregarded our nebulous legal authority. The problem is not that he treated Markus badly. The problem is that he did not do his job.

The most important part of a court-martial is not punishing the guilty party. The most important part is establishing a clear precedent. We want any future garrison commander to understand that there is a price to be paid for ignoring reports of cult activity.

He's not a heretic. Honestly, I don't understand the people who want to make the accusation. Markus is not the kind of witch hunter who uses accusations of heresy as a weapon against his political enemies.

Edel is an incompetent. Before he cleared his buddies on the merchant council, he needed to be sure that those buddies were not up to some serious heresy. This isn't about being a good person; even if Edel is seriously corrupt, he has to know what's going on. He didn't.

[X] [Teugen] Repaid. You will have a quiet word with the councilman, and make him see the wisdom of burying the hatchet. His wealth, and his connections among the nobility of Reikland and beyond, will be of great help to you and your agents in the future.

Teugen seems like a pretty bad human being. However, he is not charged with protecting the people of his town from the Dark Gods. That responsibility lies with Edel and Goetrin.

The reality of our work is that we need allies in high places. As we've seen, the Empire works more on who you know than on what you know. We have to start building political connections so that we can do our job. If that seems like a bad system, it is. But you work with the world you have, not the world you would like.

I agree with most of your post, but regarding this: the reason I voted for Retirement was that it is the option where we get to pick who gets the post.

He does not - removing corruption points through absolution specifically refers to thwarting the schemes of the dark gods by destroying their temples or profane relics. It's a symbolic sort of thing, you reduce their material presence in the world in order to reduce their spiritual presence in your soul.

On a narrative level, this restriction exists to maintain the basic genre conceit of 'those who fight monsters may all too easily become them'. You spend a lot of time getting in close with chaos and its minions, you risk your soul just as much as your body. That doesn't work if just defeating anything the dark gods or their minions want to do is enough to cleanse your soul.

If a Jade Magister is out, then the only one who can heal Max in a timely manner is a Blessed Priest(ess) of Shallya using the Shallya's Tears miracle.

In regards to our corruption points... Aside from accepting Dark Whispers, we can get rid of them with Absolution. Acts of extreme piety, things that spite the dark gods, or actions that earn divine favor. Given all that has happened, secluding ourselves in either the Grand Temple or Sigiwalt's smaller chapel might count. Either way, we need Markus in a better headspace.

Though now that I think about it. @Maugan Ra Given that this scheme was hundreds of years in the making and would have summond both a Chaos Gate and a Lord of Change if it had succeeded. Would thwarting the ritual itself be enough to earn a point of Absolution?

Edit: Ninja'd

You got ninjad by the answer xD

Hmm
I feel like preventing the opening of a portal to the Realms of Chaos ought to qualify as reducing Chaos's presence in the material world

But that's ultimately up to you as the GM

Markus's clearing of the sewer temple and rendering it unsuitable for use didn't count either
I suppose because he didn't go all the way with dismantling and consecrating it?

Strictly speaking the core rulebook puts encountering ordinary cultists as a corrupting influence, which always felt a bit much for a system where characters might only be able to take 5 to 7 points of Corruption

Shouldn't we have denied Chaos the Ring of Opsianon by dealing with Gideon?

Rendering an Artifact "safe" and out of Chaos' reach is also noted as something that can earn you an Absolution point. I'd argue it counts given how beneficial its effects are to a daemon specialized in infiltration (or any daemon really).
