The Enemy Within (WHF Witch Hunter Quest)

[X] Obey High Priest Edel

I suspect that the High Priest here is compromised by the merchant families' money. To fill the temple with images of local figures, most of them merchants, instead of Emperors and Saints tells us who's backing Edel.

And yet, procedure must be followed if we are to avoid harming the innocent of Sigmar's flock. The evidence we have on hand isn't actually enough to convict anyone on, so a raid sounds very premature to me. Not only that but angering the judge of the trial when we have no way of finding another impartial judge is a recipe for losing the court case.

We just invested into a lot of skills regarding investigation, so I say we put them to use in this interview, see where it leads us. Markus can be a pretty intimidating man after all, and after the points we invested into Law, Perception, Intuit, and Chaos Lore, potentially pretty hawkeyed when it comes to lies and obfuscation.

All in all, as a Witch Hunter, it's part of our duty to avoid doing unnecessary harm. Sure, this may alarm the cultists, but the chaos of the state troops mustering when the town is already over capacity and ungovernable by law enforcement thanks to the festival would cause so much confusion and death that the cult would be better able to flee justice. Best to keep this quiet and discreet for now, until we're sure who we need to go after.

can concern for the law truly be allowed to bind your hands in such a situation?
Letting concern for the law bind him is what I like about Markus.
Besides, it's not like we're forbidden from following other leads while that's happening. There is still plenty of pressing stuff on Markus's plate to do in the meantime so no time is getting wasted. Like the people out to murder him who violently killed someone to send a message.

The Emperor overstepped his boundary and ventured into the realm of tyranny.

We shall not do the same.

We have enough evidence of Chaos involvement in the family, yet the legal authority demands a trial.
Do we? Let's review our main pieces of evidence.
  • A bright purple silk handkerchief stitched with golden thread, the kind only bought by nobles and rich merchants, with the initials F.S.
  • A hollow copper ring was found in the cult basement, forged for the Steinhäger family a year ago even if the records of the commission were lost.
It's true that these were found in the scene of the crime, but there's no actual indication that the handkerchief belongs to a Steinhäger, that one of their own placed it there, or that S.F. is even supposed to be a name. Markus assumes it's supposed to stand for a name because that's how it's usually done, but assumption isn't fact, especially when we're talking cults with secret codes, esoteric practices and such.

The same problem goes with the copper ring. Yes, we have the testimony of the Metalworker's Guild that the Steinhägers had this unique piece forged and no one else, but we have 0 evidence to indicate the Steinhägers put it there. It could very much have been stolen from them and we'd have no evidence to say otherwise to keep them from weaseling their way out of the trial.

We need to do our due diligence first before resorting to drastic action.

There's a very real possibility that the ring was used to identify them as the target of a ritual rather than its perpetrators, and our evidence remains unfortunately thin. We've got to at least get more before we probably kick off massive riots in the middle of celebrations with out investigation.

It's not that I trust this guy, there's just too many reasons to not go kicking over the anthill yet.

At the moment I am feeling a bit thin on evidence to go in guns blazing.

Well, he is the High Priest our superior and If he said to be delicate ,we have to follow (for now). It gives us time to gather more evidence.
On more cynical and selfish side ,since he said to let it go it's on his head now.

let's not cause a mass panic and lynchings in the middle of a holiday over a daemon we already killed lol. Maugan Ra ain't Games Workshop, I don't think the moral of this story is "only the secret police can be trusted to do anything"
