Finding the Spark (Pathfinder 1E Quest)

I am wary that this veers into asking DP what 'the best option's is but... @DragonParadox does Sirim think 6 minutes is enough time to sneak to the camp, and talk to (I.e. make a check) Urgor and Leontas, or is the camp spaced out enough + far enough from a place for the party to hide that he thinks that he'd need more than 6 minutes?

Trying to do it in six minutes would impose mechanical penalties for the speed, specifically the -10 for moving at half speed while stealthing. For any party less adept at it than your own I would not suggest it. You could probably pull it off.

Basically I was concerned that the Hermean Potential wouldn't last until Sirim got a chance to make his check.

He has to leave the hidden party/break off from Mina, find the two he's looking for (probably starting with Urgor, since the merc leader never spoke to Sirim before), and then make the diplo/bluff check, and do that in 6 minutes.

I didn't think that was enough time.

(Thinking on it, Kori + Mina + Cob (for backup) could sneak to the edge of the treeline(?) and leave the Fey, the Dragon and Gorok and Warty behind, so the spells on Sirim have maximum duration.)

(Also maybe Pass Without Trace on those four might be useful if we do that)

Edit: If he can make the diplo/buff check in 6 minutes or less, then I agree with Mina staying behind.
I only included the Hermean Potential spell in case Sirim needed it to avoid being discovered somehow while making his way into the camp. If he needs rerolls once he gets into the camp, he can use Shadow Enchantment to cast his own Hermean Potential spell on himself, when the time is right and he doesn't need to worry about rushing before the duration expires.

Just to be clear, doesn't switching up Sirim's spells require a long rest?

(Also I think he already cast his Shadow Enchantment today)

I don't like the thought of having another long rest right now rather than having it after talking to Urgor and merc leader.

Then again, we can't depend on the two groups keeping our sudden yet inevitable betrayal secret for the duration of a full long-rest.

@DragonParadox, can you give us an idea of the timing here? By the time we are done talking with Sylestrix and planning an approach on the expedition, I'm assuming it will probably be the 7th and that we will have had to rest by that point. Is that correct?

No, you are in late afternoon on the 6th, the only way to get those spells and abilities back is to wait out the night early.
Yeah, that's what I thought. I would rather wait, get into a better position and rest, rather than rushing in immediately. We can't move this whole group quickly and quietly, not with Warty and four Large-sized Ohancanu brutes, so taking it slow and careful makes more sense to me.

[X] Goldfish

It feels a bit weird, to only have one encounter per rest, but that might be my memory of computergames more than tabletop speaking.

Update will be tomorrow, because I would rather update this quest in the morning and Green Flame Rising in the afternoon and not afternoon and late night respectively. Especially with more combat coming up I would rather not do the rolls this late. I'm bad enough at math in the daytime. :V

See you all in the morning.

  • [X] Sneak back into camp and try to ensure Urgor and Leontas are on your side
-[X] Sirim will sneak in alone, with the rest of the group hiding nearby. He has the skills and abilities to not only sneak in, but also to search for magical wards, Possessed individuals, hidden enemies, etc. He can also telepathically communicate with Leontas and Urgor without revealing himself or even getting close to them.
--[X] Kori will cast Protection from Evil and Invisibility on Sirim before he departs, and Mina will cast Hermean Potential and Heroism on him.
--[X] Sirim will prepare an additional Invisibility spell in place of Hypnotic Pattern, and Greater Detect Magic in place of Darkness. He'll alternate using Detect Fiendish Presence and Detect Magic while approaching the camp and moving through it.

Ethereal Encounters

Vermleks, of course it would be vermleks babbling about, horns aside, Sirim thought as he flowed and pooled through the dips and rises in the forest floor. The creatures had a reputation in Nidal as tempters of young shadowbinders into heresy. They claimed to know secrets of darkness that were old when Dou-Bral was young, and yet their only purpose was to ensconce themselves in warm flesh and make a mockery of the hopes, dreams, and ambitions of their would-be masters. When all was said and done vermleks were not creatures of treachery, though they practiced it, nor of stealth, though they had mastered it long ago, but of envy, the hollow feeling that another's life, place, or power should belong to you, stripped of all the social pretenses that men garbed them in. So it was with all demons, they were not souls corrupted, whatever their origin, but sins-given-mind and Sirim very much feared encountering one which echoed the temptations within.

It was not a thought he could share with his companions on the eve of battle, not when the prize they had so long sought after was in sight. Not when all I was asked was the use of my eyes and what passed for my voice. And yet he envied those still touched by true life, to feel the wind on his face, the feeling of sore muscles after a run, a refreshing drink of water, and the warm comfort of a filling meal on a cold winter's night. All these things he kept locked in memory's vault which were as far from him as the face of the moon, only now starting to peek between the branches the Verduran's gnarled and too-tall trees.

Enough moaning, thought the mage. The edge of the camp was ahead, reddish-gold light diffusing into a sort of half-twilight under the branches, even here at the forest's edge where the men of Fusil must have bargained with the fey to at least thin the canopy enough that no uninvited guest could simply jump from an oak branch atop their walls of piled stone.

The camp's own protections, alas, were far weaker than stone, only as strong as dwarven stubbornness and demon hunters' paranoia. One hopes that would be enough.

Sirim Stealth (Max Possible DC 20+6-5 = 21): 1d20+22 = Automatic Success

"So, d'you think the ghosts are going to get lost in the woods this time?" one portly dwarf asked a crossbowwoman, her weapon set beside the pot from which they were scraping out the last of the evening's meal, beans from the smell of it, and not half bad at that. Why this damnable form should have a sense of smell Sirim could not say, though he had to admit, intellectually at least, that it was probably not just to torture him.

"Your guess is as good as mine. Don't know where the wizard found them. I don't ask where wizards find anything, and you shouldn't neither. Sleep better at night that way," the woman replied and Sirim realized that he and his companions were the 'ghosts' of which they spoke.

Perhaps Gorok's Ghosts would suit them better once this battle was over, assuming they could make an end of this without making too many new enemies, the mage thought as he slid on past the duo in the direction of Urgor's tent. Unlike the sellswords, he was all-but-assured the dwarf would support them after the pledge Mina had made to him.

Still, he would have to be careful how he brought this up, dwarves could be strange and inflexible at the worst of times. Reaching out with his mind past the cloth walls of the tent....

At first he thought the feeling he was sensing was lust, which brought the additional and very much unwelcome question of how one politely disentangled a dwarvish assignation in preparation to plotting, but then he realized... for all its near orgasmic intensity the emotion was not desire, it was envy. Mind caging mind, soul caging soul, the vermlek had gotten here first.

Cursing inwardly in all the tongues he knew, and he knew many, the wizard considered his next move. Leontas may have some means of exorcism, some form of light bright enough to cast the thing out, but could he do so fast and in secrecy. Would he listen to the words Sirim had come here to deliver? The other option, little as he liked trusting the unknown, was still encamped on the village green: the gnomish prince. They had, after all, held to their side of the bargain, the Lord of Veils was dead. No love of demons would they have.

Lastly he could just leave back the way he had come, bring the others and see what solution they could think of. Not a thought he could have had half a year ago, much less been comfortable with, but now is was natural enough.

Or it is just me shirking my responsibilities.

What does Sirim do?

OOC: The -5 in that potential opposed stealth is distance since Sirim is under no obligation to go right under the noses of the guards, basically he is stealthy enough that even basic precautions mean that normal guards are not going to be able to catch him at it. Cob meanwhile is so stealthy he might soon be able to get away with stomping on the guards' feet as a prank, but that's Cob.

Damn, at least we shouldn't have a hard time convincing people to side with us.

Considering we just helped them out, I think the gnomes are the way to go.

Should this not be Mina?

Ok... so.

The demons got here first and have possessed someone. Urgor.
First of all: that's hilarious. Second, oh dear.

We have to deal with these demons so we can attack Gavhaul, who wants us to kill Sylestrix, who really wants to kill both Gavhaul and the demons, but we can't (read: really really shouldn't) attack Gavhaul until we get Urgor and Leontas on-side, at least one of whom is possessed by a demon.

So we can't bring Sylestrix in without her getting attacked, but she's not gonna want to sit this out, never mind not having her combat strength.

We don't have any way of blocking teleportation. Maybe CoRM does.
Oh! Maybe they have some way of hiding Sylestrix's true nature/disguising her as a different type of dragon and she can 'come with the CoRM group' to help deal with the demons, then we talk to Urgor and Leontas after (with Sylestrix still disguised), then we get to the treachery.

Poor Urgor, of course he would be the one who gets Possessed. Dude just doesn't have great luck, does he?

He is a good target for the Shadow Demons, though. He's the leader among the Dwarves, or at least the one with the greatest influence out of those accompanying the expedition, since he's a regular contact with Gavhaul.

Unfortunately, other than Gavhaul, the other prime Possession target among the expedition is probably Leontas himself. He's the commander of the mercenaries, after all, and they have long experience fighting against Demons. We know there is at least a pair of Shadow Demons involved here, so it's possible we'll find another Possessed victim in this camp.

On the other hand, the Demons might be able to sow more chaos and confusion if they take positions within both camps. If they want to set the expedition and the Fey against one another, for example, it would be much easier if they're setup among both camps acting as provocateurs. The Fey leader could be housing the other Demon, if we're really unlucky.

Eh, that's overly optimistic. Disguising Sylestrix as a different breed, if she could even be convinced to do something like that, would be relatively simple with magic. The problem is that another Dragon suddenly showing up is just really suspicious. No Dragons around for years, then suddenly there are two in the area?

I think Sirim should check on Leontas to confirm whether or not he's also been Possessed. Even if he doesn't speak with the man, we need to know just how compromised the camp has become. Sirim is already here, so ignoring that would be pretty wasteful and shortsighted, IMO.

[X] Seek out Leontas next. We need to know if he, too, has been taken by a Demon. If he has not, deliver a warning and ask for his help.

Not a coincidence, but active dragon politics. Kori to Gavhaul: this dragon is seeking the dragon that took the chest, and has promised said chest to us in return for our help finding and killing the dragon. We felt it best to agree to that deal. They're rather standoffish [Sylestrix glares in dragon]

Well, if anyone here has a protection against demons, would be him. We freed Urgor from one possessor, we can manage another..
I do hope he takes proper precautions before facing dwarven ghosts in his family's home though, a third possession would be embarrassing,

Looks like we are visiting the good captain.

Arc 8 Interlude 8: Spark of Silver Falling
Spark of Silver Falling

6th of Neth 4707 A.R. (Absalom Reckoning)

"Captain Leontas," his name came out of nowhere, seemingly conjured out of the evening air or imagination, until, that is, he spied a pair of faint red sparks, like the embers of a dying fire were all that marked the shadow in front of him. Cause and more than cause to have cold iron at hand.

"Easy boy, easy," he tightened his legs and lay his other hand on the side of horse's head.

"I am Sirim, companion to the lady Mina, come back before the others, and we have work to do this eve, you and I. Urgor Surefoot has been possessed by a shadow demon and we have cause to believe there is another afoot. I was quite relieved to see that it had not taken you..."

Another man, younger, more foolish or just unused to the ways of fiends, might have been struck in his pride by the implication that he could have been taken. But you didn't fight in the Crusades most of your life by thinking yourself beyond all spell or temptation, and no the sellsword was trying to figure out what that was. Not dead or he'd be feeling a chill in his bones, maybe more like one of the 'little gods' of the Sarkorians, half remembered from his mother's songs in childhood. He had to be sure it wasn't a demon. Hard-earned had been the lessons of the Crusades.

"Blood oath?" he asked grimly, carefully drawing the lance point up for twas cold iron and blessed beside, the bane of fey things and demons both.

"I have no blood, but I will make due," the spirit answered. One of its tendrils spiraled close, though this time mount was ready for it, just a nervous whinny out of him.

The metal bit into the shadow as it was meant to being touched by magic at all, but it didn't grow warm in his hands. This then, whatever it was, that warned him of demons was no demon itself.

His hand reached for the silver crusader's talisman he wore, the last remnant of the man who'd wanted to be a holy warrior, worn now for its practicality. The thought of giving it up when he knew there was another of the damn things around almost made his hands shake, but it was the sound tactical decision. They had to get the dwarf back, or they'd be fighting all his kinsmen sure enough. There was no way they would take Leontas' word over that which came from Urgor's lips

On hearing his plan the shade approved and offered some semblance of comfort at least, that being something it obviously wasn't used to dealing in: "A shadow demon would likely depart before dawn rather than risk being trapped in a vessel in daylight, when any proper exorcism would be their undoing."

Sirim Knowledge (the Planes): 1d20+13 = 30 (Success)

They planned for all manner of possibilities, from having his company storm the tent and hold the dwarf down to the shade holding him in place with magic long enough to set the talisman on him, but each option comes against the same issues: It is either loud enough to draw furious dwarfs or unreliable enough that the demon might do the calling himself, until, that is, they come upon the notion of simply dropping it on his head as Leontas approaches him in conversation.

"Master Surefoot, Master Surefoot!" Leontas called in his best impression of an asshole colonel who was about to launch into a half an hour complaint about about the latrines being three inches too deep or some such. "I would have words with you!"

The figure inside the tent moved as it should, solid dwarvish steps that always seemed like they'd shake the ground were they just a bit heavier. "Aye, and what words are those, lad?"

"I know that gambling's a reasonable enough pastime even in a war-zone, I'm a dab hand at the bones myself, but..."

Clink, the chain fell around his shoulders in a flash and a look of horror came upon him only for the shadow behind him to transform into a ragged winged thing, a nightmare without shape, and fly out with a hiss of undying spite.

Leontas Bluff: 1d20+14 = 26 vs Demon Sense Motive: 1d20+12 = 24
Sirim Stealth: 1d20: 22 = 37 vs Demon Perception: 1d20+20-2 = 28
Urgor Will Save (DC 19): 1d20+5 = 21 (Success)

Leontas finally let out a sigh of relief. "It's alright master Surefoot, you didn't do any harm and you fought it off. That's more than most who face such horrid trials can say..." He started, but the dwarf didn't looks like he was listening. They say the dwarf folk are made of stone. Leontas thought this one was looked like he was crumbling.

"Remember Jernashall," the shade snake hissed and almost as if by some spell he shook himself, some of the color returning to his face.

Sirim Diplomacy (DC 20): 1d20+12 = 30 (Success)

Once both of them had found a seat and the talisman had been returned with questions of where Surefoot might find one like it, it became clear the intrigues of the evening were not quite done.

How does Sirim try to convince Leontas that Gavhaul must be removed?

[] Appeal to his greed, once he he gone with can just split the treasure, it is not as though the locals or the faeries would care to gains us if we spread the story he was killed by the dragon. Wouldn't even be a lie, the dragon wants to kill him

[] Appeal to his sense of responsibility, these treasures of the Azlanti should not be left in the hands of such as Gavhaul, you saw how he treats others even when he needs them, the kind of company he kept, in Almas and elsewhere

[] Write in

OOC: You may note Sirim still has Circle of Protection versus Evil Prepared. The reason he did not mention that to Leontas is twofold, he would rather keep the spell secret and if the trick with the talisman did not work he would rather have it as an emergency do-over of sorts rather than just count on it alone. That paranoid flaw isn't just for show.

Hell yeah, Sirim crushed that mission.

I'm glad Leontas wasn't Possessed as well. That would have made things so much more complicated. Now that Urgor is free, we just need to get the captain on our side and eliminating Gavhaul may end up going more smoothly than I was expecting. That's good, because now the the Shadow Demon has been exorcised, the timetable has been moved up. The Demons are probably going to react in such a way to further muddy the waters.

As for convincing Leontas, I don't think we should try appealing only to his sense of responsibility or his greed. Rather, Sirim should try a mixture of both. Greed, because he's the leader of a large group of mercenaries, all of whom require payment for their time and risking their lives, and responsibility because while he may not longer be a Crusader, he still has a sense of right and wrong.

If we're going with greed, I'd like to point out that the a percentage of the value of soild adamantium eggs is reliable. Adamantium has a cost, the eggs have a volume, you know what your cut is worth.

The money one would get for ancient artefacts is nebulous, and thus a percentage of that is nebulous, and that makes it trivial to scam someone out of a fair bit of what they're owed.

"Oh, it's unfortunate I got such a low pay for all this stuff, but... you were on the room while we negotiated"
[Narrator: Gavhaul had secret negotiations with the buyer ahead of time, and they agreed to fake negotiate in front of Leontas and split whatever amount they scammed from him]

[X] Appeal to both Leontas' sense of greed and responsibility. Gavhaul is a man of fel intent and even poorer character. There are Demons afoot and a Dragon out for his blood, and that of any agent of the Consortium. If he were to die here, few if any would question his passing.
-[X] "Little in this world is free, Captain Leontas. One in your position likely knows this truth more fully than most. Aid us and we can split the proceeds far more favorably than whatever Gavhaul offered your company. Not only will you be able to pay your people what they are truly worth, you will have surplus coin so that you can be more discerning with future contracts. You may no longer be a member of the Crusades, but it must rankle a man such as yourself to work for the likes of Loric Gavhaul and the Apsis Consortium."
-[X] "If we work together, we can keep the treasures out of not only Gavhaul's grasp, but the Demons who also wish to claim them for some twisted purpose."
