A nation quest set in the world of Golarion from the Pathfinder campaign setting, readers will follow a tribal people from a "monster" heritage in their quest to become a nation, and what that means for them.

In the world of Golarion, there are many nations, especially in the Inner Sea region comprising the continental areas of northern Garund and Avistan. From the near-anarchic confederation of Nirmathas, to the sprawling imperial monarchy in the deserts of Kelesh, to the squabbling magocracies of Nex and Geb, and even the atheistic council of Rahadoum, many cultures, governments, ideals, traditions, and laws reign. To be a nation is to have a measure of security, a measure of power, a measure of influence, a measure of pride, perhaps.

But there are precious few nations of those kinds that are not of the so-called civilized races. Most are human, a few are elf and dwarf, one in Avistan is an orc nation. But there are none for your people, just scattered tribes and settlements. Let's change that, shall we? Let's play a tribe striving for nationhood in the Inner Sea region of Golarion.

Approval Vote:
Your tribe is composed of:

[ ] Gnolls, also known as kholo, an imposing hyena-like people favoring savannas and plains. They are born of hunger and the hunt, raider par excellence.
[ ] Kobolds, a lizard-like people often in caves and deep forests. They are diminutive and cowardly, but conversely arrogant and scheming, proud of their draconic heritage.
[ ] Boggards, also known as toadfolk, a frog-like people from the swamps of Golarion. They are reverent and communal, but a fearsome foe to those that intrude on their homes.

Hello everyone, this is Miriam, formerly Zioneer. I'm back with another quest idea, but this time I decided to try a different concept. I've always been curious on the cultures of what would be considered "monstrous" or "beast" races in TTRPGs, and I've always thought it was a bit unfair that these groups don't tend to have their own factions or nations. I've also been interested in the Pathfinder setting, even moreso than the rules. I haven't seen a lot of Pathfinder setting quests so I figured I'd make one.

I intend for the quest to be more narrative than rules-based, and the second round of choices will likewise be more for narrative flair and exploring the mindset of your people rather than giving bonuses or malus. Questions such as "how would a tribe who consider their word their bond approach alliances and subterfuge" or "How would a leader from a priestly class approach problems as opposed to a martial leader?". The second round of choices may alter your people somewhat from the traditional D&D/Pathfinder vision of these species, but I hope it will lead to lots of discussion and interest. The CK2/3 system will be used for rolls, but hopefully it will not dominate the narrative.

And to get everyone into the mindset, here are pictures of each species choice.

Interesting. Will cast my vote for...

[X] Boggards

Seen Kobolds a couple times and raider focused culture doesn't appeal much. So Frogger it is.

[X] Kobolds

I love these little guys, especially now that Monster Core made it so they can absorb ambient mana from any powerful source and be influenced by it. That seems like an interesting wrinkle to a 'set up a new home' game, and their niche as trap-building minions seems like it could make for a fun playstyle. And, of course, they're cute little lizard guys.

Genghis Gnoll shall rise and roam the grasslands once more!

One point of this quest is to illustrate that the monster races need not remain in their original stereotyped role. They can, if that is the thread and narrative's wishes, but you could easily have a nation of gnolls who eventually lean into blacksmithing or shamanism as much or more than raiding. The second round of votes will help with determining what traditions and culture are made for the winner of this initial choice. You are correct that gnolls have a strong incentive to stay raiders, however. As do kobolds for scavenging, and boggards to stick to their swamps. At least initially.

Yep, the development is the interesting part, looking forward to how you handle that. Despite the somewhat dismissive comment I am a bit partial to some swampy communalist amphibian aesthetics though. Am happy with choosing team frog.

Apologies if it came across as dismissive, it 100% was not intended to be dismissive at all. Was just noting the intent of the quest.

And definitely, if you like frogs on their own merits that's great as well! I have plans for any of the three starting options.

Haha, it's fine was referring to my own initial comment on my choice, not your reply. Looking forward to whichever one wins.

Actually, yeah, I like frogs. I mean, I also like Hyenas, but, hmm.

I've seen more with Gnolls! In Pathfinder 2e, as I'm sure you know, @Miriam , they're even a valid Ancestry... given a very interesting and honestly fascinating portrayal as far as it goes. But they do have some support as potential PCs, as it were.

Whereas I've never even SEEN anyone try to make an Ancestry/playable Race out of Boggards!
