Finding the Spark (Pathfinder 1E Quest)

OK, looks like Kori is going to give this a shot.

I'd say may the gods be with you but the Gods of Azlant are dead and the things the Caligini worship are... not.

  • [X] Agree to help him escape his wedding (Gain 2500 gp and a Spindle Solution Pendant)
-[X] Truthfully, foretell dark omens to the King should the wedding take place
    [X] Refuse, this is madness
[X] Cob; Goblin, Rogue, Gentleman, Man of the People...Diplomat?
-[X] While Kori distracts Prince Cozut, Mina surreptitiously casts Heroism, Hermean Potential, and Guidance on Cob as Gorok just happens to block them from the prince's view.
--[X] Once hopped up on Witch magic, Cob tries to persuade the prince that he can do both, become king and then turn his attention to the Chelish
-[X] If that doesn't work, we'll have to refuse. We don't have the power or clout to pull off this sort of thing.

Arc 6 Post 18: Of the Living
Of the Living

8th of Lamashan 4707 A.R. (Absalom Reckoning)

A better reason than you gave the boy credit for, and a better prize than you had any reason to hope for. Why not try to get something out of a lifetime of poisoned looks?

Reaching out a hand in the burnlander manner, then turning it into as much of a bow as the tangles of this new cloak will allow, the words come smoothly to the tongue. "If you're to be the king than on your head be it, for better or for worse."

"No need to start already," the prince offers a wan smile.

"That's not prophecy, true or false, it is stating the obvious. If you wed the Usena girl and hate her for it, that bitterness will be the seed of your reign."

Cozut's expression darkens, though before he can answer Cob hands him both of the knives you had prepared for wedding gifts. "If things go good you won't marry. If things go bad you'll need knives."

Gained 2,500 Gold -> Now at 3,014 gp 5 sp 21 cp

Best knife exchange you ever made. Now, what kind of curse would be so dreadful as to break off the wedding, but not so dire that it would not come to blood? A lack of offspring maybe? Or too many of them and too willful that they will rip the two peoples' apart in war? So distracted are you with plots and questions that your hand brushes against the pendant without meaning to. It's like the hall of stone, a thing of the old world. The Dead... No sooner had the thought crossed your mind that a thousand voices speak as one. They do not whisper, do not rasp, so close they seem that you might be able to reach out tour hand and brush against theirs, a thousand voices more than ten thousand years gone:

Do not stand
By our grave, and weep.
We are not there,
In waters deep
We do not sleep—

In your mind's eye you see men and women with olive-gold skin and dark eyes, like the ones you had glimpsed in the message, but somehow prouder and more sorrowful. Filled at once with bitterness and with resolve as they sing under skies grey as vaults of slate as pyres burn among the crashing sea.

We are a thousand winds that blow
We are the currents swirling low
We are the sunlight on ripened grain,
We are the gentle, autumn rain.
As you awake with morning's hush,
We are the swift, up-flinging rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight,
Beyond dark clouds, transcending night.

They weep and weep until they have tears do more, until dry-eyed they look to the east where the sun is naught but a lightening of the haze over withering lands and yet they live, and yet they sing:

Do not stand by our grave, and cry—
We are not there, we did not die.

Choose One (1) Occult Mystery Revelation which will be linked to the pendant:

[] Automatic Writing (Su): Once per day, you can spend a full hour in uninterrupted meditation. During this period, your hands produce mysterious writing that pertains to the future. At 1st level, the prophetic writing manifests as an augury spell with 90% effectiveness. At 5th level, the writing takes the form of a divination spell with 90% effectiveness. At 8th level, the writing manifests as a casting of commune with no material component required.

[] Brain Drain (Su): You can take a standard action to violently probe the mind of a single intelligent enemy within 100 feet. The target receives a Will save to negate the effect and immediately knows the source of this harmful mental prying. Those who fail this save are wracked with pain, and take 1d4 points of damage per oracle level you possess. After successfully attacking with this ability, you can use a full-round action to sort through the jumble of stolen thoughts and memories and then attempt a single Knowledge check using the victim's skill bonus. The randomly stolen thoughts remain in your mind for a number of rounds equal to your Charisma modifier. Treat the knowledge gained as if you had used detect thoughts. This is a mind-affecting effect. You can use this ability once per day at 1st level, plus 1 use per day at 5th level, and 1 use for every 5 levels beyond 5th.

[] Ectoplasmic Armor (Su): You can conjure armor made of ectoplasm that grants you a +4 armor bonus to AC. In addition, this armor functions as if it had the ghost touch special ability. At 7th level and every 4 levels thereafter, the armor bonus increases by 2. You can use this armor for 1 hour per day per oracle level. This duration does not need to be consecutive, but it must be spent in 1-hour increments.

[] Phantom Touch (Su): As a standard action, you can perform a melee touch attack that causes a living creature to become shaken. This ability lasts for a number of rounds equal to 1/2 your oracle level (minimum 1 round). You can use this ability a number of times per day equal to 3 + your Charisma modifier. At 5th level, the target instead becomes frightened, and at 7th level, the target becomes panicked.

[] Spectral Spells (Su): You gain Ectoplasmic Spell as a bonus feat. In addition, once per day, you can cast a spell with the Ectoplasmic Spell metamagic feat as a standard action that does not increase the level of the spell. You can use this ability one additional time per day at 7th level and every 4 levels thereafter.

[] Voice of the Grave (Su): You can use speak with dead, as the spell, for a number of rounds per day equal to your oracle level. These rounds do not need to be consecutive. At 5th level and every 5 levels thereafter, the dead creature takes a cumulative –2 penalty on its Will save to resist this effect.

OOC: The original Poem which I did my poor best to adapt to the needs of this story is Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep, by Clare Harner.

These are the ones I want. Leaning towards the 1st one. I want more cryptic shenanigans in our life.

Huh, those are revelations from other mysteries. I thought we would get an extra one from one of our own.

Anyway, I am leaning towards the free divination. That will help on the upcoming bluff

[x] Automatic Writing (Su)

The other options are not bad, but we have ways to do similar things with our current resources.

Holy crap, I was just thinking we could get another Shadow revelation. That would have been nice, but Automatic Writing is awesome for us. Very fitting for an oracle, too.

We'll be able to use it for Divination once per day for free, and that will turn into free Commune at 8th level.

You might want to think what kind of ominous prophecy you want to make up to get these people to cancel the wedding. This was payment for something Kori has not done yet

Definitely Automatic Writing.

Speak with Dead is useful in a lot of situations, but Mina learns that as bonus spell next level. The earliest Kori or Mina could learn Divination is 7th level and it costs 25 gold in reagents per use.

Automatic Writing takes longer to use than casting the spell, but we can use it now and it won't cost us anything.

Commune is a 5th level spell, meaning we would normally need to be 10th level to learn it and each casting would cost 500 gold.

Oh and to be clear if for some reason you want to you can use Automatic Writing at the lower levels, so Augury instead of Divination or Divination in place of Commune. That just makes sense with how game systems work in Pathfinder, you should not lose access to any capabilities as you go up in level, not unless you also do something to make yourselves unsuitable in some way for a class.

Now would be a great time to use the pendant to perform a Divination for Cozut.

If the result seems really good, he might want to go through with the wedding after all. And if it's bad, we'll have a genuine prophecy to share so we don't have to make up one.

Do we have an hour we can use for the ability?

You do, but keep in mind Divination can only look about a week ahead.

Is there a benefit to it?

What differentiates one spell from another? I thought them to be upgrades as far as clarity of information one receives goes.

Furthermore, if we Commune, what would we be communing with? Collective Azlanti memory (as this is what seems to be packed into a pendant), or one of those beings that visited us in the dream and delivered a prophecy? I admit to wanting to see more of the latter.

If we do, we don't want to give a truthful prophecy. We want to know the angle to pursue so our heads preferably won't end up on pikes. There are plenty of complications Kori could allude to to disrupt the wedding, and not all of them would be safe to mention.

Well just as an example Augury can only give: Weal/Woe/Both/Neither answer so if you want that format instead of a more detailed, but also potentially more obscure result it might be worth it. Well as long as you were only interested in looking 30 minutes ahead. It would not be a common occurrence I imagine but it could happen.

It does not seem to be so much memory as voices, souls, which seems quite odd to you since according to Mina most souls of those who died ten thousand years ago should have been well past their judgement

Anyone have any ideas for this? I'm not too good at coming up with believable BS.

I think we should probably avoid using Cheliax or Devils, since the prince is already well known for speaking out against them and espousing the dangers they represent.

The Sleepers Awaken?

From Beneath You It Devours?

How ominous could we be without going overboard? I'm worried this is going to crash and burn no matter how good our BS is. It's not a secret the prince invited us, so us suddenly prophesizing disaster if he gets married is going to be super suspicious.

The Sleepers Awaken?
Well, we do have one sleeper we awakened ourselves.
You do not need the shadow-tinted whisper of: "Azlant" in your mind to know what he means, but from there the story only gets stranger. The ceratioidi of his tribe do not, by Galvo-slayer's account, use the city as mere shelter, but as protection from some dreadful and singular threat which they will not name, but refer to only as 'mind-hunters' as one might speak of some horror out of Orv. The Echowell of the city is the heart of this protection, so named because at times it speaks. Such matters impinge upon the mysteries passed down from spawnings out of memory and so he will not speak much of them, but something had made the Echowell alight with runes of power and awakened strange stony creatures that befuddled all who looked upon them and shattered the weapons of the defenders. Some other creature of the stony depths? you wonder and from the silence of your passenger you guess he is just as befuddled.

Starring unblinkingly at you Galvo-slayer explains in his odd gurgling tongue that his master had communed with the Echowell using the old rites, giving blood and flesh, and thus he had learned that one of the World-Breakers, the makers of the city, had called to it, summoned it to war on behalf of the World-Breakers who were. Fearing that this would end their sanctuary, the tribe beseeched their god to find this World-Breaker and bring him to the well as sacrifice, that it may be put to slumber again.
Might tie it to the wedding somehow, something about this alliance leading into becoming a part of this war, and voila. It's verifiable, even -- through Captain Caulker, if no one else.

...the drawback being, this accident can be traced back to us if they choose to investigate.

Okay, just some brainstorming. Apologies for any cringing it may cause.

"Beware!

"The Sleepers sleep no longer!

"Those once lost to eternal slumber in the cold embrace of the Void have descended to once more walk among the living...

"From the depths of the earth below, the World Wrecker rises, it's dream prison shattered by the ancestors' return...

"To strengthen the Blood of Old is to draw it's gaze and invite a new calamity!
"

Why not simply use the Divination to ask about how the lie goes through and make the necesaary corrections?

I'm not sure if we can use Divination like that. I think the best we can manage is to come up with a lie first and ask how it goes. If good, we can go through with it, and if not, we have to come up with something else.

We'll only have one chance within the allotted time to check, since the wedding is so close.
