Then it leans forward, gripping the sides of the frame, and as you recoil in surprise it steps out of the mirror.

It is -- they are -- distinct from the real you in many ways. The clothes are different. The expression is different. The little mannerisms are different -- some of them, at least. This is a character from a different story, a version of you with a different history.

You realize, after a moment, what part of that difference is from the face you see in the bathroom mirror every day. They look happier.

"You could have been me," says your reflection. "I could have been real. I could have scaled the Ascent and chased my most glorious dreams. Instead I am less than nothing. A trick of the light, an image in glass."

You cut them off, because you see where this is going. "Let me guess. You're the ambitions I cast off? The version of me that stuck around in consulting and kept kicking ass and taking names, and now seeks new worlds to conquer?"

They throw back their head and laugh. "You'd like that, wouldn't you? To be confronted by an incarnation of the parts of yourself you already decided to forsake? Then you could ignore me with a clear conscience and move on, feeling righteous. No, Ash. I'm the version of you that quit sooner."

Your heart freezes in your chest.

They keep talking, each word a hammerblow. "I'm the version of you that saw what this was costing and prioritized appropriately. I'm the version that stood up with Zach when he and Nikki got married after graduation, and stood up with Christine when she got married, and has a weekly game night with Justin and some local friends we made, because I'm the one who actually cared. I'm a godparent, too, because they don't just want me in their lives, they want me in their kids' lives. Like, yeah, I probably don't have as much money or free time as you do, I have a much lower-powered career path now, but I think we both know who is richer."

"Listen, mirror-Ash," you begin feebly.

They shake their head. "Not Ash. I figured that out sooner, too, with the support of our friends. And seriously, Ash? Did just naming yourself 'Burnout' feel too on-the-nose? I'm Rowan."

"And you are... this." Rowan looks you up and down, and the contempt is like a knife-wound. "This is what you have made yourself. This is what you have done with the gift of existence."

"I think we should exchange places. I think I'd make much more of reality."

They step forward, maybe to attack you, maybe to embrace you, and you're not sure that there's a real difference...

How so? I'm not sure what you mean. Rowan is saying that their life should be the real one and Ash be the one in an unreal mirror-world, because Rowan sees Ash as a hopeless fuck-up. Is something not making sense or otherwise confusing about how I wrote it?

So, to use Swords to battle this phantasm, we would need to expend all relevant cards in our Pneuma, including the Ace. I'm not sure I want that, especially since we have 2 Supernal Experience, and so could spend 2 of the 4 Pentacles cards in the Pneuma, or spend 1 and 3.
Or, of course, use a Trump. Of which we have the blank-slate potential of The Fool, and the understanding comfort of the Empress.

Swords is asserting that Ash is worthy in their own self to exist - Rowan might have a better life in terms of happiness and connections, but likely would not be Dreaming, nor Ascending: asserting "I am worthy". Pentacles is dismissing Rowan as insufficiently real to possibly take over Ash's life, and putting enough power behind that to make it stick: asserting I AM.

So, from a narrative perspective, Swords makes Ash more comfortable with who they are, but Pentacles might give more of an insight/affinity for the altered realities of the Dream.

TBH, I think I prefer Swords, but I like drawing on the comfort that the Empress provided, to assert that Ash has started to find their own way of healing. The innocent potential of the Fool is also quite potent, but doesn't feel quite as appropriate in the moment.

See the last paragraph of the update: It's gone from the Pneuma, but not from Ash's experience. Rather, it's pulling on the power of that experience and transforming it into the Triumphant Initiation, or so it seems.

From a purely mechanical perspective, it probably is better to go Pentacles. But, I think I prefer the narrative that goes along with the Swords approach.
 
The swords approach is asserting that being stronger makes one more worthy of existence, while the Pentacles approach cares about what is real.
I explained my interpretation in the post with my vote... it differs from yours.
Mechanically speaking saving Pentacles for later also seems better, since these conflicts get harder each one we win?
If we go the Pentacles route, we can avoid using Trumps or an Ace. Trumps are the most versatile, and using an Ace locks out certain other options.

Okay, still haven't got an answer for "why does it mechanically matter which exact cards are in our Pneuma, rather than just their suits" (though it could plausibly be purely about the narrative implications of drawing on a given card for a given purpose, at this point), but at least we've certainly got that large-scale outlet for our accumulated Pneuma cards I was wondering about.

As to implications for the broader structure of the game...the fact that Triumphant Initiations get more expensive the more of them we have, and that they do special things when we have a certain number, suggests that accumulating them is probably deeply tied to (if not constituting entirely in itself) the Supernal Finale wincon. We've also got a hard example of a Tormented Finale, which would currently seem pretty difficult to get forced into (we'd have to be on our final Ace as well as largely out of other gas in the tank) though not all may be so forgiving. For that matter, some may seem preferable to risking a Wearied Finale, if we're sufficiently tapped on Willpower at the time! Suppose we'll see.

In terms of practical takeaways, then. For Power, one card in Pneuma is equal to one Supernal, and since Power seems likely to be the crux on which Triumphant Initiations (and thereby, presumptively, our preferred wincon) will hinge, we should be very wary of spending at worse than that rate (e.g. losing two cards to pass up the 8). At the same time, since we've seen precious few other ways to use our Pneuma, spending cards from it here is probably preferable to spending more fungible (and, per the 8, otherwise higher-valued) Supernals (with the caveat that spending Aces is probably best avoided, and spending Trumps means losing flexibility in a different sense).

Also, by symmetry, I suspect the other 8s will likewise fling us into trials if we accept them, which means we should ideally make sure we're decently stocked on all suits before going in. Our Cups runneth over, but for any other suit, achieving a victory will basically clean us out. I am therefore strongly averse to spending our Trumps until we absolutely have to, because their flexibility makes it much easier to meet the minimum threshold for multiple suits at the same time. And we won't want to risk going in with more than one suit below said threshold until at minimum we have a better handle on the patterns of the trials (one suit lacking is provisionally acceptable because I'm willing to gamble that future trials will follow this one in having multiple options for how to achieve victory).

As such, I think the choice is obvious here:

Setting aside whether swapping places works retroactively in time, this is a terrible attitude to have IMO so..

I mean, okay, look, if you accept the framing that Rowan is Ash, then the idea isn't "you, other person, should give up your life in the world for my personal benefit," it's "my life is the one we should be living, not yours." It's "we should have made the choices I represent, not the choices you actually made, and now we can fix that." It's ultimately not so much a confrontation as a temptation.

And look at the options for resolving it. It's about either establishing the worth of the life Ash has led, or simply rejecting Rowan's power over them outright. And even failing that, while the experience will change them, they'll get away. There are only two worlds in which Ash actually ends up on the other side of that mirror: the one where they (we) accept it voluntarily, by choosing the Tormented Finale...or the world in which they're so worn down (only one Ace left in the deck, so inches from a Wearied Finale already) that they can't even think of any other way to be. Which really comes out to much the same thing.

So, accepting that this isn't so much an entity threatening us as an idea tempting us ("what if I really could go back, make all the choices I already think I should have, live a different life"), what does that make our answers to it?

Swords says, "no, I don't regret the life I led, it's made me who I am and that gives me strength."
Pentacles says, "no, it doesn't matter if I would want to, I can't go back, I have to live the life I have."

Both respectable enough sentiments, in general, but...to me, for Ash, the former feels more like sour grapes. I don't think the life they've led did make them stronger. I think it just hurt them, and burned them up, and hollowed out everything else about their life, and that's just bad. Things can just be bad. Insofar as there's a silver lining at all, it's the cold hard cash, which is nice for quality of life but doesn't really get you much in terms of inner strength. But the thing is, however much it really would have been better for them to lead Rowan's life...they didn't. And I think Pentacles is about accepting that, and moving on.

Actually, it took me a while longer than that to edit the rest of the post in lol.

I personally think it's more "you need to select the Card Suits you want to monofocus on if you want any chance of success due to limited WP and increasing difficulties over time"?

And call me crazy, but I'm also generally suspicious of mirrors that show you false reflections of yourself that you have a hard time looking away from. Gives me the creeps. The trumps are the powerful and dangerous greater powers of the dreams, and I worry that the one we'll meet here might not be one we want to meet.
Yep. Though as I also said, I expected this to be interesting, and this definitely is, so I'm not really complaining.

Narrativetly, Pentacles is the only way to go as far I am concerned. Swords says that "your own history has made you stronger than this might-have-been", and I don't think it did. Pentacles is saying that, regardless of what mistakes Ash make, they are real and their life matters. That's the correct sentiment, if you ask me: Ash made mistakes, and now they need to live with them. We should save trumps, and probably not expand an Ace, so the current leading vote is good I think.

Classic "monster in the mirror wants to take your place" mixed with the "road not taken".

Not sure I buy Rowan's claims that their life is "better". Happier, certainly, but better? Who has the right to determine that, who has the right to judge, to balance two lives on the scales like that?

There is a hole in Rowan's life, just as there is a hole in Ash's life—Ash tried to fill theirs with work, and later magic, and Rowan tried to fill it with friends and family. Neither is wrong, merely different. Regrets are the cobblestones the road of life is made of.

Consider why Rowan wants Ash's life—is it because Ash has made all the "wrong" choices, or because Ash has something Rowan coverts? There is a drive, a power, an impact to Ash's life that Rowan simply doesn't have. Rowan exists within the world, Ash exists at it.

Could Rowan have fought Idra, inspired Jagoda, journeyed with Frank, sought comfort with the Empress? Is Rowan deserving of those victories? What have they done to earn Ash's life?

They say that justice is many things—that it is fair, that it is blind, that it is just. But the most important thing is that it makes the injured party whole. And Ash is so very wounded—and yet, all Rowan can focus on is making themselves whole. Rowan's "justice" is as false as an image in a mirror.

True, but it could also easily be the simpler option of not wanting to exist / be trapped in a mirror (I figure there's a reason it's called a Tormented Ending after all)?

Though I do think you can say that hypothetical Rovan did indeed benefit the people around him more based on what we've seen so far and thus be better by that metric; lack of Ambition isn't exactly a bad thing in and of itself?
