All Aurora wishes for in life, is the comfort of her thrice refined phoenix pillow.

Unfortunately for her, despite being the fifth born of the Protus family, much is expected from her.

Joining the Iron Oath school, Aurora has taken the first steps as an Oath bearer and must navigate family and school politics, annoying rivels and dangers at every turn.

All so she could someday return to her peace filled life and spend her days in the comfort of her bed.

Thankfully she is not alone and to help her on her journey she is joined by her retainers.

Gallus, the rough brute with the soul of a big nerd.

And Octavia, a former peasant girl in possession of the Truth-Seeking Eyes legacy.

Will they manage to find a way for Aurora to spend her time doing nothing? No, probably not.

Would it be funny tough? Maybe, If I ever manage to get this comedic writing style down (so no promises).

The First Oath.
Should I be starting another quest? Probably not but I'm sleep deprived and cranky so I'm doing it anyways, this quest is mostly going to play second fiddle to my main one but the idea wouldn't leave my head.

Anyhow I hope you enjoy and do please vote in plan format (it would be such a pain otherwise).

It was a bright and sunny day that shined upon the selection trails.

You have been awake since dawn, not wishing to have even the slightest chance to miss it and even still you barley made it in time.

You only reached the compound by noon, a handful of minutes before it started.

Cursing the fact you could I'll afford a carriage ride like most of the other candidates here, you hurried to join the gathered crowd -it numbered at least a thousand- being in the back was annoying but you're just happy you didn't miss the whole thing, would be pretty embarrassing to fail because you hadn't shown up on time.

Why is it that you couldn't hire a carriage again?

[] You were poor.

There was no other way to cut it, your family was broke. How could you have coin for a carriage when some days you didn't have enough coin to eat?

+start with a high will attribute.

+start with a high mind attribute.

+start with many low-level skills.

-your family can't support you.

-start with a low body attribute

[] You were a criminal.

A former member of some minor gang in the city, you left the gang after crossing the son of the leader. Your likeness is known to the authorities and so you couldn't hire an official carriage.

+start with high combat skills.

+start with a high body and mind attribute.

+start with some cash and a T1 treasure stolen from your former gang.

-start with a low heart score.

-your past will come back to haunt you.

[] You were forbidden.

It will build character he said, it will be good for you he said, and now you're stuck huffing and puffing all the way to the school, you would much rather just laze about in your family fancy carriage. Like what's so wrong about enjoying your life? You're the fifth born for gods sake, your brothers and sisters can bring honor to the family while you much on all the sweets.

+Start with a high heart score.

+start with high social skills and above average combat skills.

+your family will support you with many resources and treasures.

+start with two retainers which would obey your order's.

-your family expects much
.

-other families will try to knock you down.

-start with a lower will attribute.

-less weekly AP as you laze about.

Regardless, you have made it in time.

Unfraternally, you had little time to socialize with your fellow hopefuls before an old man dressed in gray robes stepped onto a podium and drew the crowed attention with a mighty clap.

"Welcome aspirants to the Iron Oath school, I am Octavian, master of this school and it gladdens my heart to see our ranks swell despite recent events" you scowl at the mention of the war -while you aren't overly proud of your nation getting trampled still doesn't sit right with you- "Yet while truly glad that so many youths are ready to pick up the sword for their fellow man, only two hundred will remain here by day end."

With a clap of his hand a few dozen man and women who wear the same gray robes as him appear, and whose skin resembles the school namesake "The Iron Oath school is an old and storied school an we accept only the best, under the watch of our inner disciples you will undergo tests to ensure you meet our standards but worry not if you fail for you may always try next year"

Yeah right, even you know that the Iron Oath rarely -if ever- accept a student over eighteen, if you don't pass here, you won't have another chance.

But you're ready, in fact you're more than ready the requirements for entering the school arnt secret after all and you already know you passed them.

The ones you could measure at least.

And when its time for your own test you prove it.

Physical tests, knowledge tests an actual written exam, a few machines and treasures that you are told measure the strength of your soul and many, many more.

And like you thought you passed them all.

In fact, you did more then pass one of them you've excelled.

[] After your physical they took small blood sample from you to test and what the result cam back they marked you as possessing a refined existence… whatever that is. (Start with all of your attributes in the second tier and make them easier to raise).

[] one of their strange machine's bopped and apparently that means you possess a powerful legacy, who knew? (Start with a powerful legacy -that will be chosen by you-, legacies are unique powers that either greatly empower the one who posse them or change some rule of realty to their benefit).

[] one large disciple handed you a rock when that rock glowed yellow he exclaimed that your soul must be very strong… not that you feel that way (gain another soul contract slot which doesn't count towards the difficulty unlocking new ones).

By the time testing is done the sun is long set and less then a fifth of the initial crowed remains.

And you're swiftly herded into an auditorium set in the entrance of the school compound with well over a hundred people in it, the auditorium is crowded but your -and everyone else's- attention is drawn by master Octavian and the iron staff he's holding.

You've never seen one before but deep down you know that the iron staff which is covered by thousands of runes, is a Screlium a priceless artifact meant to bind the first soul oath.

While you were distracted by the Screlium Octavian began to speak "long ago, the first man was noting but a livestock for the great tyrants, an animal waiting to be slaughtered to feed their masters" you knew the story he was telling, you doubted that there was anyone that didn't know the story of humanity revolt "nothing more then cows that what we once were until Monica the great mother has given her life so her child may live and that in her blood and soul the child has sworn revenge and so was the first oath bearer was born and the age of tyrant came to an end and the age of man begun"

"Many ages have passed since then and many oath bearers have risen and fallen and now you take your first step in joining their storied halls, this " he points to the staff in his hand " Is a Screlium forged from the body of our founder the great Augustus and imbued with a portion of his soul over three millennia ago and now like the first oath so long ago you will swear your oath in it".

With that he moved towards the closest aspirant and extended that staff to him "The first oath has been optimized over the centuries, the stuff will guide you in its making" and so one by one has Octavian passed the staff to make their oath and soon it was your turn.

Grasping the staff with both hands you instinctively know what you must do.

But curiously there seems to be a choice.

The oath the staff will make you swear is one of exercise, far from the oaths of loyalty or vengeance all the stories wax about your first oath will be to exercise.

And its up to you to specify how much and in what time frame.

How intense do you want your exercises to be?

[] Light (+1 oath rank, -2 AP).

[] Medium (+2 oath rank, -4 AP).

[] Heavy (+3 oath rank, -6 AP).

And how frequently do you want to do it?

[] Every month (+1 oath rank, AP cost must be paid over 4 turns).

[] Every two weeks (+2 oath rank, AP cost paid over 2 turns).

[] every week (+3 oath rank, AP cost must be paid every turn).

Evry oath carries a price and the greater it is the more you gain form the oath but what do you wish to gain?

[] strength.
[] power.
[] wisdom.
[] knowledge.
[] time.
[] life.
[] friends.
[] wealth.
[] write in.

And just because I couldn't find a place to put it, I also need

[] a name.

[] and a gender.

how many APs would we normally have? are turns weekly? this kind of matters to decide just how much we're willing to swear us to do.

as a nice sinergy, heavier exercise oath is likely to work well with the "easier to raise" attributes.

also what does the oath rank even do? and is the oath "forever"?

what counts as exercise? Is it only for physical stats, or also mental, social, heart, will, skill?

if it's mostly about the body, then something like Poor (low body) + refined existence (attributes easier to raise) + high AP commitment could work well.

all in all, we kinda need a bit more information on the mechanics to decide what to pick I think

This sounds like the noble is about to make a choice he'll HEAVILY regret by committing himself to super-hard exercise. Which hey, it can be pretty fun.

Base of 9, the noble has 7. And turns are weekly.

also what does the oath rank even do? and is the oath "forever"?
Oath rank is the power of the oath, the higher it is the stronger the benefit you gain form the oath and oaths are permanent.

what counts as exercise? Is it only for physical stats, or also mental, social, heart, will, skill?
Only body and mind.

This sounds like the noble is about to make a choice he'll HEAVILY regret by committing himself to super-hard exercise. Which hey, it can be pretty fun.
He will, and if that gets chosen it going to be fluffed as him being pressured by his family to take it/ realizing that if he takes the maximum, he can use all his other time to laze about while blaming the contract if anyone complains, not realizing how horribly that is going to backfire on him.

edit: ok,cutting back on this

edit2: i really hope time gives more ap

edit3: ok did some math,min-maxing this more...the frequency doubles the price per rank. The intensity is directly 1 rank per 2ap. so this is the best rank-for-price. the problem is limited contract slots. but thats something we can probably acquire with training and maybe the legacy
edit 4: name and gender? ok forgot that

mh... spending time to gain time (oath power) might work out well.

going heavy on power (high physical talent, high exercise commitment, power as the oath reward) is another avenue to go pure brutal overwhelming might...

we're still missing informations I think.

mh... I can guess what body, mind, will and skills would be like a bit. What about Heart?

as for the optimal point in terms of oath cost...

AP cost per month, assuming we're simplifying as 1 month = 4 weeks

[] Light (+1 oath rank, -2 AP).[] Medium (+2 oath rank, -4 AP).[] Heavy (+3 oath rank, -6 AP).
[] Every month (+1 oath rank, AP cost must be paid over 4 turns).2 AP, +2 rank4 AP, +3 rank6 AP, +4 rank
[] Every two weeks (+2 oath rank, AP cost paid over 2 turns).4 AP, +3 rank8 AP, + 4 rank12 AP, +5 rank
[] every week (+3 oath rank, AP cost must be paid every turn).8 AP, +4 rank16 AP, +5 rank24 AP, +6 rank

Going Heavy is more efficient in general, with for example "Heavy every two weeks" giving +5 rank for 12 APs per month, compared to the 16 APs total cost from "Medium every week".

I think the best combo here in terms of quality/price ratio would likely be "Heavy + every two weeks", giving us +5 ranks at half the cost of the +6 rank combo, and saving us 4 APs over the Medium + every week option.

If we think that one extra point of oath rank is worth it, it MIGHT be worth going for the max cost combo... but that depends a LOT on just how much difference there is from that. Uri, any word on it?

A few examples of oath powers at different ranks, maybe?

[X] Plan: Limited number of oaths? We ball.

-[X] Every two weeks (+2 oath rank, AP cost paid over 2 turns).
-[X] time
edit: ok,cutting back on this

edit2: i really hope time gives more ap

Heavy + every 2 weeks is probably the optimal choice, I agree.

Poor would probably synergize better with "refined existence", which makes attributes easier to raise. Then again, we really have no examples of Legacies.

sorry, changed it a little, your math is really useful, but ap is ourONLY ressource with the poor built,so i want to spend less.

It's the social atribute.

If we think that one extra point of oath rank is worth it, it MIGHT be worth going for the max cost combo... but that depends a LOT on just how much difference there is from that. Uri, any word on it?
One point to here or there won't make that big of a difference.

I will tell you that many of the benefits you gain are either tied to oath rank in their power, duration or both and maybe a few other things.

Without going to a specific example, it would things like, you may do Y X times per Z day/week/month, or get +X for something where X is the oath rank.

I'm a bit worried about the pacing of the quest. Every turn being one week means it will take 52 turns to finish a year. In xianxia thousands of years have to pass before you become a powerful entity.

Well, things are going to be a little faster than traditional xianxia and when enough of the world is built and you've become settled its not beyond the imaginations, we'll change to longer turn lengths.

But a week is actually pretty standard for such cultivation quests and the journey is probably more important than the destination here.

sorry, changed it a little, your math is really useful, but ap is ourONLY ressource with the poor built,so i want to spend less.
base ap per week: 9, from Uri's post.

so in a month we get, assuming 4 weeks to a month, 36 AP.

I think that raising the sacrificial cost from 8 to 12 APs (per month) for an extra rank is worth it, especially considering that the poor origin is explicitly of weak body, and that's likely something we'd want to fix.

I very much understand not wanting to spend a full 24 AP, 2/3 of all of our AP, for that 1 extra rank point, but I think 12 is worth it.

Now, I personally also prefer taking the refined existence pick, as that explicitly make the training (which we're FORCED to take) more effective, at least in regards to attributes (though from Uri "forced exercise" only counts for Body and Mind apparently...)

One point to here or there won't make that big of a difference.

I will tell you that many of the benefits you gain are either tied to oath rank in their power, duration or both and maybe a few other things.

Without going to a specific example, it would things like, you may do Y X times per Z day/week/month, or get +X for something where X is the oath rank.
yeah, this makes me think that +6 oath rank is just not worth it here. it's either +5 or maaaaaybe +4.

and as we're forced to exercise (which is body/mind), Poor origin (high mind low body) or maybe noble (not mentioned, so presumably average body/mind) would be best.

the wealthy origin comes with fewer APs (28 per month instead of 36), but then again he also has more resources, and that likely makes up for it.

He also starts with high Heart/social skills, good combat, resources/treasures so we can probably get better "exercising" gear/tutors to make our commitment count for more.

So I'm leaning something like "Poor, Heavy + every 2 weeks, Refined Existence" or "forbidden/wealthy, heavy + 2 weeks, refined existence".

[] one large disciple handed you a rock when that rock glowed yellow he exclaimed that your soul must be very strong… not that you feel that way (gain another soul contract slot which doesn't count towards the difficulty unlocking new ones).

higher attributes easier to raise is mostly self-explanatory. except maybe could you explain the difference between tiers?

legacies... well, it's very vague, so hard to judge.

...oh, soul contract slot! of course! I didn't get it before, but it obviously means we can take a second oath near immediately if we want to. and it implies that each new oath slot is harder to unlock. It might be better than I gave it credit for...

I'm a bit worried about the pacing of the quest. Every turn being one week means it will take 52 turns to finish a year. In xianxia thousands of years have to pass before you become a powerful entity.

there's a few outlier quests, like Konoha Sect of Chakra Cultivation where it's explained that basically chakra is a massive cheat compared to qi at the lower steps (up to high rank Nascent Soul, basically).

And this seems to be a different setting, as Qi hasn't been mentioned at all yet. so who knows, maybe cultivation is faster here.

or maybe we're just the equivalent of step 1 body refinement cultivators, and if/when we reach a higher rank we'll move to month/year/decade long turns.

i think we should take the most bang for our buck( rank per ap) we can for our first contract. we know too little. I do not want to be the lazy noble, for rational reasons( ressources can be aquired, and i like ap more than money) and irrational ones( in this kind of quest i want to go ALL THE WAY, and this character clearly doesnt, it would feel weird) . I want the legacy, because it will give us another choice, and is apparently rarer then the other two. Getting another contract is awesome, but i read legacys description as : you can choose a power with metaaplications. so: contract slot: one power for one price, much choice. legacy: one power,maybe-meta, with limited choice.

i do not like the strength one.Its strong, but there is no freedom, and right now we have the least knowledge. Going single attribute, right at the start feels way more inflexible than the limited choice of legacy.
i admit its a gamble, but i think it is worth it.

but much of this is personal preference

except maybe could you explain the difference between tiers?
Tiers multiply your attribute, having 7 body at tier 2 is equivalent to having body 14 (your attribute being the number of dice you roll for the relevant challenge), they also have a few other effects but that will be reveled when its actually relevant.

And this seems to be a different setting, as Qi hasn't been mentioned at all yet. so who knows, maybe cultivation is faster here.
It is both slow and absurdly fast at the same time. but again it shouldn't really be a problem all the background math is calibrated to weekly turn lengths and I wouldn't design something that takes 50+ turns just to get anywhere.

oh, a lot of it is simply down to preference, sure.

about the noble, keep in mind that resources can be leveraged. Especially in the beginning they can be a powerful multiplier, allowing us to get more out of our limited pool of APs.

personally I'm leaning for poor, heavy every two weeks, and refined existence because it kind of reminds me of Sairaorg, a pretty cool Highschool DxD character that basically starts very weak, without the usual inherited power of his family, and just... trains himself to be OP.

also a bit of Saitama, I suppose.

There can be some charm into beating weird and exotic power through clever application of brute strenght.

of course there can be plenty of fun in creatively using original and quirky powers.

mh... would a "wealth" power help in acquiring wealth, or make us stronger BASED on our wealth? Because one is good for the poor origin, the other better suited to the noble one.

i like these kind of quests for the weird power combinations.
training is useful, but in this setting not as satisfying to me. if there was some sort of magic to train- but no

it feels like going to one piece and not eating a devilfruit.
Yes you can be strong without one, but i have read way to many mangas with amazing abilities, that are then exclusively used to punch people. Yes luffy mainly punches people, but he is really not my favourite. Thats chopper.

I'm going to wait a bit more to make plans. In particular I'd like to understand if the wealth pick means it's a power requiring wealth, or helping MAKING wealth/becoming wealthy.

one is obviously very unsuited to the poor start.

I think I'm near certainly going to go with Heavy + 2 weeks (so +5 oath rank), and I'll PROBABLY go refined existence to multiply the benefits of the forced training.

for the oath power, I don't have a strong preference, but I'm leaning Time, Wealth or Wisdom.

It could be both, although if you're picking the poor background, I'm not going to screw you and give you something that requires wealth to actually use.

[X] Plan: The Power of Friendship
-[X] You were a criminal.

in that case... I'll propose a couple of plans.

all of them come with Heavy + every 2 weeks, as it's simply the most efficient pick, and the "every week" is a bit too much for the extra benefit.

[x]Plan Never Again
-[x] You were poor.
-[x] After your physical they took small blood sample from you to test and what the result cam back they marked you as possessing a refined existence… whatever that is. (Start with all of your attributes in the second tier and make them easier to raise).

-[x] wealth.

-[X] Aurora
-[X] Female

a poor girl, swearing herself to a path that will result in never being poor again.

Our family can't support us, but maybe WE can support our family.
Plan need money to make money
-[x] You were forbidden.
-[x] After your physical they took small blood sample from you to test and what the result cam back they marked you as possessing a refined existence… whatever that is. (Start with all of your attributes in the second tier and make them easier to raise).

-[x] wisdom.

-[X] Aurora
-[X] Female

as above, but she picks the power of wisdom to find out how to pursue her goal of "being lazy".

Only to then realize that hey, the solution was probably to not commit to such heavy training forever

Who knows, maybe she'll grow to enjoy it in time...
