In case you couldn't tell, a major draw of this wish is that it is a tremendously bad idea that seems reasonable on the surface.
The greatest flaw is that it, as far as I can see, sandbags explicitly because "Losing is fun." All peripheral justifications are far-fetched at best; no part of a wish that includes an extremely obvious "get fucked" price is reasonable, in character.

Losing is fun when you are making an earnest attempt to play. Randomly deciding to fall into a puddle or smashing your face on a nail is not fun.

I am sympathetic to game'y wishes that might not work out, fwiw. They are fun, particularly those that have plot-and-playstyle already baked in, just... See above.

[X] I wish that the efforts of others to benefit me are enhanced.

We are going to get our friends to contract, most likely. We are not in a region lacking in witches. We are not bound to play a solo operator; in fact, SV pretty much n e v e r does that in PMMM quests, and I don't see us starting now.

Therefore, this sort of wishes we could get a lot of mileage out of.

It also encourages us to seek out friends without conflicting with the "Rachel denies friends being important" wall. It has an in-character justification as to why the Incubator-logic would agree with this wish, given the % extraction chances could use some enhancement.

I'd rather sit on this for a couple of days, but I am pretty sure that outcome is being decided here and now, so.

That's a good point, also others doesn't specify human Rachel could intend for it to apply to the incubator transfer when she made it. It could also apply to grief seed effectiveness considering witches would be others and they would be making a effort to benefit you by taking your grief.
If it doesn't apply to witches as it is, I would rephrase it so that it does, but I think it does as it is.

Yeah, I like this one because it's so general-purpose and can be leveraged into all kinds of useful situations. Also, magically enhanced therapy? Magically enhanced therapy. Rachel needs so much magically enhanced therapy.

She probably won't get it, but oh well, them's the breaks of being a meguca.

As far as I can see, it is an attempt to bypass the characterization outlined so far. Rachel is dissociating something fierce and is willfully ignorant about a lot of things - to get that wish through, I dunno. A lot of things gonna need to be ignored for this to work. Then, if it works, a lot of character work that is meant to be the point of a story is cleanly bypassed. Then what?
I mean, I can see where you're coming from with this. But we've seen that Rachel is affected greatly by the absence of her mom, as seen when she kind of just... Shuts down at the mention of it. She's had 15 years to stew in that, believing that one day she would get a wish. I would be surprised if even the emotionally repressed Rachel has never considered the option of bringing her mom back to life or entertained the idea on some level.

Not to mention that it's the anniversary of her death and it was brought up earlier today - it's fresh on the mind. Making a bit of an irrational decision in favor of the mother isn't all that unlikely all things considered. Plus it's fun to embrace the internal conflict.

[X] A wish born from the Vessel's heart, to know a love that was denied. "I wish my mother never died."

… I was a bit on the edge on witch hunter vs team player, but the potential for Trauma Time™ and ✨Drama✨ is too tempting for me to take!

I mean, given the likelihood of us convincing The Gang™ to Contract, and the high unlikelihood that they'd do so if we told them what the contract entails…

I can already taste the moment that Kyubey reveals that they'd sold their souls and that their friend had knowingly damned them to Soul Destruction or becoming writhing masses of utter despair and grief so strong it twists their souls into a different shape! It'd either emotionally annihilate Rachel or her friends. Of course… we could just… not lie to them… but that's less fun.

Also, we're gonna get destroyed if we're ever caught out alone by rivals, aren't we… eh. Oh well. All for Trauma Time™! ✨Drama✨ Magically enhanced therapy!

Plus, it'd make sense for both Rachel's logic and emotions.

Rachel would probably see it as just maximizing the resources available to her, namely her friend with above-average Potential, as well as the tendency for girls working in a team to survive.

Subconsciously, I see Rachel's kind of a very lonely person deep down. I could definitely see a wish centered around working with others to be connected to her deep-seated issues on loneliness, given her relationship with her friends (Breaking down into happy tears when they said they'd stick together!!!), reaction to the mere mention of her dead mother, and seeming distance from her dad.

Add on the bits about her hatred of not being part of the collective and panic at the idea of being referred to in the singular? Is it that odd that somebody who spent multiple lifetimes as part of a collective would desire not to be alone? Is it that odd that the girl who almost spent her entire birthday alone doing homework would cry happy tears when her friends said they'd stick with her?

It's a wish that's perfectly in character to me. Just effective and rational enough for her to rationalize and ignore her emotions. Just emotional enough to be akin to a cry for help from the lonely soul buried deep down. Rachel doesn't want to be alone, and the wish reflects that. A wish that only works when she's not alone.

Considered it a bit, this is a good wish. The reasoning given is solid, and it opens up some really intriguing story possibilities. I'll accede to the majority.

Just as a heads up, the vote will be closing on Sunday at 10 PM instead. Going to leave it open for a bit longer than the previous ones because it's a rather important decision. (And also I have some stuff I need to get done over the weekend)

[X] I wish that the efforts of others to benefit me are enhanced

I have wanted to chime in on this thread for a while, but timezones haven't lined up, but I thankfully am able to now with the most important vote so far, and the logic used to define this option is so delicious I simply couldn't not pick it. Bravo on thinking of such a delicious and in character wish that still leaves so much room for the plot to get spicy!

Something I thought about: would the Incubator Collective be considered an Other by this Wish?

I don't see why it wouldn't count; I hope it's the same with witches taking grief, although that might be more of a stretch. I think that is part of the justification for Rachel is that it should make the incubators chances of success greater.

I'd assume that the Incubators would work, but not Witches/Grief Seeds. From the wording of 'I wish that the efforts of others to benefit me are enhanced', it has one requirement for something to be enhanced.

The 'other' must be working in an attempt to benefit Rachel.

The Collective working is arguable, but it depends on whether the collective sees integration as a benefit to Rachel, which I believe they would, given she asked for it. They are trying to benefit her, so it is enhanced.

I don't believe this would work on Witches. The important part that makes me think that would be the 'to' in the wording, as compared to using word 'that'. The other's goal must be an active attempt to benefit us. Not an attempt that benefits, but an attempt to benefit.

They must directly attempt/try to benefit us. As far as I know, Grief seeds are not trying to benefit us. They are doing so, but are not doing so with the goal of helping the magical girl. In the end, intention seems to be the main requirement here, which I do not believe Witches have, though that may vary depending on the specifics of the Witch and how conscious Grief Seeds actually are.

In other words, just because they happen to be helping Rachel does not mean they are making an 'effort to help Rachel'. Like if someone in the apartment next to yours stopped playing absurdly loud music while you were trying to sleep because their work shift changed. Sure, they did something that did benefit you, but they did not do it with the intention of benefiting you, so it doesn't qualify.

Interestingly, this brings up the idea of something doing something they believe would benefit us, but would actually be a detriment. Like a magical girl attempting to kill us because we might eventually turn into a witch, so dying would be better. They would be making an attempt to 'benefit' us, in their point of view. They make an effort to benefit Rachel, it just so happens that their idea of 'benefit' would be death. I'd assume it wouldn't work, but it depends whether 'benefit' works off of the 'other' person's definition of benefit or off of Rachel's. Just something to think about, I guess.

Ah well, it appears that we aren't doing my idea. Sad. No grief implosion for us!

Anyway, it'll be interesting to see where this goes

That was the intent.

From the wording of 'I wish that the efforts of others to benefit me are enhanced', it has one requirement for something to be enhanced.
Yeah, limitations needed to be introduced to make sure it isn't a nothingburger wish with no impact.

As conceived - it needs other people, it needs targeted intent and it needs for other people to be at least somewhat capable of attempting to do [action] to enhance the [action].

Interestingly, this brings up the idea of something doing something they believe would benefit us, but would actually be a detriment.
It is Rachel's wish, so her definition of "benefit" prolly has primacy. The basic silliness is likely to get filtered. But Rachel has her own set of very unhealthy beliefs that someone could use to manipulate a trigger, should they be aware of them.

And there is definitely a lot of space for borderline scenarios where magic might produce unpredictable effects, even without going in-depth with Rachel's idiosyncrasies. Consider an overly harsh school teacher trying to teach her something.

there was like 400 words of speculations that I intentionally edited out because it is prolly too early, and then some stuff I misedited and accidentally deleted. oh well

From my perspective, I was trying to make something that seemed justifiable in-character while also causing a *lot* of interesting trauma, drama, and issues

But yea, most humans wouldn't have a wish like that.

Either way, it's not like it really matters now

  • [X] I wish that the efforts of others to benefit me are enhanced.
[X] I Wish for my soul gem to the indestructible and incorruptible. This means that it cannot be destroyed or tainted. However, I know that magic has its costs. I don't have enough potential to negate them. So, in addition I wish for whatever costs I need to accomplish this, both natural and the excess that is no doubt required, be paid to me NOW so that I can achieve my impossible desires!
[X] A wish born from the Vessel's heart, to know a love that was denied. "I wish my mother never died."

June 8th: A Wish is Made
There are, quite obviously, a lot of options open to you. You could go with the safe and assured route, as your former self suggested, and simply wish for more power directly. It would be a guaranteed way to ensure your effectiveness, but it would grant you little to no utility, and that lack of utility could prove to be a critical weakness. Power is only useful so long as it has a way to be utilized, after all.

What else could you do? You briefly consider something entirely different. A wish that could grant you as much power as possible, by paying an upfront cost, but quickly decide against it. To call it risky was an understatement, and you have no idea what the end result would actually be. Fascinating potential outcome or not, you'd much rather not be the test subject for such an experiment.

Then another thought crosses your mind, leaking in from the vessel. It wants to meet her so badly, to beg for forgiveness, but you easily overrule it. Not only would such a wish have way too many knock-on effects, it would also ultimately give you little practical benefit. And regardless, you had nothing to apologize for. She would be dead regardless of whether that wish had brought this existence into being or not. If anything, at least you gave the child's body life.
but
No, you have a much better idea. If you yourself are unable to be powerful, why not simply empower those around you when they work to your benefit? Not only would it benefit you, but it would by extension benefit everyone around you, allowing your your relatively meager amount of power to hopefully be utilized to its maximum efficiency.
is
"I wish that the efforts of others to benefit me are enhanced." You transmit over.
that
"Interesting." The terminal responds, as it reaches its manipulators into the vessel.
even
You're immediately struck by the pain. It... is almost indescribable. It isn't merely physical, nor even simply mental, but something else altogether. It is as if your very existence itself ached. It is an abstract pain, a statement which rightfully should not ever be so much as conceivable. And yet, as the manipulators draw themselves up from the vessel's chest and you let out a quiet hiss, you can think of no better way to try and convey the sensation.
true?
"Your wish has successfully reduced entropy."

Finally, the manipulators are drawn out of the vessel entirely, and the pain begins to lessen. Slowly, an object is formed in the air, and as it grows more solid, the pain continues to lessen ever more, before, at long last, it drops into your hands.

You stare at the white gem with red highlights, wrapped in a cage of gold. Unlike most soul gems that you've seen, there are no emblems or other decorations on it. In fact, it is almost remarkably plain, barring its odd multicolored hue.

"We look forward to seeing the repercussions of this decision." Your former self says. When you turn the vessel to look, they've already vanished, leaving you alone once more in the hallway.

And then the door to the guest room opens up, with the sudden noise startling you.

"Uh... Rachel, are you okay?" Emma asks, concerned. "We heard some weird noises coming from the hallway and... what's that you got there?" She asks, gesturing to your hands.

"N-nothing!" The vessel stutters out, hiding what, technically, was now your actual being from sight. "And I'm fine, I was just about to head to bed." You silently curse the human amygdala and prefrontal cortex for their role in the human sensation of surprise.

"Oooookay. Well, me and Jess are gonna do the same. Catch ya in the morning?"

"See you then." The vessel offers, before the door to the guest room closes. You faintly hear the two having a conversation, but you've already begun heading to the vessel's room, and don't feel it that important to listen in. When you enter, you have the vessel gently set the soul gem down on the bedside table, before having it lie down on its bed, exhausted from the day.

Finally.

Finally.

You were one step of the way there. You didn't need to keep up this charade for the entity of a human lifetime, before perishing like any other biological life form. And by being one step of the way, you've now proven that it's possible to keep going, and soon, you'll be back where you belong.

As the vessel's eyelids become heavy, and sleep beckons once more, you allow yourself to drift off into what you imagine will be yet another nonsensical dream.

Meanwhile...

The real April Fool's joke is me being able to regularly update things for seemingly the first time in years. Also, I truthfully didn't expect for people to vote to be a team support of all things. I guess the former Incubator being a buffer does make some sense, at least.
