I meant to give Soulgem Lexi so that Momoka would not die even if her body was killed. It's still very risky, both because Momoka is pretty anomalous and because a lot of it means counting on Kyoko or Mami being around to deal with the witch, but it seems to have a better chance of success than just leaving Lexi behind.
Wayyyy too risky to drop our soulgem in someone else's hands. Remember, we don't even know her now, and nor does anyone know it's significance other than ourselves. Anyways, if our body was chomped/cut apart/lethally maimed ala Mami and our soul gem survived we'd still be dead, even IF Kyoko/Lexi knew about soul gems AND had several grief seeds to burn AND managed to recover a near-complete body, it isn't cheap at all. Generally speaking, if our body dies, we are as well, regardless, so tossing around our soul gem is almost never going to be to our benefit in any way shape or form. I'd vote against it if I could.

It's just a bad move. Just support with bow, doing stupid shit or leaning too hard on Madoka because we never devote our time to dedicated practice in lieu of social-fu is how you bad-end in PMMM. I hope this time you guys learned that lesson - proficiency first. Bonds after, we can't keep winging it and getting our ass kicked by a few weak familiars, especially once the main plot starts.

[X] Try and summon a ranged weapon.

Yes, as I said, this is more of a variant of despair, let's hope it doesn't come to that.

By the way, none of the options have a danger indicator, which either means that they are all safe, or - which is much more likely - they have approximately the same level of danger.

[X] Try and summon a ranged weapon.
-[X] Give Lexi a sword-spear to help her fight.
--[X] Fend off the familiars together with Lexi and protect Sayaka.

Well, the reason for that is because when you're in a barrier, danger/risk of death is implied/and or assumed. It's why before you entered the barrier, it was red and why none of the choices from then on have been colored. Death lingers around every corner in a witch barrier. I can color code the choices as all being red if people would like from here on, if they want it that way.

Maybe not all of the choices in Labyrinths, buuut if you want to mark something as "this is extremely dangerous even by the standards of a Witch Labyrinth"… :V

[X] Try to pull out a ranged weapon of some sort. Bow, gun, doesn't matter as long as it will work from a distance.
-[X] If you succeed, fight alongside Lexi to the best of your ability.

--[X] Well, you say alongside. Really, it would be more "Lexi stalls the Familiars while you shoot them" if this goes as planned.
-[X] If it doesn't work, take Sayaka and get out, leaving Lexi to fend off the Familiars.

Tallying votes. Will close voting at 10 PM EST. Will try to get a post up tomorrow. If not, expect it either Saturday or Sunday. My work schedule is kind of screwing with me (I work til 11:30PM this Sunday), so will be a little rocky. Will do what I can though.

Update: I have drafted the outline for the post. This work day sucks, so I'll be writing it tomorrow when I'm off work. Thanks for being patient.

Post is basically done. Going to do an editing pass over and post it tomorrow. I don't want to post another mess again.

Episode 5 - 6

To the 'you' of right now, this was supposed to be a sacrifice. A noble sacrifice that Lexi couldn't come back from. Well, not noble, per se, but a sacrifice all the same. She wanted you to get away with Sayaka, whatever the cost. The 'you' of this world should protest and fight her, tell her to walk away with Sayaka while you stay behind.

However, that wasn't you. Lexi's disposition and predicament had not changed. Just because death didn't lie at the end of her choice didn't mean it wouldn't be painful.

Help me.

From the confines of Chiyo's distorted form, she made an earnest plea. A desperate prayer for an escape. There was no way to imagine how much time she's lost up until now. Fleeting moments lost because of a wish she never made, to monsters she could never hope to fight. She would be alone, fighting against creatures she had no hope of winning against.

Your vision blurs. Your hand shakes as you clasp your shoulder to stop the bleeding. Despite your wounds, you take yet another step forward. "Sit Sayaka down against the railing behind us."

"Oh, you're deaf." Lexi frowns.

"We're making a stand."

Even if you weren't strong enough, you weren't letting anyone die.

"Stand?" Lexi's eyes go wide. "Nah, I think you're just going to collapse, bleed out and probably die."

You ignore her biting words.

"Put Sayaka down, we're holding the line."

Lexi scoffs, crouching low to let Sayaka slide off her back. Unconscious, Sayaka lay against the railing. Aside from a few scrapes, she was okay.

You were on time. You weren't too late.

The only thing you had left to do was get them out.

You turn toward the black mass rushing up the spiraled walkway. Their ascent slows as they begin to pull and prod at each other. Familiars in the back grasp the legs of those in the front. They trip as their cohorts from the back leap over them. It was like crabs in a bucket, constantly dragging each other down into the bottom. The only difference was they continued to advance, despite the setback.

Magic coalesces into your hand. It elongates and thins out, solidifying into the form of a red sword-spear. The new weight forces you to stumble. You stab it into the ground to regain your balance.

"Here." You do your best to stand as you push off of the spear.

"You're crazy." Lexi pulls the weapon out of the ground.

"That makes two of us."

The maelstrom of darkness drew closer. No portraits in sight. The black familiars gnash their teeth and grind their claws in anticipation of a great feast. A lump forms in your throat as you shake the anxiety away.

Creating the spear was easy enough; it was a weapon you had experience with wielding. The magic associated with it was another story entirely. Whether it was the limit of your abilities or the nature of how your magic worked, you didn't know.

If there was ever a time to push your limits, it was now.

Magical energy fills your body.

The pain in your leg and shoulder numbs.

Your blurred vision becomes clear.

It was a rudimentary application of magic. If you were right, it was the same method that magical girls used when fighting witches. Pushing it just a little more to support Lexi shouldn't have been an issue.

It was time to conjure the bow. You reach your hands out and let the magic flow freely through your body and mind. It carves a curved crescent as you clasp its shining form.

Then, all at once, a white flash.

"Ah!" You yelp as the soul gem shines with a bright light.

A veneer of static clouds your vision. The visage of a girl standing against the tide. A bow in hand. An ephemeral pink flame against the darkness.

I wasn't strong enough.

The will of the soul gem cries out as the bow shatters.

Sweat drips from your brow. You clasp your chest in a desperate attempt to catch your breath.

"I told you so." Lexi grasps the spear in both hands. "Last chance. Grab your friend and go."

You grit your teeth in defiance toward Lexi and your limits.

Lexi runs toward the procession of familiars just a few meters away. She stabs forward with the spear. The pointed tip nails one of the familiars in the head, forcing it to the ground. Another familiar swipes at her leg. Lexi pivots, thrusting the spear straight through the creature's mouth and out the other side. "Are you going to run or not?"

No, you weren't.

It could've been anything. A gun, a slingshot -- but the image of that bow. It was what you needed at this moment. Nothing else would work.

Focus on the bow. The memory tied to it. The warmth of the pink flame. Focus.

Make the bow.

Think. You hold your hand out, force magical energy into your palm, and form the shape. It snakes outward, slowly bending before shattering.

Why?

Why wasn't it coming?

I let you die.

Static.

More pain.

You wince.

Lexi swings wide. The familiars space themselves to avoid the head of the spear. Four of the spindly creatures move past her. They were heading toward you and Sayaka.

"No you don't!" Lexi turns and sprints to route them.

She jumps on top of one's head, forcing it to faceplant. The sword-spear lunges forward to stab another in the back.

"I told you to run!" She yells.

"Tch." You grimace, conjuring a white sword. You force magical energy into your hand and throw it.

More pain.

The blade tears into the monster, stabbing it straight through the eye. As the second closes in, you conjure another sword. You step forward, cleaving a clean downward arc.

Its arms go flying.

Another swing.

The familiar falls to the ground at Sayaka's feet.

"I can handle a few. Just not…" You struggle through your breaths as you look up. "Lexi, behind you!"

"I know!" Lexi swings wide.

She clips two or three. Not enough to inhibit them for more than a second. The black mass begins to slowly circle Lexi.

She slashes, lunges, and pokes with the spear. Even with their thinning numbers, the familiars encircle her. The echo of their gnashing teeth is almost enough to drown out Lexi's voice.

"You got time! Go!" Lexi pleads.

"Not without you!"

"Don't worry about me! Just go!"

No. You weren't backing down.

Dive deep. Dig deep. It didn't matter the cost.

Focus. Focus on the bow.

You repeat the words in your head as you hold your hand out. The familiar's getting close meant you and Sayaka died too.

At this point, it didn't matter what happened to you -- all you needed was an answer. Why was the soul gem fighting against you?

More static. A distant cry.

Your perception shifts as if watching a film reel.

Gone was the imagery of Lexi overcome by a wave of darkness, replaced by a familiar memory from another time.

Through the distant city ruins of another world, a white flash illuminates the dream. Rocks and shrapnel dot the landscape. The clouds part from above to reveal the evening sun. Frigid water licks at your shins, pulling you from your languor. You rub your eyes, refocusing your vision.

It wasn't Lexi on the ground. No, it was someone else. A rock blocks your view of everything but her head.

It was Madoka.

The image of the bow flashes into your mind. A bent branch with a glistening rose at the top.

You trudge forward through the water as fast as you can. You try to yell her name, but no words come. As you round the rock, another figure comes into view. A girl with long, pink hair with a hand on Madoka's chest. Her hair was disheveled, her eyes wet with rain and tears. Her rusted armored dress sits with frayed fabric.

It was you.

You see from her eyes.

Madoka's pale face and soft smile.

You reach forward and wipe the blood from her face.

"I wasn't strong enough." Words not your own exit your mouth as you hug Madoka close.

"I wasn't strong enough to protect you."

A bid for power even though you already had the wish granted. Even in the future, it wasn't enough. No matter what you tried, the only thing that would remedy your plight was time. Time you didn't have, time you would have to return for.

Homura's shield should do it. But, wasn't it the same as running away?

No, you would persevere in this world for as long as you could. Fighting like you always had. Harden your heart, bolster your resolve, and continue walking forward.

No. These weren't your thoughts, your feelings. They were hers.

This isn't what you wanted.

What you wanted was hope.

A hope casted from the future into the past, and into your present.

You hold Madoka close. Even though she was cold, even if she had passed on here, that didn't mean that hope had been lost or abandoned.

"After losing her, I fought alone. Even if it was pointless, I still had hope in my heart."

Without your sister, fighting on already lost meaning. No, it wasn't just your sister. Without Sayaka, your friends, persisting in a world without them felt meaningless. You didn't want to lose anyone.

"We were always at each other's side. Always and forever."

Yeah, that was true. But now, in this moment, if you failed to protect Sayaka and Lexi, it would be all for nothing.

"We wanted to make everyone happy. It didn't matter if they were magical girls or just normal people."

It wasn't a bad way to live. In fact, part of you wishes you could do that. Could have done that.

"We made a promise to one another. If one of us turned into a witch, we would…"

She was the one who did it. The other you was responsible for that vision. She was grieving the loss of the sister she killed. It was a mercy. She wouldn't want the world to be dyed black by her despair.

"We clung to whatever hope we could, even if it was impossible."

That was true even now.

"At the end of this long road, all I could do was turn around and walk away."

No. The road may have been paved with blood, with sacrifice, but no one could say it was wrong. All she was doing was looking for a second chance. A chance to undo the tragedy that had befallen her sister.

How could that be called running away?

You force the words out of your mouth. Even if you were silent, even if she couldn't hear you, you wanted to speak to her.

"I don't want to make any empty promises. But just know that my wish and yours are the same."

The soul gem resonates. It shines as splendid as the day you first saw it.

"I'll protect her, no matter what. So that you won't have to cry. It's the least I can do for you and for me."

"Yeah.
"

"Leave it to me. I'll make sure we go home smiling with everyone."

"That's something I could never do."

"That's not true. I'm sure she was happy until the very end."

You don't see her, you don't feel her, but a weight presses down onto your shoulder.

"Never look back. Never surrender. For her sake and mine, continue fighting."

The pain stops.

The wounds mend.

Your vision was clear.

In your hands wasn't a bow, but two halves of a whole.

A white sword, for the time you spent with Midori.

A black blade, for the future that the other you had cast away.

You join the hilts together. They meld and merge, curving back into a glistening crescent.

A bow -- one half white, one half black. The weapon of the sister you would lose in the near future. Pink energy dances at your fingertips as you pull the string back.

A unity of past, present, and future.

"Lexi, move!" You release the string.

The arrow flies. Not toward the familiars, but to the sky. The pink arrow explodes, expanding outward. A symbol appears in the sky as lines carve themselves into the air. Circles form, expanding outward as if drawn by an unseen hand. Arcane runes line the outside of the contours.

Pink arrows rain down in a bombardment. Upon impact they detonate. Each and every projectile strikes true.

Through the head, through the arms, through the legs.

Each and every familiar explodes into light.

Lexi runs. She runs as fast as she can through the bombardment. She skips, leaps, and skids to your feet to evade the explosions.

"At least warn me if you're going to carpet bomb them."

"I, uh--" You blink, looking out over the raining devastation. "Sorry?"

"Sorry?" She sighs. "Whatever."

She looks back out over the battlefield.

Pink flames riddle the path.

Not a single familiar in sight.

"Thanks for buying me time." You smile. "I appreciate it."

"Right." Lexi looks past you. "But what about your friend?"

"Oh!" The bow dissipates into thin air. "Sayaka."

Your magical girl attire vanishes as you approach her. You check her pulse as a matter of course. Another look over and you sigh in relief. "She'll be alright."

"Well, with them out of the way…" Lexi hoists the spear on her shoulder. "What now?"

"What do you mean? I came to get you guys, so …"

"There's another magical girl fighting the witch. So, we could probably just leave."

Another magical girl? That made sense, considering Kyouko was here at the mall.

You look further down the walkway. Then, down at your body. Your injuries were completely healed. Were you doing something different with the magic?

No, that wasn't it. Magic was flowing through it like before, but it didn't hurt at all.

You clench your palm and then look at the finger with the sigil. It was a pristine gold. No longer blotched or murky. A part of you was worried, but you shove the thought away with a shake of the head.

"So, what's the plan?" Lexi asks.

Given your current state, you could probably help. But then again, you weren't so sure. So, you …

[_] … proceed to help Kyouko fight the witch. Two magical girls were better than one.
[_] … it was best to escort Lexi and Sayaka out. Kyouko was competent, so she should be fine fighting something like this.

Momoka just locked in. We gotta go help Kyouko. Lexi put on a really impressive performance with the swordspear so I think now we can place our faith in her to protect Sayaka and escape themselves.

So it looks like the body's connection with the Soul Gem has now been completed properly, and there is no turning back for Momoko.

Episode 5 - 7
It didn't need another thought. You were going to help Kyouko. Your legs start moving before you even have a chance to stop. A strange premonition drives you forward. If you don't move, something is going to happen. Something you could avert. You run as fast as you can further down the winding spiral. The world blurs as you run. The magic flowing through your body feels natural, like it wasn't fighting against your every movement. It was as though you were as light as a feather.

"Protect Sayaka, Lexi!"

"Wait, what?" Lexi says as she pulls Sayaka onto her back. "Hey, are you going to tell me what you're doing?"

"Sorry!" You yell. "I'm going to help Kyouko! I have a bad feeling!"

"Bad feeling, she says." Lexi scoffs as you run out of earshot.

You trusted Lexi to take care of her. There were no signs of any familiars coming. If there were any still around, they were likely heading to the center of the barrier to aid their master. You didn't need to be an experienced magical girl to guess that much. Get there as fast as you can to support her.

You just hope you weren't too late.

Steel clatters against steel. Sparks illuminate the endless void. Kyouko thrusts her lance forward, the head bending the witch's caged body. It laughs as the chains hanging from its body come to life like metal serpents. They lash forward, swiping at the descending magical girl. She retracts her spear, batting away the chains as she lands on the spiral walkway.

"You think you can beat me like that?" Kyouko scoffs.

Despite the bravado, it felt as though she wasn't making much progress against the witch. She was expecting a one-and-done, especially at the mall in broad daylight. It wasn't that uncommon; she's fought witches in stranger places than this. Still, something about the situation rubbed her the wrong way. It didn't help that the witches body consisted of a metal cage, scalding 'paint' and chains. Getting a single drop of that acid on her was enough to spell her end.

The witch chuckles as it flings its chains forward. They fly forward toward Kyouko. She leaps back, further up the winding walkway. She leaps again and again in rhythm as the onslaught continues.

The cage holding the paper 'heart' opens and closes, almost as if it was laughing at her.

Kyouko skids to a stop, her stance low.

It was a bad match-up. Even if she employed her enchantment magic or rather, Rosso Phantasma as Mami is quick to remind her, it wouldn't be enough. It still put her at risk of a counter. From what she's seen of the witch, it excels at close to mid-range combat. The scalding liquid offered a lot in terms of offense and defense. Even if Kyouko was a magical girl, that acid was bad news. Again, a single splash, or just a drop, would be the end.

Chains rupture the darkness as they fly past Kyouko. Drops of red paint fall from the chain links. The walkway sizzles as it slowly melts away.

"Trying to trap me?" Kyouko frowns. "Alright the-"

Her eyes widened.

The witch's heft slams straight into Kyouko. It was going to press her into the wall, melt her bones, crush her into paste, and obtain the feast it felt it deserved.

Or rather, that was the plan.

Upon contact, the image of Kyouko disperses.

The master of the domain pulls back from the wall, the cage maneuvering around like a head, trying to locate its target. The flowing red acid had stopped.

Now was her chance.

"I can't believe this is working twice! You're not very bright, are you!?"

A spear flies straight down from the heavens, stabbing straight into the cage. The metallic lining begins to bend and snap under the force of the impact. The chains pull back from the wall and circle around for Kyouko. They move through the air as a snake moves through grass.

"No you don't!" Kyouko lands atop the cage as it begins to fall. Her hands clasp together as magic flows forth. A cage composed of red and black diamonds forms out of thin air. A floating box that halts the chains advance and the witch's fall.

The witch's metal body bounces against the bottom of the magic cage. It wouldn't hold for long, but it wasn't meant to.

"Have to make this count." Kyouko mutters as she pulls the spear back. One more thrust is all it took. All she had to do was--

Sizzle.

Crack.

The barrier broke.

"Shit-!" Kyouko lurches forward, pivoting toward the chains. She parries one chain and leaps off the witch's body past the second. The third and fourth seize her legs.

The two descend through the abyss as the chains tighten their grip. They pull Kyouko through the air, placing her just below the body, the 'heart'. The acid ink flows once more like a fountain, dripping forth with the cage as its center.

Correction; it was going to melt her to nothing, then crush her.

Kyouko grips her spear and swings in a wide arc. The tip of the spear rips through the chains as she flies toward the flowing scarlet waterfall. She conjures another barrier made of red and black diamonds. Kyouko rolls into the barrier, gets to her feet and sprints toward solid ground.

Just a few more feet.

One more jump would be enough.

Chains burst through the barrier as they lunge at Kyouko. She decouples her spear, thrusting the head into the nearby wall. The chains grasp at the open air as Kyouko flies ahead. The spear retracts as she flips through the air, landing on what remains of the walkway.

"You're a really stubborn bastard." She grins. "But I really don't have time to play with you all day, you know?"

The witch flies through the air past the walkway. Wind brushes by, forcing Kyouko to brace herself. What was the witch doing? It hoists its body in the air as if it were a chandelier. It was upside down with the chains above and the body below.

Wait.

"Shit!" Kyouko claps. A barrier forms all around her. Multiple layers weave into each other for further protection. One layer, two, three, five, ten.

It begins to rain. Not water, not blood, but acid. The witch's body spins like a sprinkler watering a garden. Instead of giving life to the soil, it burns it away upon contact. The liquid splashes onto the first layer of the barrier, eating it away.

Think. Think.

There had to be a way out of this.

The second layer burns.

Rosso Phantasma might be able to do something. No, the illusions weren't solid. There had to be something else she could do.

The third layer.

The fourth.

She could make a path toward the exit with her barriers. Kyouko turns to look up the path the two girls were running toward earlier. How far was it to the top?

So far that she couldn't see it. How far did they descend into the depths of the barrier? Did it even have an end? Pointless questions, honestly.

The sixth layer disperses.

Kyouko forms another layer and another.

The seventh melts.

Kyouko had people waiting for her. She couldn't die here. Momo was waiting. Mami was making dinner. Why was she thinking about this now? Was she going soft? If she was changing in some way, it was probably Mami's fault.

"Man." Kyouko sighs, gripping her spear. "This really sucks."

The eighth melts.

The ninth.

"But if you think I'm going down without a fight." Kyouko lowers herself, preparing to jump toward the witch. "You got another thing coming!"

Pink light flies through the air.

What? Where did that come from?

It flies through the acid, dispersing it upon contact. It whistles through the darkness before exploding.

Two of the chains were hit.

The acid raid stops.

"Go now!" A stranger screams from up above.

Kyouko smiles wide. "Got it!"

She becomes a red blur. Leaping from wall to wall as the witch's body falls through the air. "Gotcha!"

The spear strikes true. The cage holding the heart snaps. The witch's heart, its core, bleeds its last drop.

The battle was won.

The witch barrier begins to disperse.
Interlude End

It was done. You made it in time. If you hadn't, you didn't even want to consider what would've happened. Regardless, it was important that you came, and that you actually succeeded at what you set out to do. You sigh, the tension leaving your body as you collapse onto your rear. You were surprised you hadn't fallen unconscious like your first fight. Be grateful for small miracles, you think.

The world contorts around you as your armor vanishes into thin air. Your soul gem radiates a dim glow. It got darker. It made sense after all of the magic you used to bolster your body before and after the fight with the familiars. You stand up, using the concrete wall to support you from the back.

Where were Lexi and Sayaka?

"Hey." A familiar voice calls out to you.

You freeze up.

"Y-yes?"

"Thanks for the save."

"Ah, uh…" You avert her eyes. "I-I didn't… really do anything. That wasn't me, I mean."

"Then who was it?" Kyouko walks over, the grief seed in her hand. "Don't see any other magical girls around."

"No, what I meant to say is that it was me, but it wasn't?"

"Huh?"

Why did you say that? You blink, shaking your head. Don't screw this up. It's what you were here for. "I'm sorry. I'm really sorry."

"Stop apologizing." Kyouko scratches the back of her head. "You're going to give me a headache."

"Right." You look down.

This is the moment you've been waiting for, ever since you made your decision. A tightness grasps your chest.

"Here."

A grief seed flies toward you.

"Ah!" You struggle to catch it with one hand. "W-wait, why are you giving this to me?"

"What? Who said I was giving it to you?" Kyouko narrows her eyes. "It's got enough juice for two, and your soul gem isn't looking too great."

That was the other reason you came here. It was to purify your soul gem.

"Right."

It was like back then. The circumstances were different. Kyouko has given you another grief seed. This time it is for your own use, to regain the magic you lost against the familiars, against the witch, and during your training.

It was another choice. You felt it creeping up behind you. Another magical girl you could save. If you invoke her power again, it should be possible to save her the same way you saved Chiyo. You didn't know her, so you didn't owe her anything -- but neither did Madoka when she made the wish. She didn't owe anyone anything, yet she was willing to sacrifice for so many people.

Could you do the same thing? Could you deny your happiness for the sake of others? This was what you wanted, this is what you longed for. Right now, at this moment, this was another way forward. It was to reforge the bonds you've lost.

Were you willing to cast yourself into the void to save others?

If you forsake this magical girl, would you do the same for others?

No one would know.

No one would blame you, whichever choice you made.

You clasp the grief seed and …

[_] … invoke her power. Undo the fact she had turned into a witch. Search for another path forward with your soul gem in hand.
[_] … cleanse your soul gem. The present was all that you had right now. To give up even another moment was asking too much.
Another extremely important choice!
[_] ... invoke her power.
It's kind of obvious, but you would basically be going full Madokami route through this choice. From now, up until the start of the series (a few months), Momoka would likely dedicate herself to saving magical girls by defeating witches and 'cleansing' the Grief Seeds. The foundation of the world would be changed forever as you make way for the Law of Cycles.
[_] … cleanse your soul gem.
You choose to stay in the present world in order to spend time with and foster friendships with your loved ones. We'll call this route deviation the Bonds route. The world wouldn't change anymore than it already has.

I have events in mind for each route, and if you have questions about what each route entails, I'll try to answer them to the best of my ability so you can make informed decisions!

[X] … cleanse your soul gem.

Mhm... I'm gonna choose the "not a martyr" route. AKA stop being so damn lonely all the time.

"at"?

[X] … cleanse your soul gem.

Leaving aside all questions of ideology, morality and so forth, unless invoking Madokami's power comes with a cleanse for Momoka's Soul Gem, then we absolutely cannot afford to do that every time.

It actually does cleanse it. It cleanses + gives a refund.

[X] … invoke her power. Undo the fact she had turned into a witch. Search for another path forward with your soul gem in hand.
