This Mighty Scourge of War: A Reconstruction-Era Quest

[X] Nominate Winfield Scott Hancock for Vice President.

There's not actually any reason to nominate Stevens. The President will be a radical, and the National Union Party held together under the current radical sway will be far better prepared to pass a slate of strong reconstruction amendments through the usual process.

The US Constitution certainly has its flaws, but it's a stable enough foundation to build upon. Don't crash the car while the radicals are the ones driving it.

I think it largely depends on the opposition. If the splitting delegates can organize a strong enough campaign, we may not get reconstruction, period. But I doubt that will happen.
This is a very real possibility.

Constitutional amendments, which are what are most needed here, don't come directly from the Presidency nor actually require its approval. The National Union Party as a vehicle is what can make those amendments happen - an Article V convention is a far more dubious prospect, especially once the party has split.

Keep the War Democrats focused on fighting the Confederacy, and they at least won't bother to expend all their influence on opposing Reconstruction.

Sorry white moderates, the march of progress and equality shall go on with or without you.

A constitutional convention was beyond my hopes!

Time for the Second Republic.

Mind we have to remember how much its hell to pass bills in the United States and 19th century executives even post Lincoln are not the modern post WW2 imperial one.

Think long term. Rapid change might just break us. We have the rest of the world to worry about, like Mexico and whatever WWI is gonna look like.

Rapid change might break us, but slow walking it will be a poison pill.

Besides, we have an entire ocean between us and meddling European powers. I think, worst case scenario, we can afford a little breaking.

This is less about rapid change and more just...not being very good move. It's trading a radical Vice President for the existence of the National Union Party just as Reconstruction is about to begin.

Veep is simply not that important of an office, and the Presidency can't do many of the necessary tasks for Reconstruction. Doubling up on radical executives will come at the cost of officially starting the legal opposition to Reconstruction. The most important tasks that the Presidency will be doing are organizing with Congress and military occupation. Hancock likely won't do anything to compromise the latter since the whole raison d'être of the War Democrats is the Confederates as traitors.

The former requires high levels of Congressional cooperation. Conceding the veep will make that happen during the critical period where the legal basis of Reconstruction is formed. That's a lot more likely to work than trying to reformat the entire US through an Article V convention.
