Powder, Gears, and Blessed Steam - A WHF Engineering Quest

Yep, people will be beating our door down to have us make tanks for them. That's still quite a ways off sadly, since a Steam Tank is a Tier 6 Tech.

Yea, I'd love to make our own steam tank
I mean there are three core technologies that make up the steam tank from what I can tell.

1: A steam engine that is light enough and powerful enough to move the armored vehicle while powering the various systems.
2: The steam powered main cannon. Apparently it is smaller/lighter than equivalent Imperial cannons but is shorter ranged.
3. The secondary 'steam gun' which is essentially a steam based 'flame thrower' that sprayed super-heated steam at nearby targets.

Any one of these techs can lead to vast possibilities even on thier own.

The engines divorced from the need to fuel the steam guns means you can create a mobile firing platform or heavily armored ramming machine. Also there are of course civilian applications.
The steam cannon by itself wouldn't need as big an engine to power meaning that you could potentialy get a faster firing and more accurate cannon. No need to measure our powder etc, just ram the cannonball in, get the steam pressure to the needed levels for a shot going X distance and fire.
The steam gun on the other hand would be a little more difficult to manage depending on the amount/heat of steam needed for it to be effective. Though it could serve in a defensive role on fortifications to 'convince' attackers that closing on the walls is a very bad idea.

'I want a giant gold statue of myself right at the entrance to the Engineers School or you won't get even a peek at my blueprints until long after I'm dead!' :D

"Really? You had them of all beings make a gold statue of you. I thought I trained you to comprehend the notion of quality workmanship girl."
"I know it's Umgak work from top to bottom grandpa but I wanted to make a point. Force them to remember for all time that they had to come crawling on hands and knees to me after kicking me out due to the ranting from a bunch of wazzok Witchhunters; while saying I would never be anything more than a washed up wattock street rat."
-All the dwarfs listening give vaguely approving grumbles at a well thought-out vengeance.-

Oh I completely agree on all counts.

The steam gun would also be pretty useful in confined areas like sewers and underground tunnels. I could see more radical Dwarfs liking it as a cheaper alternative to their Drakeguns, since iirc they're so hot that the Dwarfs that wield them need specially enchanted armor to use them safely.

The main problem would be creating a steam generator compact and powerful enough to fuel said pseudo-flame thrower. Because it would need to generate a lot of high-pressure/temperature steam even if it didn't need to produce a lot of horsepower.

Very true. I highly doubt a single person could carry both the generator and gun for the first few versions. The generator would probably need to be on its own carriage pulled behind the gun part.

That or you have one central generator on a cart etc that makes the steam while the gunners have accumulators similar to air tanks for divers. Good for X number of bursts before they fall back to grab a new tank and plug the old one into the generator.

Having thought on this idea some more, it could be great for a wider array of steam-powered personal weapons than just the steam guns. I could see steam rifles and pistols working well with smaller versions of the same accumulators, ideally capable of refilling from the same generator to simply logistics. Soldiers could carry several of the smaller ones that they swap out as each runs out in combat, then go and refill during a lull.
