Make Believe. Such a powerful game. With it children and the occasional adult could be anything they wanted to be and go anywhere they wanted to go. Most importantly it kept children occupied while the adults were busy with their boring responsibilities.

Of coarse this was before the days of the much more convenient Smart Phone and Tablet which drain children of their capacity to distract at an almost alarming rate. At the small small cost of removing their need to imagine.

Thankfully you were born before all that.(Though not by much.) And your parents didn't believe in giving such things to small children. They really loved their baby:

Four years is a long time.

You and Hazel were drawn to the classics. The fables. The epic quests, the ancient evils, and the heroic knight rescuing their prince(ss).

Of course many outsiders observing the apparent boy/girl pair would assume the boy wanted to be the Knight and the girl the Princess. However this was not the case with the two of you. As is often the case in Make Believe, there was more going on than meets the eye.

No matter the characters you played, no story could be told without a setting. At first the two of you journeyed through ambiguous landscapes and unnamed kingdoms, but one day you began to establish a world. Built one bit at a time, you eventually called this world:

That castle was probably not the most secure, come to think of it. Given how many times you were kidnapped from it over the course of your and Hazel's time there.

But all good things must come to an end. Eventually you got too old for Make Believe. At least that's what you said. Hazel didn't agree. You keep thinking that maybe if you'd kept playing a little longer, kept letting yourself be rescued, things would have been different. It's not as though you didn't want to stay there, but you were growing up, life was losing its luster, and the cruelty of your peers was beginning to make itself sharper. Maybe if you'd had a chance you could have stayed close, maybe she would have grown out of it too.

As time passed you eventually grew into a:
