    • Ack, sorry about the delay there! I got walloped by some stuff. I think there was a healthy amount of discussion, and it went to interesting places, so I'm going to open voting now.

    Bell is there for good reason. But then there's a mix of thosewho seem to be competent. And those who seem to be there for lack of anything else for them to do.

    Notably fleshrender I suspect. While he's strong. May actually be 'too violent' thus why he was placed at the back door to keep him there and away from anything actually important.

    I'm going to jump on the book bandwagon, because although I didn't want to ask for creature comforts, I think intellectual curiosity from the undead will be interesting enough to him that he won't take offense and might be willing to indulge it. Plus I'm eager to hear more of the large-scale worldbuilding, and I have no idea how we're supposed to hear that when we're stuck in the middle of a mud pit.

    In the long run, the necromancer seems like the only real source of information for miles in any direction, but pumping him for intel is going to be a more delicate, long-term thing I suspect. So if we can get an excuse to see him again someday, that's more than enough for a first meeting. Returning the book makes for a solid reason.
     
    It only occured to me now, but maybe we could ask for a book about bog flora? See about foraging for spices.

    Then again, that would mean not learning about anything except the place we're already familar with. Hmm...
     
    [X] Tell him that it took you a while to settle in, but you've recently started to get along with some of your fellow wights, which has helped you to fit in. You've been trying to help the others with their food, but there's only so much you can do with a dwindling amount of spices and no proper kitchen, maybe he can help there?

    I'm going to make a suggestion and try to give some advice.

    But when asking for things, one method to get people to agree to such, is to bring that discussion around to how it can be helpful for the other person.

    I like the current vote, of asking for spices and a proper kitchen to be able to cook more. But, it comes across as something selfish.

    We're assuming he's 'evil' but, even with ordinary people making an exchange is nearly always better received than asking for something.

    Essentially. Ask him if he'd like us to cook for him and offer to do so. As if we're cooking for him as well he'll be more likely to see it as beneficial and agree.

    I've also changed my own vote, from just asking to borrow a book. To explaining why we want it, that is so we can learn more and be more useful. As an example. :)

    Honestly, it seems to me that what she could use more than anything else is more food.

    There's way too much mention of how hungry she is all the time.

    Books are nice, but I concur with Enthusiast. Cooking is one of Ythona's only avenues of befriending the other Wights and I'd like to improve upon it by improving the kitchen and what she can actually cook with.

    That, and the meal scenes were great. I want more of them.
     
    Can I suggest we all approval vote for multiple options? I don't see any reasons we can't ask for cooking and the book.

    The question is framed very much like 'tell me of your secret desires, and I will make them come true so long as you serve me'.

    Ythona does not wish to be here, let alone talk with her 'master'. So if it is an honest want (and not just saying something for the sake of answering because we want to be left alone), it should be important enough to our character that she'd be willing to step over her reluctance. And there can only be so many of those things.

    Asking for a book is trying to contextualize her situation and reflect on her newfound place in the world.
    Asking for ingredients is trying to find acceptance among her new peers and preserve what remains of her humanity.

    Just found the quest and so far its great.

    I wonder if our "master" is the big bad of the world or just a random necromancer.

    A good way to make friends, or at least allies, is through their stomach. Plus better food seems like it may genuinely help Ythona grow stronger.

    Votes need to be at the start of a line for the vote tally program to read them, with no text before them.

    I don't think book learing really addresses Ythona's needs right now. She likes cooking, and she lacks friends. Better cooking supplies would make her happier and healthier, and help her make more allies and friends. Books are good in a generic way, but in her current situation of being basically a watchguard away from nearly any kind of civilization, it'll be really hard to make use of any book learning. The most it might do is endear Ythona to the necromancer somewhat, maybe.
