Finding the Spark (Pathfinder 1E Quest)

I don't think we should try to trick the Morlocks. We don't have the necessary skills or spells to pull that off against these bugnuts crazy bastards. As Kori's internal monologue confirms, Morlocks are just incredibly unpleasant people, as the lore link details.

Seems like our best bet is to pull off a good ambush that reduces their numbers right from the get go. If Mina's Hex lands and the Morlock falls, everyone's combined ranged attacks have a good chance to killing that one when fall damage is also taken into account.

2d6 falling damage + 1d6 (stonebow) + 1d6 (stonebow) + 1d6 (Sneak Attack) + 1d10+2 (heavy crossbow) would inflict of 25 damage, assuming everything hits.

[X] Surprise!
-[X] We'll lay in wait at a point Gorok believes most conducive to a successful ambush. We've got time to find the perfect spot and we're familiar with the route behind us.
-[X] Kori will use his Cloak of Darkness to increase his AC and Stealth. Immediately before the ambush, he'll cast Guidance on everyone to boost their initial attack rolls. He'll cast Protection from Evil on Gorok and Divine Favor on himself, saving the rest of his spells for healing.
-[X] Gorok will signal Mina which Morlock to target with her Slumber Hex. Regardless of whether the Hex is successful, Gorok and Cob will attack that same Morlock using stonebows (Cob using a ranged Sneak Attack if he can position himself properly) while Kori uses the heavy crossbow to attack it.
-[X] In the following round, Mina will target the Morlock closest to one of the party members while Cob moves to finish off the injured Morlock. If Mina's Hex is successful, Gorok and Kori will both move to engage the un-Hexed Morlock in melee, or more likely respond to the Morlocks rushing to engage them. If her Hex does not succeed, Gorok will instead attack that Morlock. If the first Morlock doesn't survive the opening ambush, Cob will move to attack whichever Morlock is best positioned for a Sneak Attack. The group will try to avoid the large bug until the Morlocks are dealt with, as it seems to be slower either due to its nature or the cargo it is carrying.

The bug is slow. We are better off keeping pur distance and not letting it get to us. That way we just fight the morlocks. If we take one out in a surprise round, then the next one to fall to sleep can be coup de grace'd while we keep the other one busy

Good point. I've updated my plan to focus on the Morlocks while avoiding the bug until they're dealt with. Who knows, if we're successful without having to harm the bug we might get a cargo carrier out of the encounter.

[X] Goldfish

Sadly unlikely to talk through this considering race is some of worst in underdark. Best to take advantage of surprise.

I mean to be fair you can talk to Morlocks, I did not want to make it sound like Akorian thought it was entirely untenable, especially when you have approximately equal forces and they do not know if they could win a fight. It's just that when you meet Morlocks they usually have way more numbers because that is what they are good at.

Just watch, gonna end up killing decent morlocks who are delivering plague medicine or something.:p

There is an error in there, the Morlock should have been rolling +2 not +12 for perception, but I only caught that on his third roll, but I left the rolls in since it did not actually change the result.
Cob is so good that even sudden +10 perception boost did not help to reveal him! :V

With our diplomacy being shit, we should let them pass us by
That is why I do not like to play without diplomacy.

[X] Do not be a murderhobo
-[X] Find a spot where you will not attract attention and let the morlock group pass by
-[X] If the finding of you will be seemed imminent, cast Guidanse on yourself (and on others, if you have time), then Divine Favor on yourself and try to intimidate morlocks not to trouble you

I understand that morlocks are Chaotic Evil and extreemly unpleasant people, but this is not an exuse for the unprovoked. I do not want to regress ourselves on their level and become a bunch of murderhobos.

Their native perception is low enough that you have some shot at doing this. Someone would have to aid Mina with her stealth since she is the least skilled among the group in it, but otherwise Akorian, Cob and even Gorock have a good shot at managing it.

I hace a wild idea.

See, these guys must sleep. In shifts. That means that there are two sleeping per shift, and one lookout.

How many odds do we have of going with a full stealth mad dash to coup de grace both sleeping ones before the other can wake them up? We have the super stealthy tag team of Kori and Cob to do this.

The first problem with this is that we don't know their sleep cycle. If we were on the surface, this would be easier to guess at. For all we know, they might have another 12 or 15 hours of travel time before deciding to rest.

The second problem, and the biggest, IMO, is that the Morlocks are very soon going to reach the point in the tunnel where they won't be able to help but notice our scent trail. After that, they're either going to try to hunt us down, or at the very least be much more wary and that much difficult to ambush.

Allright

It was an idea at least.

…honestly, I didn't even think of just going to ground as an option, what with the presented actions being 'talk, fight'.

If it does go bad, then hopefully we can still use Goldfish's plan.

We should have bought the pickaxe. I am sure we could have done something interesting with it.

Not a lot of votes. I think I'll leave this up.

I just realized. Morlocks deal damage with weapons. That means that if they lose their weapons they don't deal much damage at all.

And they drop their held items when they are sleeping.

This is an advantage. Sleep also disarms them and forces to take a move action and eat AoO to pick back their weapons. Or simply try to bite. That doesn't deal much damage

Arc 1 Interlude 1: In Strange Company
In Strange Company

The Season of Still Stone

It was cold in the tunnel, though that was easier to endure on a full stomach than without.

Even if I'm traveling from danger into danger? Mina asked herself not for the first time, nor would it be the last. Unlike her new... friends, it sounded better to call them that in her head at least, the young woman was not used to violence. Oh she had seen it more times than she ever wanted to remember, but she had never turned a weapon on another living thing. Maybe if I had the guts to do it Pepper wouldn't have died, she thought, hand tightening instinctively against the rough leader of the dagger's hilt.

"I'd wager you wish you had another warrior right now and not just a girl who can sing a fair lullaby sometimes?" The words were meant in jest, but the humor did not make it past her lips.

"Wager what?" the lizard warrior hissed warily, keeping one eye on the tunnel.

"That's just a turn of phrase." If there is one thing Mina was not used to it was being misunderstood, misliked certainly, visitors to the temple who did not know of her would often make the Spiral of the Lady against haunts and hell-marks when they saw her, but she had never experienced her 'blessing' fail before as it did time and again with Gorok.

"Him not get tongue-twisting." A small clammy hand patted her awkwardly. It felt clammy and mishapen... and it felt like the most welcome thing in the world.

"It's easy to kill people, to break things," Akorian's voice came from somewhere in the mass of shadows to her left. "Tracking, sneaking, knowing the tunnels and that which lives in them, healing, but judging thoughts behind words rolled in sweet jelly, that is hard, uncommon, more likely to keep you alive in the long run."

"And yet we chose to fight." Mina tried not to sound resentful of the weight of her own fears.

"Morlocks are dangerous, almost as many of them as there are of us on a deserted path..." he shrugged, the silk of his scavenged armor rustling against the stone at his back.

"Is that why you decided to fight the slavers?" Mina asked, unsure if she wanted to know that her rescue owed so much to the constant paranoia of this dark and twisted place.

A laugh, surprisingly youthful sounding voice bounced against the stone. "No, I wanted to rob them so I'd have more than a few coins starting out. Turns out I got far more out of the deal than what they were carrying in their bags."

That sounded... startlingly forthright.

Mina did not know how to feel about how the best thing that had happened to her in months, probably saving her life if not her soul, was an act of highway robbery without the highway. Desna was a forgiving goddess, she reminded herself. She knew the harshness of the roads, even in this lightless place far from the light of the stars. The young woman nodded and inclined her head in a whispered prayer to Lady Luck, whose aid they would no doubt shortly need: "Hail Bright Maiden of quicksilver delight, shine upon me. Thy morning blessing, which, like the new dawn, refreshes my Spirit and lifts my heart with song. Blessed Be. Grant thou safe journey on the road and thy luck be with thee."

No butterfly floated down the long silent tunnel, no sudden burst of insight flashed through her mind, but Mina felt a little more at peace for the company she had fallen into.
