TreeQuest: Magitech (Riot Quest)

[X][Action] Store Resources Against Future Need

[X][AutoFocus] Any

I meant to do a lot more and a lot sooner, but life and all that.

@Robinton you're good for using my omake bonus for the Fire Learning action, I'll just need to think up a Fire omake for the Ice Learning action.

@Nigerian Duck it's time to vote :V

[X] Store Resources Against Future Need
[X] Research Vine Shield-Piercing (Magic Research)
    [X] Empty Veil (Void)
    [X] Raise the Shield
[X] Store various kinds of Nuts for future needs
[X] Try to design a Tree using Light/Darkness Negacion to turn the surrounding darkness into light, ideally as a source of light for a nearby Lens Tree. (Write-in)
    [X] Upgrade Lens Tree
    [X] Fuego! Pyrofuego! Burn!
[X] Attempt to strengthen friendship with and learn more about Marta Yarrow the Herbalist by offering to serve as assistant for the project she's working on.
-[X] Why of course this isn't also a means to secretly gain insight into if there might be some mystery motive that might be driving her and otherwise spy on her out in the open. I have no idea what you're talking about! Why would you ever think such a thing?
[X] Investigate the Shadow Spinner Colony, and in particular how the mental attack happened. I definitely want to Connect them to the Forest but I'd prefer it if I can avoid getting my 'head' bashed in in the process. Either physically, in whatever form that manifests for a thinking tree, or mentally.
[X] Mining Mushrooms Manifold: grow the mining portion of the fungal network and infrastructure for separating out samples of any interesting minerals that it might find for the researches to poke at.
[X] Analyze Mundane Movement (Biology Research) (Movement Research)
    [X] Widen the Cave Entrance
[X] Reach Out to Minds (Psychic) (Talanburg)
[X] Connect to Local Wildlife (Psychic) (Void Animals)
[X] Joint the Unpredictable tree on the quest for more Ant knowledge. After all, different patterns of thing and the road not taken and all that. Bring food and books and stuff. Also Squirrels and some Corvids and more Ants. This can't possibly go wrong.
-[X] If @Phigment decides not to get more Ant knowledge, join death bear in learning the sacred art of killing things with the power of your mind. If we end up fighting the lumberjacks, remember to thank them for volunteering to give up their lives for science.
    [X] Experiment with rocket-propelled flight
[X] Combine the light bending materials from lens trees with unusual lumber to create ornamental unusual lumber. Magics to consider: Light(/Darkness negacion) + Illusion for beautiful light play
    [X] Incorporate Plant Dandelions
[X] Study on Light Magic; specifically, how to our Fire Magic into our Laser Beam. If our Laser Beam can set things on fire, shouldn't it be possible to add a fire aspect to it for additional firepower (heh)? And if THAT works... let's see what happens if you add Fire/Ice Negacion to it, too! Or Fire Within.
-[X] Destructive testing on any applicable hostile targets, starting from non-lethal attacks meant to deter if it were the other Two-Legs, to outright vaporising sum bitches if they fucked around too much.
[X] Try to open a portal to the Mad Science Tree's location, to help it get here faster.
[X] Analyze Mundane Movement. Also on top of analyzing, use some magic to try hydraulic and other similar things that animals use to move, emulating muscle from the form and down to the method basically.
[X] Release Annoying Pollen against the Lumburglars
    [X] Try to re-Connect with the Ant-finding expedition. (Write-in)
[X] Flesh, Not of My Flesh (Magic Biology Research)
[X] Test the possibility of countering illusions. Try using light and dark negation as a starting point.
[X] Monster Energy (Magic Biology Research) (Biology Research) (Magic) (Magic Research)
[X] Practice telekinesis further. If the lumberjacks are handled peacefully, quarry more heavy limestone. If violently, practice precision and multi-tasking by telekinetically robbing them of every piece of gear possible, down to and including clothing, carts and horses.
    [X] Rain and Shine
[X] RIP AND TEAR, SORD GUD EDITION (Offensive)

Thank you both for the notice. Indeed, the time is now for the Shenanigans!

[X][Action] Blast it! The tree's efforts have been for naught, barely even scratching the surface of what he could possibly do. No leads on how to interact with it, no methodical approach to investigating it, and no confirmation on if it's even real or not. Even so...the SOUL must be there! There has to be a force beyond the body that controls it--otherwise how else would the concept arise? Struggling with as much as he can, the tree empties out his mind, and then branches it out into his very being, try to become 'aware' of what is his own Soul.

Have you considered just going and standing by the Sensing Tree and asking what it sees?

I seem to recall that it can sense souls. Seems easier than emptying out your whole mind

So I get the impression that we're continuing to have issue getting the votes necessary to achieve specific things with our animals, I think it may be worth considering trying to strengthen the bonds we have with those animals in order to reduce the amount of votes required to make voting actually mean something.

Especially given the number of people who just stick to one or two votes and ignore everything else.

The passive bonuses of most connected creatures are fine, IMO.

Last time I tried collaborating with another tree…well, you know how the story goes.
Besides, it looks a little cooler if I pave my own way and stuff. Like how I study with alternative methods compared to the Life and biology lessons that were taught (eating animals).

Ah, sorry. I appear to be one of those. I really don't understand much outside my given field of fashionably-late crackpot tree, so I stick to what I know in hopes of not messing anyone else up.

I, to the contrary, think we should foster more independence in our creatures. The Forest is much too scatterbrained to run the burgeoning sapient animal society all the time.

What about making our forest into a forestcity? We get fleshies to fertilize us and let us study them more closely (with consent of course) and they get shelter and food from our fruits!

I'll try to reply to the thread before long, but to summarize my plans:
  1. Write up a mini-turn, with the results of the Lumburglars fight. This will also include an additional vote-choice at the end.
  2. Get the next Dubiously Intelligent Design turn done.
  3. Write the next turn (or possibly mini-turn) for TreeQuest.
Voting for the next full turn of TreeQuest is currently open and will remain open until I end the voting for that (either just before or just after step 3 of the previous). Voting for the mini-turn, on the other hand, is very much closed.

Sounds good to me. And I'll finally get my upgrade after all this ti— wait…what will my tree be called?! I've got to figure out a name, quickly! Something that's really impactful, and sets me apart. Like…the Magic Tree.

@Robinton I think I vaguely remember you saying somewhere that if we ever edited our votes after the vote has been counted you should be informed? I forgot to put in my focus before the vote closed, and I just added it.

I have performed the rolls, and I present to you, Forest, an ethical conundrum with no right answer (and thankfully no wrong answer either).

Do you save the Lumburglars?

Specifically, they were hot on your metaphorical trail for a bit, then rolled a pair of 5%-worst-case rolls for "continue to follow trail" and "survival." In practical terms, they decided to blunder off towards the Shadow-Spinner colony, and (if you don't intervene) will probably mostly die in a day or so.

(Well, they'll start to die in a day or so - the (only) nice thing about Shadow Spinners is that it doesn't hurt to get eaten by one, since you're convinced that everything is fine and all.)

Some additional information, that you've gotten from observing them:
  • The Stealthy-gal has a limited ability to hide her thoughts from you, but it mostly broke down as they all got close.
    • Her plan for life is, in essence, to make a lot of money quickly then retire to the Larongo League.
    • She's planning to do this by getting paid by anyone who will hire her - most specifically, she's currently being paid by the Woo Clan to cause problems locally (and this is part of that).
    • She's also been approached by a shadowy unnamed organization that has "a fang crossed with an enchanted axe" as their symbol. They are offering payment for "whatever she learns" from this venture, but cash on delivery (of information). They seem interested in the enchanted lumber, and nothing else.
    • "Hide her thoughts from you" - it seems like a general-purpose mind-block, and it seems to be part of her overall Stealth(?) element.
  • Three of the others are mostly decent people, and have families that would miss them.
    • One of those really does need the money, due to a child with a rare hard-to-heal disease.
    • One of those needs the money due to personal wastefulness, but might have learned his lesson.
    • One of those is bored (and despairing of purpose in life) to the point of taking a (low!) crime job just to pass the time. (Theft only.)
  • One of the others is a rather terrible person, and has a family that might prefer he didn't come back.
  • None of the others have (discernible) ties to conspiracies or other such things.
  • Feel free to ask other questions, and I'll tell you the answer (or that you don't know).

[ ][Save the Lumburglars] Write-in

(All other votes - except the initial Lumburglar approach - are still open. This post will be un-threadmarked once the full mini-turn is complete.)

If they die, it'll be the Shadow Spinners eating them, not you.

Anyhow.... Hmmm... while tempting to let them get what's coming to them, I'd probably lean more towards at least directing them to just wander off and get lost somewhere a bit safer. Or maybe make a production of it. They can't tell other would-be thieves to stay away if they're all dead.

[X][Save the Lumburglars] Stick a blatant illusionary danger sign in their path.

DO NOT FEED WILD MONSTERS

If they ignore that, it's on their head.

There's got to be bones left over. Surely these rotating shadows don't eat everything, do they?

[Maybe?][Save the Lumur] Show them a safe and happy path straight to the mouth of that tree.

I've updated the prior post with additional information - you got a lot out of them while they were nearby and trying to find the Forest.

Can you clarify how this vote works given the write-in option?
Come up with a suggestion for the response, and one of two things will happen:
  1. Others will agree and your solution will get a good many votes.
  2. I'll lump together several similar votes into something that fulfills the spirit of all of them, if not the exact wording.
