What kinda worries me is that this favor is unspecified, though I doubt that the recruitment strategy is first hunt down demon enemies of all and then straight up murder.
I want to point out that we've been given 3 opportunities to not get involved further with the Ghost/Empire: learning the Devouring Crucible Art; asking the Ghost about crafting a pill from the demon core; and now, picking a Qi art in exchange for doing some unspecified favor. After this, I really don't think it will be this simple to easily walk away from the Ghost's offers.
Look at what he's done this past update; he took us directly to the inner sect, deliberately tying us to him and the Empire in the eyes of our seniors. Everything he does has helped us get stronger, but it's also served to isolate us from our peers. This trend will continue; the favor he asks of us isn't gonna be as wholesome as killing a demon.
By the time we're asked to do something bad enough that most of us think it isn't worth the rewards, leaving will be a lot messier than it is now. We should take our current level of Devouring Crucible and the demon pill and get out while we still can.
[X] You won't take anymore of The Ghost's help, these favours he mentions leave you with an odd taste in your mouth.
yeah, on second thought all he has done so far is comparitively small. He just gave us a cycling technique that we havent even used that much and can easily switch to the sect style, gave us a dangerous but socially acceptable mission and gave us a cultivation pill that while exotic will probably have no lasting impressions on our cultivation.
if we take a tech from him that changes. We now have access to a ghost technique that we will have for the rest of our lives. The more he pulls us in, the more of how ghosts function we will know and the harder itll be to get out.
more than that though is how he treats the people around him and how others treat him and by extension us. He pushes people around and throws his political weight in peoples faces at the drop of a hat. He acts like a bully and he doesnt treat others with respect. Its not hard to see why the sect doesnt like him and they probably have reasons beyond his poor attitude as well.
I dont want lind to be like that.
the heartbeat power is cool, but id rather be chill sect hunter boy lind than loner pariah demon hunter lind. Getting more involved with the ghost will just make the plot even more focused on the ghosts and the rejection lind faces by being associated with him than it already is.
Also the tech types. Im on board for going with the sect specialty for once. Water lind is cool and id like to go on an adventure with our ship bros again sometime.
Mhm, let the greed flow, decisions will be made and we'll look back on them in the future for better or worse for judgement.
Yet the same can be asked of the people who almost got destroyed by the demon king and did not unite in the face of it because of past grudges, if you chose to be divided and aniahlated in the face of the demon king, maybe the empire is right to spit in your face for your previous bullshit since they were the one's who dealth the killing blow to it while others fooled around with their independance.
Even if were isolated from sect loyalists if we do well perhaps we can form our own small group of imperial loyalist within the sect, alone no longer would be cool. He showed of in the sect by rewarding us, i'm sure they'd want more imperial loyalists.
Lose everything? What? All we lose is a cycling tech we havent even leveled and we can easily learn the sects cycling technique. Also we gain back the respect of the sect and stop our backslide into being our years biggest pariah.
Well the dude is obviously an ass and people really dont like him, probably for a reason. It would probably be worth investigating why people dont like the ghosts but there are enough red flags here that i dont think its worth taking him up on his offer as it is. There are other paths to power.

we don't lose it in a literal sense, but its a core that is built for people who hunt and eat demon cores. if we stop going the path of a ghost, then it would be better to grab a cycling tech more focused for whatever else we want to do than to keep pursuing a cycling tech thats core principle no longer really applies to us.
Breathing Styles: Devouring Crucible Style:
+2 Cycling Skill!
+25% Effectiveness of Pills, Elixirs, and Immortal Chef Cuisine!
+1 Strength/Will for each Stage of the Consecration Stage! (Benefits for future stages currently locked)
+???
It looks like we've got full effectiveness for all the Consecration stages, then after that we'd need the Ghost's help to progress. If we reject his offer now, the best way forward would probably be to finish fully consecrating with the Crucible, then find a better breathing style we can progress with when we enter the sect proper (maybe water-based?).
"The Monkey saw fit to let me know of your progress last night over drinks." The Ghost tells you, disdain dripping from his words as he references the figure you encountered yesterday. "I believe he was happier for me to spend time on your training, rather than looking into the inner workings of his sect."
If the Ghost spending time training Lind means that he has less time to examine the inner workings of the Sect, then the Ghost is on a time limit here.
This would mean that the Ghost will be leaving soonish.
And that would mean that future training seems unlikely. Therefore, it may be wrong to assume that instruction from the Ghost is needed for Devouring Crucible after Consecration.
It may just be that the effects are hidden until we reach a future stage, not that we need training to unlock them.
The empire took control over the Kingdom after being instrumental in defeating the Black Demon King, so there are some bad feelings there. For some reason I thought it happened ages ago, but it was just twenty years ago or so:
Senior Tao adopts a more serious pose. "Demons are, by our understanding, evil beings. They are, in general, cruel, greedy and selfish. They delight in the infliction of pain and suffering. Many of your parents may have fought in the war against the Black Demon King. But - and this is my belief, and others disagree - they are as much a part of the natural order of things as you and I."
So yeah, it's very much a recent thing. Would the former king/queen rule any better though, hard to say...
I suppose some might want to turn Lind into a double agent of sorts, though that's probably further down the line as any newbie cultivator would not have a chance in hell lying to one of the Ghosts.

Hmm. well we'd still be able to use pills and elixirs based on demon cores. It seems like eating demon cores could actually grant the user Qi techniques instead:
The Ghost looks at the shard, holding it up to the light. "Is there a reason you didn't swallow it when you had the chance?"
"I believed the pills would be better for my cultivation."
The Ghost gives a non-committal hum at your answer. "I remember devouring my first the second it fell into my palm. Still, if cultivation is your primary concern, then you made the correct decision. If you know a pill maker that can work with demonic materials that is."
Eating the core is not mainly used for cultivation, I suppose it could grant stats instead of Qi techniques though. Kinda makes sense that eating the core could give techniques given the sinister feel of some of the techs that Lind was offered. So if we feel that we don't want any kind of sinister techs we'd just get pills from any demon cores.

Yeah, could be that it'll be unlocked by simply finishing Consecration stage. It'd be strange if the Ghost doesn't tell Lind how to unlock the benefit for the next phase of cultivation, if needed, since that'd make Lind search out an alternative cycling style after all.
We might want to investigate other cycling techniques anyway to see what other benefits there are. Lind has a water affinity in a sect that's noted for having the greatest water cultivators in the entire Empire. Could be that the Crucible is just plain better despite not giving an affinity. The Golden Reed would give a minor affinity + other things, I suppose Lind would get a 1.2 multiplier to cycling water instead of a 1.1. Dunno how that compares to having +2 cycling skill number wise.
A/N: Sorry for the delay, both Kreen and Myself have been run off our feet with work. To compensate for our absence, here's a piece of art made by the ever amazing @Wistways capturing Lind.
While she does her own art and you could get in touch and ask for a commission, she's also a great writer who's recently started her own quest so check this out.
Now for the Update.
The shard that the Ghost offers you seems to thrum in your hand. You can feel it, on the bare edge of your consciousness. A steady pulse, like a heartbeat, going just a bit too fast. You clench it in your fist and the shard crumbles into dust, slipping out the sides of your fingers, blowing onto the floor of Seri's workshop as the knowledge inside now thrums at the back of your mind, memories you've never had before, but can call upon to master the rhythm.
When your eyes flicker up, the Ghost is gone.
You never saw him move.
Perhaps you will learn to do that, one day.
Silent Rhythm gained! Progress 0/20!
With the Ghost gone, there is little left for you to do but wait. Seri, becomes distinctly less interested in you after the Ghost's departure. Attending to his own business with no effort to draw you into conversation. After the cauldron lets out a final puff of foul-smelling steam, The Senior Naga deposits two orbs in your hand, the color of dried blood. They have an inner warmth that does not seem to come from the pill furnace and are disturbingly pliant and glossy to the touch.
"Thank you, Senior." You say, bowing deeply.
"Find me the next time you hunt a demon." The Naga sniffs, "Until next time, Initiate."
He returns to his work, and you are summarily dismissed.
Two Rank 2 Pills – The Infernal Grasp x2 gained! - Blood/Fire Qi! Each adds 13 Successes to Cultivation!
10 Normally, but the Effects of the Crucible have already been applied
It is not the shard, or the pills, that weigh you down as you depart this part of the sect compound. Rather, it is the feeling of the Ghost's eyes upon you, and the way he spoke of favours. A weight which you hurry to carry with you once you leave your own muddled thoughts and see the stares of the Inner Sect members.
You remember that you are not meant to be here.
By the time you make it to the safety of the Town it is nightfall. You arrive to an empty home and a myriad of thoughts to keep you up as you stare at the ceiling of your room in the inky blackness of night.

The next day, your questing along the water's edge takes you deep into the sect, following the current of the qi-rich liquid across the landscape. Your eyes are taken in as always by the richness of the life in sect - fat birds fly overhead in flocks, you walk around vibrantly colored serpents perched upon rocks, seeking the warmth of the sun as sleek, shiny fish swim past you in the waters of the river.
The water is the home of Qi in this sect, surely by following the rivers flow you will find something which you can use. A spot to claim your own. You trudge along stone and sand, next to the rivers shore. Shifting waters in the river make you take a step or two back every so often, hand reaching for your bow and arrow but whatever creatures lurk beneath often retreat once you are far enough away from the waters edge.
While hunting its important to keep track of where you're going, but your mind seems to wander as you in wander downwards.
Come tomorrow there will be a week left in the sect, one last chance to grab the last token. Will you make it?
Will Medhi and Bai Ping? What awaits you once you enter? You remember the initiates in the river, playing their games, sparring and cultivating in equal measure. Those others leaving the compound to do their own tasks or attend their own cultivation.
How free will you be? What work and demands will be expected of you?
You almost miss it amid your wanderings, but your attention is caught by something unusual. A channel seems to have been cut in the riverbank, sending off a stream of water away from the main flow. Manmade, the sort of channel you would see on a farm, where the river flows to the soil.
You decide to follow it. At worst, it might lead to some farmer's fields. At best… who knows?
As you walk alongside the channel, your feet leave stone and sand, and find their footing on a path inlaid with porcelain. White tiles beat a path separating man and nature. The water of the river loses its colour as you continue down. It goes from a deep and lustrous blue, becoming paler and paler as the roaring of a waterfall becomes louder and louder. You walk alongside a river of white, mist swirling around you, drenching your furs.
"Welcome to the Falling Purity."
A masculine voice reaches out to you and find a man sitting cross legged before the waterfall. He sits atop a stone, encircled by the water which trickles back down the path you've walked. Tattoos run down his back and arms, his robe tied into a knot around his waist, he maintains his focus and the same breathing pattern you were taught on your arrival to the sect.
The one you've since discarded.
"What is this place Senior Brother?" You ask as the both of you watch the water fall off the edge of the world and crash into the river in front of you. Unbridled power of nature, one which puts the beasts of the sea and land you've seen since you joined this sect.
"A place for renewal, for rejuvenation." He tells you as he stops his cycling and turns around the stone, corded arms resting atop his knees.
The man has a shaved head, though starting to sprout hair once more, and wild auburn eyes still ablaze with the power of Qi. His clothes drip with water, sodden from the hours spent cycling. He looks at you with an inquisitive gaze, turning his head slightly as he says.
"You do not breathe the way we do, Initiate. Were you taught by another?"
"Yes, Senior. I have been trained in another pattern."
"A story for another time then," the man tells you as he rises to his feet and gracefully leaps off the stone, now looming above you. "While you are fortunate to find the Falling Purity this early in your journey, I would advise against cycling it for today."
Disappointment hardens your voice. "May I ask why?"
A quiet chuckle eases its way out of him as he puts his hands on his hips.
"Cultivation is the Art of Defiance, Junior. It is good to ask questions, lest you become blinded by ignorance."
He gestures to the white water beside the both of you. "Let us have a lesson. Have you considered why the water has changed colour?"
Your first thought is the foam that bubbles at the bottom of the waterfall, but that doesn't explain the white water which flows further down the path. You go to reach out with your senses but a clap of his hands stops you.
"I said no cycling Junior, I won't have cheating!" He chides you. "Guess."
Your eyes drift past him to the waterfall, the pure white of the water.
Pure.
The Falling Purity.
"Is it devoid of Qi? Senior?" You ask but hold up your hand right as he goes to answer you.
No you can sense the Qi, even if you can't cycle it.
"Rather, is it devoid of aspects?" You ask, reconsidering your answer and his smile brightens.
"Well done, Initiate. The Falling Purity is pure Qi, untainted, unaspected, while it can drive the fruit of your cultivation, it can also remove your aspects. A boon for cultivators who wish to change their path, yet without first going down a path, its effects serve little purpose for one such as you."
"To consecrate is to forge your path, to embrace the Falling Purity is to remove the stray branches from your path to pursue perfection. Forge your path first initiate, and then return."
With that, the Senior returns to his stone and drops deep into cultivation, you watch him for a few moments, before you turn back on the path you've walked.

Special Events
Nothing Happening this Week, the city and sect are eagerly awaiting the end of the Trials.
A cycling roll should be 3 (Spiritual Prowess) + 3 (Cycling) +2 (Mud Pots) = 8d10 x4
So a mean of 16 successes per action. We are currently at 15/30.
Therefore a single action at the Mud Pots with one of the Pills should guarantee achieving Mid Consecration. (Only ~50% if we don't use a pill, which would be silly.)
The next step of Consecration seems likely to require either another 45 or 60 successes. So to go up two stages we'd need either 60 or 75 successes total.
If it is the higher target, we have a ~50% chance of achieving that with 3 cycling actions and both pills.
I'm tempted to try for two breakthroughs in one plan, but I'm not sure if that is actually safe. Might be better to go with one action + one pill this plan, and if that is not enough we can dump everything into cultivation for the last three days.

I don't see why it wouldn't be safe. He was not injured the last time he broke through and if there is some kind of damage it will likely be on breaking through the final Consecration step.
