You stare at the core in your hands, the miasma rolling through your fingers, wrapping around them like tendrils as it tries to keep its shape together and stop itself from falling to the floor. Instinctively, you're drawn to it, canines bared, drool slipping down your chin. Each second you wait the miasma hardens, thickens, your time slowly fading.
You need to decide.
Eventually, the core forms into a solid obsidian shard, pulsing with purple veins as you slip it into your coat and the opportunity fades away and so does your hunger.
"Do you know what you'll be doing with it?" Bai Ping asks as you crouch down to remove your knife from the now decaying Demon's flesh.
"Not yet," You admit with a grunt as you tear the knife out of the corpse, noting that not all the Demon seems to be leaving this mortal plane, and you beckon Ping over to take a look. "The Ghost suggested that I return to him once I'd hunted the demon, I might make his acquaintance again soon."
Bai Ping's expression assumes its unreadable mask once more at that, but he relents after a moment. The bard squats down next to you, picking up one of the demons' claws, holding it up against the sunlight. "Not all the demon leaves once it's been vanquished, some of the parts, alongside the core linger. People can pay a pretty silver for them as crafting materials, or trinkets." He takes three of them, leaving the other two to you, perhaps more than fair given that he's also let you take the core.
Materials Gained
Demon Talons (Fire/Demon Qi) x 2
"Lind," He says as you pocket the claws as well. "Be mindful of getting too involved with The Ghost."

"He's the only person at the sect who knows how to use the cycling technique he's given me." You grunt dismissively as you feel the warmth of the core brush against your chest, though you try to reassure him. "I doubt he's going to harm me a few weeks after helping."
Bai Ping falls silent at your words as you look to see the last few wisps of the hand fade away, the area around it still poisoned by its blight, but hopefully not one which will last long with its absence.
"Good work, both of you."
The two of you look up in the direction of the new voice to see a monkey hanging from a tree, his tail curled around it. No, you realize, not a monkey, but a man with a tail and tufts of fur on his arms. Sideburns frame his wrinkled face and a battered a hat hangs from his head. As he hangs upside down and the pair of you watch as he claps excitedly before swinging from the branch and landing in front of you. As he walks forward you recognise the clothes of the sect, the clothes you have yet to wear in exchange for your familiar garb.
"I know Master Zhen and Shao Suyin said to expect the both of you to be in the process of accomplishing a task. But such courage!" The monkey crows excitedly, his tail wiggling behind him as he beams at you both. Suddenly he is in between you both, circling Bai Ping and you like he is inspecting a particularly interesting specimen. "Yes! A wonderful pair of initiates the two of you might make."
Bai Ping holds stock still as he picks up on the Monkey's speech before you as he launches himself into a swift bow. "Your words are far too kind, honored Elder. We simply did what we felt was right."
Then the strange monkey-man is in front of you. You meet his gaze, and your spiritual senses extend by instinct. In a breath, you find… it is as if you are at the base of a mountain, looking up. And the top is shrouded by the clouds.
The Monkey hums in response to Bai Pings words, thought with an amused glance in your direction he says. "Though perhaps one of you was more motivated than the other."
Is he aware of your deal with The Ghost? Your cycling of course, was no real secret, having spread like gospel around the town, though you thought the words you had exchanged as he assigned you this task had been more hidden that you realise.
The Monkey clasps you both on the shoulder. "Good work, the both of you. Dedicate yourself to your paths and push forward."
With that he walks between both of you and leaps towards the mountains, soaring into the air with a single bound. Disappearing in seconds. You glance at Bai Ping and hold your gaze as you realise that his pendant is out of his robes, and a token has been placed. You reach for your own and find it outside your clothes, one half now filled.
You look at a token of white wood, filling half of the pendant, on it a blooming flower pulsates softly.
"Pure of spirit." Bai Ping says as he stares at his own in wonder.
Pure of spirit, the drive to do good for the community, for others. The Hand and the demon it came from had attacked the town and hurt those you know. Together, you had overcome your fear the night you saw it and Bai Ping had faced demons of his own as he aided you. The two of you proving your worth as cultivators, and as people.
The two of you wander back to the town, tired, hurt, but brimming with confidence as you know you're halfway to earning your place in this sect.
