Buffy the Vampire Slayer Take Two

Keep in mind at this point in time the Scoobys are low magic. There's Ms Calendar, and she is teaching Amy, but even Giles doesn't really use magic at this point. It'll take time for them to start getting more complex workings

Did Xander notice any Art of a Clawed Gauntlet while helping with the Moloch Scanning?

The Glove of Myghennon could be super useful to the Scoobies....

There was a scene in S4 I think where Xander cast a Fire Spell just by saying it out loud.... So he has Magic Potential, but did not pursue it in Canon due to Willow laying claim to it in S2, as well as because of his dislike of studying....

So I think maybe we could nudge Xander to learn Magic with Amy, learn that he do well with "Battle Magic", but not the R&D or Theoretical stuff.

I kind of view Amy in S1 as a Hybrid of a Cleric and Warlock, a "Theurge" as most of her Magic was invoking Deities like Hecate and Diana.

Willow in S2 was more of a Wizard/Ritualist.

So I think Xander would be an Elementals the, Paladin, Spellblade or something that allows Melee and Spells, maybe a Celestial Warlock or Eldritch Knight if he is willing to make a deal with something less sketchy than Demons?

Could maybe go into Shaman or Druid if he follows upon the Hyena Spirit?

Might be easier just to buy a phone, if we have any way at all of getting a small sum together. A part time job would probably be enough?

Walkie Talkies would likely be easier to get a hold of, but any Ranged Comms would be useless in the Sewers or Caverns under Sunnydale.

Walkie Talkies (and I'm running off memory and may well be very wrong) seem to have limited range.

Even today they have terrible sound quality and might be risky for people trying to be stealthy

This article on pagers gives a quick overview on two-way pagers. (Link to a marginally more techincal article about one way pagers at the bottom of the one I linked)

The History of the Two-Way Pager

Pagers were popular in the 90s, but was it possible not only to receive but also to send messages? Let’s figure it out.

Your point about signal is a good one (and would sunnydale even have a pager signal tower?), but they're better than nothing for letting people to know [emergency, come to phone/try to call me].

(Also, note that pagers are inherently very insecure/open communication tech)

Also, the year is relevant, as two way pagers are orders of magnitute more useful as someone can confirm recipt.

Buffy fandom wiki states season one takes place in 1996, so maybe a sending pager and a reciving pager might be needed.

Oh definitely! Even Mil Spec Walkie Talkies and Headsets etc have their issues.

Pagers should be doable for basics and there would definitely be coverage as they were used extensively by Medicsl Professionals at the time.

If used by the Scoobies they would be limited to above ground and would likely need to be in code for basic deniability and obfuscation at the very least.

Eg;

Bakesale = Meet Up

Girlscouts at the Door = Vamps Attacking

Lmao

As long as we can have one of the charcters go into a nerd-spy daydream about their use and dangers, I think most risk can be avoided -

Have them turned off/on silent/no flashing lights when patrolling or hiding. (No one wants their position given away)

Assume that anyone can see what you are sending and recording it at all times. (As information security is impossible, only communicate information that is not secret i.e. "call me" or is only relevant in the short term "call me, emergency". Use basic codebook. (As that feels fun) and good point about deniabilty. Never use words relating to fighting or anything that is socially frowned upon, never mind illigal.)

Make sure you have a way to confirm message received (Knowing if your message for help or backup has been seen is vital for making plans in the moment)

Normally I prefer to minimize OOC knowledge, but I think at this point it's important for you to know and keep in mind.

Xander is Chaos Aligned. He's someone that exists where he shouldn't be, and tangles up What Will Be. He breaks Destiny's lines and makes things messy. Things tend to react unpredictably with him.

This can be a boon or a curse. It means he thinks outside the box and sees things others don't. It also means he looks like and often is vulnerable to predators, as he is not a Hero. Keep this in mind when making plans for him

Witch Hunt
You didn't waste time getting to Giles and telling him what you'd found. He followed you back and looked over the shrine that had been constructed. "Oh dear."

"Is Amy's mom back in business? Gonna witch things up again?" you asked nervously.

"No, n-not yet at least." Giles wiped his glasses. "She can't access her magic directly."

"So what is it?"

"A calling card for a demon, open ended. You don't need magic to cast such a ritual. You would build the shrine as such, light the candle, and-and any demons interested in doing business with you could answer."

"So she's making a deal to get her magic back."

"I'm afraid so."

You frowned. "You think she'll try to swap bodies with Amy again?"

"Possibly. Or the poor girl could be the price for her mother to regain her magic."

"Great. How do we find them?"

Giles being able to tell him what was going on helped. Getting an organized search party going helped even more. You partnered up with Willow while Buffy went hunting on her own and Giles researched what possible demons might turn up from the ritual. You ended up missing the big throw down, with Buffy taking out the demons and rescuing Amy, but she was back and safe.

Amy had expected no one to miss her. She was shaken as you all met back up at the library. It didn't help that the demon had taken out her mom for a power boost to try and fight Buffy. The only reason Amy had been spared was because it had still been hoping to take her for a bride. She was very quiet as things were wrapped up and she headed back to her apartment. You hoped she'd be alright now that her mother for sure couldn't come back again.

Oh, boy. At least Amy knows that people care enough to miss her?

I'm torn about what to vote for. There's too many interesting possibilities. Studying magic would let us spend time with Amy and hopefully give us an idea of how magic works. I don't think Xander actually practicing magic would work out so well, but it would be nice to know what our enemies and allies can do. Studying with Giles should give us a better idea about the supernatural in general, and one of Xander's biggest problems is how much he doesn't know. Unfortunately, it probably involves book learning, which is a weak point. Self defense helps Xander fight back physically to an extent, but a lot of his opponents are supernaturally strong, and sometimes there's nothing for him to physically fight.

[X]Study with Giles

I think I'll go with this one as Xander acknowledging that Gile's knowledge helped save the day. It would also save time in the future if Xander didn't have to fetch Giles to figure out what was going on.

[X]Learn about magic basics with Ms Calendar and Amy

I want to reassure Amy that we care.

Also would like to at least look into Xanders aptitude for Magic, something is better than nothing, even if he is limited to Fire Magic or the like.

Also would like to build ties with Jenny/Jana, see if we can defy her Canon Death.

[X]Learn about magic basics with Ms Calendar and Amy

I mean, if we could, I'd probably do a study with Giles and then, dunno, maybe a cinema thing with Amy? I don't want Xander to invite her to the Harris household, because our parents *suck*, but at the same time, I don't think magical studies is best for him.

[X]Study with Giles

There's no optimal option here! aghhh.
Anyway, I hope that we haven't been skipping on self defence too much :/
