You tried to practice a bit of the self defence moves that Giles managed to show you yesterday before the tryouts, but you weren't able to keep your mind focused on it. Your thoughts just kept drifting back to how one of the girls had burst into flames and how sexy Buffy had looked in her outfit. You really had to try harder if you wanted Giles to keep showing you stuff. Or you could give up. No, no you couldn't just give up. This wasn't like class. This meant something. You'd keep trying.

You slipped through the crowd to check the lists for the cheerleaders and were eager to share the good news to Buffy and Amy that they'd made it. Only, apparently they hadn't made it. They were spares in case someone got hurt, not on the main team. Man, you felt lousy for delivering that like good news now instead of being more supportive. Amy looked absolutely crushed. At least Buffy seemed fine with being on the sidelines. At least no one else burst into flames.

The day after however, Cordelia fell blind. No explanation of what caused it. You had thought it was a good thing at first, as Cordelia had seemed to just be ignoring you and Willow instead of mocking you both to reinforce her position as queen of the school. Cordelia almost getting hit by a truck cause she couldn't see ruined that. It did give Giles enough clues to conclude that it was witchcraft at least. You had a lead on what could be causing it, and a possible witch: Amy, who seemed obsessed with making it onto the team like her mom had. Giles even has a potion you can make to test if someone is a witch, so you don't need to crucify Amy if she's innocent. The only problem is, with Cordelia out of the way Buffy's next on the target list.

[ ]Try to convince Buffy to stay safe and let you and Willow run the search
[ ]Stick with Buffy so you can try and do something if she's targeted
[ ]Try and look up a way to undo the curses with Giles in case Buffy is hit before you find the witch

I just found this quest! I never actually watched the show, but I used to really like reading the fanfiction, and I liked it best when the Scooby gang all got along. Here's hoping we can dodge the friendship pitfalls!

[X]Stick with Buffy so you can try and do something if she's targeted

If someone comes up with a good write-in, I'm willing to switch, but this seems to be the best of the listed options. Buffy is the Slayer, and she's not going to let Willow and Xander go into danger for her. Xander isn't good at book learning. If he's with Buffy, then maybe his Observant trait can help.

Yeah, I guess Willow will have the magic angle covered with Giles.

They seem to resort to magic to eliminate rivals. Not sure what we can do about that if Buffy or us become targets.

If the magic relies on line-of-sight, Xander can try to stop the mage from completing the spell. If it doesn't require line-of-sight, then I don't know how Buffy can stay safe, and I think it's extremely unlikely that she'll agree to staying safe while Willow and Xander risk danger on her behalf.

Unfortunately the sympathetic/voodoo type magic Catherine Madison uses is targeted primarily using bits of people or items they own to reach them from any distance and I don't think it cares about obstacles. At the very least all those type of curses seemed to need a while to "develop" to full-strength as Cordelia wasn't blind right away and Buffy got worse over time.

She did use one or two close-range telekinetic spells and an ironically "line-of-sight" curse that required her to be looking directly at the victim to the point a mirror reflected it right back at her, so there might be something we can do. It's an excuse to hang around Buffy and talk at least.

Actually thinking about it, if we change even a small detail here, Amy's mother is a seriously powerful enemy the Scoobies don't have any way of dealing with for good (especially with their sensible reticence to kill their classmate's mom on school property) if she doesn't accidentally imprison herself like canon -and that was a long-shot fluke- then they're in real trouble.

I do at least hope in the aftermath of this we can keep in touch with Amy. She could actually be a really handy magic-friend if Xander renewed that childhood friendship he, Willow, and her had, particularly considering she kinda got ditched to deal with her trauma alone in canon even if she was happier with her Dad back in the picture. Hell, she might even be girlfriend material considering she's cute, nice, supernaturally in-the-know, lonely, and could use some fun in her life.

I'm fairly sure after ruining the cheerleading performance for the big game and causing a scene, she wasn't exactly beloved by the popular girls or had many friends. I'm also pretty confident her Mom wouldn't have cared about wasting time being nice to her friends, keeping her grades up, or doing anything not cheerleading, so even beyond the whole "ultimate violation" and helplessness/terror, poor Amy.

Witchy Conclusions
You do your best to stick close to Buffy. If she gets hit by a curse you'll hopefully be able to help her get to Giles or whatever's needed. You do prove that Amy has magic with the potion, but she seemed so upset when the girl in your chem class's mouth disappeared. Willow suggested she may not be controlling her magic. Unfortunately you don't know enough about magic to say whether that's possible or not. You know the Scarlet Witch in X-Men could lose control of her powers when she was exceptionally emotional, but does that apply here?

You make plans to go to Amy's house and talk to her mom to see if perhaps her mom has magic as well and Amy is still learning how to use it. Before then unfortunately, Buffy gets hit. It's a relief that Buffy trusts you and Willow to take care of her. She's completely out of it. You do feel a warm swell when she speaks of how much she trusts you, if just as much embarrassed when she refers to you as "one of the girls". You are a man, after all. Well, a guy at least. You'll be a man soon enough.

You take Buffy to the library, and Giles rapidly diagnoses the spell. It's a blood vengeance spell, and it's three hours before Buffy will die of it. Giles did find a way to undo the spells at least: either behead the witch, or burn the spellbook. Buffy of course is gungho to take this on herself, despite her increasing dizziness and difficulty focusing. She's taking this seriously as her responsibility, and you can see it weighing down on her. Just her as the Vampire Slayer. She doesn't seem to grasp that you and Willow are there to help her at all.

[ ]Go to Amy's house and seek out the spellbook to burn
[ ]Confront Amy and try to decapitate her

[ ]Let Buffy go with you to deal with things
[ ]Have Buffy take the easy job of guarding the chem lab
[ ]Write-in

Decapitating someone is a really big step. I definitely prefer seeking out the spellbook.

My main dilemma is what to do with Buffy. On one hand, she's most likely still stronger than Xander and Willow, and she should be allowed to take action to save her own life. On the other hand, maybe Xander and Willow would be able to fly under the witch's radar if Buffy, one of her targets, isn't there? If Buffy wasn't so out of it, I'd ask her to hang back outside the house in case things go badly. Anyone have any ideas for a write-in?

Can Giles get Amy's Mom to school? Maybe Xander can mention Amy looking unwell or pale. Giles can spin this into some kind of wellness check.

I like the idea, but is going to Amy's house dependent on there being someone who can let them in, or can they break in if necessary?

I'm setting up a write-in vote for us to modify as we work out details.

[]Write-in: Ask Giles to call Amy's mom to the school on the pretense that she doesn't look well.
-[] If this succeeds, then Giles should subtly try to get more information about Amy, her mother, and the spellbook if possible. Xander and Willow should go to Amy's house to burn the spellbook. Buffy should stay at the school because that's where the witch is.
-[] If this does not succeed, then Xander and Willow should go to Amy's house to burn the spellbook and bring Buffy with them.

No one seems to have any opinions on my suggested write-in so I'm going to go ahead and vote.

Witch Swap
You're not feeling great about this, but Buffy is the slayer. So you let Giles decide for Buffy to go to Amy's house to burn the spellbook, and you go with her to keep Buffy from completely collapsing.

Seeing Amy's mom is weird. She's really uncomfortable with the two of you in the house, acting like she's being caught doing something wrong. Buffy realizing that this was in fact Amy in her mother's body made the entire thing even more awkward. First there had been vampires out for your blood, now there were witches out for snatching your body. Great, just great. At least once the jig is up Amy's-Amy is willing to show you both the attic where her mom was casting the spells. Yeah, that's not going to stop messing with your head anytime soon.

You don't waste any time digging through the weird stuff in the attic. As soon as you have the spellbook you pull out your lighter and set it aflame. Amy shrieks and staggers before falling down freaking you out. Burning the spellbook hadn't killed her, right?

Buffy seems more coherent as she straightens up. You step over to check on Amy, only for her to lunge forward and try to strangle you. Not Amy anymore! You struggle to get her hand off from around your throat. Buffy luckily steps in and punches her hard enough to get her to let go. You take a breath and distance yourself as much as possible while Amy's mom tries to kill Buffy for getting in her way. Buffy manages to knock the woman out, leaving you both trying to figure out what to do.

It turns out Giles knows a way to bind a witch's magic. Useful guy, Giles. He even manages to do something that gets Amy's mom to emancipate her so she can live on her own. You're honestly jealous of that. You can't afford to live on your own, of course, but it'd be great to get away from your parents.

[ ]Talk to Amy about her living situation, see if you could maybe be roommates, as awkward as that might be
[ ]Leave Amy alone so she can recover from the trauma of what her mom did

[ ]Keep working on self defense with Giles
[ ]Push Giles to tell you what other threats could be out there
[ ]Take time to goof off and not think about what happened
